  • In this video you will see the complete, real-life (meaning real maintenance, not staged) removal of an original old start motor with a new replacement starter motor for a 1977 C3 Corvette with a 5.7Ltr 350cid V8 engine. This starter motor removal and replacement was done as part of a refresh, restoration of this C3 Corvette. You will see the entire process. It's not a difficult job, but could be depending on how much of the engine components you need to remove. I had previously removed the oil pan and part of the exhaust making access to the starter motor fairly simple. The C3 in this video has been jacked up about 18inches as most of the work is done from the underside and some space was required between the car and the ground in order to access the starter motor. This is a job everyone can do.

That positive red wire is dangerously close to the frame. Fireworks waiting to happen. Loosen it and move it away from that exposed metal. I personally would have had the original starter rebuilt. Shiny, new is not necessarily better. I enjoy your videos.

What you cut off is the post for the brace. You have the hot wire on that post instead of the large post on solenoid.

Thanks for your comment and I'll make the adjustments you mentioned. I still have the original starter and may rebuild it and reinstall at a later time. I really try to keep all the original parts and reuse of possible. J

Very interesting. On my c3 corvette which after many years I still did not change the starter/solenoid, I have the exact problem where the starter won't work when it is hot. I think it has to do with the mechanism won't engage with the wheel. It happened years ago leaving a rest area where a yellow line separating the road, at night was a yellow line on a midcurb separating the 2 lanes. Going slowly the car went close to this line(curb) and shook it up. It remained that way since then. I will change the starter with the rest of my project.

I do have a couple degrees in Education, but work in the field of adult learning. I try and make the videos useful so that other people can at least see what needs to be done, get entertained to a certain degree, and also add to the body of knowledge of these C3s out there. Thanks for your comments btw.
