Why Are Welsh Cities So SMALL?
Have you ever wondered why the cities of Wales are so small in general? Being home to two cities that could be mistaken for villages, as well as five others which, for the most part, don't quite size up to their counterparts in the rest of Britain, we take an in-depth look at the seven cities of Wales, and attempt to establish if there's a reason for their diminutive nature.

I suppose this makes sense considering the Normans' much more heavy-handed subjugation of the north.

Got to agree with my fellow Suffolk folk that Sudbury was an absolute shocker to see as number 1. I actually said ‘Bloody Sudbury!’ Out loud, when you listed it as number one. As others have said, It has to be Woodbridge. Nice video anyway - really enjoyed it. :)

Truthfully, there is only really one place in Wales that can be called a city and that's Cardiff. I was born and raised in Swansea, but consider the city proper, no more than a big town surrounded by other smaller towns. Most of Wales's cities are mostly ecclesiastical or basically the largest population centres in their respective areas, even if a city they do not make. Wales is largely unurbanised and the interior up to North Wales is a handfull of people and some sheep, so outside of Swansea to the south east border, Wales is just fairly rural, a bit like Ireland really.

Great video on my nation, the one i'm very very proud of. I will always be proud to be a Welshman, born here, live here and will die here and i'm happy to live in the county of the capital of North Wales and now the forth biggest in the country. Up until 2022 my nearest city was St Asaph with is 29 miles away from now the new city of Wrexham but very still a big and very old market town at heart, Diolch yn fawr

I’m Texan and I am completely ignorant on stuff like this. how fascinating. anyways i’ma linguistics fan or enthusiast and a history fan too so I enjoy anything like this. Watch a few of the linguistics ed channels, and there’s a fantastic American podcast called the History of English where he’s a lawyer by trade but he started the podcast as a side gig and does deep dives on word origins and well, what’s an etymology podcast on English without honoring our former tyrants😂 haha jk but I do enjoy it and I am glad this one came into my feed. Next question as I am a highly distracted person is, ok, so then how did chip come to be a verb like I am chipping away at this stone, and how did it come be like potato chip and or other usages for the word chip? are those related to ‘market’ also? I must ponder and contemplate this.😅

4:31 That was my daily entry to school. The school buses dropped off on the drive up to the old abbey gatehouse. The posh bit of the school was built over the _lady chapel_ of the Abbey, and once a year we were allowed to visit the plastered painted chamber. I was there for the millennium of the foundation of Ramsey Abbey, when I was introduced to the Archbishop of Canterbury. 4:50 The school bus, which picked me up near home in Hemingford Grey, passed through St Ives ("sənoives"). In those days there were sheep and cattle stalls and a weekly livestock market. There was an abbattoir in Meadow Lane, where I spent a few weeks during a University vac job. I also had a trip on the train from Longstanton to St Ives with my Lambretta in the guards van. 7:22 Many is the time I have staggered home across that bridge after spending a few hours in the _Royal Oak_ with the boxer Joe Bugner who lived first on Needingworth Road, then near Wyton. He and his trainer, Andy Smith, would pop in for a jar or two on a Saturday. Later our allegiance shifted to the _Oliver Cromwell_ which had better lockins. I also drifted down the river unconscious - but not because of alcohol. I was sculling (St Ives Rowing Club) and a poorly coxed four in the opposite direction (towards Hemingford lock) was on the wrong side, raised blades, and hit me and the back of the head. I came to in the river. 7:57 The Great Whyte. As a sixth former chums and I would pop into pubs along there. We moved to Hemingford Grey in 1968 from Yorkshire, and I was deeply saddened when the historic county was obliterated a few years later.

I was born in Bournemouth, Hampshire! I am still, after all these years getting over that it is in Dorset! The nursing home where I was born is only several hundred metres from the old border with the County of Dorset! That was a close thing! Worse still Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch are now one administrative area. This means that County Gates (Poole) are no longer on the boundary! Bournemouth is only 214 years old, so wouldn’t feature amongst your very interesting towns, our favourite being New Alresford. Living 18,908 km’s away, it is easier to think there are less than 60,000 people in our area of Marlborough, which is a Unitary Authority!
