for a home job, this is really well done. One suggestion I gotta throw in is when masking the wheel openings, I've had success with back-taping the inner lip of the entire wheel opening, then sticking the paper/plastic to the tape. There's no overspray in the wheel opening and tire area & it just makes the job look more professional.
Added humidity can mess with the paint. I've run into issues a few times on that. I hose down the floor and scrub with a dish soap solution and a broom, then pressure wash my floor. Let it dry for a day and then shoot paint.
you did a good job. Too many pricks on here saying you did this wrong, you did that wrong, and probably have never tried to paint a car themselves. For a back yard job this is as good as it gets really. Great work man. You've given me the confidence to spray my project car. And probably many others..
Since it appears that you have never painted a car, how did you determine the OP is right, and the critics are wrong?? Perhaps they want to ensure you don't make mistakes they see here. I was looking for full color-change techniques promise in the title only to find half the important details are not even discussed! Why bother? And as someone who has painted vehicles--in and out of work --for 40 years, I GUARANTEE YOU there are far better videos out there for beginners.
@@FisherCatProductions Professional car painter for Audi / Volkswagen for 10+ years here, and i second this. I’ll always keep this video I’m my liked videos… if it wasn’t for this video I wouldn’t have gotten through my practical exam for Automotive Body Repair in college without a hitch back in 2016… forever thankful!
He was learning .. if you watch his other videos he is basically showing people as he learns.. he has come a long way since the start. At least he has taken the time to share. I think that’s a good effort for a beginner. Also this is Australia, you guys in US are used to much cheaper prices ... so 1000 respray is cheap for us for a good job compared to 3000
absolutely love the color, im thinking about doing some touch-ups on my car and maybe even a full repaint or recolor and you seem to really know what you're doing, so i think you've just earned another subscriber :D
Thanks for the video.had to change both pass doors due to a lil accident.i got both at junkyard for cheap but diff colors.i followed your steps & got them to match the color of my car silver.didnt have to pay an arm & leg but mostly was fun painting.next project are my rims & then my daughters car when she gets back from college. 👍👍
Yes a swirl remover is a better option after using the cutting compound. It is a finer grade of compound that will remove scratches left from the first cutting compound. Then the polish should go on.
For someone that enjoys working on their car and takes pride in a job they have done themselves, the price is worth it. Dont forget you will get to keep the compressor, the spray gun and the Buffing machine for future jobs. These items alone account for half the price mentioned.
Great,VID,I aint every heard the process explained with such clear explinations, rather than "THE TEXT BOOK"explanations. My mind actually fully grasped it.
I've got a spare red s-pack EA Falcon sitting in the drive just begging for a birthday. I reckon this vid explains enough for me to give it it a go. Thanks Dave. Great job!
@bigboy5998 use a 2pack matte finish. Either the sem hot rod black or the alsa soft feel clear. Using an acrylic matte finish will scuff really easily and can crack and fade over time. hope it goes well for ya.
It is a custom colour. I mixed black and coarse metallic about 50 50. I have looked at a colour chart and it is very close to code:468 Lava Sand Metallic from a Volvo Hope this helps mate.
I needed this because I just bought an s14 and since it was a fully built drift missile, it didn't have some panels. So I had to mix and match and my car looked like a rainbow. Helped heaps mate.
Yes thats right it is a finer cut. Yeah a hand polish should last about 6 to 8 months then will need to be reapplied. A spray painter would use a 2K clear that dries glossy. So there is no need to cut and buff. But Most of the time to get a really glossy finish they will cut and buff.
Yes humidity could be a reason for that, it will eventually go away. You can sand with 800g wet and re apply the clear. If you can heat the cans in warm water before using the paint.
When I painted my motorcycle years ago, I thouroughly swept and washed the entire driveway (including the retaining wall). When I was ready to paint, I sprayed down the surrounding surfaces and bushes. I ran the risk of increasing moisture in the air, but it really helped trap dust and pollen. There's nothing worse than getting something stuck in your first layer of clear, only to spot it after your third or fourth layer! Of course, a light sanding between layers helps, too.
@thabliz77 it could have come out rough for a number of reasons maybe gun setup. Mixing ratios. Type of thinners. Also of its really hot the paint can almost dry as it hits the surface. Try wind in all the nozzles on your spray gun then wind the fluid out about 3 turns. The fan about 15cm wide and the air about 45psi use 60 parts thinners to 40 parts clear and do about 4 coats.Try sand back the car with 800g and give it another coat of color and clear. Dont dust it on try and be slow and smooth
As long as you get coverage with your paint and enough clearcoat on. You can always sand and buff it to look glossy and smooth. I have seen clearcoat that is really bad and you would think it needs to be redone. But a good sand and buff brought it up maaad.
@remrusty This car is used in the Free Lessons that VG Auto Paints put on once a month. The rest of the car will slowly be buffed and purposely dented scratched and repaired and buffed over and over. I will be our Gemini and a full final product result will be shown in detail.
Mario recommends compressor 2.7 hp fad 205 lpm with workquip gun that has a air consumption listed as 420lpm. Dos'nt match up yet there was'nt any problems with the job. Not doubting Mario's recommendation or work what am I missing or not understanding. From a diy beginner
Hey i recently sprayed my car and had the same question. what i did was use plastic primer on the plastic and then go over that and the whole car with regular primer before painting and it worked well :)
I have a mate with a white bonnet on a silver car which I might be spraying to match soon and will be using what i've learnt through your video's to do it. Gonna buy a cheapo panel from a scrap yard first though to practice on. Keep it up.
Love your videos, one question. If I want to remove clear coat from car with orbital sander, do I use wet or dry sanding discs and what grit? Second part of of question: what if I want to remove paint all the way to bare metal, do I use wet or dry sanding disc and what grit. Lastly where do i buy the wet sanding discs
That can be caused by smashing on the clearcoat too heavy and not waiting 10 to 15min between coats. What is happening is the solvent is trying to escape and causing tiny pinholes as it does. By waiting longer between coats and applying a medium coat of clear should eliminate this problem. Hope this helps
I painted a fender in my backyard. Primed it and knocked the primer down with sandpaper. Shot color and then clear. Orange peel everywhere. Then, I sanded it and sanded it and sanded it... didn't turn out too bad for having AutoZone lacquer and a Harbor Freight gun...done outside. Unless you're Chip Foose, you're gonna have orange peel. I should give you a break, though. You probably missed the sanding at 16:34. And you probably missed the previous comment about it.
if its not a single stage paint, the clear coat will give it the depth and shine that you see on most cars. it will make your job look alot better with it. but its all up to you!!
Fantastic and informative video boys if I was spraying Glacier White Acrylic would you recommend to put Clearcoat over this solid colour, Mario you are a too nicer guy to not wear a mask. Thanks in advance
I agree I had a quote with my old Acura Integra and It was 3000 for the origional color. That was including to get all dents out and and everything too
yea thats true. but after each coat you can wet sand, going from 1200 grit up to 2000 after the last coat of color. then the same with the clear. 24 hours after the paint has been laid, you can then buff it out and polish to get a very clean and perfect shine with depth!
First time I ever heard that clear coat is for metallic colors only. Is this true??? I've always used it no matter what, figuring it would protect the base coat.
Great video dude. This whole channel is an awesome resource-- especially when you're broke and can't afford to pay professionals to do body and paint work for you. Can I just say a guide coat actually allows you to see high and low spots on the panel/substrate where it's dark is a low spot and where there is none it's high it helps when fully flatting of the panel
This is an awesome video. I've been looking for something like this all weekend. They should just make your video the only one on the topic. Thanks man
cos you don't sand until the metal, how long will the new paint adhere ? in another word, how long will this repainting last if it is done exactly the same way you did in the video? also if you spayed acrylic primer, what is the mix you would do? Cheers, Thanks for the absolute brilliant video :)
Hey, first of all thank you for the awesome videos, and second I'm thinking about repainting my car. This will be the first time for me to attempt something like this. could you please tell what type of compressor should I get. thnx
Hey Dave. Great work on all your videos! They've helped me a lot when researching for spraying my car. Im spraying my 98 civic hatch matt black. I've purchased 2K MS Filler Primer to prime my car. Today I sprayed my rear spoiler and noticed a good bit of overspray throughout the paint job, does this matter seeing as ill be wet sanding this with 800g sandpaper?
Great job. But one question; are the last steps with the clearcoat and wet sanding neccersary if you got for a matt color or non-metalic color? What exactly does the clearcoat?
@PureDeer95 this car is used for VG Auto Paints free lessons the students have a go buffing it and repairing and blending so its never really finished.
Hey dude, great video. I'm up to spraying clear on my car. I did a small part just to make sure it turned out alright and i'm glad it did because i wound up with grey hazy patches all over it. Is that because i'm spraying it on too thin?
If I want to respray my car the same color, I assume i dont have to worry about the interior, taking doors off, etc... Just the outside. Do I have to sand it down to bare metal? or can I just go right over the original paint with the new paint and follow there? I do have a little rust on one side which will need to be sanded and repaired, i will have to do further research on how to fix that problem. Thanks.
By cutting back so often and several times it generally ensures any light dust or debris that settles is removed... this is great... can't wait to get another cheap project car to have a crack at...
I'm getting ready to paint on my Acura.... I was thinking about maaco for the painting. But I've not seen so many good things come from them. Ill just get a new Snap-on spray gun and get a few ingersol Rand separators and a regulator and spray it myself... I want my car white... but DAMN I don't feel like doing all that work....
after seeing this video I HAD to subscribe! your vids are so detailed and show the final outcome....I have a black car with a lot of rock chips and scratches to the front end...I was hoping to repaint the front end (hood, bumper and fenders) do you have any tips on blending the new paint to the existing OEM paint???? Im mainly worried about from the new paint on the fenders to the OEM paint on the doors.
Hi mate nice vid, I had a go at painting a door. I believe I'm doing some thing wrong because I used around 600ml of mixed acrylic at 55psi to do the just the front of the door. About the same for primer and clear too. Is that alot of paint for a door, Any suggestions?
I really like these videos, tanks for sharing and I'm just wondering about spraying without a ventilated / filtering spray booth, is it unsafe? because I hear there's fumes coming from certain paints or thinners, it's why you need a respirator(or sometimes even a full body suit) can you tell me about that please.
Great video, thanks! Did you clear the jams as well before reinstalling the doors? Then just sand the over spray off the body before laying the final base? I'm not doing a color change, but the jams are in rough shape...
You don't wet rub metallic paint only the clear on top then buff, with solid you wet rub the color base as there are no metallic flakes to damage with the sand paper and generally people don't put clear on solid color.
Daniel G thanks daniel for answering my question. I will be spraying solid colour . Its my sons car and he wants to change the colour. So does this mean that I just have to sand the car down , spray with primer 3 coats , sand again. spray 3 solid top coats no sanding . would that be right . just need to make sure as i have not sprayed acrylic before only cellulose
hi asuming your body work is done and the car is straight with no rust, chips etc. i would rub the car down with 400 to 600 grit wet and dry clean the car do your priming (make sure u are painting acrylic on acrylic only) do your 3 coats then coat your base . rub back the paint with no rougher than 1200 (i go higher generally), then cut and buff. tips are wait at least a week after spraying before sanding and buffing. before u spray the car try fixing and spraying an old car door for practice first.
You will get to keep the compressor, buff machine and the spray gun. Thats about $600 worth of equipment. If you can find a place that can do it for that cheap then go for it.
@outdriving08 Hello, Fill the dents before you apply the primer. Yes if its a solid colour you dont need a clear coat. Although its recommended to put one on.
Great vids..One question when you are spraying undercoats you are using the workquip spray gun, then you switch to a walcom for the base & clear. Isn't the workquip with a 1.8 tip good enough?? I was thinking about buying the workquip but now I'm unsure because you seem to use the more expensive walcom unit in all the other vids. Cheers Shane
Hi Dave i thought your videos were great. I tried to do what you did however mine went very wrong. First of all the paint went okay but the clear dried really dry and rough. I sanded it back with 1500 grade sandpaper, and it took off the clear and roughed up the paint. Is it because i used general thinners rather than acrylic thinners,? Does that make a difference? I used a 2hp 20lt compressor which prop wasn't enough. the car looks bad now should i try again
if you make a mistake and the paint runs in somewhere on the car, don't freak out, you can sand it before spraying the clear coat, and if the clear coat runs at somewhere you can also sand it but all you need is very very high number of grit
Just wondering what compressor you run, The little direct drive model advertised in the movie might be a good little unit for jobs here and there. But for a more serious hobbyist i think i will need a little more.

I was told to wet the floor before you spray that will keep the dust from getting on the car...

i personally just got the paint(black) and thinner and painted directly after washing the fenders looks great. 3 coats . no sanding no nothing
That can be caused by smashing on the clearcoat too heavy and not waiting 10 to 15min between coats. What is happening is the solvent is trying to escape and causing tiny pinholes as it does. Hello, yes wet sanded the car with 600g, using a suitable primer after that is the best option but paint will stick to the 600g sanded area.

Would you be able to give me the list of all the stuff I need to paint a car and tools please
If I wanted to paint my vehicle flat black how does that change the step by step?
if its not a single stage paint, the clear coat will give it the depth and shine that you see on most cars. it will make your job look alot better with it. but its all up to you!!
Looks great. Whats the exact name of the color?
Fantastic and informative video boys if I was spraying Glacier White Acrylic would you recommend to put Clearcoat over this solid colour, Mario you are a too nicer guy to not wear a mask. Thanks in advance

Hey I use a sundstrom mask. VG Auto Paints have them they are in Sydney.
@puntylicious @puntylicious the compressor was about $370 and it comes with an air hose a cheap spray gun a tyre inflator and a degreaser gun.
Can I just say a guide coat actually allows you to see high and low spots on the panel/substrate where it's dark is a low spot and where there is none it's high it helps when fully flatting of the panel
This is an awesome video. I've been looking for something like this all weekend. They should just make your video the only one on the topic. Thanks man
Great video! Artists at work and this is why I'll pay guys like you to spray my car instead of doing it myself...!

Hey Dave. Great work on all your videos! They've helped me a lot when researching for spraying my car.

Great job.

best spray painting tutorial online by far! quick question, how much was the compressor?
fairplay to you mate dnt wrry bout haters .you keep bring these ideas to the nation.love this type of???? show lol
The matte color at the end of the video, how do you get than as shiny as the rest of the car?
Great video!

V.g great videos giving us hope in spraying in our own pase and backyard love ur vids once again great vids
He said fuck wearing a mask my lungs are invincible
Mike Woods His lungs are now clear coated. Unfortunately, his brain cell count just was cut in half.
Mike Woods Lets just Huff Paint on youtube LOLZ
I'm gonna stick to using crayons.
dave. if i buff the car after couple of days isnt there going to be a shrinkage problem in the clear coat? love your vids ....
Great Video thanks, How many coats of clear ? and how long between coats ?
Good work with the respray looks great! Out of curiosity was that acrylic respray over 2 pack paint?
Hey. If you want full gloss you do need to cut and buff the acrylic. Even a solid colour
Should you sand the paint before applying the clear coat ?
no you never sand your color unless you plan to repaint it
Hey dude, great video. I'm up to spraying clear on my car. I did a small part just to make sure it turned out alright and i'm glad it did because i wound up with grey hazy patches all over it. Is that because i'm spraying it on too thin?
Good video, and the acting was flawless, amazing editing too, so tasty
That looks awesome. Was that cost just for materials or tools as well?

Oh i did not know that thank you.
Thought don't painters usually paint solid 2k colours without clear? Or is it mixed in?
Great video! I'm planning on buying a miata soon and will do this. How much was it just for the paint and sand paper?
Great video, thanks! Did you clear the jams as well before reinstalling the doors? Then just sand the over spray off the body before laying the final base? I'm not doing a color change, but the jams are in rough shape...
do you have to sand after the three coats of base coat? there was no mention just sprayed clear coat on top of the base. please advise
Daniel G thanks for making that clear for me much appreciated
hello sir I like your video but you never said anything about the dents how to fix?
You will get to keep the compressor, buff machine and the spray gun. Thats about $600 worth of equipment. If you can find a place that can do it for that cheap then go for it.
when prep do i need to sand down the clear coat before the base coat
You should join mighty car mods cause what a grate paint job they did on the Type R lol
What's the paint code for the metallic grey, looks mint
australia is bad ass, they got serious talent there
A car enthusiast who drives a camry.. respect
I've seen you use a little 8 gallon compressor, spraying, when it kicks on, do u lose a ton of air pressure or are u able to still spray consistently?
@outdriving08 Hello,
Fill the dents before you apply the primer. Yes if its a solid colour you dont need a clear coat. Although its recommended to put one on.
Bro your vids are top quality! These are so helpful, keep up the awesome work
Great vids..One question when you are spraying undercoats you are using the workquip spray gun, then you switch to a walcom for the base & clear.
Its ok once its touch dry sand it with 800g wet and give it another coat of colour and clear until your happy with it.
Just wondering what compressor you run, The little direct drive model advertised in the movie might be a good little unit for jobs here and there. But for a more serious hobbyist i think i will need a little more.
Great video, but could we see more of the finished car? Please?
