      Agreed. I love how he can emote so well, while playing an "emotionless" character. More than any other actor who's played a Vulcan, he has been able to pull off that paradox.
      Nimoy's character choices were absolutely the best of any Vulcan I've seen. Most people play Vulcans as if they were robots, with no inflection or expression. Instead, Nimoy played Spock as someone who obviously has a rich inner life, but just doesn't show much on the surface. So a raised eyebrow becomes something much more expressive when it comes from him.

    • @sandal_thong8631
      @sandal_thong8631 Рік тому +6

      @@CommieApe No. My feeling is that Vulcans were prejudiced against aliens/outsiders/humans. That's why they gave Spock a hard time as a youth: to try to elicit an emotional reaction from him, and why he'd had enough and went to Starfleet instead of the Vulcan Science Academy. Further, his betrothed T'Pring probably didn't want Stonn as much as not wanting a half-human as a spouse. The mistress of ceremonies T'Pau went along with the fight probably because she too didn't care for humans and the half-human Mr. Spock. She probably turned down a Federation Council position because she didn't want to be around humans. Futher, Vulcans didn't want to mix with humans in Starfleet but got their own all-Vulcan crewed starship, the Intrepid, which got eaten by a space ameoba.

    Styles bigotry is interesting and well written. Here is a guy who hates Romulans because ancestors of his fought and died against them in a war that happened a century in the past. When these episodes were written it was just after the century mark of the end of the civil war. Shows the foolishness of holding onto bitterness for things that happened long after the people who experienced them are long dead. Styles never met a Romulan and was perfectly alright with Spock until they learned the Romulans were Vulcaniod, he then had an up close target in which to vent his dislikes. In Styles's mind since Spock was Vulcan and Romulus had obviously been colonized by earlier Vulcanians for some reason Spock would now be more loyal to others of his species rather than to his oath to Starfleet. A simple accident then reinforces this worry in him. This is a condemnation of the foolishness of bigotry and racism, but what Spock is experiencing is Xeno-bigotry the dislike of alien species. Equally stupid and perhaps doubly so as in the Star Trek universe racism and bigotry among humans at least, is no longer a thing. Styles in the end learns his lesson and apologizes to Spock.

In fact he launched into a conversation with the younger men he left behind. Then he began his speech. He started with when he got news of the event with invite, explaining that he was ON SAFARI IN AFRICA when it was delivered to him. This must be strenuous for anyone of any age.

    The crewman was told in no uncertain terms that he was headed down the wrong path with his bigotry, but he was not "canceled". Even though he was initially shown as being wrong, he actually learns something and ultimately apologizes to Spock, if I remember correctly. Aside from the obvious message about bigotry, the other takeaway here is that people can learn and grow, becoming better with experience. Cancel culture is so uncivilised in comparison.

    Imo, Shatner made TOS work. The air of authority he portrayed made everything else believable. A captain with his gravitas could command a crew with diverse attitudes and backgrounds by setting a tone of professionalism. He was believable as someone who could win the respect of his Vulcan first officer, tolerate his preachy ship's doctor, and allow Scotty his dramatic ways. A weaker seeming captain might have appeared to allow his officers to behave less then professionally, while with Kirk's demeanor, you could tell he put up with it only so long as they were effective at their jobs. Kirk was also believable as someone the redshirts would follow on an away team through the gates of hell. Shatner was perfect in the role.

    An absolute master class on work ethics in 55 seconds. Kirk realizes there's an issue and walking around the console taps the crewman's workstation letting him know to keep his mind on his work, subtle with no spoken admonishment but direct. Then when the crew member speaks out, Kirk suggests he meant it as a compliment allowing the crewman the chance to save face and avoid admonishment. And when the crewman again stands his ground, Kirk lets him know in no uncertain terms that his bigotry will not be tolerated at work. But he did not tell the crewman he was wrong or couldn't feel the way he did or try to change his mind about Spock. He tells him to keep his personal beliefs to himself. And in doing so did not give the crewman any means to defend himself or his ideals and no claim that his personal beliefs were being denied. An absolutely brilliant scene.
