  • Welcome FLocers (fellow locers and aspiring locers). In this video I demonstrate how to thoroughly wash your starter locs using a stocking cap to help prevent prevent unwanted unraveling of your starter locs. There is no need to go weeks or months without washing your locs when you are fresh into your Loc journey. That is one of the biggest misconceptions about locs is that you can’t wash your locs or that you have to wait an extended period of time before washing starter locs. I would advice you to wash gently and with caution, but there is no reason that you can’t wash your new starter locs the same day that you get them installed if that is what you loc’d heart desires.
    I take you through the process that I have used several times on my different Loc journeys when I was in the beginning Loc phases in order to wash my hair whenever I wanted to. I simply cut a pair of pantyhose and wash my locs through the pantyhose. This allows you to use shampoo and or conditioner to wash and cleanse and moisturize your locs. Using the stocking cap or pantyhose allows for the water, shampoo and conditioner to penetrate down to your locs and scalp to give you a desired cleansing, but keep in mind that you won’t be able to get your locs and scalp as clean as you would if you were washing the locs freely.

    Thank you for this cause I have traditional starter locs and it’s already itchy on Day 3 lol they said don’t wash but I probably can’t even last until Day 10

      It’s a tough battle. I’ve been there before and I know the struggle of trying to listen to the loctician but also knowing the feeling that your scalp is crawling because it itches so badly. Just be gentle when washing and don’t go to town scrubbing through the stockings and your locs should be fine!

      @David Jays Way yes I’m trying to stretch the wash (calendula oil has been helpful) but idk if I can make it to a month. Thank so much for responding to me 🤗

    Hey😊. That looks like a good wash routine for keeping starter locs in place. What's great is that the tools are not hard to get.
    We have a close friend of the family that was embarrassed to go to the barber for a cut because his scalp had a blanket of dry skin on it. I covered his scalp with olive oil for 5 minutes the applied shampoo, gently scrubbed the scalp, then added water and washed and that really helped his scalp. We did that about 3 weeks in a row and he had no more flakes and crust.
    If you decide to try this method, I would love to see it up for review on your future video😃

    I wouldn't really trust the title of this video. I used the method to wash my 2-week old starter locs and had a LOT of them unravel. If I could go back 3 hours and tell myself not to wash them I wouldn't do it again.
    Well made video, but this is absolutely not a 1-size-fits-all method and my experience was that it caused a large amount of unraveling

    • @DavidJaysWay
      @DavidJaysWay  2 місяці тому

      That’s a fair opinion to have. Nothing is one size fits all but this is the method I have always used with my starter locs and it’s always worked. I leave my cap on while my hair is drying because if I took it off while wet I would experience unraveling. It also depends on the length of your hair. If your hair is extremely short or if you go in washing vigorously then you have a much better chance you’ll have unraveling.

      @DavidJaysWay  2 роки тому

      Braid and band is for sure a better method for some! When I had a different set of traditional locs, my hair was too short to braid or twist anything 😅😂🤣 so this was my hair lifesaver!

    Hello my locs were started in a two strand twist it has not been a month yet, would I be able to wash it without it coming untested.

    • @DavidJaysWay
      @DavidJaysWay  Рік тому

      Hi! It depends on how long your hair is and the texture of your hair and how large the twists are. If I had micro two strand twists, they would wash out because my hair is 4c and isn’t coming out of that style. But someone with a looser pattern or short hair may have unraveling.

    • @DavidJaysWay

      I never thought about it that way, but I feel like that would work too and you might even get better coverage all over putting the shampoo on first!

      @PlainOlCourtney 2 роки тому +1

      Will do. And I'm glad u released your wash frequency. I wash every 4 weeks but still feel it's not enough because it's sooo itchy. I'll try 3 weeks, then 2 then weekly to see what works since I'm past the baby locs. Thanks again!

    Can you add conditioner or is that not recommended??
    Washing my starter locs for the first time....

    • @DavidJaysWay
      @DavidJaysWay  2 роки тому

      It all depends on who you talk to. If your hair is very short and you’re afraid of it unraveling, then maybe skip conditioner until you feel like your locs are a little more established. I’ve always used conditioner to keep my locs moisturized with every set of locs, but my hair is 4c and I’ve never had issues with unraveling due to washing starter locs when I used the stocking caps.

  • @lavernearmah439
    @lavernearmah439 2 роки тому

    I started my loc journey with braids one month ago. I am ready to wash it. Will it unravel as much as coils or 2 strand twist without the stocking? I think I need a thorough wash. When I scratch there is dirt under my nails.

    • @DavidJaysWay
      @DavidJaysWay  2 роки тому

      I have never had any issues with unraveling at all since day one and I get in there and scratch and massage. If you’re nervous and want to get in there good you can always try the stocking cap for the first wash and if everything seems ok, go in without the stocking cap on!
