WTW, getting out three really popular ones tonight. When they been around for years there is a reason. Good shooting and gods speed to the WTW FAMILY AND FANS. 👍🇺🇸
Hey Joel
truncated cone on the .40 made it flatten. Its dumping all of its energy on a flat surface. Everyone thinking its slow and weak is mistaken. load all three with the same truncated cone and they will all fall short....but do way more damage.
There you go WHO. Have your reloading buddy load these bullet profiles in all 3 and redo it. The 40 is balistcally similar to the old west 38-40. This shows the reason 9mm is dependent on bullet selection. If it doesn't expand, it's going through.
Spot on.
It really depends on ammo...
The Slow and Weak name came about due to the 10mms significantly superior ballistics. He is gonna have to use a seriously overbored rifle to even remotely think about getting thru 1200 (estimate?) paper plates. That’s a huge amount of dense material
@Delta NO. A flat nose round is gonna perform worse than round ball bud. The flat nose would offer more resistance due to the flat frontal surface as opposed to a round object of the typical FMJ Ball rounds
You should try another 40 FMJ, just to see if it mushrooms out again, I think if it doesn't mushroom it may stop between the 9 & 45 penetration. Curious. Thanks..
So, two suggestions:
1) Before shooting, perhaps mark every 25 or 50 plates on the top with a magic marker to have quick eyeball estimate / known number when it comes time to count. That way, you don't necessarily have to start counting from plate #1.
2) once you have found the bullet and counted the plates, write that number on the back of the plate. Do the same for the 2nd, 3rd, all other shots. Then you can use that number as your baseline and you only have to count the plates between the most recent shot and the last shot. Add or subtract as necessary to get the new number for where the most recent bullet stopped.
As for the 9 mm being better than the 40, that depends on how you are judging success.
Yes, the 9 mm bullet penetrated farther but due to the 40 caliber mushrooming, it could be called the winner.
It all depends on if you are judging by the size of the wound channel or the depth of penetration as your yardstick for success.
Just get and average estimate of the weight of one plate... then weigh the stack that was penetrated... divide by weight of one plate... you get the picture...
Really love watching your videos. Especially the ones testing different bullets and comparing groupings. Your videos are just what the common man wants to watch unlike some of the others. Keep up the good work.
Appreciate you watching Bill
Great video. Would be really interesting to see the 350 legend against the ol' 30-30 win. Keep up the good videos 👍
WTW, I love watching your videos, let me say that first. The poor showing from the .40 isn't the fault of the caliber but of the bullet design. The 40 has a flat point while the other two were spear shaped or round nose. The test seems to indicate the .40 is a weak caliber even though if you could measure the foot pounds of the 40's impact we would see that it measures up very well. Also, the velocity of the 180gr 40 paired with the flat nose made it a no contest. The 40 wasn't designed for this test. As for how the 45 faired, its round nose coupled with its slower speed and heavier mass allowed it to keep it's shape. I would love for somebody to make a round nose 40 so you could do this test again. Thanks for making this video.
I would love to see the 9 mm in 147 grain jacketed soft core vs similar bullet construction in the 40 & 45 ACP calibers.
Very interesting results tonight, plenty of plates left over for more tests.
Thanks.
There's definitely 9 mil ammo on the market that'll give 40 and 45 a run for their money that's for sure
Bullet geometry was different on every round , but if you want penetration , then definitely pick up that 9mm round , and if you want expansion , then go with that 40 round .
The 40 was impressive for the amount it expanded, means more damage, possibly better stopping. I would like to see a paper plate comparison between 556 and 7.62-39.
Commi round is more powerful and cheaper.
Bullet geometry was different on every round , but if you want penetration , then definitely pick up that 9mm round , and if you want expansion , then go with that 40 round or if you want a little of both worlds , then that 45 round or similar gemotry bullet in desired caliber .
It's actually what I expected, from my experience a fmj 9 is a rabbid drill bit, this should represent to people how important ammo selection is and knowing beyond your target, perfect example of why it's a good idea to carry HP's over fmj for typical SD especially with 9, On the other hand if you are hiking or something and all you own is a 9 pack the fmj they will give you a better chance at bear defense, I still don't really recommend that but if it's all you got at least pack the closest suited ammo for the potential Hazzard.
I recently found your channel (last month) but I am so glad that I did. I've been following gun friendly channels on UA-cam for almost 10years. Videos like yours are the reason I watch them. Everyday balistics type testing with an entertainment twist. Keep up the great work!
Appreciate you watching
9 mm is smaller and has the faster speed, thus further penetration. But, 40 and 45 caliber bigger and greater "punch." It is like getting hit by a golf ball or a baseball. They will all put you down, it's all about if you can get back up.
wonder if you could core a golf ball like an apple? just thinking of a less-than-lethal option for taofledermaus... :-)\
A golf ball isn't going to go through your lung or your heart or your head. A 9mm will do that. And no, you won't get up from that.
I think the .40 should be loaded more similarly to the 9mm. The popular loads seem to be 180 grains. If the people have determined that 115 grains is the best weight for 9mm, then .40 S&W would probably perform similarly at 155-165 grains.
Only problem with your test that I can see is the bullet profile. The 40 is flat and the 9 & 45 are round so it only makes sense that it didn’t penetrate as deep as the 45. The 9 won because of higher velocity and a much smaller diameter which allowed better penetration.
It wouldn't have beat the 357 Sig. That is virtually the same bullet as 40 but faster.
Yes sir.
Isn’t all 40 S&W flat nosied at least store-bought
@@averagejoe3312 close. a .355 bullet put into a .40 casing. Essentially a hopped up 9mm
@@averagejoe3312 Sort of. 10mm is a .40 with a longer case, .357 Sig is a 9mm bullet with a necked-down .40 case hence it’s speed.
Looking at the mushroom on that .40, I'd argue that it won. But yeah, if I'm trying to penetrate farther, then the 9mm is almost always a better go to than either the .40 or .45. because it's moving faster. Frankly, seems like 9mm might be a good choice for winter carry to get through a thick coat, .45 for spring and fall to get through light jackets, and .40 for summer carry. But I also noticed that both the 9 and 45 were regular ball ammo, and the 40 was a semi wadcutter. That definitely impacted performance.
If you want to get into the new technology, re-do this test with Underwood Xtreme Penetrators (or just the Defenders) in 9mm, 40 Cal , & .45 ACP. They all have amazing penetration and minimal bullet degradation.
Meu calibre preferido,,,9mm e o .45 ,,, parabéns pelo vídeo segue assim 🇧🇷👍😃
What a great vid! I did pick the 9mm to go the farthest. The expansion of that 40 cal is pretty impressive.
I’d love to see the 10mm vs 357 mag with these paper plates (hint hint).
Thanx much, WTW!
🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
That 40S&W surprised me. I anticipated to have it an increased penetration over 9mm due to higher velocity however after seeing the .40 bullet expansion we can come to realization that higher velocity allowed that bullet to open up into a nice mushroom then flatten out
I am so happy that you illustrated the futility of shooting paper plates...
Sounds like you’re gonna have to host one hell of a BBQ with all them extra undamaged plates 🍺
I wonder what the wound channel looks like at the halfway point for each of those. I bet the hole left by the .40 is huge compared to the others.
😂🤣 I been watching the paper plate test for years here but this morning I got a laugh out of it, last night my wife came in griping that the dollar general STILL don't have the cheap plates in stock and she woke up to me watching you shoot at 1500 of them 😁 , I have approx 300 of the bright orange 10"&6" plates I use for sighting and load testing but aside from that we haven't had paper plates in stock around here in a while unless you go to one of the big stores out in town
That is hilarious!!!
LOL, WTW if Your gonna use paper plates for body armor You're gonna be lookin like the Stay Puft marshmallow man... LMAO Great vid Sir!!! Appreciate all You do!
All I can say is WOW 😯 I’m definitely surprised with that performance of that 40 Caliber round.
Those are some tough plates... Never get tired of paper plate videos...
My favorite 3 rounds. Thanks for the info and have a great day. And God Bless you and family ☺
Good to see you getting back to stuff that got you here, and big surprise about that 40 deform 👍👍👍
Thanks for watching Jeff. Hard to get videos out every day and do the "better videos" too 😆
I love that clunk from the GoPro haha you know the cut before the slowmo
I enjoyed the video!
Bigger isn't always better.
Like Ackley wrote decades ago...."Speed = progress".
I agree with you; you still have lots of paper plates so it is time to get out the rifles and see which one can get through all 1200 plates!
Always look forward to you next test!
In the city I carry either 9mm or 45acp for SD depending on the day and what I'm wearing. In the woods in moose and bear country, it's a 10mm with one mag of hard cast lead and one mag of hollow points. I swap out mags in the truck depending on if I'm coming or going.
Again the 40 shows that it's a pretty devastating round. I love that round. The 45 is #1 in allot of ways. But when you have the performance that the 40 gives in a way that is a bit more manageable for allot of shooters, it's a great choice.
Thank you for the video. I would have guessed the 40 to be number 2.
What I just saw was the .40 was far more effective. Why? Because I have never been in combat against a stack of paper plates. I want something that expands violently, stays in the target while causing a massive wound channel in tissue. That .45 with proper ammos will create an even larger wound channel. But if your goal is to shoot through a lot of paper plates the 9mm "won".
To be fair, if the .40 had not deformed like a self-defense hollow point it would have gone through a lot more plates. That is a good comparison of those 3 calibers otherwise!
You should have shot another 40 cal to make sure there wasn’t a anomaly. The round could’ve been loaded wonky or something?
Been working so much i haven't been able to catch the livestreams.
Speed kills. .40 is big and fat (like me), and dumped it’s energy quickly. I believe the 10mm would have traveled a lot farther than the 9mm. Has both mass and speed. Nice deadly combo
yep 10mm or .357mag, I wish he used a heavier 9mm round
I think your right about which rounds will beat the other, but i think they're all stopping sooner than you expected. (didnt skip ahead)
Interesting video, I’ve never bagged any paper plates in my years of hunting so I guess I still don’t know which caliber to use ! 🤔
Impressive for cheap store brand paper plates.... but what about Chinet Classic White Paper Dinner Plates? The commercials around Thanksgiving and Christmas keep telling me that Chinet is a super tough plate.
Makes sense. Need ten millimeter with a pointy end if it exists. Hardcast I hear is the best.
Would not have thought the 9 mm would have beat the other’s. Thanks for the video
I'd really like to see you do a paper plate comparison with a glock 21 with a 460 Rowland conversion shooting 45acp compared with the 460 Rowland.
I'm myself thinking on doing this conversion sometime soon, but having trouble finding a shoulder holster to work with this.
I really liked that video with the pistol calibers but what are the chances you can do 1 on 12 gauge shotgun shells from bird shot to .... buckshot to slug how many paper plates it will go through...?
Wooooo hoooo it’s that time for my favorite shooter to wreak some plates great video as always WTW
Hey Fat Panda!!!! 😆 always appreciate you watching
@@WHOTEEWHO thank you my friend, loving watching your vids keep up the great work
Fun to to see a black powder 44 or 50 cal against the plates
That's what I been waiting on also. And a gell test to.
It would be interesting to see the modern with the 1:24 twist with pellets belted bullets to a hawkens with 1:48 twist and powder and lead bullet 🤷♂️ he hates cleaning guns 😁
What brand of ammo was used for each caliber and also what handguns were used and the barrel length of each would have been good to know all this too..
Would be neat to see the Grind Hard 45 acp ammo tested!
They have a 111 gr copper that is listed at 1700 fps out of a 5" barrel!!!
I love your channel man keep it going
Appreciate you watching Mark
WHO_TEE_WHO: can't wait for deer season
PAPER PLATES: thank you deer season! :-)
🦌🦌🦌
I was surprised at the results. But that 4o made some serious impact on the ones it went through..
That is OK wonder if the 45 will make it through
40 is the correct answer vs human sized questions
The 9mm stopped in 161 bullets haha cracked me up
Just wow, I wasn't expecting that.
Hey Scotty!
The 40 won. Would have done the most damage IMO
Would've on what? That 180gr FMJ most likely won't expand on soft targets
I've watched a lot of your paper plate test videos, so my educated guess is they go through less than a quarter of the plates!
🇺🇸✝🇺🇸
Enjoyed the show!
Interesting as always :) But you should always chronograph muzzle velocities in such tests. Some manufacturers give 10-15% higher velocities than the others and the loads are not even labeled as "hot". Cheers
I’m with you on the 40 Caliber.
I have a good friend that retired from police department and they use 40cal and he said that the 40 was designed to dump all its energy as soon as it hits target so it won’t over penetrate and hit an unknown target on the other side. He told me about a time where he had to shoot a guy and it hit his zipper on his jacket and the bullet dropped into his pocket and left him with nothing more than a big bruise. In my opinion I wouldn’t use a 40cal for home defense unless I lived in an apartment where there was lots of people around me on other sides of walls so I didn’t have to worry about over penetration.
Sounds like a bs story. The bullet design, there are many, is what does the dumping of energy, not the cartridge itself. Even among hollow points, some expand fast, some barely expand at all. A .40 cal to the zipper should push the zipper to your backbone, unless it was loaded too light, (not likely) or he was hundreds if not a thousand yards away when he made the shot. Hell a .22 long rifle at 100 yards would most likely make short work of a zipper and still have enough energy to mortally wound you.
Great comparison thank u nice bing bangs to by the way.
Thanks for watching Justin!
Dope video. Do it again with defensive rounds.
Cant believe the .45 went Thru twice as much as the .40 ! GOD BLESS BROTHER
And that's why LAW ENFORCEMENT,,, switched back to 9mm from .40cal
You WTW, should test the 5.7 VS 10mm VS 7.5,,,,heck yeah.....
Thanks 4 video, WTW....
When I carried, I carried.45. Bear country encourages multiple shots with something that’s gonna penetrate and dump energy. A .454 Casull sounds neat but you only get 5 rounds. My old Springfield XD carried 14. Maybe not as powerful but a lot more of them little .45 ACP
I would love to see a true velocity water jug catch and paper plate test
40 is all about kinetic energy it's made to dump and thump that's why most of it's ammo even in fmj has that flat nose. That's why when I was in law enforcement I carried a glock model 22 and I mainly carried that ammo in it or that same basic ammo with the hp. Like back in the day with 357 you had the semi jacket hp and semi jacket flat nose.
I’m so robbing your house wearing 162 paper plates. Loved this video!
Thanks for watching Paul
i would like to see this test with the underwood 90gr standerd velocity extreme defender..got those rounds for my carbine for deer hunting.
I wonder if a 124gr truncated cone FMJ 9mm (+P, +P+ and non +p) or even a 147gr FMJ would have gone deeper?
I just bought a 9mm pistol and a high point 45 acp carbine. I wonder how far it would go?
As much as I'm getting older and love my 9mm with less recoil, the .45 is the dump truck of the group and best penetrator.
If you have enough plates to spare, would a .357 vs .44 comparison be possible?
Should do the rest of these plates with hollow points to compare!
.40 S&W para eu teve o melhor desempenho na questão letalidade pela sua expação sem + comentarios!
It's the type of bullet fired from the .40 cal, because a fmj would have went way farther, not that it is a good thing since you want expansion with a pistol caliber
If you think about it paper plates are molded tree fibers, so stacking them together could be like shooting a log.
What were the ballistics? FPS? Same barrel lengths?
Great video!
Thanks for watching
Excellent presentation 👍☕😎
Thanks for watching Peter
And that's why 9mm is the most popular round!
I'm Thinkin that the Flat Nose on the 40 might have played a Role.
What speeds were those rated to go? Might be interesting to shoot the next plate test over a chrono and look at the energy in each round. I have some airgun testing I need to do and may very well grab a stack of plates to see how far some of my cast rounds go. Getting 12 to 14 inches deep in a bucket filled with rubber mulch, guessing I'd only get about 50 plates with a round nose 125 grain round (Lee 356-125-2R mold).
Glad to see that video . Maybe you could do 30 06 semiauto vs 30 06 bolt action
WOW - I am equally Surprised! 😳
So, In theory, we are at greater risk of Over Penetration with a 9mm. Who would have guessed?
Well, then again, paper plates don't resemble the human body.
I wonder if a different round from the same box of the 40 would do any different. As in penetrate more do to less or different expansion. Dunno, it might do the same.
Bullet geometry was different on every round , but if you want penetration , then definitely pick up that 9mm round , and if you want expansion , then go with that 40 round or if you want a little of both worlds , then that 45 round or similar gemotry bullet in desired caliber .
30.06?…..what about .38,.357,.44 ? Or one of those hi speed rounds like 5.7 17hmr ?o well great video really was surprised
I always enjoy your content.. 👍
🙏🙏🙏 always appreciate you watching
I feel like you’ve done this before am I watching a rerun ?
Love these videos
Thanks for watching Jim
I'm thanking 300RUM vs 338 Winchester at 100 yards how many paper plates?
Very good idea
Magnum rounds would be interesting ie 357 38 special 45 long colt etc
I carry 9mm's with buffalo bore 147gr +p hard cast and seismic 185gr 9mm rounds..I dont mess with 115 or 124gr rounds
Highpower rifles on paperplates? Cool! .300 WinMag, .338 WinMag, .300 RUM and .338 Lapua would be interesting to see.
The 9 takes it tonight!!!
I like it. Maybe do it with 5.56. Curious to see if I can fill my walls with plates in case the enemy comes a rockin lol
I’m gonna test 124gr 9mm with .38 super and .357Sig FMJ’s. Now I’m curious.
