  • The Fenayrou Case - A French Murder Tale
News of the Times Episode 344 | 1882
1882 France and the Fenayrou marriage has been disintegrating. Filled with infidelities, gambling, and fraud. Facing financial ruin, the wife confesses her infidelities which includes their now successful previous apprentice. The news sends the husband into an absolute fury.
This case was THE topic of discussion in France at the time. It had it all: love affairs, a crime of passion and a horrific murder including the sewing of the lips together of the corpse to stop it from floating.
We take a look at the background, the crime, the outcome and the post script in this true French crime story, The Fenayrou Case, in today’s episode of Murderous Mondays.
    Hosted by Robin Coles.

Listened to this one 3 times. Oh my goodness... On one hand, this is an old lesson to stay out of people's marriages. However, 3 against 1 and the brutality. The surprise at the second trial and the revised sentence. Riveting and excellent tale. Thanks Robin and team.

So glad you liked it!! 🙏We really liked this one and one can understand why it was the case of the year in france.! the story is so french!! Interestingly she became best mates with gabrielle - the trunk murderess who attracted a rich man, then in the middle of intimacy her partner slipped a noose around his neck and hung him. Gosh - the French really do these things quite spectacularly. 🤔😉

Wow!! This was rather a gruesome affair, wasn't it?! Fenayrou, with the assistance of his brother, really vented his rage, jealousy, vindictiveness, and frustration on Aubert, didn't he?! Mind you, Aubert's bragging about the affair must've really added petrol to the flames of Fenayrou's rage!! It's still no excuse for murder though!!
I can't believe Fenayrou literally got away with murder!!
Thanks for sharing this intriguing story, Robin!!❤💞👏👍💕

Glad you liked it! We quite liked this one and it was super famous at the time! Yes, the whole thing seems based on jealousy. We do not believe he completyely cared that she had had an affair with him - she had been having loads of affairs - we think it was because Aubert was a success and Fenayrou was not. He comes across as such a dissipated charachter - actually the pair of them. No word on the children - but that is quite usual. Possibly because the news is coming secondhand from France, there is rarely any mention of the children in the french crimes. 🤔

Interesting that the French could find a person guilty of murder with extenuating circumstances long before the British. Maria Manning was hanged for more or less the same crime as Gabrielle

Ooooh true crime buff! Very similar crimes! - quite true! There was a difference of around 40 years. The law had changed enormously within 40 years. Not quite so rigid and more open to extenuating circumstances. Although your are quite right - the English and french approaches to the law were very different! You probably already know this - it was said that Maria manning was the basis for the slightly crazy and rather intense charachter of Hortense from Dickens' Bleak House. Diickens (and we believe thackery) attended the execution of the Mannings and was apalled.
