I Review BRITAIN'S OLDEST FISH AND CHIP SHOP - RIP OFF!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 лис 2024
- I'm at the most famous fish and chip ship in London today. Rock and Sole Plaice was opened in 1871 and has been serving their own batter recipe for over 140 years! This is a bit of history... but is it a rip off?

You'd have thought after 154 years they'd have had time to get it right 🙄
That was very funny, but very true
Indeed
Great post. Made me smile.
Different owners, different ingredients, different mindset, same shop.
Hope they've changed the oil since then! Lol.
My favourite part of your reviews is when you take your first bite and then thousands of us all hold our breath while you chew, furrow your brow as you concentrate on the flavours and then give your verdict! Just love you Gary ❤
Lol that's sooo true!!!! 😂😂
First bite....and then the 'thousand mile stare" into the distance and pause. 😂
@@pearlupthejunction " Is it the best Owl I've eaten? ...hmmmmm no. Is it the worst? Hmmmm certainly not!"
Ah I love you too... I believe they called it a "Garyism" now lol
😂😂 I always try and guess what he's gonna say post first bite.
These reviews are so important. Just because something is expensive, it doesn’t necessarily translate into quality. Overpricing for the sake of it is something the hospitality industry has decided to run with post pandemic
I think I saw £1.50 for a pickled onion. If that isn't overpricing I don't know what is.
Please put some thought behind your comments, the average cost of rent in that location is £125-145 per square foot! The average cost outside central London is £20-25 per square foot. That retail space will be paying around £140,000 p.a. in rent just to be there, rates will be around £40-65k a year on top! That will likely be 5-6x the costs of your local chippie!!!
Unless he goes 3/4 times these reviews are worthless, you would be lying if you haven't had a bad1 at your favourite restaurant
@@TimmyRipkey-zj7sg He might not go several times, but other reviewers might go there, so then you can build up an idea over several samples from different people. Gary also orders multiple dishes at each place he visits, so often shows that some dishes are good and others are less so at the same place.
Alleged Pandemic. Tripe it was.
Those salad leaves with the prawns are the saddest things I’ve seen all week. Another excellent video Gary, thank you for taking us along!
Thank you very much Christine
We didn’t meet this week then
£50 for fish, saveloy & chips! Thanks, Gary for saving me £50!
It will probably be £70 after next week's Reeves budget.
No worries
Oz is no better, Water costs more than beer these days.
Who would pay 8poud for saveloy and poxie chips ????????
@@tonyscott864 Gary.
I'm a simple woman, I see a new Gary video and I click.
Love when you give a little background on the restaurant. Also love how we never see cameramans face. Makes him mysterious like the stig. When I'm next in London will absolutely give some of your recommendations a go. Keep it up - you both deserve every success. Also this restaurant was such a let down!
That is wonderful to hear thank you, Linda
Nothing beats the local chippie. They know their area and market and have prices that reflect that. Wrapped up in paper, taken home to ear. Lovely. No paying for plates etc, local emouet.
Just good fish and chips.
It is far better to support a local chippy. I agree.
You are so polite, courteous and very humble when expressing your opinions....I'm so glad I found your channel. A cracking watch 👌 👏
Thank you so much!
Gary we love your diplomatic nature and the way in which you tell us the place was an overpriced rip off without actually saying it's an overpriced rip off. Looking forward to your Scottish reviews. Keep up the good work.
The clue's in the title
@@cottladI was about to say the same. Gary generally seems to be diplomatic and fair but he also calls a spade a spade.
Thank you very much
He literally says - it's a rip off...smh
I'm highly amused, another UA-cam food revue channel gave it a "Solid ten" about a year ago when he visited, but he gives everywhere he goes a solid ten, which makes the revues rather pointless if you are trying to judge if the food and the venue are any good. Your straight forward, down to earth, honest approach works for me, this place is definitely one to avoid when up town, thank you.
Thanks Mark. This was just quite simply overpriced
Solid ten gives it away, if you know 😂
@@puremagickx1118we don’t 😂
@@puremagickx1118 RMT... I unsubscribed over a year ago when every review was the same minimum of 9/10. I appreciate @GaryEats honesty.
Agree but you should see the one he did today 1 out of 10 it was a laugh!
I love how you are the most affable guy ever in the intros then turn into a complete savage when its time to judge the food.
I tried to be nice Josh 😳
@@Josh-yx2gy have we all been fooled by Gary? Is Gary the kind of fella that would kill you with kindness? Azzzz alwayzzzz I’m just joking!
At least he is honest and says it as it is. That's why Gary is so good.
😂🤣😅
Partly agree.
Gary is upbeat in the intro ~ but ~ in the main review is honest. NOT like some fools who just attack for the sake of being controversial and massaging their egos.
Main thing is that Gary comes over as genuine and humble at times. The kind of guy that you'd probably enjoy a natter with over a drink.
Love the way Gazza talked to the parsley and the lemon wedge as he moved them 😂
I’m a bit strange sometimes
I just press the thumbs up before even watching the video. Gary Eats has never let me down. Hope everyone has a great weekend.
That is very much appreciated thank you very much

I do exactly the same press on thumbs up as soon as I click on every video, knowing that the content will be first class ALWAYS! ❤for you and your son Gary.
I do the same thing. I know I'm going to enjoy Gary's review. So far, he hasn't let us down.
Like a lot of places they live off their history and not the quality of the food
I have to agree with you completely
Phew! I was hoping you’d do this one. I’m sick of the American youtubers who keep going there and putting reels up saying it’s the best fish and chips in London.
I thought it was disappointing Lee
Indeed and it was 10 years ago when I last went. It is definitely one of those places that people from another country go to and then say that British food isn’t good…
They just don't know what fish and
chips is real like.😊😊
@@paulogama5782 this American agrees with you.
Seppos know nothing!
Can't wait to see you up north. You don't get ripped off up north 😂 another great honest review 👍
Can't wait!
Not true. The worst meal I ever had was from a chicken place outside of Manchester Piccadilly. Cold chicken in soggy flavourless batter, cold soggy chips that had no seasoning, and it cost more than a KFC. If depression could be manifested as a meal, that was it.
Took one look at the chips and knew it was going to be rubbish, 😢Great review Gary 👍 I have a chippy about half a mile away that is excellent, tiny little place, but decent prices, and quality fish and chips , people drive across town just to buy them. And I love the fact that even though its not a weekly purchase , I am supporting a local business that has tight margins, but can still produce a cracking fish supper.😊🎉
Agree, they looked dry
Thanks 👍
Never stop what you’re doing Gary!! We absolutely love your reviews and looking forward to trying some recommendations!! If you’re ever in the Gloucestershire area, you need to try an Italian called Trattoria Settebello - great food!!
Thank you very very much and if I get there, I will definitely take a look
Gary, Thank you both for the video ! Look forward to Fish & Chips in Scotland !!
Thanks Jerry, take care
The gravy looked like an instant gravy and I’ll die by this but mint sauce in mushy peas is a game changer Gary. Another quality video as always by yourself sir. Thank you
I will definitely try the mint sauce, thank you very much
Oooh yes, I always love to drizzle some mint sauce into my mushy peas
Seeing your channel grow by the week is truly amazing, I remember subscribing at around the 36k mark now it’s at 170k and climbing! Keep up the great videos guys 😊
Thank you so much for sticking with me Andy
£50 for fish and chips - what has the world come to!! 🤣
The price was madness
Tourist trap!
Upcharging for the mushy peas and gravy when the fish and chips was already 20 quid is a slap in the face
Yes but that lot is well enough for 2 people . Remember , central London IS a tourist trap so one has the choice .
@@garrington120 that is 100 Australian dollars for fish and chips 3 prawns and an oversized hotdog, should be literally half that, the price is absolutely ridiculous no matter which way you look at it
My favorite reviews you do are for fish & chips, full English breakfast and Sunday roast. Those are three 3 meals I would have if I was able to go to England. A girl can dream. 🍽🍟🍳🥓
I’m pleased you enjoy them, Camille
Shepards Pie is another truly EPIC British meal, I'd rate it the highest among your pick but that's obviously subjective.
2 out of those 3 are best made at home.
@@davekennedy6315 ooh yeah. I would also try that. And Victoria sponge. Who says British food is boring?!
@camillebiernacki2041 I obviously LOVE our food but being English I am biased. But we also appreciate Indian, Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Turkish etc. I'm 50 but my mum and dad's generation and back we weren't exactly broad in our choices of food but things have improved a HUGE amount since. I have always loved trying new foods and also got into actually cooking different foreign dishes and customising traditional fare too. So I love food even more today than ever before haha! I'm not a big sweet/desert eater but Victoria Sponge IS LOVELY! My grandma used to make a truly EPIC sponge! Good luck in your British culinary exploration (we even have some of the highest rated restaurants in the world here surprisingly enough considering our reputation for rubbish food!)
Gary I absolutely love how honest you are. This review was fantastic especially given praise to the people that were serving and then explaining how bland various elements of the food was. I always enjoy it when your videos come out. Thanks so much I’m Looking forward to the Scotland trip ant.
Thank you so much AJ
I’m sure I’ve said this before, forgive me Gary you’re brilliant, but the unsung star of the show is the camera man, they told me it’s your son, does he do the edits too? Because it’s top notch. Imagine having to spend countless hours with yr dad complaining about food! 😂 ;) hats off to the “kid”!
Thank you and hey hey hey enough of that, it's me who gets fed up with him.. he doesn't stop moaning!! Very kind of you to say and take care
As long as he get's 50 percent of the earnings for all the video and edits. Eating the stuff and talking is the easy part.
Typical central London rip off, that price is ok for a posh steak dinner but this is fish and chips ! The chips looked sad and how hard is it to season the batter this is basic stuff.I’ve never liked mushy peas unless they are home made and it is super rare in a busy chippy.Come to Cambridge Gary plenty of great places to eat.
Went there last year with family from Switzerland. Sit down eat in was inclusive of service charge and yet the staff requested a tip on top and my wife, carried away by the occasion, paid it by card and I was furious. They serve lager/beer as well and the price was around £7 a pint. Again, I found this to be a rip off. It ruined the day out. Disgusting.
That is absolutely disgusting. I’m sorry you experienced that.
What a rip off.
For London, £7 per pint isn’t uncommon.
Welcome to rip off Britain. 😡😡
Staff requested a tip🤔😳? Could almost be classed as extortion. Demanding money. Call the police or simply say no🤔

Definitely no money left for afters, Greg

Gary, Tourist Trap is right. I worked for 25 years a few streets away from this eatery. Never went in as it was always busy with tourists and a quick look at the menu always brought on a 'How much?!'.
It is too expensive and set up for tourists
Brilliantly honest in your review again that’s the problem with some of these places they are tourist traps and consequently as a result of this they know they know can charge exactly what they want know questions asked best Channel on UA-cam well done lads
Thank you very much as always, you are completely right as a tourist trap they can charge what they want, thank you very much for your kind comment
I'm from Cornwall and I know a tourist trap when I see one. The strangest thing was when they wanted to seat people beside you when there were empty tables to your right. Odd. Almost like they wanted to stop your filming. Onwards and upwards Gary. All the best.
@@cousinjack2841 Try the Fryers delight in theobalds road. Not far away. Cheaper, better, more traditional. Beef dripping they say and if so unusual. My own favourite when I'm in the mood for something slap up. Somehow their tea is unusually good too!
Yes plenty of tourist traps in Cornwall!

@@TrudyTrew Yes, I used to have great haddock and chips there (when I used to live in London). The Fryers Delight was a great favourite with taxi drivers. I wonder if they still go there. Good to know it's still in business.
Get some salt and vinegar on those fish and chips.
I know right. I'm not entirely convinced of my lads parenthood as he has plain fish n chips. Get it doused in S&V!

3 empty tables and they put a whole company of people right next to you. Clearly a hint they wanted you gone. I suspect the guy overheard you. He was standing right next to you whilst you were saying how bad the sauce was.

Hi Gary,
Glad your finally coming to Scotland. Please remember to visit Gorgie Fish Bar for Fish and Chips and Homemade Steak Pie for a Takeaway if your in Edinburgh. Always have it with Salt and Sauce. Also i hope your not going to Anstruther Fish Bar. It's a rip off. Better off 4 miles further to Crail Fish Bar and you can sit in there also. Much quieter and plenty free parking outside.

Agreed. Anstruther is good but nothing special.
Second the Gorgie Fish Bar, was my local for years and always brilliant. Homemade steak pie was to die for.

@@GaryEatstold you before Gary , try Hiba ! They have 3 branches I think, just go for their chicken or lamb shawarma wrap deals, it’s under a tenner and ridiculously good… in London I have never had a decent fish and chips …. You could get 4 Saveloys for that in the midlands and up North. £8 the robbing ..........
To be honest, given it's Covent Garden, it could've been a lot worse. Prices and quality are about what I'd expect for the area. Quality might even be a bit better than I'd expect. But people commenting that this represents the standard of London should remember that the West End is its own thing, and doesn't represent the prices and quality you'll find elsewhere in the city.
Quite right. People don't realise the size and diversity of London. There is so much choice of food, much great quality and good value. Or pay a bit more and enjoy the many delights of a day out in Covent Garden and the West End.😊
@@splodge57 Exactly. Anywhere that attracts a lot of tourists will have a lot of tourist traps.
I expect the rates and stuff are pretty high in that area, but that skinny sausage and sad looking chips did not warrant 8 quid!!
The problem is the quality more than the price, I have no problem paying for top quality!
Average quality, crazy prices is about as bad as it gets for Covent Garden, there are actually some very nice eateries round the corner for less money. And just ten minutes from there I know (off the top of head) two great restaurants where you can feed two very well for the same total price!
We enjoy your reviews the excellent offerings and the not so they are all interesting. Look forward to your wanderings about the country, good to see you are able to have a foodie tour once again. Safe travels you two.

Your Headline was Spot on mate, Rip Off indeed!

not trying to start an argument but im not sure what seasonings you've had on fish batter before if this one was bland. Genuinely curious. Most literally just sprinkle salt on it I believe. Unlike fried chicken where the batter has tons of seasoning, with fish the flavour comes from the meat
I was thinking the same thing. Perhaps it was the oil or fat the food was cooked in.🤔🤷♀️
Beef dripping...
I would expect some salt in the batter at least, but not lots of spicing. A lack of salt does make a noticeable difference. Also, beer is often used in batter which will add flavour.
Beef dripping
Beef dripping or beer batter my friend, this just tasted sour and not very nice.

Seriously, I just had to entertain my two sisters and B-in-L's over from Toronto and Vancouver... They wanted to walk into the 'first' cafe/restaurant or pub we walked passed... I led them to the 'local' places and SAVED SO MUCH MONEY ! For instance, just around the corner from the 'Rock & Sole Plaice' - at the top end of Drury Lane are several cafes that all the locals and office workers go to. Just far enough from Covent garden, to stop the majority of tourists discovering them. Great freshly made food and good service. 'Cafe Verona', 'Cafe De Provence' (SPECIAL lunch time buffet for £10 !?), 'ECCO Pizza', 'Drury coffee, tea, breakfasts & cakes' (home made scrummy cakes!). FOUR PLACES to visit, 30 seconds from each other?
Come back to Grimsby/Cleethorpes for fish and chips at a fraction of that price! Try Ocean fish bar or Steels
I will in the future 👍

While I lived in Europe, I spent some time in England on vacation and usually stayed up in Yorkshire. Quite enjoyed the food and was puzzled by the bad reputation that English food has on the continent. Now we know, that bad reputation is totally based on tourist traps around London. Thanks for a great video. Always feel sorry for the staff because even the best service cannot rescue average food.
Thank you my friend, where did you live if you don't mind me asking?
YORKSHIRE fish and chips are the best
I'm not British (American) but so I am not qualified to rate fish n' chips. But honestly I think the batter looked just amazing!
@@RosieHarp Not really.
It looked brilliant but absolutely no flavour unfortunately 🇺🇸🇺🇸
Overpriced and rubbish, I just had cod and chips, £ 7.50. Get out of London!!
I am coming out of London very soon, Russell
On Wednesday I had haddock and chips for £5.80.
You mean Londonistan..? Khan's home ?
@@degsbabe oh were there no Muslims in London before Khan became Mayor? You daft cunt
@@degsbabethere's really no need for such a negative post on a largely positive channel.
Your a joy to watch Gary! Thank you. Love Marilyn xx
Thank you Marilyn xx🌹🌹
Love Gary he always compares the cost per item. Legend.
Thank you very much. I try my best.
When you're ready come to Australia Gaz, top notch Australian king prawns or sweet Tiger prawns fresh off the trawlers $ 28-$35 a kilo cooked..or perhaps try our world class large variety of fish , fresh fish fillets, crumbed or battered up to you. ✨🌠💫💖😃🌄🏖️👍
Hopefully, I can come and visit you next year 🇦🇺🇦🇺
Im loving the cameraman shots Gary going in for a right good close up of all the scran on the plates, im telling you my mouth is watering looking at them fish n chips just now. Looks outstanding.
Thanks so much, I'm glad you're liking the new shots👍
Salut Gary, I got home yesterday after almost 5 weeks in hôpital avec Sepsis. Google that disease and you will not feel like eating more likely throwing up! Tonight my lovely wife cooked me my favourite meal …… her spiced version of Chicken Satay, which is far removed from Thai Satay. So the point of this saga is that I now can really enjoy your videos again. I have an appetite and great food and I am home again. I love your channel, your enthusiasm and honesty. Bon courage mon ami toujours. Robert
As usual...
Great review!
So glad you've had your tag removed, thus allowing you to travel further afield 🤭
Looking forward to the next chapter 😊
Thank you very much!!
£50 - Phew! London is ridiculously expensive. I blame the mayor. And the tourists.
most cities in the UK have places charging the same prices, whose fault is that?
@@yetidodger6650 your fault
Unfortunately, these places know that they can get away with ripping off tourists who don't know any better.
It's got nothing to do with tourists or the mayor. London is one of the most wealthy cities in the world. It has a massive financial services industry and a huge IT industry. The city has many many high paid jobs. Where on earth are tourists comming from that is richer than London? Not many places that is for sure. Get a grip. You can hardly buy a 3 bed flat in London for less than 300k and it will cost you more than 500k if you want to be anywhere central. You think tourists are buying the houses? You think this place is expensive... for london you haven't seen anything.
Blaming the mayor is a good one😂
Anywhere that leaves the skin on the fish gets a minus 20 points off from the beginning.
If your highest praise for something is, "It's not bad" or "Well, it's not horrible" isn't great. 🤣
Thank, Gaz!
Haddock is always cooked and served with the skin on, to keep the flaky meat together.
@@Roy-gi5ul skinless haddock is just cod + £1:00
@@Roy-gi5ul No, it's not. I've had haddock and chips many times, many of our local chippies serve it instead of cod. I've not had it served with the skin on in years and I've never had an issue of it collapsing. 🤣
Skin on fish seems to be a London thing. I can’t stand it!
No problem Binty!
50pounds for fish and chips with a saveloy. UNBELIEVABLE they are taking the piss
It’s overpriced Dave unfortunately
Another honest and revealing video, Gary, although I'm not terribly surprised considering its location in centre of London's theatre district and a notable tourist trap. I suggest you try an honest chippie in the suburbs, like Seashore Fish Kitchen (3 Central Parade, KT6 4PJ) in Surbiton, where the queues are long, the prices are reasonable and the fish delicious.
Thank you for the recommendation. I know that fish and chips shop very well
If your visit is to the number one chip shop in Scotland is Anstruther Fish Bar, I hope it is better than when I visited it. My favourites are both at Newhaven Harbour, Edinburgh. Th e Fish Market and also Pier House Seafood Restaurant which is quite new but excellent with a great view of the harbour. Hope you enjoy Scotland.
Yes, no Anstruther fish bar for me. The Wee Chippy just along the road is much better. Murray's in Broughty Ferry and Marcos in Arbroath are both excellent
Has Anstruther gone downhill?
There’s a chipper in a tiny fishing village called Gourdon, midway between Montrose and Aberdeen. It’s won loads of awards, fish is great and the portions are excellent. There’s also a great pub next door where you can sink a swift pint while you wait for your order.
Like a lot of Scottish chippers it only sells haddock but it’s still really good. I make a point of going there every time I’m back in Scotland.
@@GaryEats Was there a while ago and was disappointed, it still seems to be getting rave reviews so maybe I visited on an off day.
@@GaryEats hi Gary, imo Anstruther has not gone downhill visited there in May , its still up there in the Champions League of fish n chips for me.
Love your show keep it going very well done and refreshing
That’s really appreciated, thank you
Premium Covent Garden prices for tourist and tourist youtubers, this is what makes Gary great.. goes to the location, already thinks about the points with the setting, location and service, then the important bit the food. Everything is rated together but with importance of is the good any food
Thank you very much
Thank You Gary for your straight forward review. Good to know when we go back to London what to look for in good fish and chips. Well done mate ! 👍👍 Jim and Harriet
Thank you Jim and Harriet
Another brilliant Vlog Gary--Love the thoughtfulness on your face as you tuck in.-I am always wary of huge menus as it smacks of "frozen"---We pop into London quite often so another place we may pass BUT certainly won't be eating there.---I think this is my favourite channel on UA-cam.
Thank you and much better to visit in London in my opinion
Again another heartwarming Video, thanks Gary.
Very good Review.
It looked really fresh but that special extra was missing.
Thank you Joan
Great Video as always Gary, this place used to be much better, just over recent years it’s got ridiculously expensive & now doesn’t justify its prices - it’s not that good. Strangely I still Smile when I walk past it & see the historical References on the walls - great memories but not heading back there!
It has a great history, but unfortunately it is trading to one market which is tourists
Gary you are simply the best reviewer keep up the good work and honesty
Thank you very much that’s really appreciated, Robert
