Yes, I'm a dog person, but I love all animals and wouldn't harm any, I saw a doe once while deer hunting and didn't think about shooting it I was later told because of my age, around 8 I think, I neither considered it or would have done it but I never went deer hunting again, and after the next time I went hunting rabbit and/or squirrel was my last time going hunting period.

I spent three years making friends with a feral Tom. I didn't even see him the first year, but someone was leaving paw prints and food was disappearing. The second year, I would see him, but he did not want to be touched. He didn't know WHY I would want to touch him. But we had a feeding schedule and he would rarely miss it, and after he ate, he started hanging out near me. He had his own Spot, where he would eat and that Spot grew closer and closer to me. By the third year, he would come when I called him, was starting to tolerate being touched, and oh boy, did he love beef baby food. He would frown at me if I took a liberty and touch him, although when his ears infected from a fight and abscesses, he let me squeeze the pus out and that had to be painful. This was a cat who had never felt the touch of a human hand before and the first time I touched him, he trembled in fear, but months later, he came to me to doctor his ears for him.
He had a front paw that had an injury at one point and one toe was slightly twisted and that claw couldn't retract completely. He would slap me with that paw if I took too much of a liberty, his Paw of Nope, and in day, his claw caught and fish hooked in my hand. I yelled, and showed him my bleeding hand. He raised his head to look into my eyes, something he did rarely, then sniffed my hand... And then he patted my hand with his paw, very gently.
This cat, who had never been touched by anyone by me, who had been terrified by humans, who didn't really liked being touched, who didn't even seem to understand about touching, touched me and patted me when he saw that I was hurt.
He is now an inside cat, who loves to be petted and brushed. His sons live indoors as well, and they are all neutered. He has soft beds to lay on and he follows me from room to room during the day. His name is Tabs and he has found not only his voice but also his purr.

Recently, my cat hissed at me when she was on my lap because I needed to get up and she didn’t want me to. This got me upset at her, so when she later tried to get on my lap, I turned away and wouldn't let her get on. In response, she put her paw on my side, looked at me with pleading eyes, and gave me the softest little meow I've ever heard from her. There's no way I could be upset with her anymore. I let her right on my lap for snuggles and kneading, and made it up to her with some catnip.

One of the cutest moments of owning my beloved kitty came a few weeks ago. I had just gotten an email I had gotten into a highly competitive graduate school, and I immediately burst into tears. As I started to call friends and family to let them know the good news, my cat came RUNNING in from the other side of the house. He then proceeded to purr, bunt, meow, and rub himself all over me. I believe he could hear I was sobbing and thought I must have been really upset!! I think my kitty was trying his best to comfort me, even though they were happy tears. 🥰🥰 I love my baby boy so much!

I had a cat who was the love of my life, who always comforted me when I was sick or sad. I had a hard time explaining happy tears to him, too. Eventually I just let him "comfort" me when I cried happy tears because it was nice sharing the moment with him, anyhow.
BTW, congrats on getting into your grad program. I loved grad school. It was actually way easier than undergrad (both MA & doctorate programs) because you focus solely on what you love & are good at, plus going to university is no longer new to you. Good luck & remember to have fun! 📚🎓

My cat Cleo and I would have bonding sessions every evening that lasted as long as 45 minutes. I'd be relaxing on my recliner and she'd jump onto my lap and when I folded my arms she lay down just like I was cradling a baby. She'd purr loudly as I gave her scritches, rubs, and light ear massages (which she particularly enjoyed) before she'd finally fall asleep. I spoiled her rotten and we both loved it. When she died at age 16 I cried for 3 hours straight. But the memories live on. I miss her.

Our Tortie girl was 7 months old when we adopted her, probably spent 10 to 12 weeks in shelter (2 shelters to be precise, the second taking on the overflow of cats), but before then she was on the streets. She's been here for just over 5 years, and if it weren't for the automatic feeder dropping supper, she'd probably still be under my top blanket, still napping with me.

They say dogs are our protectors in the physical world and cats are our protectors in the spiritual world. I believe this, as I had a rather chilling experience with my cat a few years back. I was in a house I never felt settled in, I never felt like I was truly alone there and felt watched a lot. These feelings came to a head when I was in my bedroom one night with my cat, and I went to leave the room and my cat rushed in front of me and desperately meowed and even pushed me back. I could feel from the bottom of the door that outside my room was fearfully, unnaturally cold, and sensed something seemed very off. I walked back to my bed and my cat came and didn’t leave my side the rest of the night, even though he always usually comes and goes as he pleases. I fully believe he was trying to protect me from…something.
Another experience with my cat was when my rabbit died. In life, my rabbit actually bullied and harassed my cat sometimes, although they did have peaceful grooming sessions side by side. But as my rabbit was dying, my cat came to lay next to him and put his paw on him and never left his side until his last breath.
Animals are a lot more perceptive than us most of the time, and these kinds of experiences really prove this. I don’t know what I would do without my pets, they are truly everything to me. 🩵

My cat supports me when I don’t feel well, he sits on my legs when I’m starting to have a seizure and he came to sit on my hip when I had a surgery in that area and the doctors had recommended I apply pressure to it when I got home. He sat there for hours and kept coming back to sit on it after his meals and stuff until I was better. He’s not a trained service animal, he’s just very caring and in tune with me 🥹 I don’t yell at him but the one time he was really misbehaving and being aggressive to another cat I covered him with a towel and called him a bad boy and he stayed there for 20 minutes 😢 I removed the towel and we hugged as I soothingly told him how much I love him that’s the one time I felt that he felt sad and sorry and I never did it again. In humans the emotions drive us to find words and expressions to make things right. Cats only have the expressions, at least until we figure out universal translators.
I guess I disagree with the video. I think they're wired like us (part of why we get along so well), but have no way to interact verbally on the same level.

I had a cat who had clawed and wrecked the carpet, trying to get into an empty bedroom. I told her off and she ran away down the stairs, but half way down, she turned round came back and meowed at me and then shot off again. To me, that was an apology and I instantly regretted my harsh words and we soon made up.

I absolutely love this video! My cat is truly one of a kind. At the age of 8, her journey has been quite unique. She spent some time in a foster home before I welcomed her into my life, and it appeared she was accustomed to living indoors. However, at some point, she found herself surviving in the wilds of Staten Island for several years. She was rescued after losing an eye, likely from an altercation with another animal. Remarkably, she retained her knowledge of using a litter box, a skill uncommon in feral cats.
What's more intriguing is her preference for affection over food. She particularly enjoys damping my hands, even leading them to water herself. She adores belly rubs during playtime despite her overgrown claws. After a couple of gentle reprimands using my index finger, she understood not to use her claws on me anymore. It's been just five weeks, but my love for her deepens by the day. I'm optimistic that our connection will grow even stronger as time goes by. I'm considering taking her for a claw trim at a grooming salon, but I'm holding off now. I want to ensure she fully trusts me first. I'd be very grateful if anyone has advice or resources about transitioning feral cats to indoor life or knows any helpful videos.

    It depends on the cat.
I had a particularly smart Blackie.
I had a window full of plants he knew I didn't want him in.i never punished or chastised him for being in it but when he would dump one over I would grumble while cleaning up the mess and fussing over the plant.he would try to engage with me buy I would give him sparse attention while cleaning up.
One day I came home and several plants were dumped over and he was no where to be found.so I just start cleaning up.took over an hour and he did not show and I was not grumbling because I did not know where he was.
I sit with a cup of coffee and out of the corner of my eye see him in a dark corner hiding but looking at me with one eye.
I slow blinked to hime and he slow blinked back and slunk out of hiding and climbs into my lap and puzzles and purrs.
I think he knew I was unhappy but I had never raised a hand or voice to him.he was the smartest cat I've ever had.
    I miss him.

Cats are definitely able to apologize in their own way and are able to think things through before making a decision. They know when they are being bad but often times they don't care. My girl Sam would definitely feel remorse if she did something wrong because she would always come back and try to make it right. My boy Toby does too. A stray calico walked up to my sister in her yard this past October, begging for food. My sister let her inside and called me. We came and picked her up and found the prettiest and friendliest little calico you’d ever come across, but oddly enough, was clearly a stray. We had her for only a few days before she escaped for two days. I thought she wasn’t coming back. She came home and wanted more love and affection and food. The girl was a vacuum, eating anything and everything she could get to, even meat I left to defrost on the counter. She clearly had food insecurity and associated me with food, so she became my shadow, following me all over and didn’t want to leave the house unless I was outside with her. She never let me out of her sight. Two months later I realized her two day disappearance resulted in a pregnancy. She delivered one still born and four beautiful babies this December, just in time for Christmas. All the babies found loving homes and her tortie girl stayed with us. My girls are both slated to be fixed in April and May and they are the happiest and most spoiled cats you’ve ever met. Trixie the calico no longer has food insecurity - she actually turned her nose up at some STEAK yesterday! 😮 and Gypsy the tortie is a spoiled little 10 week old girl. They are adored and it shows. ❤

Many people only 'read cats, or indeed other pets' only via their oft limited understanding of their actions or reactions. I.E.They expect the animals to 'behave like humans' & not as themselves. 'Lost in translation' comes to mind. Everyone of the cats who have lived with me have been an absolute joy. We both got to know each other through love, trust & understanding & not in the human pretext of demands without exception.

My babies all show me they love me. However, the greatest surprise was angel, she spent two years hardly acknowledging that I exist. Then one day she came up and bumped my leg. Since then, at least once or twice a day she tells me she loves me. She still is not into petting, or even a lot of attention. I believe she appreciates her independence, and the fact that I give her protection, but don’t interfere in her life. Whereas, my Lux, is extremely affectionate and responsive to my emotions and how I feel. He knows what I’m sick or not feeling good. When I was gone for about three weeks, my cats caregivers so they never saw him. But at night I could see him sleeping in his bed with my cameras. When I came back, before I even unpacked, he was right there to greet me. Of course, I had to go inside, sit down, and let him sleep in my lap for about a half hour or so.

Yes I experienced same with my cat, her name is Samantha (Sammy) she once ran down the stairways and got very anxious (she doesn't like to be outside) so she started to cry and I took her in my arms and she scratched me everywhere while I was holding her. I didn't let her go, because I knew she just wanted to be save in our apartment again, but she lost her way and was confused and scared. Once we got in, she calmed down pretty fast and then she came to me and started to lick my hands where she scratched me. She knew she hurt me, but since I suffer from anxiety it was absolutely fine with me, because I totally understand her behaviour.

I truly think cats can learn the word sorry. My rescue cat and I battled at first with him scratching and biting me. I think he was dumped (he was fixed with no ear clip and knew not to go on counters and furniture). I figure he was still too aggressive and maybe hurt a child and was dumped. No one was looking for him. A lost cat group asked me to foster and I decided to try it. Soon enough, he was just mine when I realized how smart he was. At some point, he head butted my hand after one of the times he hurt me, and I showed him the blood. I said, "Are you sorry?". After that, I reinforced it a few times, asking him to say sorry after something was done wrong. Now if he does something wrong enough and I am upset, if I hold my hand out like a limp fist...he comes over and head butts it. I say, "I forgive you." I truly think he knows it is a way to make things right, which is really what sorry means.

He’s a very vocal cat, if he’s hungry he’ll yell at us, and/or rub up against my leg while murring at me. He used to live with my mother, but after she got a puppy, he wasn’t happy anymore. He’d stay outside for days and hide all the time. After living with us, it’s like he’s a different cat. He chirps and meow all the time and he’s so much happier now.

I separated my cats from a bad fight one time. I got between them and took the elder cat inside and he turned his anger onto me as soon as i set him down. He scratched down my entire forearm and bit me hard enough to draw 4 little dots of blood… i ended up tossing him away from me and storming out of the room to 1- patch up my arm, and 2- take a moment to breathe and let out my own frustration alone.
A couple of hours later, my elderly cat came into my room. I ignored him since i was still upset with him but he jumped up on the bed where i was and snuggled up to me. He never EVER snuggled me before that day. He likes his personal space… it felt like an apology to me. We both needed time to cool off and he made the first move to let me know he still loves me and didnt mean to hurt me.

I'm not convinced entirely ... My neighbour has a cat who would visit me a
Lot. He spent equal time between my place and Pat's. I had treats for Oscar which I kept on the kitchen, behind the cushion on a chair. One day I heard strange noises and went to see what it was. Oscar was secretly himself to the treats, and I have never seen a cat look so guilty beforw!
I'd never told him off for anything (and didn't then, either). He looked guilty and worried, as if he was concerned about my reacrion.
Pat asked.me if I'd take care of Oscar if she ever couldn't, and when she died Oscar moved in with me.
I will never forget his little face when he helped himself to those treats!

One of my cats absolutely understands what she should and should not do. She understands the words "no," "play nice," and "supper." She likes to lick and chew on plastic and she knows I don't like when she does it. Cats don't all have the same intelligence just like humans don't. A highly intelligent cat can have the IQ and understanding of a 2-3 year old child. This is why treating your cat well is so important. I've seen youtube videos of people sticking things to their cat's feet, or chasing them to see them freak out. If you wouldn't do a behavior to a toddler, then do NOT do it to your cat.

I have 2 cats who understand quite a few words. Actually cats are capable of understanding between 20 and 50 words. I have trained them to sit and lie down on command . They know up, treat, eat, tree ( cat tree), no, go, come , out, in, food, wait, down, brush, and probably more words than I think they know. Cats like many animals are much more intelligent than people think.

My current cat Bella got depressed when my old cat Kiki got put down. She wouldn’t eat at all at first (whether that was cuz she was used to Kiki eating it all or sadness idk obviously) then after that she’s eat so much/fast she would puke. Then the puking got worse and turned into projectile vomiting insane amounts. It took along time but I got her healthy again by feeding her TINY amounts MUUULTIPLE times a day. (This whole time we had a dog also btw) when said dog passed away last year…. I was so scared Bella would go back to being depressed and projectile vomiting…. (This is basically right after I got her to stop..) But… she actually seems WAY happier. Which obviously makes me sad for my dog but so happy for her. She’s like a whole nother cat now. She follows me everywhere, constantly wants UPPIES, talks SOOOO much, barely pukes and when she does it’s just a normal cat puke. And this trooper is going on 16 this year. Doesn’t act like it. You would def think she was 8 MAX but probably younger.
I wanted so bad to get another dog or cat but Bella would hate it. We dog sat for one of my mom’s friends awhile back and Bella was NOT happy.
So she’s going to live the rest of her days as an only child middle child ❤️ that way she gets ALL the love and attention

Cats express their love differently, it’s subtle yet very touching. I have a territorial cat, she’s sassy and a diva. Yet when I was at my lowest, she spent her time with me, checks on me with her paws when I stare into oblivion, initiates play (she’s over her play years, she’s 12 years old then), meows loudly when she’s in another room and makes me find her, she would legit hide. It was really subtle, but her suddenly playing hide and seek with me when she’s a 12 year old cat then, really diverted my attention from my problems and would make me laugh. She even hid in different spots every single time

When I first moved in with my friend his female cat was indifferent to me, the stray male that hung around would run away when I came in, after a while the female started jumping on my chest and chilling while I slept. After another month passed she recognized my pattern and would wait by the couch for me to cook and eat my steak then hop on my chest as soon as I laid down, I was her favorite place to sleep. I say sleep but every time I woke up she would be right there staring into my eyes with her forepaws tucked under her, comfy as could be. If it was time for me to get up she would jump down, if not she would wait to see what I did before she reacted, if I just petted her or stroked her neck she would stay and start purring. One day my friend came home for lunch and saw her laying on me and from the look on his face you'd think he caught me sleeping with his wife. 😅 It was really that dramatic. 😂 It was funny.

I wish you would do a video about how to touch cats and dogs. Always initiate contact by letting them smell you before you invade their personal space, which really freaks them out. They might bite you if you scare them. Cats are so sensitive and usually don't like to be poked, or touched roughly or patted hard or stroked fast for more than a few seconds. It makes them really nervous. However, if you have a butt kitty, it will turn its tail to you and that means
"Please scratch the base of my tail a little harder." And never ever rest the weight of your hand or arm on them. Its too heavy. Especially with kittens, their bones are so tiny and can easily break, like rabbits bones, too. Cats that are aggressive and hiss, are frightened and in pain. As soon as you can afford it, get their whole bodies x-rayed and see what might be going on. My own usually affectionate kitty started leaping all over the house and hissing at me. Turns out a dog had jumped on her outside and broken her leg badly. She was in agony. Read the signs and don't assume you know what is going on with them. Be respectful to their little lives and bodies.

I use to travel with my cat in an RV across America. He was my side kick and we were never separated. He'd go with me everywhere. Well, after I moved into a house, I left one day to run errands and was gone maybe about 2 hours. When I got back, I was carrying my groceries up to the door and I heard a cat wailing in despair. I sat the groceries down on the sidewalk bc I wanted to find the distressed cat and help it. I looked under bushes, under tables, chairs, gutters, you name it. I was out hunting for the poor thing for about 30 minutes. When I couldn't find it, I decided to take the groceries inside then head back out and look some more. As I got up to the house the cry got louder and louder until I realized it WAS MY CAT INSIDE!!! Thinking my cat was stuck somewhere and hurting, I dropped all the groceries on the ground, (yep food went everywhere), and I belined it through the door and inside. When I opened the door, my fur baby was just sitting in the middle of the living room crying his eyes out. When he saw me come through the door, he ran to me and dropped belly up, then got up and ran to our cuddle chair, then back to me, hen to the chair. I picked him up and cuddled him for HOURS!!! He now still goes everywhere with me, even errands. If it's hot outside, I don't go or use a stroller to take him inside with me. Oh very much so they get attached.

I’ve learned it’s usually because they’ve never had one. I know a couple people that didn’t like cats and then completely changed after getting one or having a cat show them affection. Some people just haven’t experienced that so they don’t understand; dogs are more emotionally needy so a lot more often they show affection and are friendly to strangers.

It’s not a common occurrence so it was really shocking to see it happen and on right on something I really enjoyed. I knew it wasn’t her fault and accidents happen but she could tell I was upset. Within minutes all three of our girls were in the room and two were nuzzling and purring at me.

They do understand when they've done something wrong through your reaction like when mine jumped on the table right in my plate of food. The second I gasped he quickly jumped down with ears folded having a nervous reaction. When I sat the plate down in front of him and said " you might as well eat it now that you've stepped in it ". I think he understood my tone of voice and was too upset to even sniff it and walked away. He knew he did wrong. He never jumped on the table again after that.

When I got back I decided to take a nap on the living room couch, and when I woke up he was standing up on the armrest at the foot of the couch, staring at me, and as I got up a dead, bloodied mouse tumbled from my chest to the floor. My cat never apologise, because she does everything right. She never breaks anything. I can build up my Christmas tree and let it there for months and its perfectly fine.
My cat though is very jealous. Last Tuesday she hissed to my best friend and I though, she just doesn't want her to be around, but after my friend left, she sat near me and purred and wanted me to pet her, which I did, because I love that she says: "Enough now, go home. I want to be alone with my human!" 😅😅
She also is very shy with me, so if she wants to be petted, she will knit near me and purr and stare at me, she will never make the first step.
The best way how to show her my love is to burry my nose in her belly 😅😅 I am obsessed with her, to be honest, it goes beyond every love I have felt for humans 😅😅 And don't get me wrong: I love my friends and my boyfriend and family. Its just that I love my cat more and they all know it 😅😅

Cats are super smart, and if they know you are hurt because of something they did, not only will they most likely not repeat that mistake too many times, but they often do approach quite more gently than they would if their owner were upset with someone else.

First time cat owner here! Just wanna say this is very informative, thank you!
Wanna share a bit of story about my cat..
My cat found me when he was still a kitten. Appeared out of nowhere from an abandoned house near mine. At first, he was very fearful of humans, and he'd bolt as soon as he saw us. But we kept giving him food and slowly, he began to stay closer and closer to our house until one day, we found him in our garden, playing. Now, we can carry him and pet him and he'd just let us. Unlike dogs, I feel like cats are more wary creatures so when you get their trust, it feels so, so special. ❤
