This is the largest project I have tackled for Elden Ring. An entire year, matter of fact, an entire journey from 2019 to 2023. The perception, the bad endings, the end goodening, the expectations, reactions, trailers, the game itself, what worked, everything in one large video! Welcome to Elden Ring One Year Later.

People talk about the well being THAT moment in the game. But for me it's when you exit stormveil castle and enter liurnia of the lakes. It's just beautiful. You see the erdtree, Raya lucaria, the moon. The game just opens up at that moment and that was the moment that I knew this was something special

For me it was after I fell for the teleporter trap in the ruins by the lake in limgrave, and finally managed to escape the prawns in the tunnel. Riding all around the Lake of Rot without a clue how to escape and being incredibly underleveled, I came to fear Caelid so much that it is still my favourite area I have discovered in Elden Ring to this day.

Going up the Ruin Strewn Precipice and take the lift up to see Altus Plateau, then later realizing it was merely the back way was probably my favorite. Another was how FROM applied their looping design to the open world with the ring around Volcano Manor, where you drop down to where you started.

For me it was getting teleported to Caelid. First time I opened the map I was like wait, that's it? Then I ended up in Caelid. I struggled quite a bit to escape that dungeon but when I did, I looked at the environment and that was my "yeahhhh ok" moment. Especially after I then opened the map again, just to find out it pretty much doubled in size. That's when I knew I was in for something special

Someone that can really pull off the character depth like Kain And Raziel. Or Luke and Vader. Or Sarevok from BG2. I need my amazing story in a game that doesn't break immersion fix.

I never thought, that after 40 years of playing video games I could be drawn in as much as Elden Ring did. I still play it every single day, I have over 40 full playthroughs with all rememberance bosses, getting all great runes, and it still doesn’t dull me to repeat all the story parts, that I now know so very well. As a FromSoft noob I struggled mightily in the beginning, but got through the early hard part and after over 2.000 total hours in the game, I now even can parry Malenia and discover new builds for me to play (ever tried fist weapons?) and enjoy the variety of possible play styles. I never could imagine, once i got the Blasphemous blade, Moghs spear, Rivers of blood, that I would use other weopons, cause hey, why make the game harder on yourself, but these weapons are now well storedin the inventory and I have so many more to really make full of use of. I‘m so excited that FromSoft didn’t exploit the players wallet and even gifted use the PvP arenas for free and with the DLC probably not too far away, I‘m hyped for what comes next, how they are gonna tie the story together and the sufferings the new bosses will bring to us. Summed up: For me the best game ever, no mind change possible.

I wish Tanimura would be lead director for a Souls game again. I don't doubt that Lake of Rot was Tanimura's creation and the linear obvious easy path through it was Miyazaki stepping in to avoid another public backlash like with the Frigid Outskirts.

The world itself was really the showstopper in ER...IMO in ER2, they need to focus more on the combat as it really did feel like DS3 with jump and a horse. Flesh out jump attacks and mounted combat. They have a great base to work from. Also, innovate more in normal combat. I think we are years away from ER2 but I really hope it's not just Elden Ring but in a new world(that ironically WOULD be very Ubisoft to do)

I still think ER is the best game ever made, in every aspect. The only open world game that I didn’t get bored of, In fact I memorized every last corner in the whole map because it’s just beautiful, I played the game and finished it dozens of times, I play with different character, different builds, different ideas to create my own fun because ER gave me the options to create it. I never played a single mod because they’re fake and feels like too much. it’s like using drugs, you start with a weak one then you get stronger and stronger until the first one you tried feels nothing, so I don’t want to ruin Elden ring for myself, I believe I will still play this game in five years from now and I don’t want to keep remembering that one weapon or that one spell from that one mod that isn’t part of the game.
Lastly, I wish they will bring Malenia and Radahn as difficult as they were before. same with weapons, like moonveil and rivers of blood back to their broken glory (i’m not talking about more damage. I want the speed, range, accuracy and all of that).

I managed to kill every boss in the world (probably not every but almost all of them yk) and it went the exact way i wanted it to. Then the day i left that night i did the final boss and oh my gosh i still remember this moment. I also love ER bosses the most in terms of their approaches, because of how much they offer in combat, their also the most complex in their moveset, the variety is crazy, and even the mini-bosses are phenomenal, bosses like Crucible knight, or Zamor's heroes are amazing and feel so fun to fight, better than like 50% of past soulsborne bosses, and the main bosses are so distinct, from both theme, music, spectacle and it just feels refreshing to fight each one of them, and based on how much build options you have, It just gives you more.

The boss fights of this game are actually my favorite in the series despite the criticisms you mentioned. I understand that balance in the 3rd act of the game is bad, I have a problem with that too, but one thing I don't like more is the duo fights. I'm fine with bosses repeating when it's convenient (ex. Erdtree avatar guarding every tree), but the ones that serve basically no purpose should've been replaced with an entirely new boss. I also feel like the game suffered from some of it's balancing patches. I think Radahn should've never been nerfed, and even more so I think he should've set a bar for the scaling by making Caelid a late game area. But you're able to get there so easily and can already fight Radahn as early as... well, as soon as meet Blaidd or Ranni. If you made it so, Radahn could be your first great rune boss. If they had a way to lock Caelid behind something like the lift for Altus Plateau, less people would've got their ass kicked that early. So yea, this all being said, they shouldn't have nerfed Radahn, but he should've been a transition from the second to the third act. That way third act bosses would've felt more balanced, and going through Caelid for the first time will get you ready for bosses like Maliketh and Malenia.
But it is what it is in the end. The Radahn Festival is still a really fun thing to do, and he can still definitely one shot you if you haven't leveled vigor. He's still a pretty fun boss because of that, its just a shame remembering how good it felt overcoming his challenge.
I kinda just turned this into a Radahn rant, but to speak on more bosses, Godrick was my favorite early game boss specifically because of his delayed attacks and his design. You learn from Margit how telegraphing will go, and even though it makes Godrick easier by comparison, he still has some really good patterns that I find fun to learn.
My favorite midgame boss is Morgott. I could say it's because I defeated him my first try on my first playthrough in a really badass way (we hit each other at the same time and both fell, but obviously, only one of us came back), but it's more than that. Once again, his moveset is very fun to learn and he's quite a well designed boss. His second phase adds so much to the fight, and everything about it is familiar, because it's like a beefed up Margit (who is a beautiful first boss, may I add). And for the late game, my favorite boss is Malenia. I hated her on my first playthrough and thought anybody who would like a boss like that is cynical. Absolutely crazy. Then, I got good. Got better, I should say. Even now, I'm able to defeat her without summoning.
And I could fight these bosses, and more, a million times. I don't see the problem where other people do (besides the balancing of the third act; it really is like a jumpscare). My genuine main problems stem from connectivity and PVP (as well as duo fights, but I covered that). Connectivity, as in how the game connects each area, which has to do earlier with what I said about Caelid. It also has to do with the hub. I'm talking about the Roundtable Hold. It's just like Dark Souls 3's Firelink Shrine. It should've been an actual area you could travel back and forth to instead of an area you can teleport to. It makes you feel too safe, especially with that that (almost) no one can hurt you there. It also feels anti-exploration in the sense that you can get a majority of things there that you would normally work your ass off collecting. On top of it not being connected to the rest of the game world, so you cant really look at an area and think about going there unless you're already in the thick of it all. Idk. I just think it's kinda boring to make the Hold this place far and out of the way.
As for the PVP, this is probably the worst we've had from FromSoft in years. First things first, they really should've learned from complaints and made the co-op experience better and more like how the co-op mod does it. Back to PVP, the balancing is atrocious. I know they nerfed RoB, but there are still a lot of builds in this game. Sometimes those builds one shot you in the most shitty way possible, or ultimately stun lock you until you die. But that's all I really have to say about it.
Honestly, all in all, I really feel like people now are making Elden Ring worse than they remember in their minds without even such as giving it a replay and seeing if something is as bad as they remember. That's why I recently started replaying the game. And guess what? I still love it. On a new character, and I'm enjoying exploring the world again. Plus, its been long enough that I don't remember where everything is, and I will go back and suck at some of the bosses because it's been so long. So basically, in conclusion, Elden Ring is still basically the perfect FromSoft game in my eyes, and I can hardly go back to previous games because I'm spoiled by just how much they've added and improved on pretty much everything. Despite my very few problems with the game, there's so much more I like about it, and the fact that we can all sit here and name things we don't like without even saying the things we do like is kind of a shame. Put the whole picture together. Realize that this game is still amazing. Remember what it felt like beating it the first time, then go back and try it again.

I think it should also be mentioned that one of the aspects that really made Elden Ring stand out above every other open world game (except BOTW for similar reasons) was that it didn't hold your hand and give you 50+ tutorials you had to finish before you could enjoy the game. It let you discover everything on your own, from the story to the gameplay. It is also a nearly truly open world that is fully available to explore, there are only 2 areas that require you to beat a boss to access.

I had hoped so badly that Breath of the Wild would influence other open world games going forward after 2017. I just didn't know that Fromsoftware which had become one of my favorite game devs ever would literally take the best parts of BotW and fuse it with Dark Souls. It basically combined both of my favorite games of all time into something I didn't even think could have existed

Exactly, they want to harshly punish the old outdated ways of the Souls veterans because in DS3 especially, you could fight any boss by just literally rolling and R1 everything to pieces, you just ha to worry about the timing to roll, now you have to worry about positioning & extreme combo flow-charts that the bosses can deal.

I will never be able to agree with the game's end game being unbalanced or too hard. I did notice a damage increase of enemies towards the end game, but never felt it was too much or unfair, it felt fitting. In general I found Elden Ring's boss and enemy balancing to be pretty good for an open world game. And it's one of my absolute favorite fromsoft games when it comes to boss battles.

    • @PositronCannon

Same, I feel like that criticism comes from people being underleveled, not leveling Vigor enough or ignoring defense stats which contrary to popular belief actually do matter. Hell, on my first playthrough I didn't even learn to fight half the bosses properly and just stumbled my way through them, if the endgame really was as brutal as some people say that wouldn't have been possible. Malenia aside, NG+ cycles is where I actually had to start learning the fights to get through them.
I do still think they went a bit overboard with the movesets and combo chaining on some bosses, and that was my main criticism of the game on my first run, but you eventually learn how to handle it and the game is actually forgiving enough to the point where it still feels balanced for the most part. I'd say only Maliketh is really a problem in terms of crazy damage output.

    • @Skippy2603
      @Skippy2603 9 місяців тому +1

I think that if I had to level any criticism towards Elden Ring, it would not be that the game's bosses are poorly designed, nor that the endgame is unbalanced - instead, my main issue is that the game fails to teach you how to overcome those challenged (Lemme preface by saying Elden Ring is one of my favourite games ever, and I love nearly every fight that features in it) - Elden Ring boss design, for example, rewards good positioning and posture-breaking massively, but the various open-world side bosses, lack of posture bar and so on do absolutely nothing to point the player in that direction - so many of the complaints I see levied at late-game bosses stem from the fact that Elden Ring reinforces the wrong habits, and then players aren't equipped to handle late-game.
In hindsight, I love bosses like Maliketh and Malenia because I've learned how to beat them, but I think the game is unintuitive when it comes to the 'intended' means of play. @@PositronCannon

    • @enman009
      @enman009 9 місяців тому +3

Yeah, even DJ Peach and Noah Cardwell said it in their reviews: the endgame is not an impossible challenge like most makes it out to be; the game gives you all the means necessary to survive and keep up. In fact, you can get so many runes that you could easily get up to rl 170 without grind.
I do agree that there's some questionable instances that makes some encounters tedious, but you can tackle those in many ways to not feel tedious, so it's not as bad as DS2.

@@Skippy2603 no offense, and alot of what im going to say isnt necessarily pointed at you personally, but this sounds like a regurgitation of the youtuber's feeble kings arguments against the games design, by your logic non of the games actually teach you how to beat bosses except sekiro, you either do or you dont beat elden souls, its a trial and error process and its always been as simple as that, whether you discover the mechanics that allow you to beat the game is up to the player. problem is alot of fragile souls vets thought that its just bb/ds3 boss design and stuck to that logic while getting destroyed throughout the game, not the games fault, this is just souls veteran error and ego.
"for example, rewards good positioning and posture-breaking massively, but the various open-world side bosses" all the bosses, including the open world ones, reward that, and the game isnt about telling you how to defeat bosses, a posture system isnt really needed and wont make fighting the bosses any easier anyway, the same complaints by fragile souls vets about bosses never stop attacking and have too many combos will remain with or without it, but this is subjective and some ppl need the posture system to be visible, personally the hundres of smaller enemies before margit that stagger in 2 or 3 hits are enough of a lesson about posture imo.
" I see levied at late-game bosses stem from the fact that Elden Ring reinforces the wrong habits, and then players aren't equipped to handle late-game." this is only from some souls veterans that didnt get this games combat cuz they thought it was darkborne 4, it never reinforces the wrong habbits, souls vets just did that to themselves and blamed the game for it.
" I love bosses like Maliketh and Malenia because I've learned how to beat them, but I think the game is unintuitive when it comes to the 'intended' means of play" none of the games are intuitive when it comes to beating their bosses, and those statement especially applies well with souls vets, playing bb like its ds1 will make you lose, playing ds1 like ds3 will fuck you up, playing ER like its ds3 will fuck you up, and alot of souls vets hate certain games cuz they didnt realize each game is played slightly differently and have their own "clicks" so to speak, i remember alot of complaints levied at ds3 when it first came out because it "had bb bosses but were playing the dark souls character" same with sekiro where alot of players played it like souls and got destroyed in the process. its always been and always will be a player error. ER just gets the most BS because its the most successful and talked about of the games by a gigantic margin, and that invites alot of empty critique and click bait, im not saying the game is perfect though, i have series of complaints about the game myself but overall i think its easily the best fromsoft game and one of the best games of all time.

@@PositronCannon"I do still think they went a bit overboard with the movesets and combo chaining on some bosses" disagreed immensely, to me thats what puts ERs bosses above the static bosses of the older games, where u just dodge till they stop attacking, throw in an R1 or maybe 2 then back off, that design was getting stale and predictable, ER feels like the true evolution of DS/bb boss design, after ER fighting most of the older games bosses just feels kinda stale and almost boring, they are no where near as dynamic as ER bosses, where they incentivize dodge direction and positioning and using attacks that arent just R1 for 40 hours. even bb and its trick weapons felt boring after ER and its attack options, from dual wielding with an AOW on each weapon or 2 handing, to light/heavy jump attacking and charged R2s, all of which feeds in to the posture system, bb does incentivize using attacks that arent R1 but nowhere near as well as ER does. you can easily manage to finish bb with just R1, while in ER it just gets much harder if thats the only attack you use.
frankly the only games that scratch my combat itch now are ER and sekiro, the rest i got back to from time to time and play a few hours out of nostalgia or boredom, but ofcourse to each there own.

No way in hell Elden Ring has the weakest boss line up. All of the major bosses in ER except the foreskin duo are very good to exceptional. Even some minor bosses like the crucible knights, leonine misbegotten, Zamor heroes, etc. are better than most bosses in DS1, DS2 and DeS. Even Sekiro, Bloodbourne and DS3 had a run for their money. Only when you also count all the "bosses" in the mini dungeons, ER does have the worst bad/good bosses ratio. But that's to be expected as the game is much much bigger.
Edit: The gank fights are all ass. I have to admit that
