I read the articles about this. I was sadded. It made me think of my great aunt and big cousins. They have had hysterectomies due to cancer/ fibroids. I wonder if it was all the GENTLE TREATMENT. My heart sank.

Same… sigh… the sad thing is, you can try to tell people about this, but they will just scoff in your face. I managed to turn one of my family members off from using it but I still have many that continue to use it….
I tried discussing this in another comment section under another video when this first dropped and had this older woman go off on me using God saying God created it to be used and handle the hair or some shit like that. IT WAS CRAZY!! People will do anything for straight hair even if it is detrimental to their health and at that point, you have to be willing to admit it’s more than “just hair”. Ik us black people be turned off QUICK! but when it comes to something like this, people are hesitant to stop/don’t want to give it up??? I’ve also had another woman debate me saying if you “use it correctly” you won’t be at risk. Like sis, ITS GOING ON YOUR HEAD. Sigh…I’m tired.

I’m literally not about to argue with nobody about this. My auntie was suffering from fibroids in her 20s BEFORE she even got pregnant from getting relaxers from age 8. She’s 48 now & is still fighting getting a hysterectomy because it’s so bad. Fast forward she suffered 2 miscarriages, fibroids so heavy that she can soak a after birth pad, her clothes and work chair after 1.5-2hrs. She ended up having to quit her job because she Kept missing so much work. We’ve been known relaxers cause this but a lot of women refuse to give up the crack because they want straight hair or they REFUSE to work on their own hair. I’m over it-it’s definitely self-Inflicted at this point. There’s a reason why black woman are the ONLY group of women who have an astronomical rate of fibroids and we’re the only group who use consistent relaxers…not a coincidence. We didn’t need a article to tell us this, our grandmothers and mommas BEEN TELLING US THIS!

People hate to admit it but if its to a point where you will continue to use products detrimental to your health in an effort to obtain straight hair, then it’s not “just hair” it’s a deeper issue.

I stopped putting relaxers in my hair when I was about 14. As my natural hair started growing I realized I had edges for the first time in my life lmao. The plan was to let my hair grow out and relax it when I was 17 but I started hearing all kinds of horror stories about burns, allergic reactions, hair loss, etc. I thought to myself; it's been a while, what if my scalp reacts badly or something, I didn't want to lose my newfound edges, so I said; hol up, lemme not be too hasty👀. Fast forward 10 years, I'm 24 and I haven't put no relaxers in my hair since. And NOW I'm hearing about relaxers causing cancer for the first time, which is so heartbreaking and scary. I can't even imagine, I just thank goodness I held off on returning to relaxers all those years ago. Honestly, the more I deep it, the idea of my hair going 4c to pin straight in a snap with the use of CHEMICALS highkey terrifies me now.

I’d honestly rather black women become Heat trained naturals rather than subject themselves to cancer risk and burns. I got my first relaxer when I was 10 years old. I got them once or twice a year until a month before my 18th birthday. I am completely natural and have been for 4 years. I will not subject my future daughters to that pain.
My suggestion to black women who prefer to wear straight hair is to get kinky straight wigs and extensions, become heat trained naturals, or if they must get chemical relaxers do so 1 or twice a year. I’m glad black women are concerned about this and looking for alternatives. 🤎

@@brittaniharold1880 theres plenty of people who smoke and dont get lung cancer. It doesnt change the fact that the science says there is a significant risk of lung cancer if you choose to smoke cigarettes. You may develop cancer, you may not. I just dont see the point in playing russian roulette with your health. You dont NEED a relaxer, people only get them just to get them, just for a different look even though you can get straight hair in different ways. People think that relaxers are more low maintanence than natural hair, its really not, its just a different kind of maintenance. Sure you can say that mainenance is worth it which is a valid opinion but its not easier.
About your original comment, you dont have to live in a bubble. Just dont mindlessly follow trends without doing your own research. Take your health more seriously and you will reap the benefits. Less is more i always say.

I went back to relaxer so I wouldn’t have to detangle but now I have microlocs and save even more time doing my hair
