- With the first four Star Trek movies arriving on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray tomorrow in celebration of Star Trek’s 55th anniversary, I recently got to speak with William Shatner about being part of one of the most important series of all time. While Star Trek only lasted three seasons when it originally aired in the 1960’s, its impact on our planet cannot be fully measured. Think about how many people watched the series on television, or in syndication, and heard the words “to boldly go where no man has gone before” and were inspired.
Unlike most series airing at the time, Star Trek dealt with moral and social issues like discrimination and slavery, while addressing those and other topics with an interracial cast and a multi-ethnic crew. In addition, Star Trek was one of the first series to feature a Black actress (Nichelle Nichols) in a position of power as the ship's communications officer. These are just some of the examples of Star Trek’s positive vision of the future. And while I can point out the many ways it impacted our society, Star Trek was my first entry to the world of science-fiction, and it absolutely changed my life for the better.
During my interview with William Shatner, he talked about working with director Robert Wise on Star Trek: The Motion Picture, if he knew during the making of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan that it would be such a special film, what he remembers about making director Leonard Nimoy’s Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and the films powerful message about our environment, how Star Trek IV incorporated whales, and more. He also shared his thoughts on going back and redoing older VFX and fixing mistakes with modern technology.

Bill’s such a gem - with both DeForest and Leonard being gone - we just really need to cherish that we still have Bill with us after all this time - he’s the last of a golden era of Trek that for me now in my 50’s I look back at with so much nostalgic love - a more innocent and simpler time

90 years old! Looking at him I wouldn't believe it, Shatner looks more like a 60-year-old. He looks remarkably fit and well. I hope he makes 100, I don't see why not.

Shatner started the interview in a great way: asking a question that shows he serriously had thought about and was interested in the other person's humanity, and establishing that he was focused on making it a good interview.
Yeah, what an interesting beginning by wanting to know a little bit about the interviewer before even starting out the questions. What a great opening!
Bill is a lifelong learner. He is genuinely interested in people's stories. I think this is what makes him so incredibly vital at this advanced age.
It is amazing to me how good he looks to be 90 years old. Amazing.
I think William Shatner and Tom Baker are two brilliant examples of finding contentment in life as they grow older. Both had a sort of arrogance in their youth that unintentionally alienated those around them, but as they've aged they have learned what life is all about and understand their place in it.
You are right, but you cant blaime them, Shatner was Kirk from 1966 to 1987 without any other captain (1987 -1994 alongside Picard) He was Star Trek Tom Baker was the Doctor from 1974 -1981 and still doing audios, he pretty much is the Doctor. Loved by fans, got more and more influence on their shows, you cant do that without feeling "most important". But both of them are so lovley when talking about the past

I did hear they approached him like they did Picard to do one of those crap Star Trek series where they can disgrace him, and he turned it down. I wouldn't blame him if he did. That is definitely no way to have Captain Kirk's legacy end. Of course, now they'll have to find another way to ruin it.

He looks incredible for his age! I've always liked the original series, even though it was clunky because of it's shoe string budget, I thought it was a very sincere show, and ahead of it's time.

You can't help but love Shatner. I imagine there is no question about Star Trek he hasn't heard over the years but he's more than comfortable talking about that and everything else. Add to it his singing of Space Oddity and that's gold Jerry! Gold!

Have to say it looks like botox is involved. Maybe not, as I prefer people to leave their faces alone. But it seems unusually puffy in that interview.

@@aarondyer.pianist It may just be natural weight gain that affects his face. But even if he did do botox, that’s still alot better than plastic surgery. He’s also in great physical health which is obviously the most important thing.

It's funny he doesn't think he looks good. I wonder if everyone feels that way about themselves. I know when I was younger when I cared I felt the same way about my looks.
I love the wisdom he shared at the end about the continuity of life and persevering until things brighten up again. The interviewer seemed to miss the deeper meaning of it all but I'd be nervous interviewing Shatner too.
Astounding to listen to him and remember that he's 90(!!!!) Years old. He has the conversational pace of someone 30 and even then, a GOOD 30 year old conversationalist: engaging, witty, great cognition and memory.

Shatner looks and sounds incredible for 90 and mentally sharp. Compare to someone else at 78.

I agree with Shatner, leave it as is. It's has one of the best lines in all of Trek! "What does GOD need a Starship!" Plus the camping scenes re-enforces what great friends, Kirk, Spock, and McCoy are. Star Trek V is totally underrated. I'm going to watch it for star trek day.
I like a lot of lines he had over all the films (including the TOS shows). One I like a lot is: "I cheated death... and patted myself on the back for my ingenuity..." Always liked Shatner no matter what negativity comes his way. It was his "keep it real... it's just a show..." attitude that makes him... him! Not bad for 90.
It isn't a good film but it does have some good lines. I need my pain is one of the best in the series. And it isn't obsessed with lens flares at least.
The chemistry of the cast is what elevates ST V for me. It's a good natured Sci-fi slightly naive adventure with some fun moments. Also as a soundtrack fan i completely love the Goldsmith score which also adds to the film's worth. The music brings out the emotion and excitement.
I don't agree with the uneven numbers being worse at all. I can watch the first 6 and have a great time.
Yeah, that movie had it's problems, but it was no where as bad as people made it out to be. It still has the core that makes Star Trek a decent movie....the characters. That is the heart of every Star Trek movie and show. Without it, you have nothing. Maybe Shatner isn't the best for making a plot, but he understood the soul of Star Trek and what made people come to watch it.
+ Jamie's Jukebox I am not a Tekkie but like the focus of Episode 5 for the reasons you mention. Just an TOS fan. Trek fans like to crap on it, but it showed the bond the main cast characters had (Kirk, Spock, McCoy and yes, the rest are SUPPORTING cast regardless what they think and what Rodenberry tried to impose later on). No fan of the reboot Star Wars version of Star Trek. As a stand alone in its own timeline let it be just that. but a replacemnet of TOS it JJ Abrhams stunk at it.

My mother loved this man. She'd religiously watch TJ Hooker and say 'he's my boyfriend'. I can definitely see what she saw in him, though. He's probably 40 years older than me, and I still think he's handsome.
Just saw him at DragonCon this year. Amazed at how sharp he still is at the age of 90!

That's also why the interviewer said "considering you're only 55" and Bill said 56.

I see a lot of trolls giving Mr. Shatner hell on Twitter and other social media but I have to say I love this guy, every since I saw the original series on TV when I was 7 yrs old, he has been one of my hero's to look up to. I hope to meet him someday at some kind of Star Trek Convention if he still attends those....
He was touring the country a couple yrs back and I saw him here in Michigan. They showed ST2 and then he talked and answered questions for about an hour afterwards. It was really fantastic and I wouldn’t think twice about seeing him again. So hopefully his health will hold up and he’ll do another tour down the road.
Watching Shatner in 2021 talk about Star Trek has become heartbreaking. Beyond the overall bleak place the franchise is in these days (which is it's own thread), it is sad that "the powers that be" won't let Shatner work on a "Director's Cut" of Star Trek V or write anymore of his Shatner-verse books. Both could be lifeline to classic Trek fans that have otherwise been chased away. Too bad. I personally would spend money on Star Trek again if they did either of these things.
I read some of the Shatner Trek books (where he comes back from Generations) and they are actually quite well done. Would have been a hell of a movie series if they had adapted them.

@@jasonschlierman412 Star Trek was and still follows Gene Roddenberry's reasoning to create the franchise. To show people in a time when the human race could go extinct in a nuclear flash that mankind would not only survive,but prosper in the future.
Throughout this soul crushing Pandemic, Star Trek of any era still gives people hope for the future.
William Shatner acknowledged that "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" was messed up because of the numerous production disruptions.
That and the fact the script was constantly re-written and not consistent as they started shooting and already where in the middle of the production.
I remember watching the Star Trek movies at the cinema and I always thought Shatner wouldn't make it to old age, boy I was wrong, the man is more lucid than most 70 year olds, absolutely amazing, he truly is a living legend.

This guy might be 90 but his body and brain are easily a 60 year old. Patrick Stewart is incredible but his speech has slowed down a lot in the last 7 or 8 years and hes a good amount younger than Shatner.

Bill sounds EXACTLY like he did in the 1990s. His speech hasn't slowed down at all and his voice is still strong. His mind is obviously still sharp. He's doing great.
But Patrick Stewart is still going! Keep doing what you love to the very end.

He's dealt with more than enough socially awkward dorks over the years - Good on him for coralling this one before he makes a fool of himself.
Shatner is one of the biggest inspirations out there for someone I don't know and never met. After so many years, and watching all the other series, it can't be overstated how Shatner and Nimoy are Star Trek. No other series could exist on its own without having TOS precede it. The chemistry and charisma of its actors just does not compare to me. Inasmuch as he is Captain Kirk, he has proven he can transcend the character. I find that so rare.
Shatner has done well staying mentally sharp into old age. Live long and prosper.
I grew up with Mr. Shatner, seeing him in movies and TV shows and in early 2020 one of my childhood dreams came true and i saw him live on Stage while he did his tour. It felt like being blessed and having the rarest privilege on earth and that is something nobody can ever take from me. As a kid he always reminded me a bit of my dad and we both went to see him live and watching Star Trek II (the directors cut) during this event. And for that i will forever be grateful. Having the chance to talk to him personally must have been so awesome and i envy you a little :)
I've watched a lot of william shatners guest appearances in other series and movies...he is a remarkable actor,star trek did not always showcase his full range.
Loved him in Boston Legal.
He is the only 90-year-old man I've ever seen that looks as good and is that sharp mentally. In the past people weren't this sharp and good looking at 90, but as we go on into the future with all of the health technology that we have more people will achieve this look and mental clarity.

My father was still sharp at 90,although he did not have the "benefits' of surgical enhancements. Not putting Mr Shatner down but he has been in Hollywood for a long time. Bill Shatner still has all of his mental faculties,which is wonderful.
Another one who is not far behind is director William Friedkin, at 86 he talks, moves, thinks like someone 30 years younger.

Mr. Shatner, my brother and I had the privilege of meeting you at a relatively small convention in Bellevue, Washington (near Seattle, Washington). I am not in the habit of binge watching anything, but during the COVID-19 pandemic, I decided to re-watch the STAR TREK features films after a twenty-year hiatus. I was filled with gratitude and joy when I saw HOW WELL these films held up, better, in my opinion, than most of the films of that era. At the time, I used to take some ribbing for identifying myself as a Trekkie rather than a Star Wars fan primarily (although one can, in fact, enjoy both). But now I realize with great humility... I WAS RIGHT! LIVE LONG AND PROSPER!
Pleasant discussion. Very nice of Mr Shatner to offer his time, and to ask about the website. I listened intently while he talked about the cancellation of the series, and the sadness and trepidation that any actor would feel. He went through a very tough time himself. And it was nearly ten years before the first film came out. Yes, he does look great for 90!
I’m a fan of “Star Trek: The Motion Picture.” It’s true that it was rushed at the end, with Paramount wanting it in cinemas by Christmas 1979. But Robert Wise did an outstanding job. He came to the task with a wide variety of films under his belt, including “The Andromeda Strain.”
His statement about just hanging in there until something happens was the message I needed to hear. Been hard at work with my dreams but things happen. This gave me some more courage. Thanks

But Harve Bennett did write the screenplay for Star Trek IV. He didn't write it alone-Nicolas Meyer and Steve Meerson and Peter Krikes cowrote it, too.
Precisely. Bennett wrote the 23rd century 'envelope' and Meyer took the 20th century segment that comprises most of the film, injecting his own brand of humor that clicked so well with the type seen in the Gene Coon episodes of the original series.
@@jimbrooks9470 Myer proposed a Khan Miniseres and Kurtman rejected it a couple years ago. Then he created a screen play for a movie last year and JJ Abrams rejected it, then Kurtzman. Those freaking hacks rejected ideas from Myer! What a freaking joke modern Trek has become! They re-hired Kurtzman for another 5 years of junk. They should have given that job to Nicolas Myer!

I came here to hear about Nicolas Myer, Director of Khan and Undiscovered Country and the guy who should head all Trek film and TV. He's a genius and still writing but totally shut out of Trek by Paramount and Alex Kurtzman the hack in charge.
Time After Time was interesting movie he did, too. I just listen to the Audio Commentary on the Documentary of FOR THE LOVE OF SPOCK, Adam Nimoy and a Hollywood Reporter argue on what the "Citizen Cane" is of the Star Trek films. Adam Nimoy says it's his dad's film Star Trek IV and the Hollywood Reporter says it's The Wrath of Kahn. My favorites are The Voyage Home and Undiscovered Country. I love the fact, that the dad from That 70's Show is Alien Leader in it. Just saw The Voyage Home in a Theater this past month. It was Awesome !!!

Ive noticed that Shatner never really goes into talking about Nick Meyer and his contributions to 2 and 4 in most interviews. As if giving others credit takes away from his thoughts. Look, alongside Harve Bennett, Meyer saved Trek. Period, and its not a coincidence that any Trek he was involved in was fantastic. We need “old school” style Trek again, but that didnt jive with Kurtzman’s shallow soulless garbage, so they rejected everything he did, and pushed him out. I bet the “Ceti Alpha Five” script was incredible, and they should have let him make it. That dont know class when they see it.

Always love anything about Star Trek TOS I got to see William Shatner at a convention in the Dallas area in the 90’s. It was such a pleasure to meet him up close. I wish only the best for him. And thank you for posting.
The original theatrical release of Star Trek: The Motion Picture was a rough-cut as the studio didn't give Robert Wise enough to time to do a proper job of completing the FX in post-production so the 20th anniversary director's cut is basically as it would appeared if Paramount had given Robert Wise the time he'd needed. The director's IIRC also included the original theatrical release on it too.
As a film this directors cut indeed works a lot better, pasting wise and really makes a lot more sense as well. Especially when it comes to the whole scale thing. We see the long introduction shots of the retrofit enterprise, we see the cloud and how small the enterprise is and actually get to really see the V'ger ship and get an idea where the Enterprise was even flying along. All that was really missing in the 79' theatrical cut.
They were so busy making sure the special effects would wow the audience, they forgot that what made Star Trek was the characters, which they barely focused on. I don't even know if there was a plot worth mentioning. It was all visual spectacle. Thank god somebody figured it out in Star Trek 2.
Shatner looks damn good for his age compared to Stewart. Hope I look as good at his age lol.

I had the pleasure of seeing William Shatner in Grand Rapids, MI a couple yrs ago. They showed the entire Star Trek 2 film & then Captain Kirk himself came out onto the stage. He told several funny stories about Star Trek, DeForest Kelly getting mad about a bagel, his beloved dog, the Halloween movie mask that was based on a mold of his face, getting stopped by awestruck cops while he was driving a 100 mph on his way to a convention & and many more. He also answered questions by ppl in the audience. I knew it would be funny but holy crap! He totally brought the house down. And, even though there was a chair to sit in & a female host, he spent most of the time walking around on the stage, like some caged tiger, while he talked (which made it even funnier). Can't believe he's 90 yrs old now. Still has a ton of energy & is sharp as a tack. Also funny as hell. If this acting thing hadn't worked out so well for him, I think he would've been a great standup comedian.
So if you guys get the chance, you should definitely go see him. He's not only a living legend but also very entertaining to listen to. I only wish I had done the VIP experience so I could've met him after the show. But it was still a great experience.
Please get this man in one more Star Trek movie/show/film.

With what they're doing with Star Trek nowadays, I actually wouldn't. Anything this new generation does would only ruin the character. I'll happily accept what Shatner has done and leave it at that, where he goes ontop as a proud symbol of hope for future generations.

Watching Bill's interviews and such over the years, I always wonder how he actually feels about all the questions concerning Star Trek. Does he ever get sick and tired of Trek this, Trek that...
Yes and no. Podcast aren't for everyone. But I remember Chris Hardwick interviewed Bill on his podcast "Nerdist" now known as ID10 back around 2013. Throughout their conversation,Chris never once brought up Star Trek. Bill acknowledged at the end he appreciated that. Chris did that to stand out from all the other interviews Bill Shatner has done over the years.
Bill recounting his discovery of the Beetles late in life was funny and proves better late than never.

I think Mr. Shatner looks incredible for is age, and his voice, If just our voices would stay the same like his, that would be amazing, let alone looking as good as he does!

I watched TOS in the 90's when I was a kid. It was old and outdated by the look, however the story was so interesting, I was totally amazed as a kid. Thank you "Captain Kirk" for inspiring me as a kid!

I've been a fan of William Shatner since 1966. He was my first crush and I still love him. Conseqently, I have 52 years of memorabilia; several of his autographs, a signed Hamilton Collection plate of the Trouble with Tribbles, books, records, posters, etc. I also have all the cast autographs with the exception of DeForest Kelley who I never got the chance to meet. Unfortunately, I must part with my collection. If anyone out there is interested, please reach out to me.
I'm often amazed when people pick up on the slightest detail and complain about it when others will overlook it and say OK I'll let that slide and enjoy the movie
Mr.Shatner you are a physical marvel. My own sons never got to meet their GrandPa, my Dad. So when they ask me what was he like I point them to YOU! Your magnificent physique matches my Dad's uncannily. He was a powerful man for his modest size. A solid block of muscle. Not the ridiculous "SCHWARZENEGGER"-style, steroid fueled one. A body earned through a lifetime of truly hard work from farm, to WWII slave laborer and beyond into liberated factory laborer, construction, etc.
He and you would've gotten along well together despite his Polish Roman Catholic roots and your CANADIAN Jewish ones.
He had served, bravely in his army in defense of the NAZI invasion of 1939 as a recalled sodier. Was wounded in the battle then horrors and total deprivation for three years in NAZI "P.O.W." camp. I can only imagine the agonies he endured. I had a "pussy's" life by comparison.
My Dad? True hero. So sorry I NEVER recorded him telling his stories. He always recounted them to our newest guests at holidays. I just rolled my eyes. Little did I know, eh?

Doing pretty good for a 90-year-old. Have to say I really think his career got a decent boost when he took on Denny Crane. I mean so funny and perhaps his best none Star Trek role of recent years.
When you compare him to say Clint Eastwood, he looks alot younger.
