  • The Niagara Murder - Canadian True Crime Story
News of the Times Episode 350 | 1890
In 1890, Canada was fending off what it perceived as influx of immigrants who had come only to be involved in crime.
Enter Regnald Birchall and wife, a once promising student, sports enthusiast, and sketch artist turned committed gambler and con artist.
In a previous ploy: he and his wife as Lord and Lady Somerset, ran up as many bills as they could feasibly do before they were caught, then they made good their escape.
His latest ploy: convince people of prosperous farm opportunities in Canada. Bring them over and then…what to do with them once he has extracted their money?
This story captivated both the Canadian and English press and public. In England, large rooms fitted with a telegraph were created so that paying public could listen to the latest telegrams from Canda regarding the details of the murder.
Within Canda, the whole of the town came to a standstill as people came from miles around to force their way into the courthouse to watch the drama unfold.
We look at the background, the crime, and the aftermath of the Niagara Murder in today’s episode of Frightful Fridays.
To our Canadian friends, belated Happy Canada Day!
    Hosted by Robin Coles.

Isn't it "money is the root of all evil"? He was addicted to gambling and felt he needed to feed that beast. He was, by all accounts, one of those people who could have done anything. Sad for both. Benwell's father was absolutely crushed.😢

This was a heartbreaking case about a murderous con artist. He scammed Benwell into purchasing land in Canada that he didn't even own for financial gains only along with his wife. Do you know whatever happened to Birchall wife? Why wasn't she charged as a co-conspirator? Great investigation, presentation, backstory, illustrations, photos, and videos, too. Take care 🦋

Yes, quite a con artist. And, the fact that he went back to where he had conned before just shows how very sure he was of himself. Not sure why she was not charged -she certainly knew about the con, but there was no evidence she knew about the murder. Sorry, we do not know what happened to her after - her family were certainly very supportive. Thank you, as always, for your wonderful support! Very warmly appreciated.🙌

I can imagine Reginald Birchall's father, the late Reverend Birchall, spinning in his grave at his son's murderous behaviour!! Poor Benwell!!
I wonder how much Mrs Birchall actually KNEW about the murder!! She DEFINITELY knew about the fraud!! What she saw in Reginald I don't know!! I could NEVER marry a conman!!
Thanks for yet another INTRIGUING video, Robin and team!! ❤👏👍💕💞

Thank you - we really like this story. Conmen, to be successfull, have to be charming so we sre guessing his charm may have been the attraction? Hmmm... Mrs Birchall - we agree, we think she knew about the con for sure - not sure about the murder...🤔

@@newsofthetimes She sounded a bit naive, to be honest!! Also, her father was urging her to go back to England, so I assume he didn't approve of his dodgy son-in-law!! At least he and the rest of the family supported her!!

Interesting tale, so sad for the victim's family and friends. Don't feel sorry that the killer suffered. Small price to pay for what he did.
