...but it still has rubber o-rings, that I'm guessing help give it some stiction, but also introduce play. Is this to protect the linkage ring the oe bushing resided in? How does the brass compare to other materials such as delrin?

What if the linkage slides off the o rings?
Why did Subaru installed a rubber bushing? Is it for less vibrations through the shifter knob?
Every manufacturer installs rubber bushings from factory. It's to make it feel smooth and reduce vibrations when in gear. Rubber does wear down quick tho so it ends up being worse in the long run
Nicer initial test drive. Less vibration felt in the hand during a shift and probably a little quiter too. My GTI was super squishy from VW with rubber mounts. I put harder (but not hardest or solid) poly mounts in to several locations and the shifting feel/precision improved greatly; but at the same time N/V/H also increased and then increased more when I ran the A/C. Each material has trade-offs...are you willing to accept more noise and vibration for better feel and precision???
so did you move it to all of the gears?
it was so hard to get that click on hopefully it does come out. no that the shifter move from right to left
