I've made several key fobs and purses with hardware, but never thought about making a dog collar or a leash. What a nice idea. I will make my daughter's dog a christmas present soon!
Thank you so much! I actually thought making collars were gonna be more difficult! I’m expanding my business and starting to create collars soon! It was confusing in the beginning of the video, but rewatching it made more sense to me!
This is a really good instructional video! I’ve always made custom collars for my Dachshunds, but have never made adjustable ones for others. This, along with your leash video, will now be my go-to guide. Can’t wait to make my first set! Thank you so much!
Thank you so much! I have only fabric and webbing and the rings because I make bags but I need a collar and lash for my dog and I found your video. Warm regards from Indonesia.
This is amazing thank you so much. If my nylon webbing strap is 2 inch's long how long should I cut the width of my fabric. Bought all of my materials and very exited to make my dogs collars. Thank you so much!!!
Heya, love the tutorial! When you say cut the strap to the length of the dog collar, is that the collar measurement when fully extended or at the length where it fits your pet?
Hi! This is one of the best tutorials I’ve seen! Do you have any sort of pdf/blog/etc where you outline the different sizes of fabric that you cut out to make the collars? Like a guideline for all the different sizes? Thank you!! Subscribed and saved the video :)
Thanks so much Becca! We actually do have a full written blog post listing the steps and materials used here: www.k9ofmine.com/diy-dog-collar-tutorial/
So you started with double the length of your dogs neck, did you keep all that length or trim it at some point? This was an extremely helpful tutorial, thank you!
Hii! Ty for the tutorial! I made a Marvel collar and leash for my sweet boy! Do you have a tutorial for harness? Plsss send me link if you do! Ty sooo much!
On the part of the nylon webbing where you put the lighter to it. How do you fold the fabric over it so it will lay properly? When I get to that part the webbing shows.
I pressed both sides of the excess fabric ends in a bit at an angle (almost like how you crease the edges to wrap a present). Folded over twice about 1/4" and (cut any excess length here for it to lay nicely. I pressed the whole thing flat so it would be easier to sew shut. Hope this helps!
Can you tell me what type of sewing machine you have? I have been struggling to make dog collars but my Singer Start 1304 model and it can't sew through the bulk of of folding over the fabric when you add the accessories (D ring, slider, quick release buckle. Thanks
Hi, thank you very much for sharing the tutorial. I would like to try to make it, but need to buy sewing machine. What kind of sewing machine is needed to sew this? Industrial machine or heavy duty machine or normal sewing machine can do? Thank you for your advice!
In all honesty, as someone who makes dog collars for a living, this was the most complicated way to make a collar I’ve seen. I understand this may be an easy way for some, but there are far easier and less time consuming ways to make them out there
Thank you so much for the tutorial. Very nicely explained. I just have the problem, that the fabric always makes waves when sewing it onto the webbing. i have tried numerous times. any suggestions?? please?
What kind of fabric did you use? Some synthetic fabrics (or anything knit with stretch) will cause this waving issue more than others. I would stay away from anything slippery and use a woven cotton. What you can do is spend extra time pressing the fabric fold/guidelines so it lays flat. You can also use pins and try to sew a bit slower to control this issue. Also make sure you have the tension settings right on your machine (you can always test out a bit and check the thread on both sides of the fabric). I hope this helps!
It's 1 inch thick, but feel free to choose a different width based on your dog's size (smaller dogs may be fine with 1/2 inch). We used this webbing here: amzn.to/3qb2sEH
Hey Katie - I've had my Kenmore sewing machine for probably 10-15 years. I have no idea what the model is, but I've also had good experiences with both Brother and Singer machines too!
I'm not the original poster, but when I make things using nylon webbing, I take the width of the webbing and times it by 4. If you used 1 inch nylon webbing, you would need 4 inches of fabric. But if your webbing was bigger, you would need more fabric
I’m struggling with the corners looks so messy any advice? Never used a sewing machine so my first try wasn’t as bad as what I thought. Also the cross stitch and locking the stitch so it doesn’t in thread I’m struggling with too
Tips for corners: when you get close to the corner, stop using the machine's presser foot and manually turn the wheel for each of the ending stitches. You can leave the needle down in the fabric, lift up the presser foot and rotate the fabric 90 degrees to see where the next line of stitches will start -- you can always turn it back and add an extra stitch or backstitch here if you went too far. This technique helps with the cross stitch idea as well! Good luck!
Wow this so cool! Can you try to make a harness? I have an English bulldog and we don’t use collars on her so she won’t choke when she pulls on the leash
I really want to make this ASAP but I'm a little confused when you refer to the ends. You sew it all in a long rectangle then you say fold the ends and tuck them in? Do you mean we should have extra fabric at the ends because you said cut fabric to the size of the collar/webbing. I'm just received all the materials...I'm excited to try it out.
I think I figured it out from your comments on another post. I went to your link where you wrote everything out. Thank you. I'm a visual learner but love following instuctions. On your page you did mention to cut fabric 1 to 2 inches longer. On the picture where you talk about the D ring, I was able to see the end of the strap where you folded the fabric inside. (Between fabric and webbing) *crossing my fingers*...gonna try. If I'm mistaken please let me know.
I sourced my fabric from Joann; the hardware came from Amazon. I spent around $25 but this ended up being enough for 2 collars and leashes (for large sized dogs) and I had a lot of extra fabric and supplies for other projects too. I always tend to buy extra material, personally I'd rather have extra than run into the problem of not enough and save it for another project. (You could use the extra fabric for other fun projects like dog bandanas or dog bow ties!)
Is there any type of fabric you shoud avoid when making this?😀 I just got an adorable little pup and if he gets lost i want to be able to identify him by a collar (dogs in my country look really identical for some reason😅)but my only prob is that i don't want to put effort into it but he ends up feeling uncomfortable in it.
I recommend using a woven cotton fabric. It's easy to work with and comfortable for dogs to wear. Any natural fabric is best, synthetics and knits could be difficult to sew. I would steer clear of any fabric with glitter, sequins, etc. that can be itchy for your pup. I love the idea of a custom identifying collar for your dog!
How can you make sure it’s safe enough, including the leash, for dog walks as I would be worried to use them for anything but decorative unless I was certain it was safe?
Hello! I’m interested in making and selling these collars on Etsy, but I must know, is that copyright? Did you create this method? I don’t want to steal any ideas from you!!
At first I was like "oh come on it can't be that bad" but after the first minute I got what you mean. Seems like it's 3 things in one step. Makes it feel like you're missing something at all times.
Thanks! You gave a very clear explanation. My dog's collar came out very well, and it was easier than I expected.
Aw I’m glad to hear that!
I've made several key fobs and purses with hardware, but never thought about making a dog collar or a leash. What a nice idea. I will make my daughter's dog a christmas present soon!
Your explanation of how to assemble the hardware on the collar is so much easier than other tutorials I've seen this is great!!
Your videos are so clear and understandable, which is good for me because I sometimes don't understand stuff
tried it and my dog loves it so cute and 100% strong
Great tutorial, quick and to the point! Thank you!
Nice, great job
Great tutorial! I just cut up an old collar to save the hardware and have a ton of belt webbing - but never thought about covering it with fabric!

Hey! I’m planning to make a dog leash and collar buissness, thanks for the tutorial!
Did you do the buissness ? If yes, how is it doing?
Hey! Have you started the business?
Love it! Thanks!😊

Great tutorial. Can't wait to try it!
THIS IS BRILLIANT! Thank you so much!
This is a great tutorial! I made my small dog one! Thanks!
I love these tutorials so much! Just finished making a leash but I still can’t figure out how to close the ends nicely
She just hurried at the last like if she's gonna miss a train Or something
thank you for this toturial,,it is so great!

Love it!
Thank you for the tutorial:)

Very simple, nice!

Good job!
How did you sew ends od the collar? Did you tuck them inside or not? Could you explain? Thank you
Heya, love the tutorial!
When you say cut the strap to the length of the dog collar, is that the collar measurement when fully extended or at the length where it fits your pet?

I bet you can!

So cute!
hello
could you give me the precise url link where did you get the fabric ?
Do you need to use a heavy duty needle?
Thank you!

Love this video

I’m going to try to make my pup some collars

Hi, thank you very much for sharing the tutorial. I would like to try to make it, but need to buy sewing machine. What kind of sewing machine is needed to sew this? Industrial machine or heavy duty machine or normal sewing machine can do? Thank you for your advice!
I'm sure a traditional sewing machine will work just fine -- no need for anything industrial-grade!
Where did you get the fabric 😍😍😍😍
Online I believe but Joanns is great too!
May I ask what kind of needle do you recommend for the sewing machine?
In all honesty, as someone who makes dog collars for a living, this was the most complicated way to make a collar I’ve seen. I understand this may be an easy way for some, but there are far easier and less time consuming ways to make them out there
Do you have one you recommend?
Thanks
I love this, it's amazing 🥰 I'm just stuck on the ends, how did you close them?
Is there a way I can do this without the nylon webbing?
It just wouldn't be strong enough if your dog tried to get away he would be able too
Hi I just your videos. Is this something that can be done on a normal sized sewing machine?
Yes!
Would it be possible to handsew?
Sure I don’t see why not!
Thank you so much for the tutorial. Very nicely explained. I just have the problem, that the fabric always makes waves when sewing it onto the webbing. i have tried numerous times. any suggestions?? please?
Try using a heavy fusible interfacing. Iron it on the fabric.

It's best to measure your dog's neck and size accordingly.
@@K9ofMine okay thanks
How is the quality of the products used? :) like the buckle, tri-glide and D-Ring? :)
Pretty solid!
Great tutorial, how much fabric do you need to purchase?
Hi what it’s the width of the webbing you are using thxs xx
It's 1 inch thick, but feel free to choose a different width based on your dog's size (smaller dogs may be fine with 1/2 inch). We used this webbing here: amzn.to/3qb2sEH
What kind of webbing did you use?? Lite of heavy??
We used this Strapworks webbing: amzn.to/3a8hsxJ
When my dog pulls the D ring turns around and the leash hooks on the corner, how to prevent this?
Maybe try tightening the space around the D-ring with some double stitches so it can't move as easily?
Hey I was wondering what kind of machine you are using?
Hey Katie - I've had my Kenmore sewing machine for probably 10-15 years. I have no idea what the model is, but I've also had good experiences with both Brother and Singer machines too!
Can u use this for all sizes or if not can you comment the Dimensions of xs,s,m,L,XL
It would probably make the most sense to just measure the circumference of your dog's neck and use that for your sizing!
What is the total length measurement of the fabric which u have taken?? Btw thanks for the video!!
I'm not the original poster, but when I make things using nylon webbing, I take the width of the webbing and times it by 4. If you used 1 inch nylon webbing, you would need 4 inches of fabric. But if your webbing was bigger, you would need more fabric
