I was 'meh' when I heard Wiilian Shatner was going into space. Wasn't expecting much. But he was the person we NEEDED to do this.
I can't believe he's 90! He is still all there, perhaps even more than he's ever been "there" before. William Shatner has become as profound and wise as his years.

The saddest part is that it takes going into space to realize how precious and unique this life harboring planet is.
It's how Perspective works.
Also how fragile. People look up into the sky and see the blue and it seems like it just goes on and on. But once you've been a few miles up you can see with your own eyes that that's just an illusion. It's just a thin sheen, fragile and precious. In fact if you've ever taken an airliner nearly 3/4 of the Earth's atmosphere was below you.

I love how the rest of the crew was playing in the zero g, and Shatner was just transfixed by the view he saw in the window.

You can achieve zero g today in an ordinary airplane, but not the view from the window from this height. William Shatner used the flight time well.
The rest of them are paid to portray a particular attitude. They’re the actors up there. Part of the agenda.
Maybe the rest of the crew already got it, and so they played in the rarity of zero G ... and it was the pampered actor Shatner that needed to "get it".
But still ... a new, truly global earth religion could be built around Shatner's revelation, humility, clarity and star power.
It’s like he had a glimpse into eternity and was absolutely astounded by what it was he did witness. I love those moments. And it taken humility for him to share his experience.

I have had the honor of speaking with astronauts about their experience. They understand the juxtaposition of an engineered vehicle that enables you to see space as well as look back at earth. The appreciation is life changing.
That is totally different from Bezos selling the ride as becoming an astronaut. Being a passenger has zero to do with navigation or piloting a space craft. I believe that the majority of the millennials see through the hype and are not hornswaggled.

Yup- Bezos has been twice up there , well, almost left the planet the first time round, but still seems like the no taxpaying union busting billionaire jerk he has always been so wasted on him. Bezos has gained no insight and seems emotionless , just thinking about how he can capitalize on it for himself- which all those rockets are using fuel (yes, even Musk's has a detrimental effect on the environment) which greatly adds to the carbon footprint too.. I do love Bill Shatner and he was very poetic & heartfelt in expressing his views on it.

Well, in all fairness, I have heard him say similar things in the past so it's not like he was some ignoramus that needed to go on a rocket in order to get the big picture. I did hear one of the Apollo astronauts say once that he wished all the politicians who cause most of the problems in this world could be sent into space to so they wouldn't be so small minded. However I doubt that would work in reality because I don't think you should 'have' to go into space to understand the world is an amazing place which humans have practically destroyed because it's all so obvious now that any politician/dirtbag who is making money off exploiting the planet and is still saying everything is fine is so out of touch and/or lying that I doubt ANYTHING would be able to open their eyes to reality. They could be taken by an alien race right across the milky way and back at hyper-light speed and come back saying 'That was interesting, get my accountants working on my oil stock portfolio to see how much more profit they can squeeze out of those carbon credits'. NOTHING is going change those types of people yet they're the ones standing in the way of the necessary change, so it's like good fk'n luck everyone. It's more like put your head between your legs and kiss your butt goodbye, and then humans vanish as another victim of the Drake equation. Hopefully some of the animals survive. We at least know cockroaches probably will - and I don't mean the human kind.

I always thought an artist would have a strong reaction to the reality of space. I never thought it would be William Shatner, I never thought it would be this well received. I always thought it would be that remarkable. Bravo Bill ! The perfect choice for such a flight.
I love the fact that they chose him, because it DEFINITELY wasn't wasted on him. He ate every bit of that experience and left no crumbs.

Even if he contributed a small amount to global warming, he also described what he saw and his view that we need to unite on the important things that effect us all and not squabble over the details. That was a visceral reaction, the kind humans only get when they face something for real, not as a concept. I remember hearing an astronaut once, saying that he was actually surprised not to see any borders on the planet. From orbit, it's just one planet, you can't see the countries, much less their petty disputes. You can conceptualize that, but actually seeing it hits you differently. We all need to go to space.
The analogy I got from my high school science teacher; If the Earth was the size of a basketball, the envelope of atmosphere would be no thicker than a piece of paper wrapped around it. That’s our pocket folks. That’s the precious and tiny little niche where all life, that we’re aware of, including most humans, evolved and are consigned to live and die. It’s not really all that big when you think about it. Can we really think it wise or smart to use our common pocket of breathable air as an open cesspool for industrial effluents?, and think we can deal with the consequences at some later, unspecified date? Good on Bill Shatner.

Not gonna lie, I was initially very cynical about this whole "Kirk in space" thing. Honestly it just felt like a meme, and it was definitely conceived as a publicity stunt by Bezos' team, and that's depressing. But I'm really glad Shatner had a deeply moving existential experience and is using his moment to share that and to speak some truth.

I absolutely love William Shatner so much since I was a kid. Just hearing that small snippet of that song I began to sob and it was the video pieces that also tore at my heart. I'm so glad I was able to catch this video I didn't even know anything about him going in space. I'm sick myself and I can't imagine what the Earth feels like right now. If we all can put ourselves in place of the earth when we are sick or tired and just don't feel like we can go on that's how our beautiful blue planet feels it just feels like it can't go on unless we start doing something to fix it. I'm 38 and my father was an original Trek-ie. So much so that I attended 2 different Star Trek conventions in Boston , in my youth.
William Shatner is a national treasure and it's hard to believe he's 90, simply because of his obvious sharpness at his age, not to mention how good he looks. Amazing to see him so moved due to that experience, which out of any civilian, he deserves.

If not for my uncle, I would not have believed it would be possible for anyone to look and sound that good at 90. My uncle turned 90 back in January, and he is in about as good a shape as Mr. Shatner. He has a full head of hair, sharp mentally, walks without any assistance, and looks almost the same now as he did when he was 70. Just amazing. God bless you, Mr. Shatner!

Man, it is SO hard to believe that he's freaking 90 years old. He barely looks a day over 75. And he deserved this beautiful trip. I'm so incredibly happy for him. What he experienced is a common, psychological reaction to seeing Earth from up in space, and it's a treat to hear him try and explain it as much as he can. "I hope I never recover from this" is probably the best way to express his feelings. Absolutely beautiful.

I felt emotional when my airplane landed in Tenerife, I was 25 and had left with my parents when I was
4 years old. It was irrational, but my legs were wobbly, my heart was pounding and my eyes welled with tears, I was “home” . I think that is what happened to William Shatner.

I went into overload a few years ago and my empathy breaker tripped. I kept it off to be somewhat functional in this horror show of a time where we are helpless and at the mercy of the merciless and deliberately ignorant. I imagine many others are in the same boat, it is just too painful to feel this impending murder suicide humanity is hellbent on seeing through.

And in that regard, I'm sure he sees Shatner's emotional response as perfect, something that will encourage more people who "have everything" to add 10 minutes in space" to their bucket list.
Maybe I felt similar emotions to Shatner when I climbed up Pike's peak in my 20s (9.5 hours up and down), and also seeing the total solar eclipse 4 years ago now (also brief, just a few minutes of blackness).
I think I'll wait for clean antigravity technology before I'll go into space, although if we got that, I suppose we'd make a mess of that anyway, probably convert it into a cheaper weapon delivery system.

Buzz Aldrin fell into alcoholism after his return from the moon/space. It's was pretty much realizing that no matter what you do after you've reached the peak of your accomplishments and it's all downhill from there. For Shatner I imagine it's more that he's at the end of his life and saw it as something he wanted to do before he died and all he got was a brief glimpse and then it was over.
Astronauts offer report what sound very similar to enlightenment upon seeing the earth from on high. Very cool!

What he saw was his humanity. It takes a long time for people to understand that. I’m lucky enough to have gone through massive tragedy in my life at the age of 26 to finally understand what it means to be alive. I can tell you that this world is definitely doomed if we don’t turn a different way. William Shatner somebody who I’ve always seen as an individual to inspire and it’s interesting to see that just at the age of 90 he’s finally seeing his humanity.

When I was 41 I had a terrible accident. I was on a ventilator for 3 weeks and the outlook was dire. On the second day I was embraced by 3 beings of light and taken out of my body. I went home with them to a beautiful star and realized that the star was made of the light of every soul, past and future of every living being. The peace, love and joy was indescribable!! The closer to the center that we went the mode dense and deep the beauty of the emotions became and I learned that the center was God and that we are all God. The other thing I noticed were the pinpricks on the outside of that beautiful star. Close enough to realize it but not close enough to feel it. That was truly hell, the turning away of everything perfect, I couldn’t imagine the loneliness. After 3 days they told me that the doctors could care for me on their own and I had to return. I begged to stay and they told me that it wasn’t my time and that I still had work to finish. I hadn’t had much of a sense of purpose before. I learned that when I needed it I would have the knowledge and wisdom that would trust. It has always been so. We chose when and where we come here and we chose our job. I was in the hospital for 2 months and spent a year learning to walk again. I’m in constant pain that is getting worse the older I get and I can deal with it because I know it’s purpose is to give me empathy for people that others can’t relate to. I know how it feels to be in constant pain and the lengths we’ll all go through to find relief from that pain be it physical or mental or spiritual. I don’t need to see the small blue dot that we are to understand the how insignificant and yet how beautiful and important we are as a planet and as humanity itself. We’re all connected to the universe, to the planet , to each other and to every living thing on this planet. If we can’t take care of each other and therefore the planet then we are doomed . This is our only home and when we destroy it through our greed and hatred we will all go home …. Or not.

I'm 66 and a Trekkie. My little brother and I HAD to watch Star Trek every week. We watched in black and white but we always looked forward to "boldly go where no man has gone before". It was so fitting that Captain Kirk saw the stars and felt the awful weight of humanity. Only he could translate it to we, the earthbound. I cried too when I saw him on Chris Cuomo's show. For me, it made a circle. Willian Shatner was a good and wise Captain back in the middle to late 60's. And now, at 90, he has seen a revelation and brought it back to open our eyes in 2021. I love William Shatner. He says people don’t want to see. I’d add that when you deny what is right in front of you, there can so much self loathing and rage and it is often directed at the object you don’t want to see.

A planet that can no longer sustain what we've done & continue to do to it. Yet people still don't get it & they can't see the bigger picture.
