    Jesus! I installed a short throw shifter on my 2003 Mach 1 in about 30 minutes. There are a TON of pieces to this shifter! I just bought a 2016 WRX and I'm thinking the stock shifter might not be so bad after all. LOL

      It's not that bad. I know this is 5 years old, but it's like an hour. Unless you lose something very important, then it takes forever. It's legos dude, everything fits back together the way it came off the biggest hassle is that 12mm bolt in the neutral plunger. One step he didn't mention, is do not lose the nut on the inside of the assembly. He didn't even talk about the nut. That nut is super important, without it, you are fucked. Best to punch out the reverse lockout before removing the 10mils at the bottom. That way when you remove the 10mm nuts and rip the bottom off the nut is less likely to be lost. I lost mine it's somewhere, i just can't find it. Had to walk my happy ass to home depot to buy a grinder, and grind down one of the 10mm nuts to fit in there. It's in there forever now, but it works. If you lose that nut you have to do that, because it's not a normal size. It's the same thread pitch as the 10mm nuts, same diameter hole, but much smaller. You also can't buy that nut, you have to buy the whole assembly which is $200. But you know what you can buy? The 10mm nuts from the various locations. So i'll take improv over that. It only takes a while if you think about it too much. The reverse lockout pin is the hardest. Especially when you dont have a punch. I used a flatip, and when it was too far in, i held an allen wrench with pliers. Snap ring pliers, don't have those. But i got two hands and 2 pairs of pliers. Would have been done in a hour if i didn't lose the nut. With the right tools, probably 30 minutes tops. I put in a billet shifter, but it's the same process.

    This install can also be done without removing the entire assembly. I couldn’t remove the four lower nuts from the shifter assembly, so I removed the two side trim panels around the shifter to provide more room, and proceeded the sub-assembly removal. Was able to access all the bolts. Was an easy install. Seems like a lot but once you get into it, it’s really simple.

    Awesome install video guys!! Just finished the install and this video helped a ton. To the guys that say this is too hard or intimidating, just give it a shot. It's definitely not hard, but it is several steps so it can be time consuming, especially if you take your time like I did. In the end it is totally worth it though as it completely changes the driving experience for the better. If you have the Perrin shift stop you'll probably have to readjust it and the reverse lockout stop to make sure you can still get in all of your gears easily.

  • @mikegarofolo4838
    @mikegarofolo4838 Рік тому

    @billetworkz this is due for an update guys. Biggest issue I found with your video was the lack of info regarding orientation of parts and tool sizes used for each part (ie punch size and socket sizes here and there)
    Also, I had that greasy spring pop out on me when I removed that part of the assembly and had no idea what it looked like prior because I didn't know to check. I had to pause your video and zoom in and guess how the part was supposed to sit.
    I installed the trifecta, weighted knob (thank god cause that plate needs one), short shifter and plate. Night and day difference. Its a little notchy for my taste but not enough to even complain really because it was notchy stock as well. The best improvement was probably from the plate and bushing combo. That completely changed the way it feels to shift. Before it was sloppish (I did have a Shifter Stop installed) and felt like I was stirring a bucket of rocks. This shifter feels the way a shifter should feel.
    Biggest complaints: 1st and reverse can sometimes be hard to get into, but I think an adjustment to the shifter stop will fix that (however in my experience you want it to be initially a tad too tight because it will loosen over time). Also, the shift from 2nd to 3rd was tough at times but that's probably an adjustment I need to make. 3rd to 4th on the other hand is *chef's kiss* 4-5 is good and 5th to 6th is just as nice as 3rd-4th. 1st-2nd is that way too however I think due to the shifter stop being too tight, I'm getting resistance from it. I'm probably gonna miss some shifts for a day or two haha.
    The throw of this shifter is the shortest I have ever felt period. 55% reduction is no joke no to mention the knob sits lower than stock. Also there is more resistance on the shifter while shifting making it feel very tight in travel distance as well as the shifter feel. This will probably become normal to me over time. Keep in mind this is also coming from someone who just took a 5 minute test drive to make sure my car was good to go for work in the morning at 1 AM. Thought I would share my initial thoughts. Hope you take this post as constructive criticism as I don't intend to bash on you. Your craftsman ship is the best I've experienced and I will certainly be looking in your direction for future mods.

    • @mattevans1643
      @mattevans1643 3 роки тому

      It's pretty obvious but...
      The side shift sits on the ball. The 17 mm bolt goes in. The other bolt goes in. Then the neutral plunger goes in. There is a groove at the top and bottom. The grey parts of the spring will sit those grooves. The pin of the plunger will sit in the middle of the white part, you know by looking at the already destroyed surface by the plunger. The 12 mm bolt goes into the nut located inside the assembly, do not lose that nut suring disassembly will have bad time. And that's how that works.

  • @robert23kim
    @robert23kim 7 років тому +7

    installed it last weekend. This would have been so much easier if he finished up the video and didn't forget to install one of the bolts.
    Notice at 6:51 he removes o-ring and one of the metal nuts falls out, (3 nuts on the table instead of 2) you can hear it fall on the table too. That fell out from under the assembly and is used to tighten the bolt shown at 5:33. You can kinda see the nut at 6:33.
    Also pay attention how the side shift assembly is put together because the three pieces could be pain in the ass to put together if you don't know what you are doing.
    Also the shifter now hits the hand brake so I would probably need to upgrade that....

    After installing this I can't seem to fit the shifter stop, I have both a perrin and boomba version and they just won't it shift to first and even if I did get it my 5th 6th and reverse won't work. I have had to just not use the shift stop so i could use my 5th,6th and reverse. Does anyone else have this problem or have the fix? I was thinking of sanding it down a little

    • @mattevans1643
      @mattevans1643 3 роки тому

      No, the shift stop is fine. The adapter you are using needs it to be adjusted. Loosen the two 10mm bolts on the shift stop. I am assuming you are using both shift stops. Find 1st gear. Align shift stop. Find 5th gear, align that shift stop. Tighten down 2 bolts. You're good to go.
      I put in a billet shifter and had that issue.
      I couldn't get into 5th or 6th. Well eventually i found 5 adjusted the shift stop to there. Don't look for 6th because you might find reverse. 5th is actually really close to 3. It works the same way with cars that have reverse next to first. It's just the opposite. In that case you look for 2nd instead of 1st.

    This video helped a lot, but, omg what a pain.
    Around 6:33 the part to remove the bottom of the housing the nuts were so tight it spun the whole shaft (where the shift stop goes)
    Had to drill small holes through the metal and plastic to put a small, 3mm allen wrench in the holes to stop the shaft spinning so I can get the nuts off.
    Should also be mentioned everything will be greasy when finished.
    On reinstall wasn’t too bad but it wasn’t entirely easy either.
    Worth it, yeah for my own car sure but I’ll sell the car with the short shifter if I sell it. I’m not reversing that mod. Most complicated shifter installation I have ever dealt with.

    • @SubiSpeed
      @SubiSpeed  4 роки тому +1

      That is not an ideal and effective way of decreasing the throw of the shifter. The real difference is the length of the lower portion of the shifter that connects to the linkage. On aftermarket short throw shifts, that portion of the shifter has been shortened, significantly decreasing the shifter throw.
      Also, cutting the shifter would cause issues with the reverse lockout.
