  • Today we are talking about food supplements for cholesterol, which represent a valid support when high cholesterol in the blood is mainly linked to diet and lifestyle.
    We will list the substances contained in the most common supplements and explain how they work.
    However, before choosing whether to take them or not, it is always important to consult your doctor.
    Let's start with soluble dietary fibers, such as beta-glucans, which serve to modulate nutrient absorption. In this case, they tend to sequester fats, reducing the fraction absorbed by the intestine.
    Then there are phytosterols, plant molecules that are structurally similar to cholesterol and which tend to replace it in the intestinal absorption process.
    Lecithins are complex molecules, of both plant and animal origin, also with sequestering activity on fats in the intestinal lumen.
    Chitosan, a polysaccharide derived from shellfish chitin, also decreases the intestinal absorption of fats.
    We continue with phenolic compounds, such as catechins, quercetin and resveratrol. These are powerful antioxidants that protect cholesterol transport proteins, improving their metabolic function.
    Another useful option are policosanols, extracted from vegetable waxes, which act at the liver level by reducing the endogenous production of cholesterol.
    Allicin is a phytochemical element typically contained in garlic, which shows numerous beneficial effects on metabolism, including the reduction of cholesterol.
    Monacolin K is the active ingredient in red yeast rice, and works exactly like a statin drug, but logically has a lower potency.
    Unsaturated fatty acids omega 3, 6 and 9, especially when replacing saturated fats, have a beneficial effect on lipemia, i.e. on the quantity and distribution of fats in the blood. Omega 3, more specifically EPA and DHA, are the most difficult to obtain from the diet and also the most effective in improving lipemia.
    Always remember that food supplements can be a valid support in managing cholesterol, but they must always be accompanied by a balanced diet and regular physical activity.
