England's PRETTIEST County Border
What is the prettiest border between two English counties? Having travelled most of the country, I present to you my answer in the form of a virtual tour, zigzagging through nine different towns as we trace the route of the border, albeit loosely. Note that the focus is on border towns specifically, rather than natural landscapes such as hills and mountains.

Why Are Welsh Cities So SMALL?
Переглядів 3,9 тис.Місяць тому
Have you ever wondered why the cities of Wales are so small in general? Being home to two cities that could be mistaken for villages, as well as five others which, for the most part, don't quite size up to their counterparts in the rest of Britain, we take an in-depth look at the seven cities of Wales, and attempt to establish if there's a reason for their diminutive nature. All video footage i...

England's STRANGEST Historic County Border

Perhaps the most dramatic was that of the county of Lancashire, which once featured its very own exclave in what is now Cumbria. In this video, we explore the four main towns of this fascinating area that was once cut off from the county to which it belonged, and discover the story behind these bizarre borders. All...

England's County Flags EXPLAINED - A Complete Guide
Knew it was going to be norfolk and suffolk by the roadsign declaring “Nelson’s County”, albeit blurred out, and rightly so, all those towns are close to each other and well worth exploring if your in the area, with rich history and varied architecture, and all the wildlife in between in the fields and air, whats not to love about that border!
Thanks
That's very kind, thank you! :)
Havering-Atte-Bowyer is a similar village complete with a village green that comes equipped with stocks. I couldn't quite believe a place like that could exist within the boundaries of the London Borough of Havering which is mostly very urban/suburban and maybe a bit run-down. But in General this edge of North East London is a place where London rapidly runs out of steam and becomes suddenly rural, at least superficially. That edge approximately runs from Havering to Chigwell Row and Chigwell onto Chingford. It's quite unlike much of London which doesn't suddenly stop. Typically London seems to go on and on (and on) seemingly never-ending. An example of this is almost the entire stretch along the A13 from London to Southend. It's pretty much built up all the way .
Great video! I think Long Melford deserves a shout. Lovely place steeped in history.
All these cities are cleaner than any usa cities
Great video! Ongar is worth mention i think. A lot of history there too
Thanks, yeah Ongar's nice too!
Walking along parts of the Regents canal you could be in rural Nottinghamshire.
There is also an ancient village of Walthamstow which is situated entirely within the urban area and has one of the oldest houses in London
You mentioned the Cotswolds. I wonder if you'd do a video on the London equivalent, the Chilterns. The only range of downland accessible via the tube (I recommend taking a look at the Chess Valley which is accessible from Little Chalfont).
Thanks, I may do at some point. My dad's from Amersham so I'm familiar with the Metroland area.
LOL! Just because these villages are located inside the M25 does not make them part of London.
It’s the London borough of Bromley
Can't believe Epsom didn't get a spot.
I never think of Chesham as pretty. There’s some seriously bad 60s architecture there.
Nothing compares to the pleasant understated beauty of the English countryside, be it outside of London, or in it.
Correction Chelsea FC has 2 champions leagues the most in London
Man of Kent and Edenbridge resident here 👍🏻 Sucks to be Sevenoaks 😂
I haven't been to all of Kent yet where I have been to it is quite nice like Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells
It won't long before places like Ascot and Bracknell are absorbed into London. The word 'London' is becoming ever more meaningless.
I have had the privilege of travelling to Hayes Grove (in Hayes) for therapy and psychiatry appointments over the last year… there is a Priory hospital near the station in Hayes Grove. It is quite peaceful there and there is a lovely big natural pond, a co-educational independent school and a black and white resident cat that I saw a few times when I went for appointments there. It feels like a fairly affluent area for new families with teenagers or older children but with a sort of ‘Kent’ flavour.
How could you mention the town of Thaxted without mentioning Thaxted's most famous Resident! "Gustuv Holst" the British Composer who actually composed some of the worlds best known music namely "the Planets" known collectively as "Thaxted" because this is the town where he composed this suite of music from. Especially with "Jupiter" being the suite of music that the famous British hymn that has been played at many a dignatories funeral and also is played at virtually every Festival of Remembrance . The hymn is " I Vow to thee my Country "
Not sure how Sevenoaks and Whitstable didn't make it
Brilliant. Pure escapism, without having to escape.
I think Eastcote is not very London
Where is billericay?😮.
Not London
how exactly is it not london?
I did have to go on google maps as I thought I was going mad with my assumption that Hayes was in west London. Shows how London has grown and consumed villages, even with the same names
Great for DOGGING!
Great video.
I enjoyed this one. I've always thought of Bromley as properly in Kent, but then I go back to the 1950's...
This ain't London 😂
how is it not London?
You should check out Harefield, not too far from Hayes. It’s a village but the people there are very much Londoners.
I remember cycling through the area at 8:37 about 2 years ago on a route I named, “The super Kent loop”, yet much of the route was in anywhere but Kent!
There where places like this in Johannesburg 🤔 Not !anymore
The north is cold and inhospitable, there is nothing to do there and the people are awful . Please stay in the south .
Some thirty odd years ago my friends and I would cycle from the suburb of Beckenham out to the areas covered in this your film. Mountain biking was a relatively new form of cycling then and we'd enjoy the network of bridleways and footpaths on a cold February weekend on our machines, stopping for a mars bar on the odd occasion. The best of times...
Southall and Plashet are what I would consider to be 'solid examples', because of mass immigration!
Racist with roblox pfp is new lmao
@jeongbun2386 nah literally😂😂😂
I always thought Northumbria, and Mercia were Angle kingdoms.
This was filmed recently? I live in Beckenham and we didn’t get any snow this year.
Yeah, this was Sunday the 12th of January. I didn't see any snowfall, mind you - just the settled snow.
@ Those places in your film are higher above sea level, they always seem to get any snow that’s going.
Such an interesting video. I mean all your videos are interesting and relaxing, but this gave a different quirky slant of interest. Thanks
Ah, cheers!
Great tour!
Thanks!
@@AlexinGreatBritain Planning to move out that way later this year - will look forward to a drive around there.
Excellent
Mate i have to say this your narration is the best I’ve heard in many a year. I’ve subscribed on the strength of your extremely colorful language. I huge fan from Northern Spain keep up the stellar work.
That's very kind indeed, thank you!
Random fact, Nigel farage lived in Downe and perhaps still does. I’ve seen him when I use to travel there coincidently for the home of Charles Darwin
oh no . A reason for me not to visit now
Ew
@jeongbun2386 indeed
Too many errors, wot no Colchester the capital of the Trinovantes, as recorded in cl 20 BC, and the first Roman Colonia (City) and capital, from 43 AD (became part of Diocese of Chelmsford in 1914, which confuses matters but has had official city status restored), no St Albans a Roman Municipium (City) from 50 AD, no Lincoln another 53 AD Roman Colonia, no St Andrews (Scotland, had a cathedral from the 4th cent. and predates Bangor), no Carlisle the once pre-Roman capital of the Carvetii and guess what a Roman ..., but a Hereford, that received its city status in 2000. There are numerous lists of the KNOWN Roman Colonia and Municipium in Britannia, with their modern names.
At any point in this, did you question whether this was actually about Roman history? Because this was in fact about cities with the longest unbroken city status, but thanks for the insights.
Cities are a Roman imposition on Britannia, they being the ones who introduced monumental architecture, paved streets, civil authorities, civil taxes, writing, plumbing if not sewers, greater specialisation (stone masons, brick makers, tile makers, concrete mixers, ... ), ... to the island. The first cities are Colonia and Municipum they constructed, and RECORDED, many persist to this day, some still using the same streets and sewers, if not a superficially similar name.
@@AndrewRoberts11 Monumental architecture - none of which stands in Britain today, unless you count the Balkerne Gate and other bits and pieces. Paved streets - mainly just Celtic trackways they paved over. A meagre total of four colonias, and all settlements looking like completely homogenous grid-based new towns. Then they started clipping their coins and eroding their own civilisation to the point where they left the island they colonised in disgrace. That's the flip-side argument anyway. I'm not that anti-Roman, but giving them credit for Anglo-Saxon cities is a bit of a stretch.
I used to fly from Biggin Hill when I lived in Bromley. One of my favourite places while going back and forth to Biggin Hill aerodome was Keston windmill. It's one of last 9 surviving windmills in greater London. I always wanted to but missed visiting Darwin's house. I live in Dagenham and fly from North Weald aerodrome (another second world was aerodrome). and volunteer for Upminster windmill.
In Northern Ireland, they have 'Train Stations'!
Are there any white faces there?
White, Brown and Black. Like everywhere in England! 🤗
Bless your racist heart
@ Nothing racist about wanting to live your life free from invasion and fear.
@rolyons You're a good person. A really, really, really, REALLY... REALLY!!! Really... Good person. Really!
Have you been to Copped Hall in NE London or just outside? Fabulous!
Copped Hall is quite nice actually
I'm a London explorer, these places don't feel like London, the postcode is not a London postcode so by my standards, they are not London and as you say, the locals don't feel like Londoners either. Why not explore villages a bit closer to London, Pinner, Harrow, Walthamstow, Teddington?
Every place in London feels different, can't say it's not London as not everywhere in London will feel the same. Postcodes can be funny as London postcode doesn't always mean London sewardstone is Essex yet has E4 as postcode. Postcodes were done on a whim not real logic
Very nice video thank you. When I first came across this I thought it was going to be a nasty anti-immigration video.
ULEZ should not even cover the more rural parts of the Borough of Bromley.
