Mate I'm new to your channel but want to say your brilliant. I'm going to be watching all your videos and be looking forward to watching you more in future
Jason - great looking trip. I am glad the little speed wobble on the trail did not result in a sore back for you. As to your MRE, those drink mix bags are a bit of a pain. Designed to drink from so you don't mess up your cup. The MRE heaters are hit and miss if the old. The water needs to keep in contact with the heat bag, so best the roll the top down and lay it sideways. Also, a good trick is the cut the pouch open sidewise (down the long side) then your hands /spoon don't disappear into the abyss of the bag. And how can you diss the peanut butter? Put it with the blackberry jam and have a PB&J sandwich.
Yeah me too, the one time I had no trekking pole 🤦♂️I've completely given up on trying to figure out the heat pouch 😄 I'll keep hold of them and do some experimenting though. Peanut butter is not for me, hazel nuts are grand he rest... no thanks 😄
hot chocolate pudding 👍 sounds good for tomorrow. the stove looks good.. i should get one when the pocket allows. theres a different climate there to florida here an air conditioner tent would be needed 😂
I laughed a few times watching this video, especially when you fell. Couldn’t help it as I also laugh at myself when I fall. Great that you are back out again
Ah sure you have to be able to laugh at yourself and even better when someone laughs along with you. I took a chance on this hike, delighted to be back out 😁
Great video Jason. That scenery is stunning & the solitude would be brill to experience. Your back must be improving if you can climb those hills. Thanks for taking us along mate
Yeah the back is feeling strong now, just me bandy leg that I'm having to be careful with. Delighted to be back on the hills. Long may it last, cheers for joining me 👍
I love it up there. I often go up to Lough Firrib from the Wicklow gap to camp and then down to Glendalough through the miners village. Always lots of deer, probably too large a population.
Some lovely shots of lovely Glendalough Jason 🤗 Such a great spot for a hike and camp! Those cold nights will be leaving us soon no doubt 🤞 You had a lovely morning sun to greet you in the morning - great to hear the bandy leg held up 😁
My bandy leg gets sore doing very little exercise, but then I can go do a decent hike with a big pack on and have no problems. I don't understand it but I'm not complaining once I can get up into the mountains 😁
Great to see you back in the hills wild camping again Jason 😊 Love your videos, chilled and very entertaining. I've never seen anyone enjoy a chocolate pudding out of a pouch so much! 😂
Hi Jason. Lovely clear footage, and maybe even a bit of drone footage ?? You found a nice place with cracking views for pitching your tent. Gaiters are great for keeping your trousers dry but it doesn't mean you can go diving into every puddle you see 🤣. An excellent watch, and food review !. All the best 👍
Hey Andrew, yeah there was the odd drone shot in there. 😄 aye the gaiters make you feel invincible. I should have had my trekking pole with me 🤦♂️ Take her handy 🍀
Hey you do have trees in Ireland lmao im new to channel so all ive seen is rainy wet windy tundra lol . Nothing like that here in Vermont USA lol woods and mountains and the wide open fields n such are owned and farmed
A lot of our mountains were deforested hundreds of years ago. It's really only the national parks that you might see some trees on the mountains. All of the land is privately owned in ireland even our tallest mountains are owned and actively farmed. Access is granted under the goodwill of landowners
Use some hiking poles game changer takes a bit of getting used too but saves you so many times if going over . Saves you if the ground is wet and boggy or,if your tread has gone. Great vid . Shweet!
You are spot on, usually I would use one. I tried to use my mirrorless camera a lot more so I had that stuck on the end of the tripod which I had to carry. As a result I left the trekking pole tied to the backpack 🤦♂️
Great spot Jason and good to see the back up to this 💪 MRE packs used to be dead cheap but with their popularity on UA-cam outdoor channels they've gone up a lot!
@@RamblingOn it'd be a bit of a drive but anytime you want you can use one of ours and I'll show you a couple of islands you'd have to yourself. They're sit-on-top and super stable.
Nice one Jason, awesome beautiful scenery & quite ironic that U were using a ration pack in this video, as I got back from a 24hr woodland camp earlier today & had a 24hr British Ration Pack with me, which I ordered a few weeks ago... I took a gamble & got a 10pack bulk order in the end & reckon they're pretty good value considering all the things that U get in them...👍 I felt like a big kid opening a bag of presents most exciting...!🤣 Me & the dog were lucky to have a dry mild night, woke up to a nice sunrise through the trees, amongst a mass of bluebells & then decided to just stay there all day...😆 I had a Pasta Bolognese on Saturday night, an All Day Breakfast in the morning & some Indonesian Spicy Pork Rice for lunch...👍 Living the dream dude...!🙏 I'd never have imagined that I'd be out rucksacking & wild camping at 53yrs old...!🤯 Has been quite a learning curve, to survive with just the basics on my back, but ya can't beat being out in nature...✔️💯 Best wishes & tread carefully...!😂👊
Your ration pack sounds immense. They are really good considering the amount you get in them. I have the first 12 menus so I might get the other 12 when I'm done with those. The British ones sound good, did you get them on ebay? Ah yeah it's tough going on some of the hikes but it's always worth it once you get to where you are going. Hopefully we'll get some decent weather over the summer 🤞
Wow that’s an amazing location Jason 👍 What an amazing start and place to camp 👍 Weight saving gas bottle stand but able to set fire to the hillside instead 😂😂🤭 Have a great week and keep up the good work 👍😊
I saved maybe 80g by not bringing the stand but carried a 2kilo tent when I've a better one that weighs 690g 🤔😄 I don't know what I do be thinking. Have a good week 🍀
I'd go camping there! I'd bring snacks, though. Dried fruits are awesome for this: lighter weight, but keeps all nutrients. And...tasty! Chafing, eh? If you know your boots may be chafing - try using sports tape on explosed spots before setting out. It's what I did when in the army; army boots never seemed to set right. Any idea on how high above sea level you were at the highest? Also: Glendalough Saint? Now there's a song you have to be irish - and a bit into your whiskey - to understand the lyrics!
I must check out the trail food, I'll have to try out the fruit too. I dehydrate them and use them in me porridge. The tape is a great idea, still having the same issue with the right boot. Not sure why it's only the right one 🤔 the highest point was in around 700m, not sure of the exact number
Great video lad.. I appreciate you going through the misery of it all just to entertain us 😂 Hopefully your back holds out and we'll get to see more videos soon! This hike obviously wasn't perfect for you, just wondering what changes would you make with the benefit of hindsight?
No worries, happy to do it 😀 there's a few things I would do differently, I would bring snacks for the trail. Just to try keep the energy levels up because it was a decent hike. Maybe carry water to drink on the hike instead of waiting to pick it up. I should have brought a trekking pole, I only left it behind because I carried my bug camera and tripod the entire hike. If I had the pole I wouldn't have fallen the way I did and I should have brought my lanshan 1. It's a good 1.3 kg lighter than the helm and longer inside. So just a few bits 😄
Hi Jason, interested in your opinion of the folding seat you use. I suffer from a dodgy back as well and I am always in search of comfortable seating solutions.
I have to say I was sceptical at first but took the chance on it and it's been fantastic. I didn't want to use a chair, it was more a case of needing one. This gives plenty of back support and can be used inside a tent too which is brilliant. I don't think they would suit everyone so it's a case of having to take a chance on it. Here is a video I did for it ua-cam.com/video/XMmN5JOqx8Q/v-deo.htmlsi=8X7qQ0EV1SFCpJ-k
I love what you do, you have all my respect Please tell me where I can go with my family with the tent but to be safe, can you give me some locations please? like at Hidden Valley Resort, something like that I think you know the locations Thank you
There is a new place that just opened. It's called, 'CrottysLake wild camping'. They are situated 1.6km from Crottys Lake and you'll have access to the Comeragh mountain range. There's a lot of beautiful areas down there, Coumshingaun lake, Mahon falls and the Nire Valley just to mention a few. I've never been and camped at the site myself but you can find them on instagram
Wow, now that's a view! If you needed emergency medical attention do you have cell and would they have to send a helicopter or if you don't have cell do you have a Garmin inreach or something?
There's been a few occassions where I didn't have signal, I'd have to hike up out of a valley to get some. If you needed medical assistance I'd say the mountain rescue would send out the helicopter. I don't have an inreach but it is something that I'd like to get, for peace of mind more than anything else. I should really get that sorted incase I put my back out while I'm out camping, that would not be cool 😄
@RamblingOn absolutely! And it'll give your family peace of mind as well. When you fell, even a misstep can end up with a broken foot....you just never know. Not to be a Debbie downer lol.... We have an inreach mini and it's well worth it. We do the pay by the month, as you need it, plan so we can cancel over the winter months here in Canada 😊
I'll definitely be getting one and I'll be paying the monthly subscription too. Just seeing your response reminded me to get my arse in gear and look into it sooner rather than later. Thanks a mill 🙌
