1972 Mercedes-Benz 220D start attempt

- Video taken March 21, 2010, the day after purchasing the car. I bought it from who I suspect was the fourth owner (owner #1 had the car from 1972 through to the mid-90s). The car had not been driven, and had not moved in years. I was able to drive it out of the seller's driveway and on to the trailer for the tow, and then again off the trailer into my driveway.
This is a video of me trying to start the car the next day. I suspect bad glow plugs and a low battery. Still have not fixed it a year later. The car's in my garage and I've been concentrating on bodywork in the meantime. Trying to get the car roadable for it's 40th birthday in 2012.

Wow! Memories for me trying to get my old 190D started especially in the winter: same sounds, same glow plug indicator just missed the smell of the glow plugs, diesel and all the smoke that would come out the exhaust.
Mercedes Benz best cars ever made, nothing to touch it. I and my friend drove from London to Sri Lanka in 1977 in Mercedes benz 220/8 in 8 days had problem with aulternator once in Turky and was fixed by MB dealers. .
this is the only brand with this singular diesel engine sound but after the w124 things gonna change. I like so much the diesel sound of a mercedes .....
On these old diesels you're supposed to leave the starter engaged until they start. IIRC, the owners manual even says if you don't do that, it may fail to start on subsequent starts. The starters are very strong and designed to handle it. I think if you would have left the starter engaged on the first try and kept the pedal floored it might have started.
Thanks for the tip. Actually, the problem was more mundane. I bought the car thinking the fuel gauge was broken, but that there was some fuel in the tank.
In actuality, the tank was almost empty and the engine was struggling to pick up fuel. Once I figured that out and added fresh diesel, I had consistent starts.
Flooring the pedal doesn't matter. The governor is calling for full fuel anyway - until it starts.
i owned a few when they were cheap to buy and the last was a 220D w115 ,the car when i bought it was stoped for almost 10 years , i had seen it stoped for some years till i asked the owner if he wanted to sell it to me ,he replied that he had given up trying to sell it because several people appear but none really wanted to pay more than 100€(today exchange),so i bought it for 450€, and paid almost a 1.000€ for the proper tyres, it was complete not even the front mercedes symbol was missing, wich was rare to see one, i started the engine at the second try ,never let the resistor glow that much ,just let it glow and then start, this with the relanty button on it´s highest position ,normally if you let it glow for a while it will steal the battery power and when you pull the starter it will rotate slower(that´s what i saw in the video)and only press the gas pedal when you hear the engine already wanting to start,if the engine is not starting just pull the starter into it´s first position 2 or 3 times without trying to make it run then you pull it once more when the resistor glows start it and if at least one engine glow plug is working it should start, i had a 69 , a 71, a 72 and this last was a 74 w115, this with diesel engine, when younger i used to work on agriculture projects inspection, and lot´s of litle villages where only older people lived, i used to find some 60´s and 70´s mercedes models from old land owners that kept their cars next to the main house, once after talking to a 80 years old man for alf an hour he told me that his grandsons didn´t care about old cars, and when i asked him if he wanted to sell to me the car, he just offered me the car ,a 69 280S wich had low milage and worked perfect either than the fuel consumption the car was perfect no rust, i did travel to marocco with this car ,the fuel was very cheap, and made at least 4.000km´s, never had a problem with it ,but sold it later and bought a c115 230E, but diesel is cheaper and i kept using the w114 and a w115 both 220D, this car if well taken care of they would last forever, the only problem is the rust ,there were cars that the body was almost impossible to restore but i bought them and kept the engine, sorry if my english is confusing is not my main language i´m portuguese, regards
Nice. Thanks for sharing your story.
Vorglühen bis die Motorhaube rot wird...🤩👍
I know this video is old but I wanted to jump in. I have one of those and valve adjustment makes a world of difference for starting
In my case, the fuel level was low in the tank and the engine was having troube picking up fuel.
I love the sound of the old engine 😁

Mon papa avais une 190d rouge mais aussi une cammionette 180d qui a passé 1 000 000 de km je m en souviens car nous l avions fêter, ses diesel était incassable mécanique magnifique !
Buddy, that thing sounds great for having set up so long. I bet it only needs minor attention, as you said....fuel filters, fresh fuel, new glow plugs, a valve adjustment (although it didn't sound bad at all). Great old cars and these things love long road trips!!
Indeed it does. I would say that it's a nominal amount at best. The knob just modulates idle, and won't crank to full throttle.
@Seattlecarnut Thanks. Actually, it sounded and started even better once I did a valve adjustment before I sold it.
On Mercedes if glow plug light is ON when car is started but it is off while you warming it up, then it means that one of glows are BAD!
I don't know if someone comment this before me but I can't read all comments.
Maybe on a later system. But I believe the system on this old '72 was much simpler.
Not sure what you're asking. It's unmodified. I may have turned up the idle speed in order to ease starting.
Gotcha. The knob tightens/loosens a cable which moves the throttle linkage (more throttle/less throttle).. Just raises idle for cold starts. Much less necessary with a properly-tuned engine or in warm weather.
Between that "salt shaker" and the ignition key, you have an idle adjustment for adjusting for cold or hot engine.
Thanks, but well aware. This video was taken nine years ago, and even then, I'd been driving Mercedes diesels since 1996. In the end, the reason I wasn't able to start this car easily was that the fuel tank was almost empty, and it was having trouble picking up diesel.
@@MercedesDieselGuy Ah I see. These old models have a manual de-airing system for when it runs out of diesel. Not like fancy stuff from the newer generations. I love these old Mercedes cars, they run forever with a little maintanace.
Love this Sound 😍
The best real mb ever made, not the trash from today.
Sure do. Not sure how to link to them from a comment, but there's plenty on here. Be forewarned, I did sell the car before completing the project. I'm currently working on 1983 240D.
Circumstances forced me to sell the car as an incomplete project back in December. But, I was able to pick up a 1983 240D project in April, which I will be working on soon.
@compu85 The car's been undriven for years. I'm sure it is in desperate need of a valve adjustment, a diesel purge, a tank cleaning and line flush, and work on the glow system.
My big problem when I made this video was a weak battery. I actually managed to get a full charge into the ancient battery since the video and have been maintaining the charge, although I haven't even attempted to start the Mercedes in over a year now. (Doing bodywork in the garage)
I hadn't considered that possibility, but normally I would unplug it. In this case, I was looking for every advantage I could get to start the car. In the end it turned out that the problem was low fuel.
sounds like the cold start setting on the pump needs adjusted make sure the cable is pulling the shut down lever on the pump all the way back when cranking the mounts used to wear out and and you did not get full fuel on the rack when cold cranking
I think the indicator glow is put on the right-hand-side meter, which I think is the speedometer in the later diesel Mercs. Additionally, the "gorilla knob", is one of my favourite parts. Though I cannot think why diesels are not that good, I tend to prefer petrol models. Imagine someone robbing a bank with this kind of car. They have to wait for the glow plugs are ready, and then you can start... But by that time you'll be arrested.
I know it's been 11 years, but I wanted to opine that if you are robbing a bank the car is probably warm from having driven there so the glow plugs are going to warm up quickly.
My cousin put one of these motors in an international scout II and when I first went to drive it to the drilling rig, I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't start. U had to hold a toggle switch for the glow plugs and turn the ignition key about 15 seconds later. It had stacks on it and we ran a propane line for cng system to intake. Ran great and pulled even better. Ohhh I almost forgot to mention it had over a million miles on it. We just figured we would run it till the wheels fell off. That d
I know this ceremony, that was my first car... a1970 200D/8 , a tractor but 500000 KM or more were possible
+Robert Lindner For the record... it wasn't starting because the fuel tank was almost empty. When I bought the car, I thought the fuel gauge was broken. Nope - it turned out that the tank was pretty much empty. Just enough to start the car a few times. Eventually, I added about five gallons of fresh diesel to the tank, primed the system, and it started up easily and consistently.
@Keeferlgb Thanks - check my recent videos. The car sat for two years after this. I did a valve adjustment (among other things). Starts quick and runs nicely now.
Nice looking car.
You should always unplug a block heater before starting the engine, because the sudden cold rush of coolant over the hot element will burn it out.
@POLfahrer Well aware, thanks. I actually haven't started the car in well over a year now Before I do start it again, I'm going to adjust the valves and fix the oil cooler. Before I put the car on the road, I'm going to drain the ancient diesel and clean out the fuel system.
You can try to start for 45 seconds, starter can handle that. It is NOT better for glowplugs or batterie to start six times. Compressed air will warm up cylinders. I owned 200D: /8 W123 and still driving in 2018 E220D W210
I sold the car years ago. It turns out the problem was the fuel tank was almost empty and the engine just wasn't picking up fuel.
This was right after I bought the car, which had been sitting for years. After this, it sat in my garage for another two years before I got around to giving it a bit of a tune-up (cleaned carbon out of glow plug holes, new fuel filters, valve adjustment, new fuel primer pump, cleaned oil bath air filter, etc). After all that, and pumping the fuel lines out again, it started up nice and fast.
Check all the four glow plugs separately. Looks like all the glow plugs are not in tact
I uploaded this video almost eight years ago. The car is long gone. For what it's worth, it was really low on fuel and the lines were sucking air from the tank.
Too tired to re-watch video right now, but 10-to-1, it was the idle control knob. These cars have fully-mechanical fuel injection, and a manual adjustment knob for idle speed. Higher idle assists with cold starts.
No. Clutch-starter interlock was a later idea. Even my 1991 Vanagon didn't have clutch-starter interlock.
Mercedes from the MGA-like starting methods to the actual button starts...
i just bought one like yours , and i have problems to start the engine , i find the glow plugs are broken... and i have some electric wires out from their place ..uff in the last 4 years they didnt start the car ... can you tell me where to look diesel for issues thank
If the glow plugs are sorted out, and the car had fuel, try priming the lines with the manual primer
im new to old diesels, whats that knob you turn on the right towards the end
It’s a hand throttle to raise the engine speed to a fast idle while it warms up. This car would be undriveable until up to temperature.
I am asking what is affected when you turn the idle speed knob.
It is a cable that pulls the throttle linkages and keeps the throttle open slightly. Simple, but I can't find these cables online to replace it. The end will snap off is not kept lubricated, and that's why I need a new one
I dont see enough glow in the salt shaker.
i have run a jumper from the battery to a plug to get it really hot and keep it hot until the engine runs. i have also run a W115 with truly ancient fuel in it. Diesel,no matter how old will run an engine.
Well, the addition of the "gorilla knob" (starter knob) made these older ones even weirder to start. Starting with the later W115s and the W123s, it was standard preglow and turn the key to start.
Well done on getting her running! I've just got myself a 1969 220D which I have yet to hear run after replacing the glow plugs and injectors, so am thinking its the injector pump. Going to give it one last long bleed this week and see if she fires! Another question I have is: Do you have or were you able to find a workshop manual for this car? I've been searching high and low!
Little did I know, I bought the car with an almost empty fuel tank. I got it to start this time, and then put it into storage on empty. Trying to start it a year later was problematic, too. The gauge read empty, but because the car was so old, I simply assumed the fuel gauge didn't work. Imagine my surprise when I put fuel in the tank and the gauge worked perfectly...
@swpennypacker Correct. That's the idle speed adjuster.
@MercedesDieselGuy I figured so. From what I hear in the UK you don't have to do that at all
Nice sound😃
Did you need to press the clutch in to start this particular car?
A dump question....is there fuel in the tank?
Actually, that's a great question. The tank was almost empty. There was JUST ENOUGH to start the car when I bought it, but it was nearly dry, which is why I had trouble starting it in this video.
The gauge read empty, but for no reason, I made the wrong assumption that there was fuel in the tank and that the gauge was faulty. I was surprised when I added diesel to the tank and the gauge started registering fuel.
@@MercedesDieselGuy ok that explains it👌
I get it now. And that proves that it takes more than a normal person to start an old diesel Merc. I have to tell you one thing, my 2011 328i sounds like a slightly quieter version of the old diesel Mercs. And it is petrol, in-line 6. Bimmer should be embarassed at how terrible their new 3 series has become.
You should be able to get the manual on CD ROM from Mercedes. Anything printed would be vintage. Best of luck.
Oh... So does it use more fuel when you have more throttle?
The car is long since sold. It turns out that my biggest problem is that the tank was almost dry.
Hey yavrum hey, çalışacakta gideceğimiz yere gidicez.
You have the basic idea. It doesn't so much help to START it though, as it helps maintain idle so the car doesn't stall out when warming up.
@MercedesDieselGuy Great stuff man!
Reminds me of my youth when I was used to own a 200/8.
Wish I could turn back time.......
Oh, so when you haven't started the Merc for a long time or it's in extreme cold temperatures, you turn the idle speed knob to have more throttle to start it, and in normal temperatures you can have less throttle and start it with ease. But, I'm confused why it is there as more throttle would always work...??? Anyways, I'm guessing that more throttle obviously uses more diesel.
What do you do with the idle speed knob???
how about incresing the relanti of the engine
In my case, the car sat for a long time with an almost empty tank. I thought I had a broken fuel gauge. It was just genuinely reading empty. I added some fuel to the tank and the starting problem was solved.
The engine seems to run rather rough, even for a diesel. Do you still have the car, or did you sell it?
This was before I did anything to it. Eventually, I gave the car a diesel purge and valve adjustment, and it ran pretty well. Unfortunately, I sold it as an incomplete project over two years ago as I needed the space, time, and money to put a new engine into my Volkswagen Vanagon. My current project is an '83 240D.
MercedesDieselGuy Ah! Ok. Do you have any video of the start attempt after the diesel purge?
Jason Carpp Yes, I have a full playlist of this car. This is a video after the car sat for a year and a half, but right after a valve adjustment:

and here's one shortly thereafter, right after a diesel purge:

Thank you. I'll check them out.
Battery was IOK. Car was low on fuel.
No. This car is from the good old days when people didn't need to be protected from every little thing in life.
I see the oil pressure is at 30 even though engine is off?
Britcheflee The gauge was broken. Never got around to replacing it. Sold the car years ago.
when they sounded like London black taxis
in germany we say......runs like bell^^^ good olt times..and the baggage room was soooooo huge..^^
I was really looking forward to driving this car. Unfortunately, I had to sell it as an unfinished project.
Funny english. He means „runs like a clockwork“.
Yes she's the queen of the road
Sounds like bad glow plugs or air in diesel lines
It was an almost empty fuel tank.
Patricio If the glow plug light doen't show then one of the glow plug is faulty, but this one have fuel problem. and not glow plug.
In the USA, the diesel it's expensive?
All things considered, not really.
If your fuel has sat for that long and is even close to black you should replace it before you run your car. Don't want to run sludge through the engine.
Ok. I'll have to check them out.
OM615 in a Sc out? I would have loved to have seen that.
are you driving it yet?
Do you have any more videos of the car?
That engine were dead when u got it . no old merc diesel should startup like that. when u finally get it started it sounded like the starter worked the engine up in speed bit by bit. My guess is that the piston rings were shot :-)
As I have replied many times to other comments, this car's fuel tank was almost completely empty, and for the most part, it was sucking air into the lines.
Not long after this video, I added a few gallons of diesel to the tank and did not have trouble starting it up after that.
When I bought the car, the fuel gauge read as empty, but since the previous owner was able to start the car in front of me, I wrongly assumed that there was more fuel in the tank and that the gauge was faulty. After I added diesel, the level rose on the gauge.
I own at one time 220D and that globe plug will get HOT..
I remember feeling heat come off it. Unfortunately, I sold the car as an unfinished project years ago.
it is glow plug not globe! as it is glow red hot!
I like🙏 3 mercedes
@Klystron33 Thanks :)
glow, pedal on floor and start, max 40sec.
This is a very old video. The fuel in the tank was too low, and the engine was having a hard time picking up fuel. Problem resolved when I added more to the tank.
Соляра походу

👍😎
This is what Google Translate says: "you are a gringo you file for a diesel demarai". I have no idea what your intended comment is.
Would have been nicer if we could also see the outside of the car too.
+40RTY 7EVEN I'm pretty sure I have other videos out here showing the car's exterior. Unfortunately, I needed to sell this car as an uncompleted project years ago.
This is OM615 👍👍👍
Thanks for that pointer!
😊😃😊
Thats a normal Mercedes cold start. It´s a SHIT in winter temperatures!
Actually, I eventually discovered that the car was WAY low on fuel and it needed a valve adjustment. The fuel gauge wasn't reading correctly. Once I added a few more gallons to the tank and adjusted the valves, it started much more easily.
Mon papa avait une 200D ou 190D de 1965,je pense de ce modèle... J'adore !!!!! Si je trouve une..
Бог сжалился над людьми, и подарил им Mercedes !
Mercedes !
Ok.
👍
I never had a car which was functioning without Diesel or Gas. Watch the diesel gauge in the dashboard . The car has no fuel. Start attempt for dummies not mercedes quality!!
When I bought the car, it had been sitting for years. As the seller got the car started without difficulty, I assumed the car had a faulty fuel gauge sending unit, which is fairly common for these cars. When I got it started, I assumed that I simply had valves (WAY) out of adjustment and gunked-up fuel filters and injectors.
You are correct... and I should have checked that first. But, I had solid enough (albeit wrong) reasons to think that the fuel gauge simply wasn't working.
MercedesDieselGuy Yeah mostly are disadjusted valves the reason for this at these cars
How come you sold the car?
Mostly, the engine in my VW Vanagon needed to be replaced and I really couldn't manage having two projects at the same time. I had a long history with the VW (still have it) , so it was the one that got to stay.
If it first you don't succeed, try, try again, eh?
batterie low
good engine..
Do not give accelerator while start
Actually full throttle is the key to starting unwilling Mercedes diesels. It even says so in the manual
Ein Glühstift ist kaputt
Low Batterie
Not enough fuel in tank.
Still better emissions than VW😂👍🏻
You're probably right.
cool proect car
