You might have felt scared AFTER the lion, but at the time, your hands didn’t even shake holding the camera!, Damn! Guts of steel! The woman, the myth, the legend! And then you played the harmonica to it! I was laughing in amazement!
I’m about 5 years away from 20 years in the military and will set out for the PCT for a thru-hike upon retiring. I came across your channel and am thoroughly inspired and can’t wait to start my own journey. Thank you for what you do and sharing your experiences. 🙏
My family is SO sick of me talking about my hike, when I can do it, giving them specs of tents, bags, pads...pack weight issues, resupplies, Garmin, Trail Days...I have bored them all beyond tears.
Husband hates the idea of me going, but knows I'm going, regardless...teenage daughter is all 'nah.' But my son (15) and youngest daughter (9) would LOVE to come. I told them I'll take them both after high school. Maybe take a year and just goof off. But I'm going ASAP.
Dixie...we are here to listen/watch for the exact same reason you post. We can't get enough...you will never bore us with content. ❤
Your hike with your mom should be just that...you and mom. Thanks for sharing!
I would encourage you to protect your precious time with your Mom. You will not regret it down the road (latter in life).
Agreed! Mom and daughter time is precious. Live it up as the fantastic duo you are!
Ditto! This time is too important. Take advantage of it while you still can. Thanks!
I agree with all these replies . . . but invite me ;) LOL I'm close to your mom's age
Just to say I really agree with the other replies, for the same reasons. Also, putting myself in your mother's place, she likely would be doing this to be with you, to do a challenging hike, have some time off, and several other reasons -- maybe not including doing meet-ups with people she doesn't know.
Dixie Darlni', I believe you'd make an Excellent Speaker to the younger generation out yonder. Your Personality, Knowledge & manner of Speech would really allow you to Connect with folks who have not yet experienced the thrill of the Wilderness. Inspire them to get off the Couch & away from the T V. To get out and Discover Themselves & Real Life.
I can think of at least a dozen young folks who have told me years later of Adventures they.ve had because of stories I told sitting around a camp fire when they were kids.
Best Wishes for your Future Young Lady. Happy Trails....
Dont ever feel bad about saying no. Its your time with your mother, not a fan hike. The meet and greet at a location is a good idea.
Yes to documenting posture improvement. I’m so slumpy from years of computer work. Hikers and non hikers could all benefit. 😊
How bout the Great Trail in Canada? It's justa measley lil 15,000 miles. 😉 I did see a Canadian newscast feature the first female to complete it. I think it took her 2 yrs. Seems like a good challenge.
Yes, keep it special with your Mom!
Really enjoyed the video! Happy that you post the recording for us to watch. So down to earth and helpful. See you on the trail. Great video Dixie! Enjoyed 🙌🏻
Yes you should definitely do this with your mother just the to you and the two of you only
There is absolutely no harm and having people come up and say hello chat for a few and then leave as long as it's just you two are doing the things you need to do to get back in touch with each other
Always love hearing from you. Your experiences and knowledge!!!
You had a fantastic CDT, know I have to re watch the episodes.
Thank you!
It is great that your mom is hiking with you it is something that you will hold in your heart forever. Thank you Dixie I certainly enjoy being able to tag along to watch your experiences on the trails.
That speaking gig is awesome Dixie. Well done. How exciting!
So happy for you for getting this offer in SC. Hope it goes well and it'll become regular thing for you. When you do what you love, it never seems like work :)
You do alllllll the Q&As you want to! I NEVER tire of hearing you talk about your hikes. I just keep missing the live ones because I don’t get to my email often. Thank you so much for sharing!
Thanks for all the great content Dixie!
Very NiCe of You to share Your TiMe and thoughts with us. Grace ,Peace and Health to You and Yours🙏🎶 Exciting adventures awaight 🌅
I love the idea of hiking with your Mom. Spend the time with your Mom while you can. You will have amazing memories for the rest your life and so will she.
You should definitely move towards public speaking, you have a flair for encouraging and dealing with obstacles. I am a 54 yr old and haven't picked up my backpack in 18 years. You have inspired me and awakened my AT dream...
Love your videos, admire what you’re doing and absolutely love the sound of your voice.
SUPER AWESOME, You and your mom! Can't wait :)
I’m hiking the PCT with a friend as soon after we graduate high school this year. Thanks for giving so much insight into trail life!
Aaron S THAT IS AMAZING! I wish I had when I was 18.
Definitely agree you'll make a great speaker! Excited for your opportunity coming up! Hope you get to do more of that between hikes.
If you have a toast masters near you
You should join! It would be great for your public speaking
It will eliminate the um factor 🤓
You are amazing inspiration to the young and “older” (like me)
I am glad to hear about your opportunity it is awesome that you are being invited to do things like that. You are an inspiration. You have inspired me.. Thank you.
You'd be a great motivational speaker...just hearing your story and watching your videos has inspired me..my reward for retiring from the military will be to complete a thru-hike, most likely the CDT (it looked beautiful)..thank you so much for being here as a kind of lighthouse guiding us towards reaching our goals and truly finding ourselves..
Very cool news on the speaking invitation. You will do great!
Thank you for your videos! I love them!
Haha after doing the AT, PCT, and CDT, the Camino will feel like a cakewalk to you (literally - most of it is paved)! Definitely a super fun experience though. When I did it, I met a bunch of people who had done the AT solo and were doing the Camino with either their children or their significant others to give them a taste of walking long distances :)
it was cool to hear another vid.got the dixy fix !sounds great about your plans for hiking and writing.some real exciting things to do up coming.keep it up !lol
So thankful for your channel, of all the thru-hikers I have followed, your content is by far my favourite format! One comment, if I may be so bold: really do your research on the TA if you're planning on doing it! Many people have come off the American trails and were very frustrated with it (mostly the roadwalks and the mud). But you always have such a positive outlook (and so much experience with the CDT as well now), that I'm sure you'll be fine.
xx
Thank you again Dixie for all you do. you answered my question in that would you ever consider doing the AT again. keep up the good work and will keep watching. stay healthy and safe.
Great Q&A, could totally see you as a motivational speaker, you’re so exceptional at articulating how you achieved your goals. An inspirational speaker that shares her adventures, but it relates to so many other life experiences. Kudos
G
Definitely a good idea to spend time like that with your mom. I met a young lady in the Sierra in 2017 who had hiked the JMT in 2015 and was back with her mom. They were taking it slow and ebjoying the tie together as they planned to spend 4 weeks hiking in the Sierra. I thought that was so cool.
All I can say is you are the COOLEST. Continued Happy Trails!!
Yay Dixie great q&a. Looking forward to you doing the TA down here, on the subject of fitness and posture how about trying Pilates, should be lots of studios around. Hiking with your mum will be a great experience for you both, enjoy being together and having the time to appreciate each other, may not happen again for a long time.
Thanks for posting
Thank you for your videos always interesting near by practice.
Yay for audiobooks! I have reading comprehension issues so audiobooks are the best way for me to go and I’m so down for it
Exciting to hear about the speaking invitation, congratulations.
Thanks for posting these q and a's from Patreon. I just bought the "Time of my life" audio book you mentioned was your favorite of the CDT and the reviews make it sound really great too. I'm looking forward to giving it a listen. Love your work and that's exciting you got the offer to go "all expenses paid" to be a speaker at the college! Motivational-speaker "DIXIE!" Sounds like the perfect next step. Okay. Time to finish watching this video. (Stopped in the middle to go check out the Swaze book.)
It’s weird how when you watch someone on you tube a lot you feel like you know them, almost like you have a relationship with them and they don’t know you from doodly
i know it's kinda off topic but do anyone know a good website to watch new tv shows online ?
@Collin Abdullah I would suggest flixzone. You can find it on google =)
@Collin Abdullah I watch on Flixzone. Just search on google for it =)
@Collin Abdullah i watch on flixzone. Just google for it :)
I beat plantar fasciitis by doing 2 things; using 1 pair of superfeet *orange* in all my outdoor footwear, and on my doctor's advice I got a supportive pair of house shoes, put some p.f. heel wedges in them, and I don't walk around without them. No more heel pain for me, unless I wear bad boots with a huge drop or stand around a lot. I hope that's helpful! Your backpacking advice sure helps me a lot!
I was late to your CDT doc being out on a walk myself this summer, but I just finished your videos with a final binge. Thanks for lettting us tag along. In this Q&A you mention posture, hiking and problems ou experienced. This summer I took an "Aarn Bodyback" over the length of the alps (2500 miles / 600.000 ft vertical climb / 125 days). It is not perfect and certainly not the lightest construction out there. But it has large front pockets that don't just hang down your shoulder straps but actually have an aluminium rod transfering the weight down to the hip belt. In consequence the weight is very balanced and you walk upright. I opted for it because for different reasons I needed to carry as much as 40 pounds. As I said, there were a few minor things I did not like and I had to MacGyver somthing to fix a hip belt issue, but as for weight distribution (you walk upright) and overall, it is my favorite pack I have worn in 15.000 miles on trail. So, you might want to give the aarn website a look. Should you indeed do the Te Araroa, the company is from Kiwi land and sort of on the side of the trail (well, by US standards). They have been around for a while but most ultralighters in the US give them a pass because there are lighter packs out there. They go so light, that no special solution of balancing weight (below 10% of body weight) is required. But depending on the weight you need to carry (water/food) or your spine/back, you might find that better weight distribution rather than shaving off another 3 pounds is the answer.
Louie L'amour rocks! And so do you. I had not thought about audio books, great idea. And thanks for the Damascus comment. I live in VA, didn't know about that town.
You will make an awesome speaker!!
You did the right thing. At twice your age I envy your hikes. Live, love, laugh and walk. Carry on. Love my Solomons.
Hi Dixie ! Just can't get enough of you say'in Ya'all. I have p.fasc to,along with restless leg.Tried all that, didn't work. Now I take Requip.
I love your q&a videos.’hope you’re doing well jess!
this sounds great. Mount Elbert was my second 14er. SE approach, Black Cloud trailhead on why 82. all 4 approaches are hard but the SE approach is warmest and prettiest .
You would make an excellent motivational speaker!
TED talks should schedule you
@@theodorerzepski8491 oh heck yes! That would be awesome!
She has the "fire in the bottle"
Lightning
Absolutely!
You definitely should be an ambassador for the hiking community. Wish you could get a gig like Red Beard did for ZPacks. Get paid to hike and test gear!
Always good to get a notice of a"HW" video,,enjoy listening about your experiences and thoughts about trail life...So many choices of next trail,,but I think , as you mentioned , some of the trails of other countries sounds very interesting...I'm sure a little Inter-continental travel would be in dreams and thoughts....Appears Al. must be home for now, but where do you think you might call home ?? Back to COLO. ?? Nice to hear of the speaking engagement...I would think that any/all of the quality outdoor gear suppliers would be thrilled to be a part of that. (would be only to their best interests) ....Thanks for the "COFFEE AND A CHAT WITH DIXIE" and as always.......Stay Safe and God Bless.........
Mt elbert is fun, and its still a challenge if you take the class 2 route. That is for the summer route however.
Well here I sit, just had back surgery on Dec5th and recovery has not been fun. I follow several backpacking channels and have been watching them since I can't be out there. Your videos have provided great motivation as well as a distraction to what has been a difficult recovery. Having to reevaluate my kit to try and get to a weight I can manage post recovery, not sure I'll get there but if not I can live through your adventures here😊
If you do PCT again, we live in Tehachapi and would be glad to offer up rides & assist with resupply. Everything here is spaced far apart & it's a long walk from town back to the trail 😁🐻
Happy thankgiving. I would like to see video of you and your mom hiking
Thanks for sharing Dixie ... 👍👍👍👍
No matter where you hike, I will always be with you... Day after Day Dixie dear :)
A belated Happy Thanksgiving Dixie!
oh, so THAT’s how Perk got his name lol. i was curious, thanks for pointing it out. I have been using a Primula Brew Buddy. it’s on Amazon. i also use a double wall 450ml Snow Peak cup. this combo is light and works well at brewing and staying warm
I wondered that too. It's good to find answers to questions
Simplicity ....I so get that! I section hike and that is what I always miss when we are done.
Oh also ....I am so jealous of your mom going with you!! Such an epic time y’all will have
Can't believe you didn't mention the trail show.. even tho I never listen to the trail show its got to be the best podcast on hiking? Big fan keep all this going!
The older style (early 80s) coller bone brace was petty good for posture as well.
Thank you Dixie. So glad to see that you are keeping in touch with us..Could you share your set up for videoing your trips. If the set ups changed from one trail over the other??
details please. Chris ama Indy girl
Hmm, Mt. Elbert, May have to make the drive for that one; maybe Trail Daze(days) too!
Dixie beefed up would be a sight to see...lol
LOVED your hikes and it's inspired me. Maybe I will be healthy enough to do when I retire.
It's not very long, only about 12 miles, the Arivipa Canyon in Az. There is also the Az trail.
Veterans day perks for Perk. Awesome!
Did I hear Te Araroa?! You're gonna LOOOOVE it down here.
Dixie: You build up those arms canoeing, portaging and hiking in beautiful Algonquin Park. Killarney is also nice. Avoid cold and blackflies in early spring.
Enjoying your posts!
Have you considered doing trail maintenance trip as a meet up. On the AT and PCT. it would be cool to hike and maintain the trail and socialize with us.
you could hike the river to river trail. it's roughly 180 miles and the Shawnee National forest is a hidden gem.. only do it in winter. too many ticks spiders and snakes in the warmer months
Elbert sounds great. I will try to attend.
I would be very interested in reading books about your journey on each trail!
Ever think about a concierge travel gig? As in taking a small group on a “guided hike” of sorts?
Hey Dixie! Thanks for all of your videos, I really appreciate all of the time and effort that you put into them. If you did it over again would you get The Blazer bear can? I am trying to decide which bear can I want and if the Wild Ideas cannisters are worth the money. Thanks again!!
Yes your hike should be just you and your mom in my opinion. a meet up sounds fun. Come to NY one day! Lol!
YES! NY! Please!
Hi Dixie! I've been watching your wonderful videos literally all day, gathering the courage to make the decision to quit my job and do the A.T next summer :) Thank you! Anyways, I've done five of the Spanish Caminos and the official one twice, so if I can help out with any kind of information let me know. Greetings from Copenhagen, Denmark.
Really enjoyed all your videos, I watched your and a few other thru hikers while working out on my elliptical. I lost 25 pounds , 200 to 175, so Big Thanks from Texas . Just not as big 😁
A few years ago I made the mistake of having new boots that were too small when I section hiked the White Mountains and lost both big toenails and both pinky toenails so I know what it's like. Mine all fell off on their own. Altras Now!!! :)
For your body issues, I cannot recommend strongly enough, see a Rolfer. They usually don’t charge for an inquiry / consultation visit. You have nothing to lose by doing so.
Love you Dixie ♥️♥️♥️
I heard "YaaaaaaaaY"
Great.
Oooo Aaron you should do a group field trip lol I’d love to hike AT I live in eastern Pennsylvania and no one has the hiker fever and no desire lol I won’t go alone ~ have extremely bad knees 😬...... great QA Jessica!!!!! Love to see video with some of your concoctions for cooking meals 🤔!!!! Yes you ever come this way to speak I’m there
Hey Dixie! Do a meet up in Columbus, GA!!! Maybe a Pine Mountain group hike?
In South Carolina?! Please please keep us updated because I’d love to see you speak right before I start the AT.
I haven't tried Altra's or Solomon's, but I've been rather happy with my Suacony Peregrine 7's that I've had for about a year. Of course I've not hiked anything longer than about 15 miles with them.
If you do the El Camino, you may want to consider not doing it during the Pilgrimage. It is a mad house with people racing ahead to get the best hostels. My daughters' did the north trail along the coast of Spain. They started the end of Sep., 2015, and hiked through October...and pretty much had it all to themselves. Just a thought.
Love your videos.
I recommend Sweden for hiking and my friend says try Austria.
I got acupuncture for my plantar fasciitis, and it worked.
I'd definitely buy an audio book from your hikes. You've got to do that.
On this video you mention hiking overseas, but how about the American Discovery Trail (Coast to Coast), the Eastern Continental Trail (Key West to Belle Isle, Canada) or the Iditarod Trail (Alaska)
I’m in Chicago so if you do an east coast meet up I’d love to come. I can see about trail days just depends on where things are at that point
Hi Dixie, have you ever hiked Flagg Mountain ? It’s not too far from Opelika and you could start the AT from there taking the Pinhoti trail.
Maybe if you do decide to redo the triple crown you could try them SOBO. Then you’d see places at different seasons. But exploring the world is cool too ;)
I also love Louis L'amour. The official audiobooks are very well produced with a full cast making them highly listenable. You might also check out Elmore Leonard - especially his early westerns which are mostly short stories (like 3:10 To Yuma, for example). His later stuff is very funny. Stephen King and Larry McMurtry are also great but tend to be very long stories.
Would love to see you do AT as a SOBO
You need to come to Boston. A clinic at the REI next to Fenway Park.
