  • What are the 10 prettiest towns in the county of Buckinghamshire? To determine this, I visited them all. Here's what I found out.
As a disclaimer, this list is neither a social commentary, nor a guide on which are the nicest towns to live, but purely a judgement on the aesthetics of each respective town centre.

I live in Princes Risborough!! I hadn’t expected to see it featured but I guess it’s always easy to overlook the place one lives in. Great video, thanks.

Thank you! And yeah I think it's quite common for us to feel a bit more on the glass-half-empty side about our own area.

I’ve driven through PR many, many times down the years and it’s always a little sad to see what has become of the British Legion building. Still a nice looking town though.

I grew up in Beaconsfield. It’s only about 25 miles from the center of London but it’s surrounded by fields and woodlands due to the Green Belt.

On my manor now, excellent review of the towns, Thankyou, Sadly, Aylesbury and wycombe were mostly destroyed in the 60,s.

Excellent video as always. Just one thing to mention, I don’t think Beeching should be singled out for the closing of Railways in past decades, he just wrote up the report, Ernest Marples is the man who signed off the closures and what a surprise he had some large investments in motorway building. Keep up the great work.

I agree, there were multiple bad actors who let it happen. Also, the fact that so few stations have been reopened since is another scandal all in itself. But Beeching is the obvious target for blame after all.

🇬🇧 We stayed in Taplow by the river Thames last week. Lovely.

Great video Alex, Princes Risborough is my local town, so nice to see it featured. Can't argue with the list either, although I'd consider Chesham as just sneaking on and may not have place Marlow quite so highly.

    Enjoyed your video.
You mentioned the lack of riverside walks from Marlow..... Sadly the closed footbridge at Temple hinders this from Marlow, towards Henley - blame the Environment Agency for that. Slowly locals are responding and pressure is mounting. Therefore I am sure we will be able to cross the river to continue along the Thames path soon!
Once that happens be sure to return and put my hometown in first place where it belongs !

I really enjoyed this video. It was lovely to see a little of Newport Pagnell - I have just discovered a family link to the area. Bucking Hampshire looks like a beautiful county. Also - appreciated your Winslow - Eagles comment!😀 Thanks for sharing your great work! 🇦🇺

I'll be visiting Newport Pagnell in 2025. My first great grandfather in America came from there in 1639 to Yarmouth Plymouth.

Aylesbury became the county town of Buckinghamshire in 1529, Some of us in Buckingham are still a bit pissed off by this.

Marlow lacking riverside walks? It has a towpath which runs along the Thames towards Henley-on-Thames on the Buckinghamshire side & in the other direction, under the famous bridge-both directions outstanding for beauty & historical interest. I guess, beauty (& interest) is in the eye of the beholder.

It’s been interesting to hear your thoughts on Beds and Bucks, as I’ve lived there.
    Have you completed Herts yet?
I did have a short spell in W.Mids which obviously had some very interesting Black Country history, but I have been very fortunate to have lived over 30 years in S. Devon.
Please let me have your list as it stands, and update me as you finish them off.

Chesham is such a beautiful place, I don't know why anyone wants to live in London when you can live in one of these villages/small towns surrounded by green and forest.

Loving this series. But one disagreement here. I would say Stony Stratford should be in the top 10, and pips Newport Pagnell for a start.

You said it was a beauty competition but the winner was praised mainly for social/political reasons. I have never been there and the only thing I now know about it is that it has a pretty block of town houses.

    • @AlexinGreatBritain
      @AlexinGreatBritain  2 місяці тому

Yep, stone listed buildings as far as the eye can see. My comments regarding Amazing Grace are purely incidental, as it seemed rude not to mention it - especially given the media blackout on Britain's role in abolishing the slave trade.

@@AlexinGreatBritain Thanks for the reply, I forgot to mention the most important thing, I thoroughly enjoyed the programme. The point you mention is a valid one and I will certainly visit it in the future along with Marlow which looks fascinating.

    Loved it… Olney is wonderful.
However, one quibble…you can’t call Milton Keynes ‘Americanesque’! Quite the opposite! I know it’s modern, but try walking or cycling around an American city…it’s impossible (safely). Besides Americans hate roundabouts, and they don’t have the copious amount of green space that we have. Get away from the boulevards. Apart from Newport Parnell, you could explore some old villages that are now smuggled into the larger Milton Keynes.

I lived and worked in Amersham from 1970 to 1978. The description 'old' is unofficial. The cricket ground at Shardloes is one of the pretties in England. The train station is at Amersham-on-the-hill, which can be reached via the churchyard and Ruckles Feiild, a path through a wood. Ruth Ellis was laid to rest in the churchyard, the last woman to be hanged for murder in 1955

I'm looking to move to Buckinghamshire to study an MA course at NFTS in Beaconsfield. The university recommends High Wycome for affordable rent however I want to expand my options (mainly because I want to avoid living in a five-bedroom houseshare which might be dominated by first year BA students). Does anyone know a town in the area which would best accomodate a focused MA student on a budget? I appreciate nice scenery, local businesses and would need good transport links to Beaconsfield.

    • @ZarrarOneNiner

Aylesbury and Amersham are decent and fit your criteria of good transport, local businesses and scenery, but are more expensive than Wycombe.

Just a reminder that the words of 'Amazing Grace' speak of Newton's conversion to Jesus Christ , of which the desired abolition of skavery was a consequence....and not the reason for this wonderful and timeless song , and the message which it so beautifully puts across to and for us today 🙏🙏

    It's pronounced Oney, not oLney!
    The L is silent.
