I am a new pet owner and I use the guillotine style. I have a Great Pyrenees and he sits still enough for me to cut his nails. Take not he has a mix of black nails and clear nails. For the black nail I cut the small part that’s hooking out of the paw pad. Then I trim very thinly until it looks good without touching the vein. Either way I like the guillotine style. It comes in handy.

Very helpful vid. I agree you don't want to use equipment that causes any sort of stress or anxiety when grooming a pooch. Especially puppies. A puppies intro to all the new equipment will set him/her up for rest of the appointments in the future grooming room(s). I have a lot of the same nail clippers-trial and error until I settled on a pair that is silent-easy to hold and has no guard. The last thing I want to do is clip a quick using loud, awkward or outdated clippers. Someone gifted me a pair of the guillotine clippers. :( Which were something back in the day, I am sure. Thanks for your insight.

I love my Miller’s Forge small clippers. Lightweight but sharp and effective for years for my Havanese. Good tip in the cat clippers for the dew claw! That’s always tricky. Thanks again.

Can you replace the blades on any of the non-guillotine clippers? Or do manufacturers expect you to buy the whole thing every time you need sharper blades?

Hi Rudy. Thank you for your help full videos, much appreciated. Do you recommend grinder type nail trimmers? And, do the traditional nail cutters need to be sharpened over time? Thank you. 😊🐾

Omg the low quality clipper is the one I've been struggling with exactly.... I got it with a grooming kit and all the other stuff works great but this clipper is loud, the hooks at the end too big for my dog's dew claws, and the guard gets in the way.
Guillotine clipper was definitely one of the first ones I used at home, and I still use it but only for my small dog (Chihuahua mix) who doesn't tug. Relatively quiet, too, which is nice. On my poodle/bichon, it'd be too riskly to put her nail in the ring when she could pull away and accidentally hurt herself.
I'll definitely check out Top Performance for some clippers that will hopefully give my bichon a better time!

I have the Miller's Forge clippers for my Golden and they works very well! Can you please explain how to tell if the blades are getting dull and when they do, how to sharpen them (or do you just get a new set)? Thanks!
My Golden came with badly overgrown nails so I was trimming them almost every week at first. A year later, I check them every two weeks and clip any that are getting a bit long. My clippers don't get anywhere near as much use as they would in a salon, but I know they won't stay sharp forever. Thanks again!

I have a golden too, I know their nails can be very thick. After a year of debating, I finally bought the diamond dremel bit from Whitman’s (they are in Michigan and make this particular bit). I have bought other diamond dremel bits, plus the sandpaper type pieces that go on the dremel.
The bit from Whitman’s cost $150.00, I feel well worth it. This bit does not get as hot as all of the others. I feel that if your dog is ok with the dremel, it’s such a friendly way to gradually get the nails to a nice length.
I also love the millers forge. Rudy clips nails beautifully, but if you are like me, afraid of getting too close, the dremel with the diamond bit from Whitman’s is a great way to go. I am in no way connected to Whitman’s, not even sure if I spelled it right😆

@@CD-wd2bd I hear many good things about Dremels! I'm used to using clippers (grew up in a show dog household) and luckily I can see all my Golden's quicks, which makes it pretty simple. He's very good about the clippers too.
