I served 10 active years roughly give or take a few months on two different coasts on three different ships and absolutely do not regret a second of it despite the trouble i managed to get my dumbass into! I had a blast in the '80s all over the world! You can't put a price on that!!!!!! 😎👍
I am reminded of the PBS series "Carrier" where a PBS film crew was allowed unfettered access on the USS Nimitz deployed from Bremerton, WA to the Middle East via Hawaii, Japan, Singapore, the roaring 40's in the eastern Indian Ocean. 5,400 souls with the average age of 19. One sailor remarked the Nimitz was one gigantic floating high school.
Running on a treadmill in the helo hanger as the shipped rocked was challenging since it was position facing the port side. Uphill, downhill, uphill every few second. The ones in the weight room faced forward, so just staying in the middle of the treadmill was a challenge. I miss being on a cruiser... had a blast!
Found that even a month long underway running on the treadmill daily drastically increased my overall mile time when we pulled back into port, that or it was the amount of ladder wells I ran up and down. The rocking of the ship made it exciting to workout on.
Consider serving on the the USS Blue Ridge. Big Blue is home ported in YOKOSUKA, Japan, hits many Far East ports, and is the 7th fleet flagship. You want to travel... it's the USS Blue Ridge for sure!
Hi there, thank you for reaching out. An Enlisted Sailor in the Navy might be deployed all across the world and have a variety of work environments including ships, submarines, aircraft carriers or on shore. It truly depends on your job or "rate" and the need for your specific skill set in a certain place.
I was on uss oklahoma city 1977 1979 the blue ridge took it place in 1979. In my 2 years on board I travel all ver Asia and also Australia. I spent 20 years in the navy on 6 ships most of it overseas have a lot good memories.
I've been mulling over the idea of being an officer in a military branch for a few years now, off and on. Someone who was in the Navy recommended it to me, though I didn't think life on a ship would be fun, nor am I a big fan of swimming... but lately I've come around and found this video, which seems to debunk my misperception of "getting no sunlight, trapped indoors on a ship". The Navy seems to have positions in civil engineering and certainly many with GIS and geographics... I can speak Spanish and Portuguese but I'm rusty. The US Navy really looks like an INCREDIBLE place to be, see the world, do something honorable and meaningful. I'm really struggling post-college in a career path; all jobs just sound annoying and sucky to me. If someone's going to boss me around, I want them to own it and have honor, like a superior officer would in the military. I want to be part of a workplace that is a lifestyle and sees the human dignity in those around them. I may just reach out to a Navy recruiter soon, I just don't want to do so and then shy away and have them give up on me. I just really want to be part of a culture that respects me, my skills, and my dignity.
I really wanna enlist in the navy and become a corpseman and travel but I have motion sickness and I don’t know if it would be smart to enlist with that ☹️. I’m gonna enlist in the army to become a combat medic but I always look back at navy videos and think what it would be like to be part of it.
@@Sparximus3 ? They’re paying bonuses now for advanced medical fields because of the severe lack of people in advanced technical fields, maybe things were different a year ago? But they’re literally asking for corpsman in advanced fields now, at least according to the navy website
I'm nervous for life at sea. I just started A school (not technically, I have ATT) and I feel like I'm not really in this lifestyle yet. I feel like I'm just this close to messing up or that I never have my facts right. Indocs sucks
Depending on where you're stationed is different. I was in San Diego, the barracks I was in were 4 people to a common area, split into 2 different actual bedrooms. 2 people to a shower, but 4 people to a common area for the living room, kitchen, refrigerator, washer & dryer.
How are you able to do schooling on the boat? Is internet accessible or is the program prepared and ready by the navy to do offline? Would love to be able to dive into education oike that
You get to request to be on a destroyer but whether you are on a destroyer or not is up to the Navy in the end. I asked to be on a carrier and to go to Japan now I’m on a destroyer in San Diego
I was an EW from 1985 - 1989. When I was at the end of my A school, they posted the list of orders corresponding to the number of people in my class. We got to choose from among the selection based on class ranking. I was first so chose the battleship USS Missouri. I'm not sure if other schools did it the same way or if that's how it's done now though.
I always describe my time in with a quote from A Tale of Two Cities: It was the best of times. it was the worst if times. 😉 I literally traveled around the world and visited many countries and peoples, but I also delt with a lot of stress while in the Persion Gulf during the Iran/Iraq war (Operation Earnest Will).
Whether or not it's fun it's totally up to you, your attitude, your command, and your location. A command can suck and bring you down hard! You might think Florida is for you and then find out it's not! You might get stuck in Norfolk Virginia and end up loving it! But the common denominator and those scenarios is your attitude, what can you do to make it better? 😎👍
From one Isaiah to another, you need to live your own life out from underneath some else's shadow and expectations. If they truly love you & want you to succeed they will support your choice in due time. Contact your local recruiter. Best wishes
I'm writing a novel with a huge navy ship. I have some questions about said type of ship and other things and actions involved (within the plot), if anyone's interested in discussing.

When I was in I was with helicopter squadrons we would work 12 on 12 off and we never had much time to do anything else especially your 12 on ended up being more like a 16 hour shift we would show up 2 hours early for our shift and in the morning couldn’t leave till the helicopters where launched and day shift had breakfast so basically I would miss super and breakfast and the only meal we would eat was mid rats. But if I could do it again at my age I’d do it in a heartbeat we would leave 28 individuals and come back to the squadron a family and where closer than close. Even today we are still close and I’ve been out almost 23 years.

No gyms, no emails, no karaoke night, no ice cream socials. But we did have swim calls a couple of times. Got chased out of the water once by a shark.
