People like Mr Matthews should get honours for what they are doing for their local community! £3.00 for some families is live or die, as poverty gets higher due to the cost of living going up and up. There should be more people like this around the country because a lot of people don't get good food in their bellies. Well done Gary for showing us this inspirational person(s)
So lovely that there are altruistic people left. They looked perfectly adequate and a good portion. I’ve seen these before on local TV so hopefully they’ll get recognised at some point. The owner of the chippy deserves a big shout out for what he is doing for his community. These are the people/businesses we should be supporting. What a wonderful gesture. I live in a relatively poor area of the North East and you couldn't get that dish for under £12 up here!
Gary I have to say , that is one of the most eye opening reviews you have done £3 for what was a large in house smoked haddock chips and mushy peas , absolutely incredible , I said to you a couple of weeks ago I paid £25:50 for 2 regular cod and chips , you asked why are fish and chip shops charging these ridiculous prices , the reason is because fools like me pay those prices without complaint , this particular shop is showing that we have been ripped off for years ok he’s not making a profit because he’s helping his community which is an amazing thing to do , i would happily hand him a tenner and say keep the change because not only would I be getting what I would consider value for money but I’d be happy to think that I’d be helping this guy make a little bit of money for what he’s doing for his community , £1 for those onion rings is unbelievable , if I lived near there I think I’d probably weigh 30 stone as I’d more than likely be in there every night , great review as usual my friend 👍
If I was a cynic I'd think that some chippies ( and other takeaways ) have used the cost of living crisis, energy price hikes and fish 'sustainability' issues to charge unreasonably high prices 🤔. The chippie is an important part of a community, 10/10 to Mr and Mrs Matthews
I was having a gripe to my local chippy owner about the rising costs of fish and chips. He then proceeded to tell me that the last few years he’d been pushed to brink. He’s shut his seated restaurant - only opens 3 days Thur - Fri because he said energy costs (lighting, heating), council business rates sky high. He told me that cooking oil used to be £14 per vat it’s now £28, price of cod / haddock astronomical - esp if London based. He doesn’t have a fish market on his doorstep. He said cost of potatoes has also sky rocketed. He said he and his family have been in the fish a chip business for 50 years and he has never known it so bad. It’s not just about the fish a chips, it’s all the other overheads as well - rental, energy, staff, business rates, rising food and distribution costs. When someone who has been doing it for 20+ years wants to throw the towel in - you know it’s not good. I was so upset to hear it pushed him to such a desperate place. At the end of the day they also have to earn a living and support their families. ps he also told me that a lot of f&c owners had resorted to frozen fish / cheaper cuts to keep costs down but fresh fish was the one thing he would not compromise over!! This place is close to Grimsby - so probably far easier to get cheap fish. I am sure accessibility is a major factor in keeping costs down.
We need this Lady and Gentleman's postal address.....I say everyone send them a 'Thank-You' and 'Best-Wishes' cards from all around the UK!!!!.....Truly amazing people and Staff...thank's very much Gary for this review...and obviously (again) to Mr and Mrs Matthews too. @ 14:55 SECONDED. Well said Tel. You are also a gentleman. Gary and Son are just rocketing to stardom. I don't think I have seen more comments on another channel. That says it all. And the subs keep increasing on a daily basis. Have a lovely long weekend. Take care, S
This gives one pause for thought. In Canada here, we were encouraged to support local businesses during the pandemic. Now, after prices skyrocketed on everything, fish and chips, an order of 1 piece haddock and chips with coleslaw and roll, is $25.00 PLUS sales tax and GST (13% combined in Ontario) AND tip (15%). This man is a gem for giving to his community.
Even putting the cost aside, that's actually one of the best looking fish and chips I've seen on your channel. Factoring in the cost, the Mr and Mrs Matthews deserve an OBE, at least! At the price I don't know how you couldn't give it a flat 10/10.
I award Mr & Mrs Matthews a 10* Gary! How moving to see people who really care about their community and the fish and chips looked great too. They deserve all our best wishes 😊❤

For £3 I was expecting to see a token fish fillet about a third of what you received, a small portion of chips and mushy peas - and would have thought that good value - what you received for £3 was simply unbelievable - superb value - a real service to the community.
Ikr! All this talk about it being £3 and nobody mentioning that the portion is absolutely massive and would easily feed two. £1.50 fish and chips really
for 3.80 of your pounds you too can enjoy 1 small fish and chips but no peas and ketchup/vinegar are an extra cost and we have the nineth longest coastline in the world for 5 million people. sometimes the old protectionist economy of the 70's looks like the gold standard as everything is export price linked now!!! Don't mention the price of meat
Hats off to Mathews Chippy. It's simply incredible that he can and is providing an essential service to the community. Hope he stays open for many years to come i would live to come and visit in person one day as i live in West Berkshire. The last time I was in Grimsby was nearly 40 years ago. Full honours due to him and his staff.
Cheap as chips and hats off to the couple running Mathews. My parents in law ran a chip shop. People don't realise how much hard work is involved. My father in law eyed every spud before chipping them - the equivalent of five dustbins a day. After they closed, he would spend at least two hours cleaning down the equipment before going to bed then getting up at 7.00am to begin prep work for the day ahead.Your rant was pitch perfect. The owners are unsung heroes.
They deserve all the good karma coming their way. Bless them for their kind hearts. I'm sure many ppl Ned them. At this price point, ( note nice packaging even incl.) Doesn't it make you wonder....why is nobody else doing this, say @£5.00.

Out of interst is this fantastic business well supported by the peole you know ditectly in the community of Grimsby. I am assuming as it is going strong at these prices it is, but it would be good to know from a local?

There have been so many times I've forgotten to give them a like and then felt I've had to go back over several episodes to make sure I've given them that acknowledgement. I've thought that if Gary can spend hours personally replying to comments, it's no great effort for me to do that. I might have missed a few. Yes you are right - they deserve recognition and utter respect for their complete lack of greed and their community spirit. How amazing would it be to see far far more community focused businesses like this one. I really really think that they deserve a full 10, irrespective of it not being the best. They just scored top marks in my book. Well done. 🧡 Give me people like that any day over the likes of Gordon Ramsay.

Definitely agree with you
@@stevehornsby7727 Very much so. Hope Gary gives all his ad revenue back to the community or charity for this video too ... its only fair. Making money off the review on the back of a non-profit wouldn't be right.
@@nodefour That's very true. When some reviewers say it cost so much money for a small steak but they're not really paying for it but their viewers. Hopefully Gary thinks the same
Their definitely needs to be more like those owners, and i agree with Gary, they deserve recognition for it.
@@stevehornsby7727 - you and the guy you're responding to need a BIG reality check. Or were you taken in by the hilarious inaccurate 'how much does this guy earn from UA-cam' video that was put up by that other atrocious channel? Educate yourselves.
The owner of the chippy deserves a big shout out for what he is doing for his community. These are the people/businesses we should be supporting. What a wonderful gesture. I live in a relatively poor area of the North East and you couldn't get that dish for under £12 up here!
I agree you completely. I think the owners are doing a fantastic job for the local community Lisa.
£3!!! That is unbelievable. As a Londoner, you'd need a De Lorean, 1.21 Gigawatts, and go back to 1980 to pay that for fish and chips!
Marty!!
My local on £4.80 for cod and chips
@@PixelVogue What is it Doc ?

@@user-638jdjdpoopmine 5.50 here in sheff....london just silly but they pay cos they loaded
Thank you very much Deano. It's astonishing what Mr Mathews has done for his community!
Regular access to £1 onion rings would probably end me 🤣. Good thing I live up Teesside way a good 2 hours drive from here LOL.
You are right, they all have. But so have their suppliers etc. It's all greed. And everyone has jumped on the bandwagon.
I think the fact they knock it out for 3 quid proves beyond all doubt that this industry has been mugging off it's loyal customers for a long time.
This is absolutely incredible, loved it here
That is a fact, a lot of food establishments have hiked their prices by a lot more than the rate of inflation. Quite a disgusting practice it is too.
Please do! Thank you
That’s how to review fish and chips. Stood by the road eating them out the box next to a bush. Proper review.
Thanks George lol
Meal on me! And what a meal! Thank you Mr & Mrs Mathews and thanks to you Gary and "Bob" the cameraman :)
That's incredibly kind of you Simone. Please take care and if there's anything I can do, please let me know by email.

Who would have thought that the poor man's F&C would become a luxury !
Some people would have had F&C two or more days a week nowadays once a month would be great.
Dad society we've turned out to become....griffters vs Mr&Mrs Matthews.
Hope the 👑 can be alerted to this state of affairs and award this couple an OBE at least.
The world needs more people like Mr and Mrs Mathews. Nice to see good people celebrated.
Totally agree with you
Totally and utterly agree with you
Gary you look so hungry like you just broke ou5 of jail …! 😂😂 😂
The King should come by and patronize this shop, at least as a show of his concern for his people.
That fish and chips looked better than the £40 jobby down in harrods 😂Worlds gone mad, but Matthew's keeping his local community sane.
I agree completely Harold thank you
Gary,
Mr & Mrs Mathews are not the only people doing something for the community, it's your review which hopefully will enhance possibly the cheapest fish and chips in the UK.
You get the thumbs up & also deserve an award for looking after the public with your lovely awesome reviews 👌
Well done for travelling & helping local businesses!
Hats off to you as well mate,
Can't fault ya 👍
Great review!!!!

@@GaryEats I just continue to enjoy the channel as always, Your the best!!! Thanks for the kindness, not just to me but all of the subscribers, it's an awesome community mate 👍
He's not a charity, it's a buisiness there to make a profit though i struggle to see how he does on those prices with overheads etc.
@@julianwebb9169 I agree with you Julian, I honestly can't see where any profit is being made mate.
Well said Tel. You are also a gentleman. Gary and Son are just rocketing to stardom. I don't think I have seen more comments on another channel. That says it all. And the subs keep increasing on a daily basis. Have a lovely long weekend. Take care, S
What an absolute gent, rare to find store owners with such integrity
I agree with you 100% the owners are food heroes
There's not one person here in the USA in the food industry that can be compared to this kind gentleman. What a blessing he is to his community.
Yes its amazing. He's turned his shop into a charity for the community.
I completely agree with you, thank you Terry
This gives one pause for thought. In Canada here, we were encouraged to support local businesses during the pandemic. Now, after prices skyrocketed on everything, fish and chips, an order of 1 piece haddock and chips with coleslaw and roll, is $25.00 PLUS sales tax and GST (13% combined in Ontario) AND tip (15%). This man is a gem for giving to his community.
1 piece halibut dinner as above is $29.99 plus tip and taxes.
I agree with you completely, Joanne. The owner needs so much credit.
Even putting the cost aside, that's actually one of the best looking fish and chips I've seen on your channel. Factoring in the cost, the Mr and Mrs Matthews deserve an OBE, at least! At the price I don't know how you couldn't give it a flat 10/10.
I completely agree with you. One of the better ones for sure
Well done Gary for advertising the ‘little guy’ who shows up the others! Hats off to the guy who runs the chippy and his outlook on life. Knight him!
Anytime Mike. they deserve it more than anything
The funny thing is , is that its not only cheap, but that the portion size, quality and flakiness of that haddock is amongst the best ive seen.
It was excellent all things considered!
The good man that runs that shop must be a treasure in his community I wish we had someone like him down in Cornwall.
I agree with you completely Alan 💯👍
I award Mr & Mrs Matthews a 10* Gary! How moving to see people who really care about their community and the fish and chips looked great too. They deserve all our best wishes 😊❤
I completely agree with you. They deserve everything in the world
Gary 10+ for Mr& Mrs Mathews. Thank you for your review.
Hello GARY! I'm so so happy to see you in my area! Grimsby is my HOME TOWN GARY! I'm honoured you have added us to your travels. I haven't seen the review yet so hoping you enjoyed it, sir. Everyone in the comments can we all please please pull together and get this wonderful gentleman to 250k subs before Xmas please?
Wow thank you Jay! Very kind of you to say, I'm back near Grimsby again on Friday!
I agree with you completely, Martin. They are doing a tremendous job.
for 3.80 of your pounds you too can enjoy 1 small fish and chips but no peas and ketchup/vinegar are an extra cost and we have the nineth longest coastline in the world for 5 million people. sometimes the old protectionist economy of the 70's looks like the gold standard as everything is export price linked now!!!
I think they are doing a wonderful job for the local community
Cheap as chips and hats off to the couple running Mathews. My parents in law ran a chip shop. People don't realise how much hard work is involved. My father in law eyed every spud before chipping them - the equivalent of five dustbins a day. After they closed, he would spend at least two hours cleaning down the equipment before going to bed then getting up at 7.00am to begin prep work for the day ahead.Your rant was pitch perfect. The owners are unsung heroes.
I completely agree Patrick. So much hard work goes into these shops
Excellent! They deserve a medal 🏅 10/10 🎉🎉
Thank you so much 😀
They deserve all the good karma coming their way. Bless them for their kind hearts. I'm sure many ppl Ned them. At this price point, ( note nice packaging even incl.) Doesn't it make you wonder....why is nobody else doing this, say @£5.00.
I live in Grimsby (not born here my partner is though) what I love about grimsby is the community spirit they have ! Hope you enjoyed your time in Grimsby Gary ❤
Out of interst is this fantastic business well supported by the peole you know ditectly in the community of Grimsby. I am assuming as it is going strong at these prices it is, but it would be good to know from a local?
Really did Siobhan, thank you
@neilboulton9813 absolutely many people I know in Grimsby and Cleethorpes too often come here on a Thursday or a Friday night after work and treat themselves the staff are always very polite and care alot about the community x
@GaryEats fabulous have a lovely weekend Gary ❤️
Really enjoyed this one, seems this guy is doing it just for doing good for the community. They own 5 chippies if what I read is correct and he owns a fish supply but still, nobody forces them to provide this kind of good food at that low price. Wonderfull and great respect.
Yes they've done a great job. The haddock isn't smoked, I had a mix up with the owners but the fish itself is fantastic for the price
Brilliant. Hats off to the Mathew's, quite literally helping their community to survive.
An amazing initiative
Does anyone else here automatically give Gary's videos a thumbs up before even watching them, just knowing they're going to be good?
There have been so many times I've forgotten to give them a like and then felt I've had to go back over several episodes to make sure I've given them that acknowledgement. I've thought that if Gary can spend hours personally replying to comments, it's no great effort for me to do that. I might have missed a few.
Nowadays, I've simply made it a habit to give an instant like so I don't forget. Never had to take back the compliment!
Thanks again for giving us another enjoyable video full of warmth, humour and insight Gary. Now I'm going to actually watch it!

Thanks for visiting our town Gary, was once a thriving fishing port, but even now, most of the chippies round here will impress. This particular one is reasonable, but the price is astounding, and as it's situated in one of the most deprived areas of Grimsby, let alone the Country,it's much appreciated by the residents. Thanks so much once again for coming over(hope you saw nothing to shock you round there),and thanks for the promoting the chippy

It really does lift your spirits when you hear of such good and kind hearted people as this. Okay it wasn't Michelin star but portion wise and price it must be a God send for local families on a very tight budget. I bet a lot of people have paid an awful lot more for a lot worse.

Remarkable. One portion could feed a family of four. Incredible compassion.

Best in the country in terms of how many good fish and chip shops there is in Grimsby and Cleethorpes.
I remember even the best Fish N Chips shop in Beaconsfield called Smiles used to be £5 for Cod and Chips 😮 now only 2 years later it's £14 what justification is there for these high price increases? We need more like Matthews Chippy to help struggling families eat good food 🙏
They want to make more money. They have to be making money because people barely go there anymore and they still have enough cash to stay open
@@Matt77125 Aha 👍 cheers for explaining this and I guess the rent prices in Beaconsfield are very expensive nowadays, The govt did not help small businesses by allowing staff to claim Furlough for 2 years and not show up to work where as people like me who work in the care sector had to turn up everyday during the Pandemic

Everything has shot up in price since covid. Gas, electric, wages, food. Businesses don't get their energy bills capped, unlike household bills, either. At £3, they are no profit at all and i hope they survive.

Great review, and bang on! These are the food places need recognition and awards, how amazing they do this for the community.
Thank you very much for your excellent comment
A very heartwarming video, I'd imagine that for people in Grimsby they are thankful that someone is looking out for them and making sure the occasional treat isn't out of their reach. This is why I like Wetherspoons. We may not all like the owner, the quality may not always be great, but it gives people on a limited budget a chance to eat out once in a while without breaking the bank
most of the fish that lands in Grimsby these days sadly comes in by lorry

Absolutely incredible what these couple are doing for their community. I still don't know how they are even covering basic costs though. But hats off to them. Yes you are right - they deserve recognition and utter respect for their complete lack of greed and their community spirit. How amazing would it be to see far far more community focused businesses like this one. I really really think that they deserve a full 10, irrespective of it not being the best. The price plays a significant part in our judgement of all consumables and whilst we take into consideration ethical buying and environmental impact - what about community impact. They just scored top marks in my book. Well done. 🧡 Give me people like that any day over the likes of Gordon Ramsay.
