Just a little tip. Instead of pulling on the paw and pulling it away from their body, kinda get behind them, and hold their paw closer to the body. It's just as easy to access, and helps relax them. I saw that tip somewhere on another video and it works great
@@PolymerJones if that doesn't help, then kinda try what the dog whisperer does. Get the cat exhausted first. When it gets the zoomies and runs a lot, or if you have a routine to play with them, do that till they are too tired to play anymore. Then, feed them and wait about 5 minutes for them to get relaxed and ready to rest or sleep. Then try it again, keeping their paws close to their body as best you can. Another thing is find the position you think works best, then use that position daily when they want to be petted. Get them used to you always holding them that way and make it an enjoyable experience. Also after holding them that way daily and petting, give them a treat
@@PolymerJones also to help get them exhausted, you can use a little good quality catnip. I discourage regular use of catnip, and don't let them see where you keep it because they will hang out there and cry till you give them some. Do not worry about being perfect at trimming. When new at it, just focus on the sharp point removal only. Do not worry about trimming as far as you can without hurting them, just stay focused on trimming the sharp point off. In time you will get better

I’ve always found the scissors-style clippers to be most useful. The ones I use most often are at least 10 years old and I have no idea where I got them. I also have a pair from Safari that seem to work well. They are so small and maneuverable so I can work quickly and accurately. RE: Miller’s Forge. I have a set of the large clippers that I’ve used for my dogs for years. It’s simple and straightforward, and I’ve had no issues with them. That said, I can see where this smaller version has issues.
Snowpuppies, I bet a lot of the people praising the Millers Forge are using the larger ones. The bulk of the issues do seem to be affecting the small size.
This was super helpful. I’ve had a tiny scissor type clipper for years that works really well. Recently I bought a similar type so I can have one on each floor of the house (to take advantage of when my cats are relaxed on my lap) but the new one just splits their nails badly. I might order that Safari one, I didn’t know they came with safety guards! I’m always so afraid of cutting into the quick. Thanks for the video!
I really like the ZenClippers, I use the smaller version where you choose the hole size, I got medium which is a 2mm hole. I would recommend these for people who maybe can’t see as well or if say your clipping claws in an evening when your cat is sat with you and the light is poor. You can only fit a small amount of claw through the hole so it’s impossible to cut too much and there’s no adjusting or anything to do. I think the medium 2mm size would work for most adult cats, larger cat breeds might want the next size up.
Such an important topic when the need arises. Millie just cost us over $500 at the vet because she damaged her bottom lip. I think it was her trying to pull off her old prickly nails. (Not proven) Our nail clippers is horrible. I cannot see what I am doing with a steel shield in front. And it is lumpy for my petite hands. Sharp, simple, easy to use and seeable. Thanks for taking the time to explain.

Hi Malorie ( I hope I spelt your name right) so I got a cat in September and I have a question for you are iRobot robotic vacuum the best robotic vacuums to get rid of your cats hair and dirty mess ( not wee or pop)? 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

Thank you for another informative video, Mallory. I’ll look for the first one you reviewed. Is it good for arthritic hands and fingers? My cat can’t stand having his nails clipped. Even with two of us holding him, he still fights us. I bring him to Tractor Supply (they have a vet, etc every Sat, 4-5:30pm). But it went from $20 last year, to $33 this year. Yikes! (When my cat visits the vet for any reason, I ask if they can include a mani-pedi.) I’m taking my cat with me to our own apartment in a couple of months. I’m hoping the lowering of stress (for both of us…my reason for moving) will make it easier to do it myself.
The scissor like clippers, the white ones you used. Mine look similar, but my cats claws are so darn hard to see, they are white, and so are her paws. I don’t trim them myself without help.
Why are guillotine nail clippers left out of the review? I use one and I love it because I can't accidentally clip something else with it and my cats most of the time, son't even notice I clipped one of their nail with it.
Please review the Zen Nail Clippers, because they are better than any of the ones you reviewed! I love them! I was mortified about cutting my cat's nails because I already had 2 different vets accidentally cut the quick and now my cat is terrified of vets! It has a hole in it that will not fit the entire cat's nail into, so you can't accidentally cut the quick. You can write to them and have them send you a card that has the different sizes they make with holes already punched out, which you see which one your cat (or dog) fits perfectly into, before you buy one. I think everyone should know about it, so please add that to your reviews!
I've used Bamboo brand cat nail scissors since 2011 that comes with styptic powder to stop bleeding if you do accidentally cut into the quick and a small file on the side of that. Thankfully I've never cut into the quick, and prefer this style so I can see how far the nail protrudes before clipping.
love your videos and have taken your advise a lot. I like video color grading, so I'm thinking your videos have a magenta tint to it. Maybe it's the lights or the camera, but it can be easily corrected in post. Maybe it's just me.
That's a good point. I have been intentionally making the videos a bit more magenta to bring a bit of color to the skin, but you're right that it looks unnatural. I'll try playing around with a better color grade. Thank you!
Should you use a different one for a kitten? We adopted two kittens, they're about 14 weeks old. They did it at the shelter but they've been home with us for a few days and they'll need it done again soon. We have some bigger clippers from our older cat, but they seem too big for use on a kitten.
I would love to know your thoughts on the videos of people clipping their cats' nails while sort of holding them like a mother cat holds their kittens? XD I've only ever seen it on tiktok, mostly from japanese accounts from what I can tell, but its an interesting method?
Thanks for the video. I have a new kitten who has dagger claws, and I'm trying to figure out how to deal with them. Now, I just need to know how to wrangle a wriggling kitten and not get her angry or me slashed.
If you have to Burito (wrap) him in a towel pulling one foot out at a time and always give treats. Until he gets used to it only do 1 or 2 paws at a time. Start right away and do it often.
If you notice about the safaris a problem I have and probably because she is still a kid but I do believe she’s not gonna get much bigger is that the thickness of the actual blade I know the very end were cut is thin however when I’m putting her nail in from one side to the other both of the blades are thick and so it’s very hard to not get close to her quick I do trim her nails every week with her bath she is extremely easy to do her nails she’s been having them done so she’s a baby and as you know stinks kittens you have to actually take their paws full back the skins and push back on on the nails make sure they’re clean so the nail is fully extended I do find that the clippers with the little curve outing and the preventative back so that he doesn’t go all the way through a very difficult to work with especially for the dewclaws and I am left-handed so that makes a difference to agree that scissors for humans and milk uppers for humans are definitely not appropriate kitty they just start chopping off just like you wouldn’t want to use sheepshearers to give is little boy a fade Just a question are you believe to the all the clippers they’re just so big and bulky in your hand to even get them close to the little kitty paw when you have to extend the cats like so far out in order to have access to the one little Tony all the time I Use the tiny little ones with no safety they have little curved very sharp blade they kind of just fit right on the tips of your fingers however I believe that they’re a little thick too in the blade I don’t think yet I found a great cutting device that I feel totally comfortable with that I don’t second-guess myself every time
I would be interested in a video on doing a sanitary clip on long haired cats. I have 2 ragdoll cats, they often have feces caught in their hair if we don't do the sanitary clip. Right now the vet does it for me. I would like to learn how to do it myself.
Judith, that's a fascinating idea, but there are many people on UA-cam far more qualified to make a video like that. This video may help: ua-cam.com/video/b9Nl28Ihueg/v-deo.html
I have a really hard time imagining a typical cat feeling comfortable in one of those. Maybe if you have a very docile cat like this: ua-cam.com/users/shorts0OHh5CFRUFc?feature=share But in general, I think cats will feel more confident with their feet on something solid.
@@AllAboutCatsYT I found a lady on UA-cam who sells these swaddling type blankets for cats and I think that is a better approach. They are used for the same purpose and if you are trying to trim a cat’s nails yourself. She also trims her cat’s nails by holding him on her lap (the docile one). My cat is very affectionate but not a lap cat so keeping her on my lap for nail trim is challenging.
I will probably order her swaddling blanket product to help with Vita’s nail trims and any other cats I come across. Disabled people have cats and this tool may be able to help them.
I have a problem, my cat used to let me trim her nails but now she doesn't want me to at all. Now I never cut into the quick at all, only the tips of the nails. Could it be the type of nail clippers that I'm using that's causing her to not want me to cut her nails? I noticed they don't cut so cleanly to so I'm guessing it's the type of nail clippers. Can getting a different type of clipper make her maybe allow her to clip her nails?
Just make sure the BLADES are facing vertically NOT horizontally as human clippers are used. Clipper should b us d VERTICALLY; OPPOSITE if human nail clippers. According to vets, holding the clipper horizontally is asking for problems and reason cats FEAR trimming. We humans are just using clipper bass-ackwards!
Hi mallory its me jason! I don't clip their nails, i dont find it necessary as it dorsnt affect us or our furniture. Also don't they shed themselves? Thanks Mallory 😃
I don't do my cat's often. Even though they shed the sheath part, they can still get caught in furniture. It happened when my cat was using her cat tree 🌳 It got caught in the fabric I helped release the claw.
Yes, the sheaths of the nails will shed normally, but the tips will still be pointed. The idea of trimming is to make the tips blunt. If those claws don't affect furniture or anything else, I'd agree that there's no point in trimming!
I trim my cats nail bc she loves running up and down the carpeted stairs or if she’s playing around. She also loves to be held and climb on my back and it can get a bit painful 😅
The ZenClipper is far superior to any of the clippers in your video. They come in many sizes and prevent you from over clipping. After using other types of clippers these are the best and safest in my opinion. You may need two or three different sizes as you cat grows from kitten to adult. Start with the XXS and go bigger in size as needed depending on your cats claw growth.
Have you tried the Safari? I am undecided between the Safari and the ZenClipper. Clipping my cat's nails stresses me out so much because I am terrified of hurting them should they suddenly jerk or move abruptly while I am clipping them, so a safety feature is so important to me. I don't see how on the ZenClipper there is a safety feature which prevents over-clipping.
@@robertsimmons6467 I don't have the Zen Clipper Adjustable Nail Clipper but it would work by your constricting the opening -- the narrower the opening, the more limited you are in how far you can move the clipper up towards the base of the cat's claws 🙂
Yes I have the ZenClipper scissor type ones, that just have the little hole to slip the claw into, they are great as the hole only lets that small amount of claw through. Obviously you need to try to figure out your cats claw size first, but I went with the 2mm medium size which I think would work well for most cats, I don’t like to trim too much off anyway just the tip that gets sharp.
I clip my cat's nails every two weeks, and my dog's get done weekly. I use the red handled Miller's Forge for my dog, because the sharpness of the blade makes all the difference in being able to get a good clean cut. My cat I do with human nail clippers, turned so that they don't crush the nail. Using the "nail guard" is not good advice. The amount of nail that can go through the clipper up to that nail guard is longer than your dog or cat's nails should be past their quick, and relying on that is a good way to guarantee you will cut into the quick. If you can use the nail guard without quicking your cat or dog, you aren't keeping their nails properly trimmed.
Koira, u r the FIRST cat guardian who knows HOW to hold human clipper when using on pet paws! You even specified to TURN blade UP (vertically) which is the OPPOSITE of using on human nails. THX for your love of critters.
I have had my cat for like 7 years and have never had to cut her nails! Folks can google it. I think it's more for people's convenience! I have plenty of cardboard scratchers etc and things for her to scratch on keeps nails buffed and they won't wanna claw up stuff they are not supposed to.
I will tell you with the Miller's Forge clippers, there is nothing more scary or dangerous than when the middle piece, the "spiral spring" suddenly pops out of place while you're clipping your cat's nails. I like Miller's Forge products in general, I've used them for probably almost 40 years, but these clippers are a no no. All of the points you made Mallory, plus let me add my own personal experience. If the handles suddenly expand, then I've had that steel spring come flying out towards my face, etc not to mention how it totally scared my cats and control o over the nail session was lost for that day. This is a safe issue I'm surprised the company hasn't addressed as well the safety points you brought out. 😒 I like Jorgensen and have used their surgical precision nail clippers for years. My last pair of clippers lasted me 20+ years. They have several models to choose from. These are what my vet uses in the office. (I just replaced my clippers and I believe they were somewhere around $10.99... don't remember for sure, but within a dollar of that price. I order directly from the company, they are a veterinary medical supply company, one part sells to the public and the other only to professionals/,veterinarians)
I absolutely hate trimming my cat’s nails bc she hates it and fights me. I’ll get one of these and see if she will calm down or at least not take as long to do.
@@AllAboutCatsYT These clippers were placed over a hook in the store with a whole bunch of other cat clippers with orange handles with safety features by a different company. I read the back of the package and the company said it had been around for over 40 years. I had seen this video when it came out and while in the store I thought these clippers were one of the recommended ones. I was right but they were not first place. Lol.
Yeah, so the scissor ones should be out of the question for me. My vet had recommended it, even with being fully aware of my hesitancy for trimming my cat’s claws.. Why did he do that? Also, I didn;t know you could use dog clippers on cats. Human scissors (and human toothpaste) of course out of the question for cats!
It seems we are ALL using these clippers wrong! Supposed to use clipper VERTICALLY not horizontally as ALL vids show and vets keep telling us to clip with clipper in vertical position so claw nail is cut side to side NOT up and down as we use on human nails. Just think of the shape of claw and u will see that horizontal would only separate layers of nail. Used VERTICALLY clipper cuts claw by blades meeting east to west; OPPOSITE of human nail clippers.
I got the tools and the slow feeder but no go. Wash her pet her whatever but her nails nope. Acts like the cat on Pepe Lepew and I am bleeding!! Rather clip my German shepherds nails. 😱
Most of these clippers are too large for the tiny claws of cats. They seem to be designed for dogs, with cats as an afterthought. Even the smallest one is larger than it needs to be.

Why are guillotine nail clippers left out of the review? I use one and I love it because I can't accidentally clip something else with it and my cats most of the time, son't even notice I clipped one of their nail with it.
Thanks for the important info! I would’ve cut into that pink area on their nail!
Well, they wouldn't have lost their life, but it would have hurt! Happy to help. :)
I like using the scissor type the most with my cats
Thanks for sharing, Tina!
Thanks for the tip! Here's a link for anyone who's interested: www.amazon.com/Zen-Clipper-Clippers-Between-Pounds/dp/B00Y1VFBJY
Great, I really need something other than a regular human nail clipper - very helpful.
Thank you!!
Thank you!
Im watching this knowing very well my cats wont let me trim their nails lmao
A video about likimats would be interesting.
Any recommendations on Cat Nail Clippers vs. Cat Nail "grinders"?
I would go for clippers. They're faster and quieter, and they're usually easier to use.
Thank you very much!
Thanks for the reviews. Would like to see a review of the best cat cages for overnight sleeping. Can't find any decent comparisons on youtube.
Hi there! Thanks for the request! We'll keep that in mind.
Should you use a different one for a kitten? We adopted two kittens, they're about 14 weeks old. They did it at the shelter but they've been home with us for a few days and they'll need it done again soon. We have some bigger clippers from our older cat, but they seem too big for use on a kitten.
From which age shall I start clipping my kittens nail?
If you notice about the safaris a problem I have and probably because she is still a kid but I do believe she’s not gonna get much bigger is that the thickness of the actual blade I know the very end were cut is thin however when I’m putting her nail in from one side to the other both of the blades are thick and so it’s very hard to not get close to her quick I do trim her nails every week with her bath she is extremely easy to do her nails she’s been having them done so she’s a baby and as you know stinks kittens you have to actually take their paws full back the skins and push back on on the nails make sure they’re clean so the nail is fully extended I do find that the clippers with the little curve outing and the preventative back so that he doesn’t go all the way through a very difficult to work with especially for the dewclaws and I am left-handed so that makes a difference to agree that scissors for humans and milk uppers for humans are definitely not appropriate kitty they just start chopping off just like you wouldn’t want to use sheepshearers to give is little boy a fade
Just a question are you believe to the all the clippers they’re just so big and bulky in your hand to even get them close to the little kitty paw when you have to extend the cats like so far out in order to have access to the one little Tony all the time I Use the tiny little ones with no safety they have little curved very sharp blade they kind of just fit right on the tips of your fingers however I believe that they’re a little thick too in the blade I don’t think yet I found a great cutting device that I feel totally comfortable with that I don’t second-guess myself every time
I would be interested in a video on doing a sanitary clip on long haired cats.
What do you think of using a cat hammock harness to put your cat in instead of having the cat sit on your lap? I saw them on Amazon.
I have a really hard time imagining a typical cat feeling comfortable in one of those. Maybe if you have a very docile cat like this: ua-cam.com/users/shorts0OHh5CFRUFc?feature=share
But in general, I think cats will feel more confident with their feet on something solid.
@@AllAboutCatsYT Here is the link to this lady’s channel. She is a vet tech. Maybe you can partner with her. ua-cam.com/video/6-JouGVh_zg/v-deo.html
I will probably order her swaddling blanket product to help with Vita’s nail trims and any other cats I come across. Disabled people have cats and this tool may be able to help them.
@@liveyouryoga Thanks. :)
Which was the easiest to squeeze? I have decreased strength in my hands due to nerve damage and need something easy.
Booooooooom! More excellent content!
I trim my cats nail bc she loves running up and down the carpeted stairs or if she’s playing around. She also loves to be held and climb on my back and it can get a bit painful 😅
Do you prefer a clipper or a grinder for trimming nails?
The ZenClipper is far superior to any of the clippers in your video. They come in many sizes and prevent you from over clipping. After using other types of clippers these are the best and safest in my opinion. You may need two or three different sizes as you cat grows from kitten to adult. Start with the XXS and go bigger in size as needed depending on your cats claw growth.
Have you tried the Safari? I am undecided between the Safari and the ZenClipper. Clipping my cat's nails stresses me out so much because I am terrified of hurting them should they suddenly jerk or move abruptly while I am clipping them, so a safety feature is so
important to me.
Beautiful voice❤
Thanks for the comment! You make a great point on the use of the safety guard for pets who are being trimmed regularly.
Koira, u r the FIRST cat guardian who knows HOW to hold human clipper when using on pet paws! You even specified to TURN blade UP (vertically) which is the OPPOSITE of using on human nails. THX for your love of critters.
btw how long you give Kitties a Bath once a Month
You don't need to bathe your cat on any regular schedule! Only if they get extremely dirty.
i'll stay with my toe nail clippers, works great
Good for you! :D
I like Jorgensen and have used their surgical precision nail clippers for years.
Miller’s forge safety feature is no good? Damn, I just bought them.
Yeah, I was surprised and disappointed as well.
@@AllAboutCatsYT I will invest in your first choice then. Great video!
Lol.
Eek. I'm sorry for letting that happen! Hope the new ones work for you.
@@AllAboutCatsYT Not your fault. I hadn’t seen this video in a really long time before yesterday. I can give them to my brother who has a small dog.
Wait what? The Millers is a budget option in the US??? In Sweden it's probably one of the most expensive ones 😅
There's a long weird commercial on instead of the article of trimming cat nails.🙀
Thank you!
I don't understand how the adjustment wheel can be used as a safety guard when trimming.
I'd probably lay down some sand paper and hope that files down the nails a bit, if I had a cat.
Nice video but knowing measurments of your hands would go along way
Did u eat the cat or is it to weird?
Too weird!
I got the tools and the slow feeder but no go. Wash her pet her whatever but her nails nope. Acts like the cat on Pepe Lepew and I am bleeding!! Rather clip my German shepherds nails. 😱
Mines been banned 3 places now. I may try myself one more time but about to give up. He’s just not having it !
@@WhiteWabbitWarrior wow now my Cat behaves at the Vet(I think they threatened to feed her to the dogs) 🤣🤷🏻♀️
Damn if I was a Cat I wouldn't mind having you as my Owner lol
sorry just had to say that
My face tends to do the job
🤣🤣
😘
👍🏻
Most of these clippers are too large for the tiny claws of cats. They seem to be designed for dogs, with cats as an afterthought. Even the smallest one is larger than it needs to be.
Agree - I use a human one and it works way better
"designed for dogs with 🐈 as an afterthought. " lol.
how are you
Doing well!
can i only feed my 2 month old kitten boiled chicken and water
Please don't. That diet would lead to nutritional deficiencies. A nutritionally complete and balanced kitten food is the best option.
@@AllAboutCatsYT what can i feed it i feed it chicken and some times egg

VERY IMPORTANT: declawing cats is VERY PAINFUL for the cat and is essentially cutting off the first bone in their paw. Please don't declaw!!!!
It’s actually. Illegal in some countries
