  • Derelict panel van conversion to recovery truck. Been parked up quite a few years now and rusting in peace. However engine is a very good one having been replaced at some point. It's started up occasionally to keep it well oiled and free. The Easter 2020 coronavirus lock down is a good opportunity for take a film of this and share for anyone interested in these classic Mercedes commercial survivors. They do now, deservedly, have a big worldwide following as many are repurposed as campers. Excellent parts support, even now. One of three I have here. Update Aug 2020. Now all sold to good homes. The engine and gearbox of this one went into a German fire engine 409 to replace the petrol 2.3L and has recently done a 2,500 mile tour in Europe. What super old engines there are! Even the other parts are salvaged by another owner for an estate lorry.

Great video, Chris. Do you still have the 608D?

No I sold all three that I made videos of. The best to watch is the silver MWB high roof 508D D601 DMS. Very good conversion. Had it ten years or so. Its current owner has been in recent touch and may be selling it. The LWB 608D is present being restored by Russ Beck who posts on the Facebook group. It too is a properly registered Motor Caravan. Both PHGV so need suitable licence. The recovery truck made from a cut down LWB 508D van was de-rated to PLG. A lot of its running gear went into an ex German fire engine which had been petrol powered.
