    Very nice video. Using your video, I added some steps that you do not show to help us newbies . Thank you.

    1- Plug USB from Scanner to Computer
    2-You will get “USB Cable Detected”. Press and hold “E” (bottom right key on scanner) for USB Mass Storage.
    3-Open up your BCDx36HP_Sentinel software. You should see a hierarchal tree layout of your scanner files; Database with USA and Canada frequencies. I bought my scanner pre-loaded with my County frequencies so they are under my Favorites List.
    4-In Sentinel press Scanner tab, then Read from Scanner. Now all frequencies on my scanner are in Sentinel to manipulate; Set Avoid/Clear Avoid, Remove from Favorites List, or Append (add) from Database to my Favorites.
    5-Once you do your update(s) in Sentinel software, do File then Save.
    6- In Sentinel press Scanner tab, then Write to Scanner.
    7- In Sentinel press File tab, then Exit. Any change(s) from Sentinel software are now back on your scanner.
    8-One last task I always do; On your PC, Open File Explorer. Look for the USB Drive. Right-click on the USB Drive and choose Eject. This will “officially” close your USB PC files.
    9-Pull out USB Plug from Scanner to Computer. Scanner will say Now Loading and you should be back scanning.

    This is how I first did my favorite lists. It is easy to find things you want to listen to and append them to FL. But not everything I want to hear is on Sentinel. Some of what I like to listen to is not found in Sentinel so I just make my own FL and add it to Sentinel. For example, a store I go to uses inexpensive handie-talkies to communicate with staff. They are not on Sentinel and not in FCC data base. I found the frequency they were using with the Close Call feature on the SDS 100. In Sentinel you have to add things in three tiers. So for this store, which I will call "Buck Store", I would just name every tier "Buck Store" and in the last tier add the frequency and CTCSS or Color code as needed. When viewed on the scanner "Buck Store" is prominent and i have no trouble seeing it. I do not use quick keys. I toggle this FL on and off in the menu. I do not have to guess what quick key it pertains to. I only have to look at the name and decide if I want it on or off. Thanks again for the video.

    Awesome video! Thanks for taking the time to do this. I live in UT and am thinking about picking up the SDS100 to scan the frequencies down here in Southern Utah. I tried getting an RTL-SDR dongle to work and scan the 800mhz frequencies down here, but unfortunately, it's incapable of reading the Motorola trunked systems our agencies use. I bought it to try out and not shell out the dough for the SDS100, but I guess I'll probably be getting one anyway 🤣. Now I gotta make sure my old Windows Laptop will run the Sentinel software, since I've gone to Mac for the last 10 years. I'm pretty sure my old laptop will run it, since it's either a Windows 7 or 8 machine, but I'll have to do some investigation into that before I purchase the Uniden. I do have a few questions for you: Have you had any issues picking up the frequencies across the state of UT? Also, I heard somewhere through the grapevine (unsure if it's true or not) that our systems might become encrypted here sometime either this year or next year. I'd really hate to pick one of these up and only have it be functional for a handful of months and become a paperweight. Have you heard anything regarding full encryption across UT in the near future? Lastly, have you found that the Uniden's database to be pretty comprehensive and equivalent to RadioReference's database? I'll look forward to your response and hopefully it'll be reassuring enough for me to want to pick one up. Seems like an incredible device and the software appears to be much easier than what I was trying to program with my RTL-SDR dongle on my Mac.

      I used to spend a lot of time in Salt Lake. I’m not sure if I have any videos recording there, but I was able to pick up a lot of police activity in the Salt Lake Valley but yeah, a lot of important things are becoming encrypted, but you can usually get most of the transmission still that I found there. I would definitely plan on purchasing upgrades to the digital when you get your scanner because there’s a lot of digital things business wise there as well that you can listen to.

    Great information. This is what I have been looking for. If I know the ham repeater frequencies, how would I enter them manually like you have in this video? Are the tone frequencies needed to receive?

    • @BoyAndAScanner
      @BoyAndAScanner  4 роки тому

      Hi, thanks for watching. You should only need the tone for transmitting which wouldn't be the case with a scanner so you should be able to receive just fine as long as you program the output frequency of the repeater. I do have some other manual programming videos on my channel that show how to do it manually. Cheers 🙂

    I don't have a scanner yet but I downloaded Sentinel to get a feel for it. I'm confused though. Sentinel says my local police dept. is using NFM. But Radio Reference says they use P25E. When you click update db it updates Sentinel, but never writes anything to the scanner. The update db function works whether the scanner is connected or not. Does it send the new db to the scanner on your next write to the scanner?

      You could delete them off the SD card from your computer I suppose and I guess not update the database when connected to sentinel otherwise they’ll just re-populate. @@BoyAndAScanner Not at all. The Sentinal software is not very intuitive, so a tutorial on the very basics of using it would be useful. For example, when you add a new Favourites List, it comes up with an empty systems list. This allows you to add a new system. It's not obvious to new users of the software that you then need to go across to the tree on the left and click on the new system you created to then create a new department. Then you have to go back to the tree on the left and select that department to be able to start adding channels. Basic information like this would be a great tutorial video for new users for anywhere in the world.
