Great tutorial! My suggestion is this... If you sell these at fairs or craft shows, be sure and market them as fashion accessories. I had a friend who was threatened with a law suit when one of the collars she made failed (at the plastic buckle) and the dog got away and was hit by a car. By marketing them as a fashion accessory, you have no liability if the collar fails if used as a restraint.
You can still sale them as collars as long as you have stated that your not reliable. If used in property. In order for the dog to be able to break it is by pulling away from the owner and if the dog is pulling then. The dog shouldn't be on a flate collar but ethier a no pull harness, head halter or a martingale. A flate collar is for 1. Dogs who already know who to property walk on a leash & 2. Hold tags. Any dog walking on one needs to know how to heel not pull. She could have fought and won with the fact. That fact that he was using the collar wrong.
The reason I know the dog wasn't property train and ready for a flate collar is if it broke the owner would have been able to control his dog even off collar and not ran off.
Great video. I just made two this afternoon. They're easy to make and so quick and very cute. My hardest part was figuring out which way the hardware was going haha I'll definitely be making more...they're fun because you can see the results so quickly.
I have been trying to make dog collars but my sewing machine just can’t take double layers of webbing, I would so grateful to know which machine you are using in the video as it is just gliding through it. Thank you
Thank you for the tutorial. I love the finished results. I will use this video as my guide to make adjustable dog collars. If some find it difficult to sew through several layers of fabric, just use a larger needle size.
So glad to find this great video - thank you! I'll be making mini's, but a couple tips for wider collars: maybe sew two close rows along each edge to help keep the fabric taut (and from appearing loose and separate from webbing layer) - or even use a fabric adhesive first, then stitching for a cohesive, smooth appearance and durability (?) Also, I see many commercial collars sew down an X within a rectangle formation for strength - an alternative to zigzag, if needed.
This is a great tutorial and my collar came out perfect except for the very last step. Stitching through the layers of webbing didn't look as neat as I had hoped. I have a fairly new, mid level, Baby Lock Brilliant machine, so I'm thinking I need to try a different needle? If so, what size do you recommend for the 1" webbing?
Thank you so much for this great tutorial! Very easy to follow and understand. I also appreciated that you provided links to the materials you’ve used. I can’t wait to get started!
Thank you for such an amazing video!! Such clear steps!! I have a mastiff so I would need the same sizes you’re referencing and I am so tired of the blah collars in the stores! Thanks again!! ❤️ Thank you for including the where to purchase supplies list as well!! 💜
Buckle down also makes seat bealt buckle dog collars they are great even have giant dog sizes! Easy to take off & put on fits well its adjustable. Worth checking out!
This was super helpful thanks! im looking to make my puppy a color because he keeps growing out of them but I think I will also make one for my older dog and even myself!
Really well made video. Very clear and concise. I make leads, you guys call them leashes, out of paracord. They are time consuming and can be awkward but the result is amazing. I’ve given some to friends with large strong breads and the are amazed at the strength. My leads would look great with your collar so going to give it a go.
Great video, but how do you determine the width of the material used. I understand the length, but no measurement was given for the width which would help me greatly as I can cut a bunch of my materials at a time
Ooh! Thanks for this very easy to understand video! I'm a student planning on starting a dog accessory etsy shop over the summer and this would make a unique product, As they are harder to make than a classic bandanna.
Hi! I have a question but I'm getting a great dane puppy soon and I was wondering do I have to get a puppy collar for him or should I get a full grown collar and let him grow into it?
I know aye ha ha.. I wish I had a sewing machine too, but that's thr next thing I'll be getting.. I never once used a sewing machine but I'm going to start. I'll be doing a lot of diy's. do up a few shirts for myself, a dog bed, and I will be sewing a zipper on my jogging pants, I always have a lot of stuff in my pockets and things always fall out. At my father's place downstairs there is a big picture window but the lenght of that window is short. I'll have to cut a curtain drape in half its lenght.
Hello! What sewing machine are you using? Mine always puts up a fight when I'm trying to sew the D ring and the female buckle part. I'm guessing it doesn't like all those layers.
Great video, I've been wanting to make my own dogs their collars for some time now. Where is the fabric from may I ask? Can I use any fabric and do you cut the width / length yourself? thank you in advance!
This is a brilliant video, thank you :) I was wondering if you could help me with an issue I came across .. I decided to completely cover the nylon webbing with fabric rather than just the one side and when I am backstitching on my machine the needle keeps breaking.. I've tried everything and was wondering what type of machine you use? I am starting to think my machine isn't strong enough for the added layer of fabric which makes it a little bit thicker than the one in your video. If you have any tips or help at all it would be much appreciated!
Hello. I'm new to this. I have a question. If I want to just use a standard measurement of dog collars, for example: small 1" 9"-13", Medium 11"-17", Large 1" 15"-24", X-Large 1"-1.5" 18"-27" (all measurements I found on the internet). How do I know what length to use? Your example said a 19"-31" the length of the webbing is 38". What would be my measurement for those sizes? I'm not sure on how you got the 38. Thank you for your help!
As far as I understand it he said (x*1.5)+4 with X being the size you want it to be at the end. So if his is 38 then 38-4=34 34/3=11.3 11.3*2=22.6. So his end result is ideally 22.6 but can be adjusted to be a bit smaller and a bit bigger. I would probably just take the middle between the sizes you want to have and calculate from there.
You lose approximately 2 inches to secure the slider plastic, 1 inch because of the size of the slider plastic, and another 2 inches because of the plastic-metal ring loop. So about 5 inches total. However, the plastic stuff is about 4 inches total, so you only lose 1 inch. So the black belt like fabric (sorry I am pretty good in English but not familiar with fabric specific terms) should be about 1 inch longer than the longest length you want to reach and the coloured fabric 4 inches longer than the black one. If your longest length is X, your shortest will be about (x-4)/2+4 because you can half the fabric but not the plastic stuff to close it.
In summary: If you do it according to his formula: Middle of the two lengths you want = x Length of fabric = (x*1.5)+4 According to my approximation: Longest length you want = X Length of black stuff = x+1 Length of coloured fabric = x+5 Shortest possible length will be (x-4)/2+4
What kind of fabric material can you use? I know ot said cotton, but there are so many different kinds. I'm now to this kind of thing and have no idea what I'm doing, lol. 🤦♀️🤷♀️
Wonderful tutorial! Thank you. I’m going to go get supplies and try this. Did you use a bigger machine needle to get through all those layers of webbing?
Awesome video! I love sewing stuff for our current dog (50 lb shepherd mix), including coats. :) We (my hubby and I) will be getting a great dane puppy this fall from my sister who is an akc breeder. We have never owned a great dane before so I'm glad I found this channel! Any tips I can get would be great! My hubby's already planning on turning our side table into a dog bowl holder for when the pup is fully grown. :)
I was kind of triggered when you started giving the number of directions. It was sounding like an algebraic word problem. 😂 Great video! When I get my Great Dane, I’ll give making my own dog collar a try.
If we are making collars that range from (example: 6” - 8”) should we multiply the 8” by 1.5 or should we find the middle number which would be 7” or use the 6”?
Does it have webbing in the middle or is it all fabric? If it has webbing sew like the one here only lengthen the stitch length. sew first side turn over reset stitch length sew second side doing all of the same preparations for second piece of fabric sew that side down then carefully remove long stitches from first sides stitching. proceed with the rest of instructions, If it has no webbing just sew a doubled piece of fabric use good strong cotton, like upholstery cotton.

Thanks Courteney, glad to hear that you're enjoying it! The supplies can be found in most local craft stores, as well as many online retailers. I also put links to most of the items on Amazon in the video description.
Yes! Loads of dog collars are made with it. The ribbon is very silky and slippery! Just be careful to not place the tape anywhere you need to sew through or it will gum up your needle. Another tip is to make sure the stitch length is quite long, too short a stitch will make the ribbon bunch up more.
Do you use a special needle, or is that just the normal sewing needle on your machine? Also, could I wrap the fabric all the way around the webbing so the color doesn't show on the edges?

I have 4 Danes. I love this!
So glad to find this great video - thank you! What kind of sowing machine is that?
Thank you so much! This was a breeze following your video!

This is a great tutorial and my collar came out perfect except for the very last step. Stitching through the layers of webbing didn't look as neat as I had hoped. Great video! I love the slow pace and the details. Super helpful!
This is a great tutorial! Made two Dog Collars and very please with them.
Thank you so much for the tutorial. Can you use a home sewing machine? Or do you recommend a semi-industrial machine to sew the webbing?
Where did you get the fabric from? It’s beautiful!
Hope they make a great combo!
Best video instructions ever !

Wow, I’m so glad I came across this video. Thank you for sharing! ❤️❤️❤️👍🏻👍🏻

I’m new to your channel. What a great 👍🏻 tutorial very clear even for a non DIY person as myself. Thank you for sharing too
Awesome video!! Thanks for sharing. I have made multiple collars from you video :)
Such a great help thank you ....since its quarantine
Ooh! Thanks for this very easy to understand video! I'm a student planning on starting a dog accessory etsy shop over the summer and this would make a unique product, As they are harder to make than a classic bandanna.
Definitely more to it than a bandana 😂👍
Hi. Can you upload a video on how to make a pvc/coated nylon/biothane collar and leash? And what the materials needed are called?(metal snaps, etc)
What kind of sewing machine do you use
Hi! I have a question but I'm getting a great dane puppy soon and I was wondering do I have to get a puppy collar for him or should I get a full grown collar and let him grow into it?
Great tutorial! Wish I had a sewing machine and I knew how to use it. Lol!
Sounds like the perfect time to learn😉

This was such a great tutorial!! Would love to see more from you guys! Like an over the collar bandanna ❤️ Need to keep busy in quarantine lol
Haha that is certainly true!
Well ima have to buy one cause I don’t know how to sew and don’t have the machine or supplies
What needle did you use on your machine to get through the webbing and fabric?
Thank you. I would just suggest wrapping the fabric all the way around the plastic webbing. It will look nicer.
I love it... but the ring 😍😍😍😍🔥
Love this tutorial. Thanks!!!❤️🐶🥰
What size needle do you use??
on the fabric I can't catch what width you used. Can you help me?
Kiss from Portugal ☺️
Exactly what I was looking for!!! Thanks!!
Hello! What sewing machine are you using? Mine always puts up a fight when I'm trying to sew the D ring and the female buckle part. I'm guessing it doesn't like all those layers.
What size needle do you use in sewing machine? Thanks!
Your instructions are excellent!!! Thank you!!
THANK YOU!!! i will make these for my dogs
AMAZING IDEA !!!
Great video, I've been wanting to make my own dogs their collars for some time now. Where is the fabric from may I ask? Can I use any fabric and do you cut the width / length yourself? thank you in advance!
Great video! Do you have measurements for other size collars? My dog is more of a medium size and im wondering how much webbing to cut, thanks!
Thank you for this video. I will try to make a smaller version for my cat
How do o figure out the width of the material - if I am making a 1” collar do I cut the material 4”
Escelente demostración gracia soy principiante chile
This is a brilliant video, thank you :) I was wondering if you could help me with an issue I came across .. You could try using a heavier gauge needle to push through the extra fabric. Machine we use is linked in the description
Middle of the two lengths you want = x
Length of fabric = (x*1.5)+4
According to my approximation:
Longest length you want = X
Length of black stuff = x+1
Length of coloured fabric = x+5
Shortest possible length will be (x-4)/2+4
Wow, que buen tutorial....
What kind of fabric material can you use? I know ot said cotton, but there are so many different kinds. I'm now to this kind of thing and have no idea what I'm doing, lol. 🤦♀️🤷♀️
Cotton or eco canvas is best
Wonderful tutorial! Thank you. I’m going to go get supplies and try this. Did you use a bigger machine needle to get through all those layers of webbing?
Nope, pretty average one I’d say 😉
Great video!! Definitely gonna make one!! Thank you!!!
Glad to hear that you liked it. We have literally dozens of different collars now because they're fun and easy to make :)
Awesome video! I love sewing stuff for our current dog (50 lb shepherd mix), including coats. :) We (my hubby and I) will be getting a great dane puppy this fall from my sister who is an akc breeder. Great for therians!
Great Tutorial Thank you ❤️
I was kind of triggered when you started giving the number of directions. It was sounding like an algebraic word problem. 😂 Great video! When I get my Great Dane, I’ll give making my own dog collar a try.
Glad you liked it! It was a tricky line to straddle to make sure I was giving enough detail without making it feel overwhelming ;)
How thick is the webbeing you used.
Hello what about the width ? Thanks
The webbing is 1 1/2 inches, and the fabric should be at least the double of that to be able to fold it!
Hi ! How many inches are adjustable per collar? Thanks!
Mine was about 10”
If we are making collars that range from (example: 6” - 8”) should we multiply the 8” by 1.5 or should we find the middle number which would be 7” or use the 6”?
Could you please do a video showing material added to both sides ? :-) My collars all have material on both sides.
On the last part to saw 4 times one side flip and 4 times the other side ?
With the fabric what’s the width say if it’s a one inch thick webbing ? Do you just double the width?
Won't the buckle break if he pulls?
Where do you generally get your supplies for this project? I would love to try this as we are getting a Great Dane in a few weeks and I too am not thrilled by the selection and cost of some of the collars out there. I'm mostly wondering where you get the connectors, adjustors, and the nylon webbing. I'm assuming the D ring would be easy to find at the hardware store and I'm no stranger to finding fun fabrics, but the other pieces I have not randomly seen in my travels through the hardware/department stores. Thanks for creating such a great channel by the way. I look forward to new videos as your training/care tips have been helpful so far. Our breeder also advised us of some of the exact same things you have mentioned (the grooming brush and crate partition for example.) :) Great content, keep it up!
Thanks Courteney, glad to hear that you're enjoying it! The supplies can be found in most local craft stores, as well as many online retailers. I also put links to most of the items on Amazon in the video description.
Courteney Dawson STRAPWORKS!!! They sell d rings and buckles really really cheap (less than a dollar)!!!
Courteney Dawson I recommend Strapworks and Amazon.
What type of thread do you use? Standard polyester? Heavy duty polyester? Or nylon?
Heavy duty polyester 👍
What the width of the fabric that your ironing? I have the length
Can you use grosgrain ribbon for the collar design. Also I am trying to make them for stuffed animals
I've never used it in a collar before but I think it would work. Try it and let us know! ;)
Yes! Loads of dog collars are made with it. If you use grosgrain ribbon, I suggest using double sided fabric tape as well as clips/pins (clips are better with grosgrain ribbon as they dont leave holes) to keep the ribbon from shifting around when you sew it to the webbing. The ribbon is very silky and slippery! Just be careful to not place the tape anywhere you need to sew through or it will gum up your needle. Another tip is to make sure the stitch length is quite long, too short a stitch will make the ribbon bunch up more.
Is there a certain type of needle recommended? or will the basic needle do?
Ashley Bond Use a larger needle (size 90/14 or 100/16) with a sharp point, either a top stitching or denim needle.
How much did the collar pieces cost ? Where did you purchase them at?
Can anyone tell me where I could find that exact fabric design? I like it a lot but can’t seem to find it anywhere
Cool!🙂
Great video!!!
Do you use a special needle, or is that just the normal sewing needle on your machine? Also, could I wrap the fabric all the way around the webbing so the color doesn't show on the edges?
Normal needle and yes you can wrap it around
Really helpful. Thank you!
