    Freaking great point on the strategy!! As long as you plan a solid strategy, and stick to it, your chance of success increases immeasurably. Being flexible enough to recognize when you need to adjust (i.e. less miles, need for a zero, ready for more miles) can keep you on the trail longer. You guys did great at this! This is where my military mindset both helped and hurt me. Thanks guys!

      Thanks ER, and yes - being flexible was probably the hardest thing for me (as one who always likes to be organized and have everything planned out!), but it was good for me too - to HAVE to change stuff up when necessary. About time we finally got to your question, huh? -- Chica

    I was missing you as there wasn't a new video for some time. I followed your journey for a long time and feel like you are my friends now. I have done West Highland Way in Scotland 95 miles but very scenic, you may check it out. Look forward to reading your future book about AT!!!

    Hope you are planning to do another Q&A few questions
    1. Start date...so to avoid the start of the race what approximate date would you suggest...meaning the big push of through hikers til the pack thins out
    2 how many retirees did you meet and how successful were they...if you know
    3. Although we are pretty acclimated for hiking given we hike in the whites we are no where near the full day stamina...given our age (by the time we do hike) I fear it will take longer since we have worn bodies..lol..Do you think spring in south or fall in the north is more difficult if it ends up taking longer
    4. I am germ a phobic and it seems everyone i saw got sick...ugh...staying away from people is the best thing...is that even possible given the number of hikers. This question kind of coincides with the start date and do you think water filters ever fail?

    Great video and solid advice. I’m still laughing over “shit hill” in the Smokys. I found it odd as well.

    Thank you for your PerfectVideo software recommendation. In addition to hiking The AT, my wife and I own a honeybee farm. I wanted a way to tell our story but a series of videos during the day wasn't doing the job. Because of your recommendation, we are using PerfectVideo and can combine videos, photos and title pages together. Still learning but it hasdramatically improved our ability to tell the story even if just for family and friends.

    Howdy. Thanks for yet another awesome and super helpful video. Chica- Question about your quilt? I know you carried the Enlightened Equipment Revelation 10 degree quilt. Did you carry this for the entire trail? Did that work well for you?
    Thanks and can't wait to see what the future holds for you guys. Peace!

    Can't believe there aren't more people using cycling arm sleeves. I've been using them and also the cycling legs for hiking for years now. Why use long sleeve shirts when these are so easy to use. By the why they do have some that are lighter weight and offer sun protection.

    Another great video! As someone who has not yet hiked the AT I appreciate all the information. My question is how did you deal with a wet tent in the morning. That is my biggest concern as of now. Thanks

    How did your EE quilts do? I believe Sunsets had the 20• and Chica had the 10•. Did you stay warm? Would you purchase the same or differently, i.e. different degree or different size?

    A quick question for your next Q&A. Did anyone on the trail need or take advantage of massage therapists or Chiropractors in the trail towns to get the kinks out from carrying the backpack or sore legs?

    Hi Jen, Greg. Another outstanding video. I laughed out loud at the "pigtail" comments....and asked my wife to put hers in them! (Sorry. Was that TMI?!?) And Shit Hill? That's insane. Q1: Greg...this is for you. You mentioned "bourbon" in referring to "care packages".....so I assume you--like me--enjoy "a wee taste now and then". I am a 62 year old male in good shape....planning a 2018 thru hike after a 4 decade military/law enforcement career entering my Fourth Childhood phase. I am thinking of carrying a lightweight flask of quality bourbon...as a way to treat myself after a long, hard hiking day. Did you ever carry a pint....and if so....in the original container or a flask? Also, given what you both know.....would you consider a SOBO versus NOBO? Thanks again....both of you. You are a fun couple!

    (1)My question is how or what is the process you use to get your book published so you can put them on Amazon? (2) I know Sunsets backpack caused his shoulder to hurt. He mentioned in 1 video of moving the tent out of the side sleeve and putting it on the bottom of the backpack or on top. DId you try this? Was there any relief? Yes, I can see where a better stay (frame) might help transfer weight to the belt better. Enjoyed you hike and Q&A

    Amazing job by both of you sharing your journey! You both are so down to earth and give me hope that I might one day be able to pursue my dream of hiking the AT! (waiting for retirement). I don't believe you have talked much about this, but did you see a lot of snakes? I know you saw some rattle snakes. Was it common to see snakes? Did you have to be very mindful or were most seen in passing from a distance?

    • @ChicaandSunsets
      @ChicaandSunsets  6 років тому

      We saw 37 snakes. About 10 of which were rattlers. Never saw a copperhead or water moccasin- the other 2 venomous snakes along the trail. I like snakes so really watched out for them. Most of our hiking buddies were surprised at how many we saw. Most of them Chica walked right by before I pointed them out to her. They really are benign unless you step one.
      Look at the videos on our channel there is one of photos of a lot of the snakes we saw.

    I know you mentioned you were satisfied with your start date, but I was wondering what your thoughts were about starting earlier? To avoid the real heat. I read somewhere that there were a few people hiking SOBO starting in October, which means essentially a winter hike? Any thoughts on that? As a teen I used to backpack in winter and loved it - definitely more challenging. But I am wondering if it might be better so that you can avoid the crowds, the bugs, the sweat, the snakes, the thunderstorms, etc. :)

    • @ChicaandSunsets
      @ChicaandSunsets  6 років тому

      Winter hiking is certainly not for us. We chose our start date so that we could minimize snow and freezing conditions. That pretty much worked as we only had to get off trail twice due to cold.
      It’s all a crapshoot really. Start earlier, it might work out great. Or it might be horrible. The weather through the AT is wacky. As far as the heat goes you can always flip to Katahdin once it gets too hot. We were set on summiting Katahdin as our finish so that wasn’t an option. Though I really struggled in the heat. Greg.

    Did you guys use/consider travel insurance?
    I read about a guy who got pneumonia and had to be CHOPPERED off the PCT. I thought that was scary until I realized what the bill for get a helicopter ride off a mountain would be.

    • @ChicaandSunsets
      @ChicaandSunsets  6 років тому

      We didn't. Maybe should have though. We walked by one lady on the trail who had broken her ankle and was waiting for paramedics. We heard later that they had to use ATV's to rescue her off the mountain.

    Question: In so many of your videos you said, “Today was a hard day.” Do you recall a relatively easy hiking day on the trail?

    • @ChicaandSunsets
      @ChicaandSunsets  6 років тому +1

      Hiking north through southern PA into Pine Grove Furnace SP, we actually did our biggest day that day (26.4 miles) as we heard it was flat and lovely - and it WAS! Also in Maine towards the end of the 100-mile wilderness and into Baxter State Park to right before Katahdin was relatively easy. I'm sure there were other "relatively easy" days, but I can't remember them right now. Most days were hard - in one way or another! :) -- Chica
