- Kawau Island is one of the largest islands in the Hauraki Gulf, located north of Auckland. It's a peaceful and quiet island, great for a day trip.
To get there we took a boat ride from Sandspit Wharf (near Warkworth) which is about an hour's drive from Auckland city. We bought our tickets in the morning from the ticket office there.
The boat ride is about an hour including a few stops around the island as we were on the royal mail run so mail was getting delivered to locals along the way.
We did the Mansion House Cruise and hopped off at Mansion House Bay which is where we also got picked up back from.

There's a small entry fee of $4 per adult if you want to look inside Mansion House, but just be sure to check their opening hours before visiting so you can best plan your timing:

Although there is accommodation on Kawau Island itself, we booked an Airbnb which was a private cabin in peaceful Paparoa. The place is set in a tranquil garden with beautiful willow trees in rural NZ. Our host Kathy was very warm, welcoming and friendly. The cabin is separated from her main home and has its own parking spot too.

very small airbnb - but just good for travellers like ourselves :D we dig the minimalistic mode! free loaf of bread and butter! bbq! BYO!
Definitely perfect for travelers especially since the accommodation was right in between our two destinations 👌
Hey Peter and Yen!! So cool to see you checking out Kawau Island! $41/person isn't too bad. $3700 lbs to purchase that island... that's crazy!! LOLOL Your Nachos look great Peter and the Peacocks want to pick up any of the bits that drop on the floor LOLOL!! You could not pay us to get on those stilts!! The Mansion was really beautiful to see. $4 entry is great and good to know to do it first or else it may be closed.
😂 those stilts were way more challenging than they look. Yen did good on them though I was unable to crack that code though 😅
It does have a nice relaxing vibe - beautiful building and then the peacocks out chilling
At one point we were waiting for the ferry by the water and sitting there with yen was just one of those super peaceful moments

Hahaha yen tends to sleep really late when she's editing like 3 or 4am isn't uncommon for her cos she likes that time of very quiet night but last night we both slept late since we were out the entire day with friends we hadn't seen in a long time and ended up playing pool to finish the night off 😁 but yea since we were out all day and night wanted to still reply as many messages as we could from the day hence the late night reply hahaha ✌️ hope you're enjoying the long weekend too!

Was wondering what kind of food would be on the island... was about to say whaaaa if there was Asian food. In 1984 i killed a wallaby on kawau by throwing a rock from about 30 metres away. We were in the bush. It alarmed and saddened my father but he was at the same time impressed with my accuracy.
It was a different time.
We owned 20 acres of beachfront land on buckletons bay just across from kawau. We sold it for about 250k in 1990. Today it would be worth about 10 million dollars.
