It’s not always a sign of neglect. Some owners don’t know how to trim their pups nails and some pups are fussy. My pup is fussy AND has dark black nails. Try using a dremel. It’s much easier. I have a Shiba Inu and i can just touch the clippers to his nail and he goes crazy. It’s really sad when you see the ones that the nails have curled in so far they literally have imbedded into the pad itself, they get infected, and swollen and so painful. If you can’t do it at home, go to a groomer, go to a vet, just get it done. If you have a pet you need to do right by them or just don’t own one....
@Brooke They are your responsability, it's painful to walk like that, if you can't clip them, get someone to do it. You wouldn't walk a day like that. There's no excuse.
New subscriber! Thanks for the video. Last fall I had brain surgery to remove a benign tumor I've had for 10 years. While recovering, my dog hadn't been to the vet since February and her nails got extremely long. I'm doing so-so and will be taking her to the vet in a couple days. (I still can't hold my head down for long). I say this to the people making rude comments, that unforeseen circumstances do happen, and things have to be put off until times are better, as in my case.
I wish you could've talked about gradual trimming for dogs whose quicks are longer. I trim my friends' dogs' nails and when they are too long must do a 3 week series of cutting to give the quicks time to recede so I can trim more until they are the ideal length. Too many people think it's ok to slice through that sensitive nerve and just put styptic on the nail to stop the bleeding. That's *SO* painful for the poor dog and leads to extreme fear of getting nails cut. And understandably so!
I’m going through this now. I didn’t know that the quick can do that. I was going by the length of the quick to determine when cut his nails, but the quick was always at the ends every time I checked finally I’m like something is up. So I started reading and learned that they over grow. He’s kinda my adopted dog. My roommate is neglectful. She kinda just gave up, but she still pays for his food, so I adopted him and he’s my big love bug now, he’s such a good boy. I got him a wheelchair for his bad hips, he’s St. Bernard and Great Dane mix, and he’s struggling a lot walking, I do everything I can to make these last couple of years his happiest. But I’ve never had a dog before, not my own, and I had no idea the quick could over grow and become the length of the nail itself, and now I’m so afraid of hurting him and trying to figure how to recede it. There’s no where to cut except around the quick. But I worry that would make it so that the quick sticks out more when he’s walking etc. I dunno. Sorry lol. Seeing your comment gives me hope. Ty for sharing!
@@taniele84use a nail file! You can give it a little file every other day or as often as you can, so you’re taking minimal amounts off but you’re still making progress and you don’t need to remove a think at a time like with clippers 😊
YES ! Quick stop is a lifesaver when you NEED IT though. the goal is to not quick them AT ALL. i always tell my techs to start trimming slowly when cutting black nails because im not even 100% confident in myself when trimming black nails.. i go slow tho and if i feel like i really can’t do it, ill either resort to a nail dremel or just ask a bather for help.
Ugh I know. When I cut one of my dogs nails, even when I get the quick, her claws are still touching the floor. It's infuriating. She's always been this way too. Just has a long quick and walks on her toes
@@kerielwatson3197 I have the same issue with my puppers. I trim his nails every 10 days or so but it I can never take much off because of the quick. So...his nails are always too long. I don't know what to do?
@Tolerance It grows close to the upper tip of the claw, gotta be careful! If you don't know what you're doing, have a vet or professional dog groomer show you, don't attempt it on your own. You can really hurt your dog and cause bleeding.
Wow, I've never seen anything like that before!! That poor dog! Every time I see you clip nails, it helps me feel more confident. Thanks for doing these videos! :)
Thank You so much GVGIRL..Yes,clipping them on a regular schedule, will help the vein to recede some, and will make future clippings a bit easier..We appreciate your kind comments, and for watching us..
@@kimbo500 The quick was unusually short on that dog, so really easy. Most are much more challenging not to cut it. Hopefully the owner of that poor thing learned from it.
This was similar to a German Shepherd I adopted. She was an outside doge before I got her and the owners never clipped her nails because they were worn down on the ground. What they didnt realize though was that her doclaws jest kept growing. They had grown right over and into the pads. I took her to the vet because I wasnt comfortable doing them myself. Good thing I did to, the pads bled when they clipped and removed the nails. Poor Bella took it like a champ though, no fighting or crying
Ow! How painful. Thanks for cutting his nails! My dog sort of has long nails due to fear of nail clippers, but I've been trying to find videos like this for tips on how to groom her. Thanks for the video
My grandmother's dog had the same problem. What I did was I'd set time aside where I could REALLY take my time, and I'd cut a nail, give her half a treat. (Gooberlicious works wonders for this) Give her time to collect, cut a nail, treat. Now, it does turn into a lot of treats in the beginning, but once she started relaxing about it, I started backing off the treats. No fear now. She'll let me have at it, one treat when she's done, no big deal at all. :)
Another great video by Rudy, I have learned so much in watching your videos, I am so thankful you do these informative videos, they really help people so much with their dogs. Please continue to share your knowledge. Thanks again
Finally a video explaining how to cut the thumb nail! You should make an official video just of thumb nails on dogs and put that in the Title of the vid. I looked everywhere on yt and no search results found. This video helped so much! Thank you!!!
I have never seen such long nails on a dog before. I do not mind trimming white nails. The black nails make me nervous though. I never trim as short as you did. I wish I could, as it looks nice. I got one dog a little too short once on one nail, and ever since I never trim nails short since. I know that was one happy dog after you did that job. Great work.
With all of the COVID-19 stuff I've been trying to bone up on how to groom my dogs myself and your videos are THE BOMB! Thanks so much! I have 2 rescue dogs, both from awful situations. One is a five year old poodle terrier mix named Maddie. She came from a puppy mill situation where 30+ dogs were seized. She was about a year old and pregnant when she was seized from the "owner." She was fostered and had her puppy (which died the next day), then spayed, and we adopted her. The other is a fourteen year old Bichon mix named Buddy. Another seizure situation of over a dozen dogs, all male, probably used for stud purposes. We got him when he was about ten years old. The Winnipeg Humane Society think he'd never been outside of a kennel till he was rescued. Bud didn't even know how to play and even now I can count the number of times I've seen him do a play bow on both hands! Both have come a LONG way since we got them. Your videos give great tips on equipment and handling of the dogs while grooming. I can't thank you enough!
Thanks! This gave me the courage to be a little more aggressive cutting my guys nails. He fights me like I'm trying to cut his leg off so it isn't exactly an easy task. Funny boy. We'll do a better job from now on. I'm just afraid of hurting him. Small dog with big feet and HUGE striped nails.😊
Rudy is the best. I have trouble in that the dog has dementia, gets aggressive, and the vein in the long nails are also long. Thanks for your calming wisdom Rudy.
My dogs nails were not as bad as the nails in the video but bad enough that my dog wasn't able to fully walk on the pads of his feet. Thank you so much for the video because it helped me feel confident enough to trim them back more than I would have dared. I was lucky that Louie had some of the white nails which helped me judge better how far I could clip back safely and I used that to help determine how much on the black nails I could clip. From Louie and I, we both thank you for making this video!!!
This is the first time watching your video. I am so glad I saw this video. You are the best!!! I've heard so many horror stories out there concerning dog grooming. I bought everything to groom my Shihpoo. I am so nervous about nail trimming. They are short and look great having them done professionally. Now.. my turn to start doing them and using clippers on grooming. She is good with everything except nail trimming. It will take awhile for both of us to get comfortable. Watching you helps! Thank you!!!
Great video but given that 1) you are a skilled professional 2)the cooperative and calm temperament of the dog also helps! Question: With that length how did you not get (cut) the quick?
Because he was doing the white nails first. White nails are actually translucent, so you can SEE the pink quick through them. Then after cutting the white ones and determining the length of her quicks, he took a chance on the black ones, knowing they’d be approximately the same. But if it’s a dog you’ve never groomed and ALL the claws are solid black, then you can’t just hack off that much, no matter how long the nails are, because the quicks can sometimes grow almost as long as the nail. So in that case, he’d have to slice off little bits at a time until he can start seeing the dot inside the pulp, which is the end of the quick. The more frequently you do that, the faster the quicks start to recede until eventually you’re able to cut the claws nice and short.
Thank you so much. Our one dog hates to see the clippers come, so we have to have 2 people to do it. Our daughter does it when she comes home, more than once a month, and our dog really needs it done. She will chew on them in the meantime. Our other dog doesn't need clipping at all. Different breeds I guess! Good demo!
I said it before and I'll say it again. You are so gentle and wonderful with these dogs really. I love watching your videos. I have an eight month old toy poodle which I started clipping his nails very early but now he is becoming increasingly difficult to cut. I had my daughter hold him today but seems to pull his leg back just as I'm ready to snip. It's very frustrating. He's really a sweet dog and smart. Any suggestions?
Thank you so much for your kind words..Maybe you can try doing one,or two nails at a time, just to shorten the process, and do another one or two the next day..let me know if that helps..
My puppy likes to pull her foot away too ☺️. The other day, we tried having her stand on the table at face level with me (as I'm sitting in a chair), and she was a lot more calm that way. We could hold her more loosely and I think it made her less nervous. This way I can also look at the nails straight on and see that I'm not getting close to the quick. Hope this helps anybody with a foot-pulling dog😉.
Thank you for the video very informative, question what if all the nails are black and the veins have grown into the hook? We have a King Charles Cav and he is a tri with all black nails. we have made a few bleed and wondering if the veins recede at all?
I love your videos. We're finally getting our puppy to tolerate nail clipping. I think I was being too anxious and making her anxious. At least she won't be like our relative's dog who would projectile-poop when the vet tried to clip her nails. 😬 Poor dog/poor vet!
Thank you thank you thank you. My poor baby's claws well they were over her toes. Just that easy. Now my baby is all better and you saved me one vet bill.
Thank you for this video. I need to do my dogs nails for the very first time and ive been looking for a video that will show me how to do my dogs white nails and you provided one on a dog that had both nail colors.
Thanks so much for the video. It really helps! I'm going to commit to clipping my Bella's (poodle/bichon) nails once a week until they get to a nice length that isn't tapping the ground. They're not too bad, just a little longer than I think they should be. Unfortunately Bella has hind dew claws that curl so tightly that there's just simply no room to get any sort of nail clippers (guillotine or scissor) between the claw and the pad from any angle. In this case I've been using a manual nail file (metal one so it shouldn't wear out) to slowly file the nails down. Yet at the vet's office they did it so quickly and i forgot to ask how, so maybe I should see if there's clippers that don't have such huge hooks at the end. The nail file works well, it's just time consuming and she hates her feet being touched even after all these years of grooming and trimming, so if I could make it speedier, I would haha
The owner must have been an older person who forgot or couldn't get that done themselves. Thats the only logical explanation i cam think of besides straight up neglect.
About 4-5 of my dogs nails touch the floor. I randomly got disabled when he turned 4. Nobody helps me. Not with my med expenses, cleaning, day to day, my dog. Nothing. 0 help. My Dad gives me money bc I do a tiny Bit of work for him but 80% of my income still goes to my medical expenses. It’s not neglect, I am suffering greatly and I’m not giving up my best friend. Is there actually a nonprofit to help disabled people with their dogs? Can someone take him to the vet? Y’all in the comments act like people will step up to help us. WHO???
@@Julia_BH There are charities that can help. What's available to you will depend on what country and area you live in. You could try phoning the local vets and asking if they know of schemes that could help someone in your situation. Or ask an advice cell that refers to other charities. Good luck.
@@Julia_BH How are you & your best friend doing now? I hope you’re both in a better state. Especially since the Plandemic forced so much crap on the world. :/ 🙏
Rudy you are so gentle and so precious. Your cute little client had full trust in you. I am so impressed. I am so nervous I will cut my dogs veins as their nails are black. Would you recommend soaking the paws a while first before cutting to soften the nails. I find my dogs nails slightly brittle. I love your channel. Thank you so much Rudy 🐾
Thank you so much for your kind comment..I would not recommend soaking the nail,as it will soften it up,and make it even more sensitive..I would start by just tipping small amounts off, until your dog, and yourself become more comfortable with it..I hope it helps..thank you
I have Schnauzers they walk 7 days a week on the sidewalk. We do 3 miles in the morning and 1 mile in the evening. Their nails still grow very fast. I have to trim them every month.I That dog looked like it might be a Schnauzer? She was so good for her nail trim!
just rescued a dog from a really bad home and owner. her nails aren’t quite this long, but still very long and you can tell they’re hurting her. came here to learn how to cut her nails so she can be comfortable until we find a suitable groomer in our new town!
Thank you so much for this very helpful video. I want to say that the music is not at all necessary, I would be more than happy to just be able to hear your instructions.
Thank you so much for this video! I'm graduating from my training at a local dog daycare center and my "practical exam" is trimming my brother's friend's dog's nails. He has black nails and they're overgrown like the ones you showed, so your video helped me a lot with learning what to do in that situation. Now I'm ready to help the dog. :]
Show him the muzzle. It gets far worse if he knows they can get around it. Spend time on making your dog comfortable with touching the paws, later on making it fine to touch them with the clipper, even later to deal with pressure on the nail. Most dogs have zero problems with the actual cutting, but it's all in their head. Don't let your dog stand up right when you're done, but calm further, give treats and pat.
Very informative video!! I can now trim my dogs nails without the fear of hurting him as I have been ill for a long time & unable to take the proper steps needed... Thanks so very much❤🌷‼
Same we haven’t gotten my dog groomed because of the quartine and by the time the quartine start we didn’t have time and now one of his nails are over growing
I have two Maltese I have a hard time with, the one I cut the quick and it bled a lot. I won’t get the flu vaccine for my dogs so I can’t use their grooming service. Does that make you think?
That's what my dog's dew claw looked like. I clipped it the same way he did. Just make sure the tip of the clipper got in that loop and not too close to the pad.
You are good! The dog didn't even flinch or whine. And you never drew blood - even better! It's so important, especially if you play sports with your dog, like agility, as they need to know where true down is. Not doing the nails can also splay the foot. You know they're getting long when the dog starts biting at them. Susan Garrett has a great video on pedicure please where the vet shows you exactly how to cut them so the quick goes back further. Her Bulldog mix went from fighting a toe nail trim to being the first in line for one! There's even a lady who practiced with her cat that needed bloodwork monthly ( she practiced daily with pressure from a chopstick to simulate a needle - the vet couldn't believe it was the same cat. Also, for those dogs that aren't fans, Chirag Patel has a bucket game video of 3 steps - don't skip any of the steps. I had a dog years ago that took 3 - 5 people to get his nails done. Found a feed store lady that only does toenails. She's like an old farm girl. He actually fell asleep on her. She somehow did it upside down like she was sheering a sheep. Amazing and only 5.00. Have another groomer that goes at the animal's pace so it's a positive experience and yes, even cats and still only 5.00. Some groomers have clinic days each month too - ask around and make sure you feel comfortable because if you're not comfortable, your dog wont be either. I'm right there holding but my dog also doesn't need to be groomed by a groomer. Hope that helps.
Just watched a few of your vids made it so east to do my dogs all black overgrown nails. I've been scared to do it cause I don't wanty.dog biting me but he handled it pretty well
Thanks for the great video! iI now feel empowered to do it myself. My girl has 1 curled nail that gets so close to the pad in only 3 wks. She is walking on it but she does have hair there to soften it! So,off to do her nail! Awwwww ha ha
Thank you for the great video! Could you please post a video on how you deal with dogs that fight you doing this because that is my problem at home, thx.
How long can their veins get? Could they curl all the way around with the nail? my mom's dog had really long nails that were curling around and nearly going into the pads and I trim them down all except for one and that would be the single thumb nail on the side of the Paw. It appears that the pink vein curls all the way around. So I'm afraid to trim it and hurt her. I don't want to make her hemorrhage or anything. She normally has very high anxiety for a dog so she didn't like her nails being trimmed as it was. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. That nail really needs to be cut down but the only thing that's stopping me is that that vein looks like it curls all the way around. Is that even possible? Thanks in advance!

I used to work in animal hospital and trimming long nails like that would bring me satisfaction . But again I would feel so bad for the pet that can hurt them while walking

Maybe the dog is picking up on different energies. If you're anxious, it may make the doggy anxious.
It helps if your dog doesn't try to kill you when doing it
LMAO!!!! For sure.

@Brooke They are your responsability, it's painful to walk like that, if you can't clip them, get someone to do it. You wouldn't walk a day like that. There's no excuse.
This dog is super nice n quiet
A rare one, indeed.
I keep showing this video to my dog cooper but he still won't trim his own nails unbelievable 🤣🤣🤣
Lmao!!
So many nail clipping videos on UA-cam and I find only this one helpful. thank you
Thank you so much for your kind words, so glad it helped
New subscriber! Thanks for the video. Last fall I had brain surgery to remove a benign tumor I've had for 10 years. While recovering, my dog hadn't been to the vet since February and her nails got extremely long. I'm doing so-so and will be taking her to the vet in a couple days. (I still can't hold my head down for long). I say this to the people making rude comments, that unforeseen circumstances do happen, and things have to be put off until times are better, as in my case.
You are so right things happen in life.I hope you are feeling better, and all good things come your way..God Bless! Thank You so much for watching us..
How are you doing now?
I hope quite well. :)
Thank you for this! Trying to get used to grooming my dogs myself and their nails are sooo long. I feel so bad. Going to attempt this today! ❤
At least the dogs quicks were nice and short.
Exactly , my problem is my dogs quicks grow at about the same rate as the nail.
@Lala Land Hi Lala. Thank you so much for that information. I'll try that and see how it works. Good luck, hope it works out for you. :)
Thanks so much for your reply. I appreciate it!
@@kimbo500 The quick was unusually short on that dog, so really easy.
Most are much more challenging not to cut it.
Hopefully the owner of that poor thing learned from it.
that must be so uncomfortable for the dog to walk... thanks for doing her nails. good job!
Kathryn lu, Thank You,for your kind comments, and for watching us..
Our dogs are outside and we are the same-- luckily their dewclaws haven't grown into their pads, but I will surely double check tomorrow.
Ow! How painful.
Thanks for cutting his nails! My dog sort of has long nails due to fear of nail clippers, but I've been trying to find videos like this for tips on how to groom her. Thanks for the video
Thank You so much for your kind comment, and for watching us..
Poor baby, well done for making her feel comfortable 🥰.
This is so satisfying to watch. Thank your for making her feel better. 🐶
Another great video by Rudy, I have learned so much in watching your videos, I am so thankful you do these informative videos, they really help people so much with their dogs. Please continue to share your knowledge. Thanks again
Thank you so much for your kind words. We are so glad ,and happy that you feel that way about our videos..
Poor pup.
Great job. Thanks for making her life a little easier. 💚
You are so good with these dogs 🤗💓
Finally a video explaining how to cut the thumb nail! You should make an official video just of thumb nails on dogs and put that in the Title of the vid. I looked everywhere on yt and no search results found. This video helped so much! Thank you!!!
That is a great idea for a video..Thank you so much for your kind comment, and for watching us..We will try to put something together like that.
Thank you so much for this kind comment..
Poor thing!!! So happy seen her nails cutting ❤
Thank you so much for this kind comment, It means the world to us..If our videos help even a little, then We have done our job...Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for your kind comment. I'm so glad it helped
That dog was an angel while you were clipping her nails
Thank you
I have watched many videos and you definitely have the best close up images I have seen. thank you
Thank you so much for watching us...
Awe you're so sweet...I love the way you talked to her🌺💕
I just got a rescue dog chihuahua this is her nails can’t wait to help her
This is the first time watching your video.
I started my dogs the day I got them home cutting nails and plucking the ears cuts hair around the eyes a bit . I got no problems they sit so nice .
Poor, little thing! That was some much needed relief!
This is so helpful! My dog's nails are mostly all black and I'm always worried about cutting into the quick. Thanks so much for this!
Thank you so much. I'm so glad it helped..
Great video but given that 1) you are a skilled professional 2)the cooperative and calm temperament of the dog also helps! Question: With that length how did you not get (cut) the quick?
my question exactly. always my problem
Awe you’re so nice to the dogs no forcing or yanking like on other videos
Sheila..Thank You so much for your nice comment, and for watching us!!
Thank you for sharing with us about dog cutting nail God bless us all💝🙏
Thank you so much for your kind comment and for watching us
Thank you so much. Our one dog hates to see the clippers come, so we have to have 2 people to do it. Our daughter does it when she comes home, more than once a month, and our dog really needs it done. She will chew on them in the meantime. Our other dog doesn't need clipping at all. Different breeds I guess! Good demo!
All I could think looking at the nails before he clipped them was “aawwww poor doggo” 🥺
Thank you so much for this video. It gave me the confidence to complete the task and with great results.
Thank you so much for your kind words, I'm so glad it helped
Hope this helps anybody with a foot-pulling dog😉.
oh my she must have felt so much better!!!
I exercise, play, and walk my dog before doing her nails and she still gives me the hardest time in the world.
That poor little girl. So glad you could help her out
Thank you for the video very informative, question what if all the nails are black and the veins have grown into the hook? We have a King Charles Cav and he is a tri with all black nails. we have made a few bleed and wondering if the veins recede at all?
I love your videos. We're finally getting our puppy to tolerate nail clipping. I think I was being too anxious and making her anxious.
At least she won't be like our relative's dog who would projectile-poop when the vet tried to clip her nails. 😬 Poor dog/poor vet!
Thank you thank you thank you. My poor baby's claws well they were over her toes. Just that easy. Now my baby is all better and you saved me one vet bill.
I'm so glad..Thank you..
What a good little dog!
very clean job.
Thank you so much for your kind words and for watching us
This makes me happy!

Thank You from Puerto Rico.
So satisfying and I bet that feels so great for the dog
Thank You so much..The dog was like a different dog,as soon as we did it,as to say..Thank you..
Awsome that was what I needed to know I have small dogs and was worried about the quick with long mails, thanks
Thank you so much for your kind words and for watching us I'm so glad it helped
Poor baby 😭😭😭💔 I'm so happy you helped her.
WHO???
Julia B lmao hun, no one said anything ab disable people. They said stuff about people who neglect their dogs.

Terrific video, thank you for teaching us and giving us the confidence to trim our dogs nails!
Excellent job👍👍
Rudy you are so gentle and so precious. Your cute little client had full trust in you. I am so impressed. I am so nervous I will cut my dogs veins as their nails are black. Would you recommend soaking the paws a while first before cutting to soften the nails. I find my dogs nails slightly brittle.
I love your channel. Thank you so much Rudy 🐾
Thank you so much for your kind comment..I would not recommend soaking the nail,as it will soften it up,and make it even more sensitive..I would start by just tipping small amounts off, until your dog, and yourself become more comfortable with it..I hope it helps..thank you
When you can hear the nails clicking on the floor they are too long
Not true. They need them for traction. It can be the perfect length
@@brandonjoseph1489 Loud clicking.
I have Schnauzers they walk 7 days a week on the sidewalk. We do 3 miles in the morning and 1 mile in the evening. Their nails still grow very fast. I have to trim them every month.I
That dog looked like it might be a Schnauzer? She was so good for her nail trim!
Watch out for a thin little extension of the quick. I have seen overgrown nails with overgrown quicks that take weekly or biweekly trims to correct
I agree..100%

My dog shows me his teeth when he sees the nail clipper.
LOL! I've seen that look.
This was an excellent video. I learned so much! Thank you! ❤

That's what my dog's dew claw looked like. I clipped it the same way he did. Just make sure the tip of the clipper got in that loop and not too close to the pad.
Thank you for this tutorial video! Such great work you do! 🐶💕Love from Chi💕
Thank you, that was very educational.
Great job
Just watched a few of your vids made it so east to do my dogs all black overgrown nails. I've been scared to do it cause I don't wanty.dog biting me but he handled it pretty well

Thanks for the great video! iI now feel empowered to do it myself. My girl has 1 curled nail that gets so close to the pad in only 3 wks. She is walking on it but she does have hair there to soften it! So,off to do her nail! Awwwww ha ha
Thank you so much for your kind comment I'm so glad it helped..
Hello my name is Gene and I didn't notice that my little dog few claws grew into the pad and I'm going to clip it but I need a step by step on what to do and watch out for I have never clipped any dog nails and I know about the quick and I've grinded nails before and so I'm more afraid then the dog is and I know I can do this and so will it hurt and will there be alot of blood and what happens if it doesn't get clipped
I used to work in animal hospital and trimming long nails like that would bring me satisfaction . But again I would feel so bad for the pet that can hurt them while walking
Wow such neglect.. some people shouldn't have pets! Glad you made her comfortable again 👍🏻
