Watching you and your father rebuilding and operating tractors and such, is the way things should be more often. Working and learning together is one of the best things in life. I'm sure many of us enjoy watching your videos. People like you are part of the good things in this country. You are doing a fine job restoring that Farmall. Good luck to both of you.
Your doing a better than new restoration on this Toby and Sr. One piece of advice for you. Think Bicycle. On a bicycle when you take a tire off and remove the tube there is a belt that protects the tube from the spike nut and the rim. Replicate that belt by using duct tape. I used to pull an M back in the 80's and EVERY tire tube I took off had rusted to the rim. Take the duct tape and wrap the rim in 2 or 3 layers. Start at the bead and go around the rim. Press the tape down onto the bevel with nice crisp folds or cuts. Then work your way to the center of the rim. Get some sort of roller and bear into it to get a good contact across the taped area. Cut the valve stem hole and mount the tire and tube. One set of tires I did in '83-5 area I can pull the tires and tubes out with ZERO issues. I'm doing that on EVERY tractor rim I mount a tire on now. Works well for me and ask you to just consider it.
I honestly don't know how anyone can't like the fine detail you are going through to bring this back to better then new condition. This is the way I try to do everything. And I will admit, sometimes that is a curse too. Thumbs Up!
I was happy to see that PTO shield. Old Emma didn't have one and the PTO shaft took 2 shirts and 2 sweaters off me one cool October evening in 1981. I still have aches and pains from that.
Awesome job sir, I have a nordan wide front on my 1940 M and it uses the original Farmall front wheels. I replaced the seals and bearings in it and it actually takes the same IH bearings
I’m currently restoring my 46 M. Then my 43 H with the factory IH wide front then my cub and super A. After watching Kenny working on his H and you guys restoring your super M it got me motivated to get some of my projects done. I’m enjoying it but the financial advisor (my wife) not so much
years ago a friend and me were painting my '46 Jeep. We were using Dupont Dulux black and got the 'bright' idea to mix Rustoleum Aluminum paint for a metallic affect. It didn't work - the Rustoleum separated out of the Dulux. There may have been some drinking going on at the time!! The M sure is looking good!
My maternal uncle was an IH dealer in Denmark. As a boy, I was on holiday with him and stayed all day in the workshop. They happened to steam clean a used overhauled tractor and painted it. Everything that did not need to be painted was smeared in grease, which could easily be removed with a cloth later :-)
I'm totally with you on brushing any kind of silver or aluminum or even gold paint. There seems to be a lot of flake. In the modeling world, the same holds true. That's how I know. I airbrushed silver / aluminum color once to paint the wheel sets on an HO scale train locomotive. I like to never got all the flake out of my airbrush and the paint bowl. I used twice as much or more laquer thinner to clean and I had to disassemble and clean. I could still see flake but didn't seem to contaminate other colors. You made a very good move with regular brush. Really enjoying this series.
I do recommend you replace the calcium in the rears with Rim guard. Won't eat the rims and gives the tractor extra ballast for the rears plus gives a much smoother ride. Have to say, I haven't seen any books like that for either Oliver and John Deere, heck haven't even really seen much on Fords and the Alis Chalmers either. You can't use a "rattle can" on those parts you ran out of paint with? Got a friend who was into painting, did it professionally, retired now. He'd know how to paint those front rims and make them look like factory. Great video, cheers :)
Looking good, on the front wheels the wheel portion you can brush paint it with the aluminum paint. I've painted several Massey Ferguson tractors and had painted it all red and after it dried I would go back and paint the aluminum later. I worked for a Massey dealership so I had to paint it to specs and the rim had to be aluminum. You couldn't even tell I had brush painted them. I even had to paint the lug nuts after I put them back on.
I enjoy every video ..... This Super M looks spectacular! Just a quick tip. After cleaning the tires I treat them with clear floor wax . Two coats do it . The tires stay nice and black and actually keep clean for months. It helps to preserve the rubber as well . I coat all rubber parts hoses etc. ( Pledge make a wax for Vinyl Floors /Walmart)
Anytime you come across books such as "Farmall Letter Series Tractors" (Originality Guide) - please tell us about them - they are so helpful when you are restoring a machine you did not grow up with.
Mentioning the "Rustolium" brand of paint. It's excellent paint. I bought Rustoleum paint for on of my John Deere's. It is still in relatively goodhape 40 years later. :-)
"Gonna fix the old M, she's got a knock" ... hah...you're fixing her alright. Gonna have to find a winter beater farmall now lol. It's an "itis"....fixitis, long as I'm hereitis, can't leave thatitis, always wanted toitis. Looking great. Thanks for sharing
Looking great. Squatch, after you have completed the rebuild will you be giving us a total cost of the restoration, including man hours? I know it is a labor of love, but it would be interesting to know.
Are you familiar with the "I save tractors" channel? He specializes in wheelhorse tractors and replacement parts for them. Edit: (isavetractors) channel.
Must not be hot where you are , wearing a sweatshirt ? Still in the low 90’s in central North Carolina. I do enjoy your Channel, thanks for sharing your talents, you and Dad
Where did you get your new rims from? I had to patch the rusty rims on my 504 with a welder. Couldn't afford new rims at the time. Though now, can't tell I had to weld a washer where the valve stem is and then basically 3D print the rest with a MIG gun. Also, check out stripe it all graphics. They got a handy little tool to put pin stripe stickers on rims and keep it uniform.
Thanks for the up date on how the tractors were painted. And on your front wheels, why not brush the aluminum paint on like you did on the rear wheels. Nobody would know. Are the solid front wheels suppose to be all red ?
Are their any other M&W parts on your M? Back in the 50s we didn’t have the internet to look up parts, had really on ag. Magazines for upgrades. Project is coming along very well, can’t wait to see her working next spring.
New rims look good. You can spray that Rust-Oleum aluminum no problem. Just keep in mind when spraying it can appear brighter than your brushed application. Did you use a foam brush? That's the only way I can apply it streak free.
I like a moisture cured urethane high metallic, Aluthane is the product I used for my tear drop camper, pretty reasonable, run you a bit over 100 bucks a gallon.
I spray rustolum threw a paint gun all the time. I thin it with acetone (paint thinner) because usually it’s pretty thick, I’ve never sprayed that aluminum before or painted it with a brush, but I’ve never had issues spraying it, and I have about the same paint gun as you. After I clean the gun I’ll just leave it sit with acetone (cleaner) in it.
It would be more likely Xylene to thin out the thicker paint so it flows way nicer out of spray-paint gun and would have a glossier dry paint look ,,,,not orange peal look as not thinned out rustolieum !
I agree, Squatch & Sr: this was an unplanned project that started due to engine knock. Once it's ready we're planning to put the Super M back to work, correct? I mean it's not like being prepped for sale or anything like that. If those rims kick up a pebble, or a branch scratches the bodywork will you be getting out the paint and primer again? Don't think so! That being said - i guess when you are that deep into the details of a restoration it just kind of takes over and you want every last detail perfect. Never having done such a thing I guess I shouldn't be commenting from an armchair, lol.
Norden must have made a couple different styles of wide fronts for the letter series. We have one on our second H we got and it has the normal clamp style.
Squatch253 Very interesting!! Thanks for the info! I’ve got a question for you on the Norden fronts, do you know where to get parts for them? I’ve heard from the Facebook groups they are pretty hard to find parts for. We are in need of a new spindle for our one side, the bottom part that holds the hub on has been broken off and welded back on at some point but they didn’t get it on right. Dad thought was to cut it and try to do a better job at welding it back on but if we could find new parts it would be even better!
Squatch253 Shoot. That was my thoughts too was to find another. Or as dad suggested find a different front end entirely like a factory IH or Schwartz with easier to come by parts. I’m glad you were able to fix yours without needing to find different parts. Thanks for the replies!!
Great job Squatch, I paint the silver on the same way, where did you fine the IH book? they are like Gold, thanks for making all of these videos they too are like Gold.
Lot of people knock Rust-Oleum paint. Because it fades so bad. I've had very good results with it. When painting rusted metal. I've clean it best I can. Primed it with the Rust-Oleum rusty metal primer. Then Rust-Oleum top coat. I have a fertilizer spreader. I painted that way in 1997. Still looks good. Just wash it out every time I use it. Spray the parts that have the paint worn off from constant fertilizer running over it. With a mixture of diesel and cheap Walmart motor oil. It does get shedded. But that fertilizer is terrible on painted steel.
You could spray the rustoleum paint on the rims but the smart thing to do is to by a cheap paint gun and then paint it on, so if you do ruin and paint gun, it's only a cheap one and not an expensive one
So if senior is pimping his ride, I will say adding armrest to the seat. ? Or making the seat more cushy comfortable and possibly spring Ride. I don't know I'm just guessing. Lol
Did you do any clearcoat on the Farmall? I know here in Arizona the tractor paint fades quickly in the sun and I had a professional look at it who recommended clearcoating it. Just looking for your opinion or thoughts. I have never sprayed clearcoat so I have some reservations about doing it until I try, but if it makes the paint stay glossy longer in AZ, I am all for it.

Great job I hope you're not going to leave that beautiful paint job out outside in the weather are you going to keep her in the shed or garage

That is gonna be one superb example of a super M truly a credit to u both 👍👍
When Squatch253 decides to paint (never thought it would happen) he goes 200%!!!! Enjoying the painting.
I love the attention to detail in the work your putting in to this tractor
I honestly don't know how anyone can't like the fine detail you are going through to bring this back to better then new condition. This is the way I try to do everything. And I will admit, sometimes that is a curse too. Thumbs Up!
The more you guys work on this tractor, the more amazed I am at the complexity of the thing! Man, they really did detailed engineering work back then.
I was happy to see that PTO shield. Old Emma didn't have one and the PTO shaft took 2 shirts and 2 sweaters off me one cool October evening in 1981. I still have aches and pains from that.
If this is what it looks like when its a field tractor, I would LOVE to see one as a show tractor! Great job guys!
Thanks Squatch, appreciate you and your Pops, putting out these Vids.

one positive thing about the pandemic, new Squatch253 video's every couple of days!
Thanks gentlemen. Another great, albeit brief, episode!
Looks really good. I'm ready to hear it run.
Nice job. I can’t wait to see the M go back together and running.
Senior "pimping his ride" - good one! Your videos are the best!
I'm totally with you on brushing any kind of silver or aluminum or even gold paint. There seems to be a lot of flake. In the modeling world, the same holds true. That's how I know. Nice work ,,I use a piece of coil stock as a shield between the tire and rim when painting, Save that 10.00 masking tape.
I do recommend you replace the calcium in the rears with Rim guard. Won't eat the rims and gives the tractor extra ballast for the rears plus gives a much smoother ride.

Looks great so far....thanks for the updates...
Thank you! Loved the book. I always wondered how things came off the line and now I know.
Mask the center of the rim and paint the rest silver. Looking good boys. Hopefully I'll see it in Nowthen next year.

Excellent video keep up the good work 👍👍👍👍
I really think the black starters and generator give a restored tractor a good look
Looking really nice. It will be great to hear and see it running. Thanks.
Nice work as always
Fantastic job!

Worth mentioning the authors of that outstanding book... Guy Fay and Andy Kraushaar.
Mentioning the "Rustolium" brand of paint. It's excellent paint. I bought Rustoleum paint for on of my John Deere's. It is still in relatively goodhape 40 years later. :-)
Crazy, so many pieces !
Thanks again for the update. Me to,I'm ready to hear it run.
great work
You could find a pair of trim rings, sand blast em and paint em silver to match.
Also I sure hope you get to get her back to gather before work season sets in hard on you all
You were talking about if you were going to put the loader back on or not. You should put it on you 350 and keep the M a field tractor
hey there squatch love the videos and all the info on the farmalls great job... question for you what ever did become of the farmall 350..
I'd still paint the silver on the front rims. A lot of the 60's and early 70's Masseys used red centers on silver wheels. 1 piece rims.
I've painted Case rims silver as well. As Toby said, you can brush the aluminum paint on and it flows out and looks great. To each his own.

You're not concerned that it maybe too much red? It will be a sweet looking tractor when your finished.
Wow @squatch253 another great and informative video I’m also making progress on my wheel horse!
Are you familiar with the "I save tractors" channel? He specializes in wheelhorse tractors and replacement parts for them.
Edit: (isavetractors) channel.
MTpockets Woodenickle yes I do watch him he is also a great teacher and has a website for parts
Thanks for the good info and book name👍
Cool, every video a masterpiece
looking good there Squatch .
Silver pin-stripes for the front wheels?
Another great vid squatch..i enjoy watching 👀..hope to see ya on ricks channel tonite at some point ..thumbs up 👍 and of course minty👌

those 3 unpainted idems can be painted with the next batck or the 4th . still got cast wheel centers
New rims look good. You can spray that Rust-Oleum aluminum no problem. Just keep in mind when spraying it can appear brighter than your brushed application. Did you use a foam brush? That's the only way I can apply it streak free.

Between the box on the bench and those seat parts, I’d say he’s going for a late SM/ Hundred series seat and battery box.
If you use a cotton ball you could stripe the wheel in the flange area
How bout a little silver pinstripe on the front rims
How about pin striping those front rims if you want the silver on em.? You can get the little camel hair brushes and run a stripe around it.
Time to break out the felt lined sockets in assembly to preserve that fine paint job
I got an eye twitch when you said you ran out of paint and those few parts were left in primer...... didn't last long though....
Hey
IHC just miss emailed me, they are looking for restoration people. 😉😉😉
Great job as normal from you and SR.😃😎😎😎🥳💯💯💯💯👏👏👏👏👌

"Decalomania", wow, I haven't heard that word before
Awesome job 👏
So the engine had a knock that sr was gonna fix😂
Im afraid it turnd out in overkill
Let's hope it doesn't keep knocking when they get it started again :-)
I've always thought that was called "While I'm at it ,,, "
Project creep!

Nice work on the M! Where did you purchase the rims? I need new tires for my H and like your idea of replacing the rims at the same time.
did you sandblast before paint? or wire wheel ? im just finishing up a W4 and used the caseIH paint little expensive but im happy with it

I like to dismount the tire and paint the rim...save paper and tape
Simples! WhiteWall tyres on the front :-).
(That wasn't an eyelid I saw twitch there was it :-))).
You could find some IH rear wheel weights for it
Would love to see time lapse video of any thing you do
Are you going to bring the super M to Lakehead harvest reunion 2021
On them front tires why can you mask of the center hub section and silver paint the rim section.
Great job Squatch, I paint the silver on the same way, where did you fine the IH book? they are like Gold, thanks for making all of these videos they too are like Gold.

Are you also going to re-fab the whole loader assembly
do you have a shedded spot for that machine once it will be finished?
Let's start a campaign to get them to name the Super M.
Have either of you fired the engine on the M to see if its knock has been knocked out
My humble opinion is it wouldn't cost much to switch the front hubs out to Red Cast Iron Centers, get new rims and paint the rims silver.
So if senior is pimping his ride, I will say adding armrest to the seat. ?
Or making the seat more cushy comfortable and possibly spring Ride. I don't know I'm just guessing. Lol
