Hello, just wanted to thank you for these instructional videos. I am in the process of preparing an AMX which has not been started in 20+ years. Your helpful insight is great and very applicable to what I am doing. Just wanted you to know that I appreciate you!
I've been wrenching on cars my whole life! I really enjoy your great videos. You make everything simplified for the novice and your straightforward approach is the best!
Thank you thank you!! Looking ay my grandfathers 74 with 32k miles. Starter works but sometimes nothing. Pulled it and found EXACTLY what this video is about.
Thanks man very helpful I just got my 74 running today thanks to this video I was able to do it my self with confidence good job brother keep them videos coming
Hey man, i recently got my dream 1979 corvette...BUT it has all kinds of issues i didnt know. Thanks to your channel now i am in the process of restoring it myself. I wish you did more on the C3 but im bias as hell. OOOH and also...the "tight like a tiger" quote had me dying!
Brother I have watched a couple of your videos now! Working on a 77 right now! Drove it into the garage and now it won't make a sound when I turn the key, so I am going to pull the starter and see if that it! Love how detailed you are! I am now a subscriber!!
Hi Tom , great video, I will definitely stay tuned , I am Polish currently living in UK . I am am relocating to Canada next year , Great car by the way , it’s the shape of it that makes it so unique.
Thanks Man. I’m trying to remove the starter in my 71 and that 8 mil inside nut is hard to get to, especially with the heat shield making it hard to get a socket on it. I may pull it like you showed.
C3 Corvettes have the battery mounted in a recessed compartment behind the passenger seat. The positive battery cable runs to the starter. GM ran the negative (ground) cable to the frame and used a separate cable up front from the frame to the engine block. It's a good idea to replace that factory ground cable with a longer one that leads directly to the block. Leave the one from the frame to the block intact. The reason for this is that a copper battery cable is a much better conductor than the steel frame. And unless you're restoring your older Corvette (or any GM) and need everything to look factory original consider replacing those old starters with a new gear reduction starter from Powermaster or Tilton. You'll avoid the GM "hot start" problem where the engine won't start until the starter has a chance to cool. Embarrassing at the gas station when other people are waiting to use the pump.
I just wanted to ad my 2 cents to some starting issues. I have a 1979 Vette that did a valve stem replacement. When I replaced the valve cover gasket , the side above the started was a little heywire, so there was some oil leakage(replaced the gasket). Car started and ran fine on that day. The next day I went out to start it, and nothing. Got gauge lights, radio, etc, but nothing too the starter. Went underneath to the starter with some carb cleaner and cleaned and sanded all the connections. There was one wire in particular that you need to look for. It comes out of the harness that the power and alternator wires are. A small black wire( I assume a ground) but it's bolted right around the lower right side of the bellhousing. Had some oil and rust. After the cleanup all around the starter, fired up like a champ! No new starter necessary.
I'm thinking my problem is in my ignition. I checked the harness on the firewall cleaned it up what it doe, I turned the key and nothing but I will have the radio. I will have lights but I have No start 15 minutes later I'll have start. I'm thinking the ignition switch itself. I have a 65 vette. What do you think. I appreciate the time.
I have a 78 anniversary edition, this was great, but i'm still chasing starting issue. I bypassed the clutch safety switch with a little jumper but still turn key...everything lights...engage the spring switch and nothing... seriously thinking rather than get to complicated..replace clutch safety with toggle...and run that 12v to a pushbutton and splice into lavender wire at harness...
Just received a 1973 stingray. Replaced battery but still no power. Looked for a kill switched but nothing found. Could it be part of the starter as well or something else? Thank you,
Honestly if you watch the Corvette c3 Series in a row you will figure it out, I had the exact same problem, you will just have to go over all the wiring, could check the safety neutral switch first. Go to playlists on my channel and watch the series in a row, good luck with your project
Hey, I know I asked you this before, but can you explain to me how to change out my ignition switch which is on the steering column. I have a telescopic steering. My question to you is can I take or replace the switch from just going underneath the dash I have small hands. Is it possible to change the switch without having to pull out the steering column?
Hey, do you have a video of changing the ignition switch that’s on the steering column on a 1977 Corvette you can post? I know it’s located on the middle of the steering column and you get to it from underneath the dash. I’m not talking about the Tumblr. I’m talking about the actual ignition switch that is mounted to the steering column underneath.
Hi there will a faulty starter cause no power to the vehicles electrical system like its a dead battery which it isn't ..i tried everything with the c3 corvette
On my 69 350 Corvette sometimes I turn the key and nothing happens. This first happened when it was in a repair shop for another issue. The mechanic jumped across the two solenoid terminals with a screwdriver and it started. He said there was a dead spot in the starter armature. Another mechanic said it was a bad solenoid. do you have an opinion? When it doesn't do this the starter performs well.
My C3 keeps on draining the battery while running, checked the alternator and alternator belts. Will check the starter this weekend. Next thing i think if this doesn’t work its to check the positive cable.
I don’t have a video on this but it’s actually pretty simple to figure it out, you need to watch a UA-cam video entitled something like. “Parasitic draw on car battery” “ car battery draining” Something like that, there’s decent videos out there that explain it, just follow the steps and you can figure it out good luck
Just got me 75 stingray, my starter isn’t working been watching this video prsying I can fix it. Who ever did the wires before hand really messed everything up like bad the wires are rando colors and patched together weirdly UHHOHH
Probably some European LOL jk After 81 all American cars went metric, I’m guessing the starter wasn’t the original, Must’ve been off of an 82. I could be wrong though About the exact transition with all models
Just got my 77 yesterday and am binging on all your videos. Hasn’t been driven since 80. Thank you for sharing all of this useful info!

My dad always used boards between jack and vehicle. He takes most of his new ones to the shop now. But always had board between. Good advice 👍

No problem 😉

Excellent Video. Do you have a video on replacing heater core in a C3 -mine is leaking in my 79?
Well I see that you already found it

No i dont
Is there any way you can do a video on that? I can’t find a video anywhere.
I'm having a no-start issue after changing a window switch. Think I hit the neutral safety switch. Rebuilt the starter. Still no start or crank at all

No, check out my 3 electrical videos on the c3

Actually he might have said on the commutator, not the armature.
Are your battery terminals clean free of corrosion and on tight?
My C3 keeps on draining the battery while running, checked the alternator and alternator belts. Will check the starter this weekend. Next thing i think if this doesn’t work its to check the positive cable.
Only when it’s running?
And also just sitting with the battery plugged in, doesn’t have to be sitting for long

Yes lol

C-3 Head light grounding goes where.
Watch the engine Harness and headlight harness videos
I believe it’s by the radiator there’s a ground there it needs to be solid
Sorry -found it!
