The space bee episode is the one and only "It was all a dream" reveals that does not piss off the viewer. Usually such plots are handled as extremely outlandish BS going on that makes no sense, only explained by "it was a dream none of that happened!" Instead, a lot of it did happen but Leela perceived it differently. Which is why when they revealed that twist instead of leela just going bananas i cried rather than yelled "Oh are you ****ing kidding me!?" at the end.

What I love about the Why of Fry is that both Nibbler and Fry are correct. One life compared to billions of lives is a pretty easy choice to make, but that one person would have a right to be upset
Just because I'm currently an emotional wreck that recently rewatched Futurama again with my fiancee, I want to say that the show not only had heart but the most realistic understanding of emotion and tragedy. I say this as someone who lost his brother prematurely several years ago and I can't help but cry with Luck of the Fryrish. Life goes on and it can go on pretty normally as shown with the flashbacks throughout the episode but the ending with Yancy talking about how he misses his brother everyday despite the world still moving and framing the drawing Fry made reminds me of how I kept all the comics my brother drew as a kid and how I have his favorite stuffed animal on the mantle above the TV of the new home my fiancee and I bought. And on the other side, this is the first look at Fry's past that he was always portrayed as happy leaving behind and showing it wasn't as bad as perception made it, which I can understand as well as someone who lived with depression his whole life and never felt I fit in with even my own family until looking at the games my brother and I created and played. I love you, Tyler, and I miss you everyday
27:29 Idk if I'd consider that to be homophobia, the main joke is that Fry doesn't want his "grandpa" to be gay, because that would mean that he wouldn't exist
I actually agree with you about that episode, but for a very short clip that visually aids what I was saying, I think my editor made a smart choice haha
I was about to make the exact same argument just to get it out there but was worried nobody would read it. It's good to see that Johnny already read my comment 6 months before I wrote it and even agrees!
@@Johnny2Cellos Wrong. Your editor did not make a smart choice to side you with Twitter. Especially if you own the fact here that it wasnt "homophobic" it was adding backing to Frys desire to exist, a focal plot point of the episode. I grew up with Futurama as a whole, and am Pansexual. I never took any offence to anything, including the supposed "liking men bad" 3 second gag with Frys grandfather thing you showcased. I am also Native American and never got upset about the Martians. You need to stop being so sensitive, if you like a dated piece of television like Futurama, especially the older version of it, you need to learn to keep your modern sensibilities checked at the door. Or do you want more episodes like the Eyephone and Susan Boil thing? As a member of the LGBTQ, please stop getting offended for us, let US make that distinction. Taking a SJW stance just depowers the people that have the right to get offended. If I can use Monty Python as a stance for a lot of my inspiration for acting and comedy as a whole without being offended, you can like Futurama without going full "this joke bad". Notifications are off on this one, I want you to learn from this comment, not here to debate an SJW.
To this day, I see a single still image of Seymour and I tear up. By about ten minutes into this video, my vision was blurry from all the water. It just hits the emotional strings. So. Damn. Well.
I seriously can’t agree more those 4 seasons I loved way more than the Simpsons even before the movies were even brought up. Please do the Comedy Central years as I watch all of the series again. Thank you
We're whalers on the moon. She was like I never knew astronauts were so fat and Fry was like he's not an astronaut and he was just using space travel as a metaphor for beating his wife.
Bro I'm a 30 year old man and i'm tearing up talking about some of these episodes, so emotional, such an absolutely beautiful journey. Thanks for this, man, this is my favorite show ever along with KOTH.
It was truly the golden era of futurama those first 4 seasons, I feel like the next ones never really regained that peak in seasons as a whole, just some gem episodes here and there, but those seasons will stay with me forever haha
I never knew Phil Hartman was supposed to be Zapp, but now that I do all I can think of is how perfect he would have been! Such a tragic loss of comedy and talent ripped away from this world far too soon. 😔
21:19 As a Navajo myself, come on dude, chill. You say "Where the Buggalo Roam" is offensive, lazy, and not that funny, but to my sensibilities it was one of the funniest episodes, and I was never offended at all. You wouldn't believe the humor we natives play out at our own expense, and that includes making fun of native stereotypes. I don't know why people think natives are so sensitive. Oppressed and historically abused, sure. Impoverished to third-world levels, absolutely. But don't white-knight us just because you never talked to an actual native to figure out what depictions we find offensive. Futurama created a meaningful allegory with the Native Martians, the buggalo, the "bead," the Wongs, and their casinos. Amy even returns ownership of one of her parents' casinos to the Martians in the episode "Viva Mars Vegas." It was a well-intentioned but misguided gesture from Amy, and the Martians express as much in the episode, but that's how the relationship has always been between Native Americans and people of European descent. Meanwhile, you call the writing in "Buggalo" offensive, presumably because (1) you assume natives find it problematic, and (2) pointing it out is a gesture of what you believe is good faith. But to my eyes, it's another misguided gesture. To be clear, I'm a big fan of your video essays, Johnny, including this one. Don't change. I'm not trying to make you feel bad, but there are just so few natives out there to set the record straight, and you deserve to hear it.
I appreciate you conveying your feelings and perspective, but I absolutely do not appreciate the assumptions about my own intentions and actions. My perspective on this literally stems from talking to or listening to native people I know here in my industry, writing/media/tv/production, and the issues they have with problematic portrayals of natives in media. It's an issue I hear about a lot because I work in media. As I'm sure you know, groups of people are not a monolith, so while this might be how you as a native feel about these portrayals, I'm sure you would also acknowledge that it isn't how everyone feels, and it's weird to tell me that I'm making assumptions while you, in turn, are making assumptions. Nowhere in my video did I speak FOR natives, I was not offended on their behalf, I cited what I felt to be problematic portrayals based on my own research and experience. You are absolutely allowed to feel differently, but please don't make these kinds of public assumptions about my intentions or my life.
@@Johnny2Cellos : Agreed. I made assumptions about your intentions, and I ought not to have. However, call me uncreative, but there aren't a whole lot of other conclusions for me to draw when you call the episode offensive without specifying why and to whom. What exactly about "Where the Buggalo Roam" was offensive/problematic, and to whom? I wouldn't have commented if you addressed those bits, even if I disagreed. Your point that cultural groups are not monoliths is well received, and indeed appreciated. That said, I've been steeped in this population my whole life, and the people around me get offended not by bad representation, but by the removal of agency that we experience when outside groups tell us what we supposedly think -- like how the word "Indian" is somehow offensive, despite essentially all of us embracing it with pride. Your goal was never to dictate the feelings of others, obviously. I just want to convey that, from my perspective, I get triggered when non-natives tell me what is and isn't good representation. I acknowledge that natives are frequently portrayed as caricatures, almost as if they're extinct. But not every caricature is offensive. That only happens when the caricature diminishes what/whom it's portraying, and I just don't see that in Futurama. To the contrary, I enjoy the inclusiveness. After all, were Italians offended by the Cygnoids in "A Leela of Her Own"? Did Indians (from India) find the Antarians in "Attack of the Killer App" problematic? Maybe, though I doubt it. But I could be wrong! That's why I'm asking what you found problematic about the episode. I'm not discounting the issues held by the natives you've worked with. Natives get a raw deal in most media, but what was it in Futurama? I'm willing to bet there's a video essay premise in here somewhere. Lastly, I want to reiterate, because it's so easy to succumb to the toxicity of internet anonymity, that I'm a fan, and I respect you, Johnny.
I hear you, and again I appreciate your perspective greatly. I didn't want to dwell too much on the negative in an already very long video, and I did discuss this episode and its representation on my podcast. Here's what I felt came off as harmful in my eyes. The episode obviously uses the Native Martians as a parallel to Native Americans, only on Mars, with the Wongs having seemingly scammed them out of their land. Again another parallel to native displacement in the US. But in the end, the solution is basically that the Native Martians learn that they had actually been traded an incredibly valuable diamond, and not been scammed out of their land at all. From my POV, this solution is what creates the problems, because it implies that A) The natives were not intelligent enough to realize that they had received something actually valuable in the trade, and B) That they were never actually wronged, they had gotten a fair deal for their land Which I think, if you transpose back to its origins as a Native American parallel, is a problematic solution in the episode. Obviously the use of stereotypes themselves can be debated, and not everyone is going to find them harmful. I do think that media, when portraying natives, should make more of an effort to cast native actors in these roles. They clearly just used Billy West and other on staff VAs to play the natives, where as a show like King of the Hill has always had a Native American actor playing John Redcorn. This isn't necessarily a stereotype issue obviously, but more of a representation issue
@@Johnny2Cellos : I respect that interpretation. It's more well thought out than mine, and it holds up to deeper scrutiny. After further consideration, my personal suggestion would be, in future, to use the word "problematic" and not "offensive." The latter implies, however unintentionally, that it's your issue to get offended about. The former, "problematic," is something you can easily back up with concise reasoning, as you've just done. If nothing else, it'll spare you the ire of pedants like myself. Have a good one, sir~
I have rewatched this series countless times and still find things that I find funny and still see each episode in a new way every time I rewatch them, it’s honestly one of the greatest animated shows that has been created
You did justice to this golden age and I'm completely onboard with how you approached it. Thanks for making me weep yet again while reminiscing of a cartoon from 20 years ago.
When I’m on Disney plus the way the episodes are grouped in terms of seasons is very different to how it’s grouped on Wikipedia: it’s very inconvenient when I try and search for a particular episode
even as as a Die-Hard Simpsons fan I've always have a soft spot for Futurama and always LOVED Futurama even from the FOX Era to the straight to DVD Movies to the Comedy Central revival it always made me laugh from it's sci-fyi adventures and characters
I'm glad that someone else thinks "the Sting" is their favorite episode. It's always been my favorite, and it's often overlooked in favor of other episodes. I like the psychological horror and dread that the story keeps you in. You know everything will all be back to normal by the end, and there's that great fake out. Plus, this had Leela at her most vulnerable, which highlights the tension of the events.
I never noticed until my most recent rewatch that you can literally see Nibbler's shadow under the desk in the fucking pilot. I always thought they added in the fact that Fry was "sent" to the future retroactively.
One of my favorite things about Futurama is the naming conventions for episodes. As weird as that may sound. Like, "How Hermes Requisitioned His Groove Back"? Genius. And they're all just perfect
In my opinion all of Futurama is a golden era. The pre movie era has the most memorable quotes like “If we hit that bullseye the rest of the dominos I’ll fall like a house of cards. Checkmate!” “Aren’t we going after your gargoyle?” “My Whaaaaa” “With me every missions a suicide mission” “Lower, lower, lower, lower, lower, TOO LOW!… Lower” “Whilst you’re under the knife you can get an ink pouch to spray on your enemies to escape” “That’s the stupidest idea I’ve ever heard” “Whoop whoop whoop whoop whoop whoop whoop” And the most famous fan created one. Why not zoidberg.
I'd love to hear you talk about your favorite guest appearances throughout Futurama (like, to use my two favorites as examples, Bea Arthur as the Femputer or Sigourney Weaver as the Planet Express Ship)
The first four seasons of Futurama will always be special to me. My brothers and I watched it as we were kids, but we watched it on DVD as we didn't really know where it was airing and at what time. We still quote it every now and then.
I think my biggest gripe with this show is that later on they think bender was more funny than he actually was. Sure he's a jerk but they never really stop and becomes a drag for a bit. Other than that the show is just amazing
Godfellas is the first episode I saw where I was genuinely in awe by the end. A lot of episodes prior had made me emotional, and cry and whatnot. but Godfellas just means so much to me.

When you watch it and really pay attention its amazing how good this show is.. but it made me sad as well because now i watch it alone.... I miss watching it with my family back in the Day.... My dog was put down last year, and I made a decision at that point that I wasn't going to watch Futurama for a long time until I felt enough time had passed, all because of that goddamn episode. But I have to say, this video along with your other Futurama content is really making me miss it. I'm tempted to break the hiatus after my current binge.
For me Futurama is one of those rare shows that was great it's entire run. It's final finale was perfect and I wouldn't want any more of the show because I think it ended on the perfect note. I'm glad it didn't run for countless seasons and lose its charm like the Simpsons. So while the first few seasons may be the golden era to some, the entire series feels like that to me
I definitely want this trilogy of videos to be completed. I mean it's already 2/3 done! It's only natural to go on with it. Love the Futurama-themed episodes, I bingewatched them all! Great video as always!

@@Johnny2Cellos Ouch. On the other video you posted, what the hell do you mean "But not before the damage has already been done?!"

This video made me cry like 5 times which is just a testament to how strong the early run of this show actually was.
To this day, I see a single still image of Seymour and I tear up. By about ten minutes into this video, my vision was blurry from all the water. It just hits the emotional strings. So. Damn. Well.
As much as I love Futurama I wouldn't ever want another season. It ended perfectly
Imo, if matt groening said he would be open to bringing futurama back, its probably a good idea
Hopefully the episode Otherwise ends the show beautifully once again.
One of my favorite episodes from their first run on TV is, Roswell that ends well.
Watching the sting high on ketamine was something else
“ENJOY THE TOUR, DUDES!!”
……I’m gonna go lie down.
That part will never not be funny 🤣🤣🤣
I still get chills when the theme song starts after the episode 1 cold open
Futurama has made absolute history, one of the reasons i like it!!!
I seriously can’t agree more those 4 seasons I loved way more than the Simpsons even before the movies were even brought up. Please do the Comedy Central years as I watch all of the series again. Thank you
I just can't get over how beautiful this is.
Yeah I like Leeila's Home World to. I also like how they played the song Baby Love Child by Pizzicata 5 at the end.
The Sting is my favorite episode and I've seen it at least a dozen times but I never noticed the gift, jacket, and ice world parallels! Holy wow!
Man, Thats how you know this show is a classic, every episode you talked about put a real big smile on my face. Thanks for hyping up my morning
Bendin’ in the Wind is my favorite episode. The 3rd run is the best batch of episodes IMO
when I first saw Jurrasic Bark I had recently gotten a puppy and just watching the episode thinking about me and my dog got me all teared up
We're whalers on the moon. She was like I never knew astronauts were so fat and Fry was like he's not an astronaut and he was just using space travel as a metaphor for beating his wife.
Bang! Zoom! Straight, to the moon!
I remember the exact day this show premiered on FOX and how I waited for it to air. ❤️❤️❤️
I never knew Phil Hartman was supposed to be Zapp, but now that I do all I can think of is how perfect he would have been! Such a tragic loss of comedy and talent ripped away from this world far too soon. 😔
It's actually why (in the meta, at least) Fry's first name is Philip. They named their lead character after Phil Hartman as a tribute.
From my POV, this solution is what creates the problems, because it implies that A) The natives were not intelligent enough to realize that they had received something actually valuable in the trade, and B) That they were never actually wronged, they had gotten a fair deal for their land
Which I think, if you transpose back to its origins as a Native American parallel, is a problematic solution in the episode.
That's a good distinction and I appreciate your comment a lot!
I just watched every futurama episode and it’s weird to see how many masterpieces it has per average episodes
Can’t believe we’re a week away from this amazing show coming back again
When I’m on Disney plus the way the episodes are grouped in terms of seasons is very different to how it’s grouped on Wikipedia: it’s very inconvenient when I try and search for a particular episode
Yeah streaming generally has everything in broadcast order
Its just as awful with American dad lmao
even as as a Die-Hard Simpsons fan I've always have a soft spot for Futurama and always LOVED Futurama even from the FOX Era to the straight to DVD Movies to the Comedy Central revival it always made me laugh from it's sci-fyi adventures and characters
I love seeing creators capture exactly what they love about a series. Great job and thanks for the continued Futurama content!
I don’t think this show will ever get old for me
Dude, I swear my eyes began watering up while watching this video. Futurama really was a special show
"I wanna see how it ends." was such a perfect line to finish the series with.
Only just watching now as I had to take awhile to emotionally prepare for hearing you talk about Seymour
Rapidly becoming my favorite channel, talking about my favorite shows.
Normally I don’t like when UA-cam videos are over 20 minutes, but this was a masterpiece. Excellent work!
If you watch the pilot, there is a frame that shows a shadow that looks like Nibbler underneath the table
17:07 Did Fry call his brother a 'fink'? lmfao I was not expecting that
Dang I never noticed that. That’s only the second time I’ve heard fink used in media
Man your videos are so well edited and Your voice over is so well written. How does this channel not have millions of subscribers?
Man, that’s so nice to hear, thanks so much 🙏
I'm glad that someone else thinks "the Sting" is their favorite episode. It's always been my favorite, and it's often overlooked in favor of other episodes. I like the psychological horror and dread that the story keeps you in. You know everything will all be back to normal by the end, and there's that great fake out. Plus, this had Leela at her most vulnerable, which highlights the tension of the events.
Seen the pilot a few too many times, but still agree with how good it is. Cheers for the memories and a great analysis
I never noticed until my most recent rewatch that you can literally see Nibbler's shadow under the desk in the fucking pilot. I always thought they added in the fact that Fry was "sent" to the future retroactively.
It was added later. Dont think it was aired on tv that way
One of my favorite things about Futurama is the naming conventions for episodes. As weird as that may sound. Like, "How Hermes Requisitioned His Groove Back"? Genius. And they're all just perfect
Many many titles are brilliantly constructed
After just finishing the cartoons that curse episodes about Futurama on FOX, I appreciate this even more
In my opinion all of Futurama is a golden era. The pre movie era has the most memorable quotes like
“If we hit that bullseye the rest of the dominos I’ll fall like a house of cards. Checkmate!”
“Aren’t we going after your gargoyle?”
“My Whaaaaa”
“With me every missions a suicide mission”
“Lower, lower, lower, lower, lower, TOO LOW!… Lower”
“Whilst you’re under the knife you can get an ink pouch to spray on your enemies to escape”
“That’s the stupidest idea I’ve ever heard”
“Whoop whoop whoop whoop whoop whoop whoop”
And the most famous fan created one. Why not zoidberg.
I doubt the show was transphobic or homophobic. Rather, it was trying to protect those groups.
I'd love to hear you talk about your favorite guest appearances throughout Futurama (like, to use my two favorites as examples, Bea Arthur as the Femputer or Sigourney Weaver as the Planet Express Ship)
Videos like this make me appreciate the show so much more!
The first four seasons of Futurama will always be special to me. My brothers and I watched it as we were kids, but we watched it on DVD as we didn't really know where it was airing and at what time. We still quote it every now and then.
Unpopular opinion: Luck of the Fryish is much sadder than Jurassic Bark
this show was one of the best ending for a series ever. truly masterful
God I hate when people use the word "problematic" to describe opinions or representations they don't like. What problem is being created? Wrong think?
The Golden Era had the Top 3 tear jerkers
I think my biggest gripe with this show is that later on they think bender was more funny than he actually was. Sure he's a jerk but they never really stop and becomes a drag for a bit. Other than that the show is just amazing
Godfellas is the first episode I saw where I was genuinely in awe by the end. A lot of episodes prior had made me emotional, and cry and whatnot. but Godfellas just means so much to me.
The BiCyclops for two blew my mind when I watched an episode of Married with Children for the first time and realized the episode is also an homage for Katey Segal
The jokes about Frys grandfather potentially being gay always makes me laugh
I keep the ending of Jurassic Bark on my brain's speed dial for when I need to put on a serious face or stop myself from laughing
.... This show i loved.. Why because i watched it with my Family every time it was on... Even my dad loves this show... Idk why but last year i watched it all again because its been years and man... When you watch it and really pay attention its amazing how good this show is.. but it made me sad as well because now i watch it alone.... I miss watching it with my family back in the Day.... Laughing and eating snacks..... Damn Time really waits for nobody....
I was born on 14 March 1999, Futurama was first aired on 28 March 1999
My dog was put down last year, and I made a decision at that point that I wasn't going to watch Futurama for a long time until I felt enough time had passed, all because of that goddamn episode. But I have to say, this video along with your other Futurama content is really making me miss it. I'm tempted to break the hiatus after my current binge.
'The Sting' definitely scarred me for a few months when I first watched it. I was most likely 9 or 10 and I was anxious of everything lol
I was 9 or 10 when it premiered*
For me Futurama is one of those rare shows that was great it's entire run. It's final finale was perfect and I wouldn't want any more of the show because I think it ended on the perfect note. I'm glad it didn't run for countless seasons and lose its charm like the Simpsons. So while the first few seasons may be the golden era to some, the entire series feels like that to me
the CC seasons are underrated, but it definitely should not get revived
The Bend Her episode is a great episode since it showed what would happen in the future with transgender athletes and has been pretty spot on.
Man I still remember when that holophoner episode was the last one, I remember talking to my dad about how "they need to bring back Futurama"
I definitely want this trilogy of videos to be completed. I mean it's already 2/3 done! It's only natural to go on with it. Love the Futurama-themed episodes, I bingewatched them all! Great video as always!
Honestly I enjoyed the entire show pre and post fox as the concept of being in the future but still grounded is what made it good.
Yet another top notch video from this channel. Can't wait to see the Revival Retrospective and beyond.
I cant believe you didn't mention the married with children reference 😭
Futurama was one of those shows i was way too young to watch bit still enjoyed all the stupid entertaining stuff that came along with it.... honestly the first series finale i didnt even realize it was over
