@@shangtsung1362 idk man. I had em both as hot as you can get and the difference in velocity for the same weight bullet was small enough for an inch of barrel length to make at least that difference 🤷🏻♂️ I don't think people understand just how hot you can actually make a 10mm
Blacktahoe DMan not necessarily, Underwood ammo makes a 10 mm round that’s 135 grains going 1600 FPS. That’s gonna dump all it’s energy fast and not over penetrate.

I thought the .45 would go a bit farther than the .40 , but not that much further. Again , the bullet expansion decreased the number of plates the .40 penetrated.
I'll keep my glock 30s and 45ACP with +P ammo, plus 13 rounds with the glock 21 mag. 45 ammo easier to find, cheaper to shoot, and heavier bullet. Very few walk away if shot with a 45.That's my choice
Great video...The 10mm is a great hunting round. I don't think the barrel length makes that much different. The 45 is the superb home defense round. Your neighbor would thank you for not shooting them.
The .40 mushroomed in the plates. If you are looking for stopping power, then the .40 is the way to go outside of the .45. The .10mm went far, but kinda fast. You don’t want to hit someone and they keep coming. Hence, this is why many turn away from .9mm
I had the order right in my head, but really surprised by the disparity between the .45 and 10mm. I'd like to see all 3 done in a matching defensive round, like the Hornady Critical Defense or Underwood ammo.

I loved the setup and the testing medium. The plates seem to be a really good way to compare penetration. Your setup with the cinder blocks is simple but very effective. I like simple inexpensive things that work well 👍. Great idea. However, as noted by others, comparing these three different barbell lengths makes the test scientifically very incorrect. The controlling variables (barrel length being one of them, the amount of gun powder in the cartridge and the weight of the bullet) were different. I understand that you worked with what you had. 👍💪
Not a fair test for the 40 cal. The P239 has only a 3.5" barrel competing with the much longer barrels of the 10 mm and the 45.. The 10mm should win and the 40 should be 2nd if a proper test was done.
I’ve always been hesitant to use a 10 for carry for this exact reason. . Great hunter but not so good in a situation with lots of possible unintended peripheral damage. The bad guys of course don’t care who or what gets hit but we are responsible for every single round,no matter where, what or who it touches. Great video, keep ‘‘em coming!
Adam Headrick 10mm is closer to 44mag than 357. It’s right neck and neck with the 41 mag on average, but some companies make 10mm that will rival if not surpass the average 44mag.
Appreciate the video, very interesting, but if you don’t use actual “10mm” ammo, your findings will be close to the same as the 40 caliber where normal loaded 10mm is around the same heat as 40 cal.
Not surprised at all. 1. The .40 had a severely shorter barrel, of course less power/penetration. 2. The 10 mm was always gonna penetrate more. 3. The 40 also was the only slug to mushroom, IDK why that was. For a true test of penetration ability, use same type/brand of ammo (all fmj or wadcutter) and same barrel length.

Good job. The 10 mm doesn't surprise me one bit. They're a hoss. Understandably there are several complaints about bullet weight and barrel length. IMO it is much easier to put rifles on a more level playing field than it is differently calibers of handguns., JMO. I do know however that you try to use the most commonly bought ammos so that "out on the street" these may be pretty representative of real-world situations. Either way - thanks for your time, trouble & expense.
There’s a lots of videos of people trying to put holes through entire stacks of paper plates. I’m not exactly sure why they want holes in their paper plates, but if I was the owner of a paper plate company, I would start producing paper plates with holes already in them. People would buy them. Especially this guy.
So what I’m getting from this is a 10mm is overkill unless your hunting big game or packing for Bear. The 45 seems just right. The 40 was underwhelming as far as penetration goes.
It's a 180gr out of what looks like a three inch barrel. It's whats expected. Buffalo Bore makes a a 135 grain 40 s&w that travels at almost 1400 fps with around 500lbs of force out of a 4.5 inch barrel. Not much a fair test.
The 10mm and the .45 ACP both penetrated further, however, the .40SW had more expansion than either of the other two rounds. Can something be said for the stopping power of the .40 if there's more expansion of the bullet through less plates?
Before the first shot was fired, the first thing that popped into my mind is the 40 caliber gun had the shortest barrel. That gave me a Feeling that it was going to have the least penetration. I think to be fair the same length barrel, the same style bullet and if at all possible the same brand of gun. To make the test accurate. Penetration definitely affected by the shape of the bullet. Round nose, flat nose and so on. Lastly do I want that much penetration? Depends on what I'm shooting and where.
The .40 and 10mm are high pressure rounds, a more comparable round in the .45 would be 180 / 185 gr ammunition with a comparable pressure loading / muzzle velocity. BTW Just for info......should SHTF there will be more 9mm and .45 ACP ammo around....just like 5.56 and 7.69 ammo for long guns.
Before this test I had considered a .45 for home defense. Now I will look at 10mm! I just hope the intruder is wearing less than 6" of paper plate body armor!
I have both a 10mm and a .45, for home defense I prefer the .45 because short fat and slow won't overpenetrate. 10mm is a great round to hunt with because it hits up in the range of magnum rounds. If you want a nice wound cavity 10mm will make a nice one though.
I have sturdy stick for home defense. So far, I only used it on the battlefield (I used to be a medieval re-enactor, and a stick is a lot cheaper than a sword).
Thomas Raahauge Nice sticks can do plenty. I have a copy of Charlemagne's sword but I never really considered it for that use. Now a Louisville Slugger wrapped in barbed wire....Lucille!

I'm glad you used the 10 mm in a 1911 plat form. The 10 mm in a 1911 is one of my favorates. The Colt Delta Elite was my first hand gun and still is my favorate handgun. Finally had to retire it (safe queen) and bought the Rock Island Enhance in 10 mm because after 500 plus rds the front sight (pinned on) on my Delta would always pop out and hit me right in my forehead. Frank The Rabbit the Colt is a treasure for sure....but I doubt you'll hurt her with just about any commercially available "normal" ammo. Lord knows, I've reloaded and fired some *SERIOUS HEAT* in mine (almost ruptured and deprimed cases came out and flew really far away!💥😮). One upgrade that Colt made to help the Delta platform handle the increased pressure and increased slide speed of the 10mm was a stronger spring AND they removed to top of the circular cut in the frame that the slide release passes through.....this allows for frame flex necessary to reduce (eliminate?) the cracking of the frames that was the initial problem with some (during excessive training sessions with the secret service for which it was developed and adopted by). Look it up, and check yours with the slide removed....the hole should look more like a "u" or horseshoe rather than a circle. 😉✌️
My next purchase is going to be the XDM OSP 10MM with the threaded barrel. From what I've been seeing it seems to be a great gun at a good price. Awesome capacity and power
The dramatic difference in bullet expansion explains the performance of the .40. Every test I’ve seen confirms the performance of the 10mm, but the question of stopping power is a different question. This test shows bullet selection and intended use is as important as caliber.
I subscribed to this channel after watching this video. I like the basic common sense approach to graphically showing the effects of different rounds. Or maybe this video just made me appreciate my .45 ACP more.
Yeah that was a defense round, the whole point of those is to not over penetrate. Kind of questioning this test a bit. Plus the barrel lengths weren't equal. Too many variables.
WhoTeeWho: speaking as a near illiterate when it comes to ammunition: if the .40 is not a defensive round, is it then an offensive round? And I don't even know if "offensive round" is even the proper term.
@@WHOTEEWHO interesting how it mushroomed and split symmetrical then, wonder how a different manufacturer fmj would run. Still very interesting test. 10mm looks like a beast of a round, I'd get a 10mm next if the ammo wasn't so expensive, thinking 45acp will be my next purchase.
A bit of info, the .45 is a low pressure case and can be pumped up, i have hot loads with a 180 gr Barnes copper bullets. In a G21 with an extended barrel.
The .40 came apart at the seams - you need to validate with bullet designs that do not separate jacket/core. Also, the .45 design mushroomed causing more resistance to the plate medium, but would have delivered more terminal ft/lbs. energy to the bad guy target. Given a fair test of bullet sectional density - construction/loads - the 10 would have penetrated deeper - hands down. Entertaining demo & video!
Barrel length will affect the level of penetration. Even just 3/4 off an inch. With equal length barrels the .40 and .45 would be closer (with different ammo the .40 will sometimes surpass). The 10 would still win.
at this point i think you get into the dynamics of the metal used from each manufacturer. softer/denser etc. the 10mm seems to be more stable. it kept its streamlined shape. the .40 was a softer ball. i would imagine that personal protection would lean toward softer lead, whereas combat would prefer denser lead. no matter what weapon/caliber you shoot.
Eric Laney : True, I use 200g Double Tap, Bear Tooth for hogs out of my Glock 20 down here in Florida. They work good when I don't feel like carrying a rifle and just take the G20. That front shoulder on pigs has a real tough thick gristle layer.
I use hornady xtp for deer and the 10mm rocks them out to 75 yards I've only ever shot 2 and hit both where the neck meets the head and both dropped in thier tracks , honestly I would feel confident hitting them anywhere in the lung , heart , neck etc with full power loads so I could definitely see it dropping pigs without any hesitation
Love the test but have one problem with it. The 45 was standard FMJ while the others had a cone shape. The cone shape will aid in penetrating. Although the 10 should be number one since the velocity should be around 1300 fps, and it is smaller. Great test and thanks for the info
For those surprized.... look at the fps difference as well. The 10mm did exactly as expected since it's closest ballistic tested ammo is .357mag. Though what I would like to see is the same test with the 10mm in both fmj, and jhp... Same bullet weight.
The one that mushroomed the least travelled the farthest, regardless of bullet weight. Maybe another test using bullets that aren't made to deform would show different results.
Use the same type of bullets also. The .45 acp has a fmj round, while the other two are fmj flat nose. They interact differently. The fmj has less surface area, thus it interacts with the target differently.
Full metal jacket is meant to travel through an object the jacketed hallow points are meant to open up once it hits its target. That’s why self defense ammunition is a hallow point usually, but Armor piercing rounds also have full metal jackets.
JonD the smaller the ammo the more rounds u can get of effectively , especially the 9m 17 rounds flush, but anything farther then 30 yards will favor the bigger round

@@Yates235 Both powerful rounds, 10mm and .357. The .357 maxes out a little hotter and harder hitting than the 10mm. 10mm's great advantage over .357 mag is rounds in the magazine vs spins on the cylinder.
@@shangtsung1362 idk man. I had em both as hot as you can get and the difference in velocity for the same weight bullet was small enough for an inch of barrel length to make at least that difference 🤷🏻♂️ I don't think people understand just how hot you can actually make a 10mm

The .40 expanded more than the 10 or the .45. I think that may have skewed the test a bit. Cool though ! I knew the 10 would go farther. wasn't sure about the other two. I thought the .45 would go a bit farther than the .40 , but not that much further. Again , the bullet expansion decreased the number of plates the .40 penetrated.
The 10mm performed like a FMJ which is why it went deepest. The 40 S&W bullet expanded and dumped its energy.
the 40 smooshed too fast, that's y it didn't go far, softer than other 2
Yes.
The bullet type does that. Mussle velocity averages around 1250 ft per second for a 40 cal.
Depends on the bullet chosen.
I'll keep my glock 30s and 45ACP with +P ammo, plus 13 rounds with the glock 21 mag. 45 ammo easier to find, cheaper to shoot, and heavier bullet. Very few walk away if shot with a 45.That's my choice
And now In 2021 I can’t find any .45 acp sadly just 10mm lol
Great video...The 10mm is a great hunting round. I don't think the barrel length makes that much different. The 45 is the superb home defense round. Your neighbor would thank you for not shooting them.
The .40 mushroomed in the plates. If you are looking for stopping power, then the .40 is the way to go outside of the .45. The .10mm went far, but kinda fast. You don’t want to hit someone and they keep coming. Hence, this is why many turn away from .9mm
I’m a big 10mm fan!! I have the one you shot on the test and the 20 and 29 Glock models. Interesting test. Well done
Love the 10mm!
I had the order right in my head, but really surprised by the disparity between the .45 and 10mm. I'd like to see all 3 done in a matching defensive round, like the Hornady Critical Defense or Underwood ammo.
The 10 is evil!
10 mm make 45 acp lk a wimp 10 mm go Thur a level llla vest but not a 44 mag with Ventura extreme defense ammco or extreme penetrater would jell 220 over five ft
👍👍
Great video thank you ! The 10mm has the longest casing. But the old 45 did well
I’ve always been hesitant to use a 10 for carry for this exact reason. . Great hunter but not so good in a situation with lots of possible unintended peripheral damage. The bad guys of course don’t care who or what gets hit but we are responsible for every single round,no matter where, what or who it touches. Great video, keep ‘‘em coming!
I have seen videos of different ammo tests that showed the 45 had deeper penetration than the 10mm did using the same ammo.
Great video I really like the 10mm in a future video how about 10mm vs 357 mag
Adam Headrick 10mm is closer to 44mag than 357. It’s right neck and neck with the 41 mag on average, but some companies make 10mm that will rival if not surpass the average 44mag.
@@PlhPatrick 357 and 10mm are very close in power. 44mag is WAY more power than 10mm.

@Ed Carrithers "Should have". Fixed.
Are you coulda shot the 40 out of the 10 mm gun almost the same bullet the 40 is just a little shorter

Use the same grain bullets and pistols with the same barrel size next time!
This just made my decision easier on getting a 10mm!!
Thanks for watching!
I have both!
You nailed it...
What if you are up against a bear-sized human?
@@curseofthegreat prob need a 12 gauge then.
He pulled the 10mm from the back of the stack and the others from the front. Yet he claimed those were the amount of the plates required.
Depends on what I'm shooting and where.
the 10mm and the 45acp have the same amount of powder pushing the round. the rounds size and point is what makes it have deeper penetraition.
EXACTLY!

Nick Phongsa yes
Cool video, I think we need to use the same ammo, hollow points so we're talking real world penetration
This is why I only carry my XDM 10mm in the woods for them Predators.

Ooooh, those three bullets look shiny!
And the .40 was mushroomed, so is that why it didn't go through so many plates?
Yeah that was a defense round, the whole point of those is to not over penetrate. Kind of questioning this test a bit. Plus the barrel lengths weren't equal. Too many variables.
40 isnt a defense round
Kyle B: It's not a scientific test. WhoTeeWho does it for the #LOL - and that is precisely why I'm here :-D

I've reloaded .45acp since '73 and have pumped out 185 grain hollow points over 1100 f.p.s. It makes the Colt a bit snappy.
Damn, I would love to see what a 10mm carbine can do
did you do 9mm vs.10mm with the paperplates,I cant seem to find it
Not yet
@Jeremy Honeycutt u are acrually wrong a 9 mm is the fastest traveling bullet as far as 10mm 40cal and 45
Barrel length will affect the level of penetration.
When all things are equal it will be 10mm, 40, 45. The barrel length is what held the 40 back, it's velocity was reduced.

The .40 is way better than that performance you just showed. You just really disrespected the .40 cal!!!

Full metal jacket is meant to travel through an object the jacketed hallow points are meant to open up once it hits its target. That’s why self defense ammunition is a hallow point usually, but Armor piercing rounds also have full metal jackets.
.45 has too much mass and moves slow. 10mm is the best round. .40 cal is just a light load of a 10mm for people that can't handle the recoil
