God I miss the Summer of '83. I was fresh out of high school, working in Texas, staring at MTV like it was the greatest thing to hit this planet, and yes, Rick Springfield's Living in Oz was a part of it!
Rick Springfield was and is My Favorite Rock Singer! Very underrated as a Songwriter. Great Guitar Player and Performer! I love all his albums. He progressed as a Songwriter and Musician on each one. I saw him in Concert with Till Tuesday in Portland, OR, August 1985. Great Show! His Songs were the Soundtrack of My Life in the 1980’s! Thank you Rick for all the Great Music!
He is a solid musician....and a very smart guy...I think in the 80's his musicianship and intellect was overlooked, because Rick Springfield had 'The look.'
yumha38 I agree, granted I was born in 91, they way my mother speaks of Mr. Springfield is that he was hot so it didn’t matter how he sang. As a man I can say he is quite the musical artist.
I loved Rick Springfield back in the day. I bought several of his albums(33s) and played them often. He is very underrated. He is a great talent and made great music. I’m 53 now and still a fan of his.
He's a good guitar player as well. You must have grown up in the 1980s. Those were the days!! I wish I could go back to those days because people are so uptight now and I live in the southern USA and thankfully people here are more low-key..
I'm so pissed that the media labeled Rick Springfield as a one hit wonder (Jessie's Girl). That was a great song, but he is NOT a one hit wonder. This song, among his many great songs, is the case-in-point. Even his music videos are so unique, and it compliments his songs so well.
If I figure right, it probably is the same media that said that Star Wars (1977) sucked and was horrible!! Looks like the media of the day really sucked!!
Rick Springfield makes great "top down" music. The kind of music you play full volume on your car stereo while driving down the highway with the top down.
I love you with all my heart 💙 hold you close to my heart 💙 always on my mind 💙 Forever in my heart 💙 Angela 💙 Canalejo 💙 your Angel 💙😇 I'm the right one for you 💙
Souls by Rick Springfield was showing on the Facebook page of fellow author and friend John Tucker as the last song he listened to on Spotify before his death earlier this week. As I was scrolling through my favorites on UA-cam, there it was. This time, I'm playing it for John. R.I.P., my friend.
Rick was awesome... this was by far my favorite he ever wrote... classic. I don't know why some of you are saying he was a one hit wonder.... he never was and he's not even listed as a one hit wonder. Were any of you even alive in the 80's?? I was I was a teen then.
dtvguy ishere I absolutely loved him when I was a kid! I know all of his songs lol. I've seen him twice. My cousin has seen him multiple times and has met him many times. He even sat on her lap once lol 😂
Very cool, so then you like alot of us can appreciate him and all his hits.... My older sister was in love with him... LOL.... Living in Oz was my favorite album he wrote.
THIS IS UNDERRATED...went to #23 on the charts in late 83/early 84...WTF?? GREAT MUSICIANSHIP...songwriting...etc...why didn't it crack the TOP 10 at least? Mystery to me...radio play over America for sure...MTV play, etc...but again, WTF??? Rick S is a GREAT SINGER/Songwriter/Performer....etc.....c'mon...give him his come uppance...
Yeah. It was on MTV a lot back then. He had gotten a bunch of hits by then, but not always top 10. Just as a song though this compares favorably with many of his bigger hit songs. In retrospect, teen pinup image aside, songs like this were possibly too rocking for many top 40 formats of the time but is an excellently played tune with an amazing guitar solo.
It all started here, she was a girl from the mid-west He was a stranger in a strange land Same old story, He came for the glor-y She came looking, for a young man's (hand------) But they found bright lights, Endless nights And men just used her innocent ways He found it all so pretty, hypnotized by the city They lost sight of the reason, They lost count of the days And they were [A] (Two souls, searching for each other) (One-- spirit, looking for the other) Caught between a hard, Hard place and a rock [B] (Two-- souls, searching for heaven) (Rolling the dice, looking for a seven) To the tick, tick, ticking of time Gotta beat the clock Too many nights on the ledge, He acquired a knife and Still the city didn't acquiesce to his demands Some nights she cried for pity, in the heart------ of the city The city smacked her (hands----) He met her one endless night, Her eyes had a light There was something familiar about the smell of her skin He held her tighter and tighter, As he danced inside her (She knew from the moment that she let him in) (They'd been) [A] [B] (Beat the clock) (Beat the clock) (Beat the clock) ********* [19 guitar solo] Yeah! How come I have never seen him at any of the "music" awards shows? I guess because he makes REAL music instead of the crap coming out today that is called "music"
I believe that Rick Springfield should be in the RRHOF for sure. Good songs throughout the 70`S, 80'S and up to now. Great singer and great guitar player.
I've always liked Rick Springfield, I remember when he got his big break in the early 80"s it was no doubt he was gonna succeed! just look at all those Pop Hits Like this one here!!! Rick Springfield deserves more credit than he gets!!!
Katherine Fuqua it aired on Friday Night Videos on 10/23/83. That's a thing I know and now you do too. That was a big Fall for me and I remember things like that. All the Right Moves, Dead Zone and The Right Stuff were in theaters that week too.
Living in oz was good. I however guess I'm just spoiled on his earlier stuff. My first solo album of his was comic book heroes. My cousin bought me working class dog for Christmas that year along with a record player( yes I just told on myself lol) and the following summer my step dad called Rick's music faggot rock.. needless to say I stood up to my old man and lost both to a fire pit.. I've since gotten them on CD of course, but vinyl just seems so much better..
Good morning rick I remember watching Judith Durham state funeral services Don't you think you should but Judith Durham and the seekers into the rock and roll Hall of Fame to
Crazy that this guy at 70 still sounds good as he did back in the 80s. Ive gone down the rabbit hole of Springfield music videos due to his recent funny version of Human touch, " No Human Touch " a couple weeks ago. Souls is one of my favorites. I'm 32 and grew up in the 90s and early 2000s, I grew up in the wrong decade! Lol
My first concert at 17 was The Beach Boys, Three Dog Night, Pablo Cruz, Jan and Dean and Rick Springfield who stole the show at the Queen Mary in Long Beach 1981, saw Rick again in the early 2000's,
I literally lived the lyrics of this song back in early 2000's. Beside that, this song is expertly written and the guitar solo is fantastic with that drum beat behind it. This is by far my favorite Rick Springfield song.

Fresh out of college here but same thing 82 83 84!
OMG I was hoping they'd end up together!!!! way to make the suspense last till the last second.
This man needs to be inducted into the rock n roll hall of fame.....people go vote...i did =)

Michael, I saw him on that same tour shortly before you, here in Michigan! The Tao tour and Til Tuesday sang Voices Carry. It was my first concert. :)
Forty years ago, Souls were sold when this song was released. Rick Springfield is truly an Australian genius.
Awesome guy. Love him since the 70ties and I‘m so happy he is still with us. 😍😍😍
Great lyrics...two souls, one spirit looking for the other. Two souls searching for Heaven. Rick must have been a deeply routed spiritual man.
I love Rick Springfield ❤️🥰😎💕🎸
I still blast Rick's music from my car as much at 54 as I did when I was 17 - friggin awesome musician

The 80s definitely rocked, if I had a time machine, I'd go back and hit rewind everytime we hit 11:59 on new years 1989......
In the early 80s Prince was singing about 1999. For what it's worth.
Rick is one of the best male rock artists of the 80's ...high power high class rock !!
The 80's and Beyond he is very Relevant and Bad A$% Today! Performing Sell out Tours & Shows throughout the Decades.
Love Rick ever since.
Wow omg I forgot this song! omg!!
Seriously? He is not in the rock and roll hall of fame? Incredible musician!!! And awesome person!!!

Rick Springfield was so underrated. His songs were awesome.
I think Jonathan Jackson should return to GH and reprise the role of Lucky.
I wouldn't be surprised if Rick and Jonathan are helping with writing the music for Josslyn and Cameron. It's just a feeling I have
Agreed
I agree he was a great artist

Born Richard Lewis Springthorpe. Rick hit #23 in Billboard, 12-3-83.

It all started here, she was a girl from the mid-west

Same old story, He came for the glor-y

But they found bright lights, Endless nights

He found it all so pretty, hypnotized by the city

Caught between a hard, Hard place and a rock

(Rolling the dice, looking for a seven)
To the tick, tick, ticking of time
Gotta beat the clock
Too many nights on the ledge, He acquired a knife and
Still the city didn't acquiesce to his demands
Some nights she cried for pity, in the heart------ of the city
The city smacked her (hands----)
He met her one endless night, Her eyes had a light
There was something familiar about the smell of her skin
He held her tighter and tighter, As he danced inside her
(She knew from the moment that she let him in)
(They'd been)

Awesome song !
One of the best axe solo's ever, off the cuff delivery and an incredible tone. Tim Pearce is sadly so underrated as a rock/pop legend.
No question Tim was the secret sauce...a monster player...his sound is incredible throughout Living in Oz.
and an active UA-camr much later on :)
