The solution that we as a nation came up with to address the wealth disparity between the Sinhalese and Tamils was to drag the Tamils down to below the levels of the Sinhalese, rather than the more sensible option of using the independence gained from the British to finally provide opportunities for the Sinhalese to bring them up to the same living standards Tamils enjoyed and to finally abandon divide and conquer politics that does not represent our culture whatsoever and was a disgusting foreign 'contamination' that we had to endure. This happened shortly after independence and set the tone for Sri Lanka as a country full of people who'd rather drag another person down by any means necessary to make themselves feel better about their own insecurities (in this case not wanting to be 'second' to Tamils, even though Tamils are Sri Lankans too) than focus on bettering their lives and working for it.

All the issues MIA raises here are true and accurate. They are also felt by the progressive and intelligent strata of the Sri Lankan and Sinhala community. These issues are real, they exist --- and truth be told, some of these are being addressed post-2015 though in very slow measures. However, most importantly, People who diss MIA here (mostly Sinhala) are without basis or understanding. They have very little idea of Tamil suffering and of the tragedy of the North between 1976 and 2009 -- and after. I am Sri Lankan and a Sinhalese. I am part of the majority youth in the country that formed an integral part of the nationwide movement that saw the overthrowing of the regime of President Rajapakshe and his corrupt, incompetent government. I am outraged by some of the comments made by MIA on this video. I'm gonna spell out my objections and the reasons for the benefit of anyone living outside Sri Lanka who wants to get a far clearer, unbiased picture of things. "The new goverment is basically the same as the last one but with a new face" ,"the majority of what's made up this government used to work for Rajapakshe" - NO and NO. This government majority did not work for Rajapakshe. They were in the opposition. Last time this type of government was in power was the time the cease-fire and the peace talks took place. The majority Sri Lankans voted this government in because they wanted a change for the betterment. The absolute incompetence with which the Rajapakshe government handled the war crime allegations was one of the reasons the people demanded a change. If MIA had taken the time to inspect the newly appointed government, she would have seen that a separate Ministry with a Tamil Minister was appointed to take care of re-settlements and that the composition of the cabinet roughly reflects the ethnic composition of the country, which if she knew anything about Sri Lankan politics she would know is a significant step towards change. "the hundred day plan doesn't include Tamils" - YES, it doesn't explicitly. But the 100 day plan is a very short term plan and it is meant to achieve, among other things, a form of decentralization of power, which many would agree would help in resolving an ethnic conflict where a minority lacks representation. More importantly, the main policy statement of the new President's campaign does include Tamils and their re-settlement. "but as time goes on i think we're gonna find out that he's pretty similar to the old one" - I can understand mild skepticism at the new government. But I don't understand how someone who hasn't lived in Sri Lanka for the past 5 years can gain the audacity to make such a sweeping declaration(brief trips North doesn't count). People in Sri Lanka voted and got the change they wanted. Anyone would be wise to wait and see what this government does in the next few days and the years to come. The Sri Lankan people believe this government is capable of achieving everything the Tamils have wanted for so long, and much more. I, as a citizen who voted for the change, find her presumptions insulting. "since 2009, there hasn't been a bomb in Sri Lanka....and this is not because the Rajapakshe government defeated the Tamil tigers, it's because the Tamils were embracing the concept of peace" - a big NO. Is she implying that the Tamil people have decided against bombing and killing innocent people in Colombo and other areas because they decided to give peace a try? Above all else, this statement is insulting to the Tamils that she claims to defend and perpetuates the "Tamil=LTTE" stereotype. In fact, if she were ever in touch with Southern Sri Lanka as much she claims to be with the Northern areas, she would know that the Tamil=LTTE mindset has been extinct for quite a while now. The true facts of the matter are that the LTTE who were armed terrorists, were defeated and the Sri Lankan government has been incompetent in handling the situation since then and in providing them with the necessary assistance and support they very much deserve, for the past 5 years. The Sri Lankan people have decided to change course and we are very optimistic about the future. After posting my earlier comment I have read up about her life. She's had such an abnormal life. She should now try to understand how many Sinhalese have consistently asked for a proper political solution. I've never bought this "we have many Tamil friends" argument. There has to be carefully thought out legislation, and we should try to get people like MIA to reform sufficiently to be on our side. If we continue to alienate them we will, as you say, fail to convince the world that there have always been decent people on all sides of the ethnic divides.

Aren’t freedom fighters supposed to be fighting to end oppression. For example, the police make nightly calls at random to see if you have any new unregistered people in your home and what you’re up to. That’s not freedom. Ireland was ruled by England for 700 years but a group of rebel freedom fighters eventually got the majority of the country back. The Irish were being oppressed. In one example the order came from the queen that Irish front house doors were only allowed to be painted black. My uncle was a really successful business man in Sri Lanka and he was imprisoned by the Sri Lankan government for being rich. Thamil people are not allowed to succeed in Sri Lanka. My uncle was selfless and would buy homeless people homes. He died because the government killed him. The Sri Lankan government had bombed thamil cities and said 'thamil terrorists' did it. The only way you can live in Sri Lanka as a Thamil is if you suppress yourself an all of your abilities.

From what i know majority of countries governments have this policy that they do not negotiate with terrorists. i have watched this interview twice It strikes me that she is deceptively very clever. She appears very casual yet there is much gravitas in what she says. Her broad logic and gut feelings is not to jump on the bandwagon that everything will be now fine. I think you missed that part where MIA specifically said that both parties that created the war commited atrocities and they were both in the wrong. What MIA is advocating for here is all the innocent Tamil civilans who were stuck in the middle of the conflict. The LTTE and the Sri lankan governments were both corrupt and they all have blood on thier hands. What we as a people should focus now is healing the wounds caused and moving forward through representation and reconciliation. As a Sinhalese Sri Lankan, I want to be part of that change and it can only happen if we work together. A first step for most Sri lankans would be too try and overcome the supermacist and nationalistic propaganda we were force fed by the media and seek out the voices of the other side.

This happened shortly after independence and set the tone for Sri Lanka as a country full of people who'd rather drag another person down by any means necessary to make themselves feel better about their own insecurities (in this case not wanting to be 'second' to Tamils, even though Tamils are Sri Lankans too) than focus on bettering their lives and working for it.

I am Sri Lankan and a Sinhalese. I am part of the majority youth in the country that formed an integral part of the nationwide movement that saw the overthrowing of the regime of President Rajapakshe and his corrupt, incompetent government. I am outraged by some of the comments made by MIA on this video. I'm gonna spell out my objections and the reasons for the benefit of anyone living outside Sri Lanka who wants to get a far clearer, unbiased picture of things.
"The new goverment is basically the same as the last one but with a new face" ,"the majority of what's made up this government used to work for Rajapakshe" - NO and NO. This government majority did not work for Rajapakshe. They were in the opposition. Last time this type of government was in power was the time the cease-fire and the peace talks took place. The majority Sri Lankans voted this government in because they wanted a change for the betterment. The absolute incompetence with which the Rajapakshe government handled the war crime allegations was one of the reasons the people demanded a change. If MIA had taken the time to inspect the newly appointed government, she would have seen that a separate Ministry with a Tamil Minister was appointed to take care of re-settlements and that the composition of the cabinet roughly reflects the ethnic composition of the country, which if she knew anything about Sri Lankan politics she would know is a significant step towards change.

But the 100 day plan is a very short term plan and it is meant to achieve, among other things, a form of decentralization of power, which many would agree would help in resolving an ethnic conflict where a minority lacks representation. The true facts of the matter are that the LTTE who were armed terrorists, were defeated and the Sri Lankan government has been incompetent in handling the situation since then and in providing them with the necessary assistance and support they very much deserve, for the past 5 years. p.s.: When I said ethnic conflict, I meant more of an ethnic tension/injustice problem and a problem with lack of representation. MIA uses the term "ethnic cleansing" and I don't think it correctly reflects the situation. In recent years that term was used to refer to ethnic wars in African countries and in the Bosnian War. The situation in Sri Lanka is nowhere even near that level.

I've never bought this "we have many Tamil friends" argument. There has to be carefully thought out legislation, and we should try to get people like MIA to reform sufficiently to be on our side. Why are some groups labeled "freedom fighters" and some groups labeled "terrorists"? War is war and the end result is people die. War is never a good. To say though that the ones fighting back any way they know how against injustice and violence, are themselves the worst offenders, is to have a pinpoint-small view on the situation.
Aren’t freedom fighters supposed to be fighting to end oppression. For example, the police make nightly calls at random to see if you have any new unregistered people in your home and what you’re up to. That’s not freedom. Ireland was ruled by England for 700 years but a group of rebel freedom fighters eventually got the majority of the country back. The Irish were being oppressed. In one example the order came from the queen that Irish front house doors were only allowed to be painted black. And that’s where the trademark every house has a different coloured door came from-Irish spirit. In an ideal world there would be no war or fighting. Unfortunately not reality though.

My uncle was a really successful business man in Sri Lanka and he was imprisoned by the Sri Lankan government for being rich. Thamil people are not allowed to succeed in Sri Lanka. I think you missed that part where MIA specifically said that both parties that created the war commited atrocities and they were both in the wrong. What MIA is advocating for here is all the innocent Tamil civilans who were stuck in the middle of the conflict. What we as a people should focus now is healing the wounds caused and moving forward through representation and reconciliation. I made a longish comment on M.I.A. statement here, seven years ago; will readers be able to search and discover it? This week I have "Replied" many comments by others. I've used my real name; I've tried to be consistent, although situations have changed. My views have evolved, but I will not deny what I have earlier said. If anybody sees this, please respond. Criticise me if you so desire.
During the WW2,Germans mascaraed 6million innocent Jewish(some Jewish fought for German victory in WW1) in holocaust .That was the majority against miniority .However in Sri lanka , That was completely opposite thing.Minority against majority.Sinhalese people didn't like about British colonialism from the beginning.Then British chose Tamils to support their rules by placing tamils in higher position than sinhalese. That is the beginning of the question.I visited Jaffna in this month and i see in my own eye that there is some Tamil people who live without even proper toilets.M.I.A newer helped them to get out of their misery because she (and most of Tamil politicians ) wants that wound to promote their activities.

Well lets get things clear. Crime was done by both the Ealamist(LTTE) and the Rajapakse regime. As a Sri Lankan i would agree with you one thing , he and those responsible should face war crimes trial, justice must be served. But i dont agree with some of the peoples statement of having a separate state.

Did you know that tamils actually never wanted a separate state as such. When sinhalese won the election, the British asked tamils what they wanted. It was the Tamils who said they wanted to live together with the Sinhalese and didn’t want anything. If they were interested in a separate state they could have easily done it back then. But later they suffered so much under the SL govt. so I can understand why ltte asked for a separate state.
