- I'm back at the popular UK restaurant, Miller & Carter to try out their brand new Sunday roast sharing platter priced at £66.50. I've been to Miller & Carter before and had a few mixed experiences, let's hope this is a good one today!

As someone that works at Miller and Carter (leaving in 2 weeks) I can tell you most people come in and are disappointed by the "roast" my sister came in and tried it and said it was really bad, I felt so embarrassed
Anyway it can be improved?
I went to the one in Worcester, got a rib-eye, fries, some onion thing and the bone marrow sauce. It was lovely, and it was nowhere near this price. Shame, really
@@rhodaborrocks-dy3fb not the 'roast' though as reviewed.
@@s125ish They can cook the food properly for a start.
@@benzinapaul7416 it was just as much food, troll. And when you get a rib-eye from a restaurant or pub, you can guarantee it!s more expensive than the roast
No mint sauce or redcurrant jelly,
no horseradish or mustard,
no sage and onion or bread sauce,
I would expect the lot at that price😲
thank you for sharing
I thought of sage and onion or bread sauce, but I would never eat chicken with lamb and beef. In fact I'd never eat lamb and beef together. They all need to be eaten separately in my opinion. I like mint sauce and redcurrent jelly on my lamb, but not together. The best roast lamb I've eaten was bought from a butcher in Leyburn, North Yorkshire. It came off the Dales, and didn't need either of the sauces. The moorland herbs had already flavoured the meat. I'll always remember that Sunday lunch, Nicky, wherever you are now.
@@pippin1ful I'd eat puppy and kitten together if it was nicely cooked. Catnip sauce and a Winalot broth in the same bowl.
Just joking PTEA/UA-cam snowflakes.
Mint sauce was more than needed
Oh that's even more criminal smdh 😤😤
If it was me I would ask them for the various sauces if they've not been already offered to you at the time of the food arriving.....you can't go through the meal assuming don't have. If you have asked and they don't have ( which I would struggle to believe) then that's one issue . But if you haven't asked and it's just a case of the staff being untrained in the small detail ( an important detail at that ) then saying the service was exemplary raises my eyebrows Gary.😟
My thoughts are you can't just complain if it's just assumed without fact.. lol
That was the most polite way of saying that meal was overpriced mediocrity. ❤
Very overpriced and mediocre
That was definitely not worth the money
I have recently been over to the US. This reminds me of those BBQ places I saw over there that do a plate of food for anything between 70 - 100 dollars. Great, but totally not worth the money.
Today I am 75 and I got to spend part of it with you!!! Thank you Gary, you always make my day even when you get disappointed!!! This old grammy loves you!!! ❤❤❤

I'm fed up with having restaurant meals served in kit form. Chips in wee pots, meat on boards, veg in a separate pan...Just put it all on a bloody plate and FEED me.

For £66 I’d expect shares in the company. Wouldn’t even consider it at that price.
I’m with you mate, I don’t care what people think…far, far too high a price for me!
You’ve clearly never eaten in top restaurants
Miller and Carter is not a top restaurant
@@timsutherland4033 there’s a big difference between top restaurants, with the best chefs using the finest ingredients charging £66 and a chain pub doing the same for a Sunday roast mate! If you’re happy to get ripped off, crack on 👍
Same here. I had a lovely three course Sunday roast recently for £20
Hi Gary, Toby carvery, Goring by Sea near Worthing £10.79 for the main course, £2 for dessert. All you can eat! I tried it last Tuesday and the food was fantastic. 😊
Good stuff Alan
Hey Alan, if you sign up with the Toby carvery app, they sometimes do special offers. This week I had a full carvery for £6. I usually take my own drink though to keep the bill low because they charge £4.25 for a glass of pop! I do love a good old fashioned roast.
Toby carvery is rotten compared to miller and carter 😂
I would pay £30 more each not to go in a Toby Carvery
'That needs help'. My favourite quote about that sad looking piece of lamb.
Yes needed a lot of help Kieran
Lost my job last month at age 64 . Mostly eating potatoes and onions ( fried ) . Breakfast at that price 😂 I absolutely love your videos 😂 Thank you for keeping me sane in these crazy times ❤
Jesus, that sucks, hope you're alright!
It's really vicious to lay people off that close to retirement. They know full well that it's close to impossible to get hired at that age! 🤬
I hope things are going to work out for you.
I'm so so so sorry to hear that. You will be back in work very soon, please take care and all the best.
Jeez that sucks. It should be mandatory to pay one month severance for each year of service. The company I work for more, or less does this for layoffs and my coworkers your age sometimes keep hanging on hoping to get laid off rather than voluntarily retire 😂
Mind you they don’t do it out of charity, it’s to avoid wrongful termination issues.

No Carrots? No Peas? No Mash? No Sprouts? No Parsnips? No Cauli? - It looked more like what you'd get left over from a fight from the left overs of a Mixed Grill and a Roast - And they have the cheek to charge you £65 to do all the plate prepping too.
One Yorkie??????? - You need atleast two! or more! - 6 if you live in my house, and the other six to eat with ice-cream for dessert!

The Beefeater was very popular. Sad to see it go.
I’ve been to the Miller & Carter once, never again, overpriced and not at all welcoming.
No roast potatoes and calling it a roast dinner? They are not even trying!
Surprised they even bothered with the meat!
Yeah, but at least they give you 5 of them, so what are you complaining about?

Gary, great video as always 👍 ❤
I just watched it with my lovely mum and the first thing she said was "wheres the brussel sprouts and carrots.. Gary should have a “I’d eat here” guide. I hate these chain pubs with a vengeance.
I suggested this and I think he’s got something planned. I for one would make use of it when travelling
Would love a Gary recommends book ... far more relevant and trustworthy than any other guide
I have something planned for the website!
Like a food hygiene rating sticker in the window with a picture of Gary saying ‘let’s give it a go…’ 😁
Gary’s website is already pretty brilliant. If you select “Reviews” on Gary’s website, he’s got all the restaurants he’s reviewed pinned on a map and the recommendations have gold pins.
What a real gem your video channel is, I don't go to restaurants often but I always leave disappointed and left with the feeling I could do better at home, sometimes it's so bad i'am left offended, with your channel it's a good reference to sort out the good from the bad saving time money and disappointment, just subscribed, last but not least the way you come across is very honest and likable, I hope your channel grows.
Thank you so much Marco. Please take care.
The Finnish side of me says toss it all back into the kitchen. Don't force yourself to eat - especially not at that price. And refuse to pay for food not delivered as requested.
You are known for being very friendly, but complaining about bad food is sometimes needed. And if they can't even get new potatoes done right, it is BAD! They are awfully popular around here.
what does the french side say?
Thank you, I'm not sure this needed to be sent back... it was just all round a poor experience Finn.

As you rightly say Gary " Stick to what you do best", and that is steaks. I've had some great meals at Miller & Carter but not pretend roast dinners, your score is on point here.
Thank you Kevin
I agree I wouldn't go there for a roast as u can almost just as good at Toby and carvery or some other pub. Don't get me wrong this is 1 of my fav restaurants but their main market is steaks and I wouldn't pay a premium price for a roast just because of their brand name
@@MampsUKI mean, you do have one of their best steaks on this roast meal, leaps and bounds above Toby's carvery, that's shocking
@Liamfolz well all I will say is if u want a roast u would want it both at a good price and of quality sadly in the case of miller and carter they are mainly good when it comes to steaks and ribs. Buying a roast at premium prices just because of their name is ill advised just like those other places Gary visited like Gordon ramseys chain restaurants which is just a brand and is no guarantee your gonna enjoy the food even at high prices
I like the way you scrutinise the more expensive eateries and rightly so.Its obviously an affluent area but that is really expensive for what it is,there is a reason why these type of places only last 2 years max, thanks Gary
Looks can be deceiving, it’s not an affluent area, there isn’t a queue of people in Worcester Park paying £66 for lunch. He reviewed TAS which is 1/2 mile down the road and that’s less than half what this costs and it’s loads better. M&C are so out of touch
If you charge high prices, you have to serve good food
I started watching your videos recently, and I have to say you're by far the most enjoyable food reviewer I have come across.
Thank you very much Jordan, incredible kind of you to say
I can get myself nearly 2 weeks of groceries for myself for that price! Theres a lovely cafe in newark I go to regularly and they do a full english breakfast for 4 pound 50, good quality and excellent value, even comes with unlimited refill coffee. Great review as always!

5:09 Those are tinned potatoes chucked in an air fryer for 30 minutes.
Yes really poor
Their not tinned lol
Those yorkies are definitely brought in ready made, the size and shape is too uniform for home made yorkies, they’re straight off a factory machine
You’d think a bigger serving of potatoes and additional carrots and peas wouldn’t cost that much extra to make it a decent dinner
Agreed
I'm actually making a roast right now to celebrate our Canadian Thanksgiving! (Turkeys were unaffordable this year). As a cook, it's really sad to think people pay big bucks for overcook meats. The whole point of going out is that it should be better than homemade!
Just buy a leg! 🐔
Happy Thanksgiving!
Happy Canadian thanksgiving , hope your roast is better than Gary's
The thing with M&C is that in a world where companies like Heinz and Richmond and Cathedral City rule their respective fields despite being far from the 'best' available, it's clear that image and brand is more important to most people. Miller and Carter present their establishments like high end eateries and I think it genuinely fools people into thinking it's better than it is. Their food is fine - I don't think it's *BAD* or anything, but it's not good value.
I don't think they're competing with Toby Carvery by the way, as they are owned by the same company
Of course, I more meant competing in the same location
Here is a LESSON
Don`t go to chain restaurants...especially ones with *celebrity* chefs names on the door
I know You only really rate food, but You have to stay a night in the Ruskin Hotel in Blackpool! Not just a great hotel for the entertainment, but a "high quality" all you can eat breakfast is their selling point! Great quality and value for only £12!
Another excellent and honest review-this is exactly what food lovers like me appreciate. You were generous with your 3/10 rating. These restaurants often take advantage of customers and don't seem to care about quality. The chicken looked dry and inedible in the video, yet they boldly advertise it as 'succulent' on the menu-ridiculous!
Your cameraman 📹is doing a fantastic job with the editing, and the audio clarity in each vlog is spot on.
Thank you so much for such a wonderful comment, means a lot
I'm sitting here in absolute shock and horror at what you get for that price.

Yes! That's $128 Aussie dollars. I could buy two sheep for that. 😆🐑🐏
@@aussiemouth747 Blimey. Aussie sheep are expensive. 😂
Today made myself a 3 egg omelette. Hot peppers, diced onions, shredded cheddar, 2 pieces toast, fried up some left over mashed potatoes, coffee with cream. At most 5 dollars CAD, so about 3 pound sterling. And no service charge.🙂
Very nice Garfield
Wow such an inspiration!
No way is that worth £33.25 each! I gotta say NO!NO!NO for crispy potatoes. That ain’t no substitute for proper roast potatoes 😢 Fair comments as usual Gary
Really poor stuff Natalie, hopefully people give it a miss and save their money
Ive been to my local Miller & Carter maybe 5/6 times and it always been excellent. When it comes to a Sunday roast I’d rather go to a proper carvery establishment and pay a 6th of the price.
Good review. Why put garlic on greens which have a subtle flavour? What would you taste but garlic. The portion size of the meal was good even if the quality wasn’t.

Hi Gary
Miller and Carter are definitely a mixed franchise. Some branches are very good and some are very poor.
My advice to them is just do a proper Sunday Lunch and do it well or just stick to steaks as you say. This is a very poor expensive idea that’s just not worth it on any level. 3/10 for me on this one.

Expensive no longer guarantees quality ..Thats what your channel has taught me Gary.. all the best
66.50 is approx $132 Australian. Honestly I would expect the chef to put on a song and dance for that price. Also why can't they serve it up normally instead of like an IKEA put it together piece of furniture. Another disappointing meal Gary. 😢
Yes far too overpriced my friend

As someone who works at M&C, its makes me laugh people are willing to pay £66 for 90% frozen food, hilarious!

All that money for a faux roast- methinks not. Thanks for taking one for the team Gary ( and cameraman).

Outrageous pricing as well.
Just had a (Canadian) Thanksgiving dinner at my sister-in-law’s and what I ate was miles ahead of your meal.

Its the same with all these major chain restaurants? If i want a roast, the dedicated places like Toby are difficult to beat, both in quality and value.
£66 i would put a whole small chicken < flavoured and whole lamb leg flavoured with mint garlic Onions fresh herbs creamy mashed potatoes peas carrots Cheesy cauliflower 3 steaks 🥩 Perfect size Yorkshire pudding are on point also a bottle of wine 🍷 to go with it
Haven't even finished the video but I can tell it's not going to be a good one when the greens and Yorkshire pudding are the only things that get Gary smiling.

I was brought up to never season food until tasted as its rude. That is why salt pepper etc is on the table. Everyone has different tastes and requirements.
Of course
You're obviously British😅😅😅 unseasoned food is a crime

You are doing a great job debunking these over-priced mediocre places. The problem is there are so many people with money to burn (or expense accounts) these days that they won't think twice paying prohibitive prices for a so-so experience, whereas regular folks get let down and have to pay up with their hard earned cash.

Underwhelming then, what a pity.
When the food arrived it all looked so good on those wonderful close ups.
Camembert with mash doesn't sound like a good combination to me.
Thanks for another top quality video 👍
Being a war baby I loved cheese mashed potato, cooked with grated English hard cheese at primary school. I loved it and still do. Camembert is good with a baguette fresh out of the oven, but not in mashed potato. If it is ripe, it will be runny without heating and mixing with mashed potato: no! Compté or Cheddar are a better option, but don't use 36month aged Compté: that would be sacreligious!
Totally agree Rosie and thank you 😃
@@pippin1ful I still love cheesy tatties as well as we call them.

Lovely to watch an honest reviewer not afraid to call someone out 👍
The way I see it these places need honest criticism in order to up their game , I'm one of those rare people that when asked if I enjoyed my meal tell them what they don't want to hear there and then , it often catches them off guard as they're probably used to most saying it was very nice when in truth they can't wait to get out of the building.
Very fair score for such an average meal very overpriced.
Those potatoes 🤢
Thank you very much, hopefully they improve
Looks like they have just used ingredients from other dishes on their menu and bought in some frozen yorkshires. The chef overcooking all the meat didn’t help either. Nothing wrong with Toby Carbery roast as long as you get there before midday. Thanks for the warning Gary. I’m really looking forward to your Fallow Sunday Roast review. I’ll be going to the Canary Wharf branch next year for my birthday. My favourite restaurant.
What a shame! We went midweek recently to M&C for lunch, and had a lovely meal, and it was a very good value set menu. But at £33.00 per meal here, it needed to be excellent! You're absolutely right to point out the negatives in order that they might make improvements. Our local pub does a fantastic Sunday roast at just over half that price with proper roast spuds and cauliflower cheese!
Glad you enjoyed it, chains are very unpredictale
True man of the people. You’re never conned by price. Being on a low sodium diet myself, I would probably be pleased by the lack of seasoning, but there is no excuse for dry meat. Deep fried ‘roast’ potatoes has become quite commonplace. I always associate crispy Yorkshire puds with having been kept hot while standing around. I also remember Clement Freud commenting that a good cook uses garlic to bring out flavours but if you can actually taste the garlic then the chef has added too much (I think we’ve all been conned into liking the taste of garlic - the same way Americans like burnt coffee aka Starbucks).
Thank you for this episode. I have never liked dishes with mixed types of meat. If you had just the steak with the rest, it would have been that much better.
I think they leave food under the heat lamps to long. You almost need to order one level back so when it sits it can finish cooking.
I couldn't agree with you more
I think your assessment was fair and accurate Gary .
We actually had an excellent roast this afternoon. Bought a pork joint with stuffing from M&S this morning. Cooked roast potatoes, roasted carrots, shallots and some broccolli with gravy and some yorkshires. It really was excellent, I know we had to cook it and clean up but the quality was better than any sunday roast I've had in a pub/restaurant. The prices/quality just aren't there in this country unless you spend an absolute fortune. Much prefer Waitrose/M&S products and cook at home.
Another fine video Gary, Have a question for you , probably been asked before. When you give a bad review, do you get any feeback from the owner/management from that establishment.
Do you think they see this ? Do they listen ? Always, top notch Gary. 👍👍 Jim and Harriet
I don't but I did give feedback to the manager today, he was a nice chap!
Oofty high price -last time I was that disappointed when paying so much was when Dunfermline lost to the septic (Glasgow-via Dublin-Celtic) at Hampden in a cup final well done for giving it a go fella should try “monteiths” on Edinburghs high street (I do not work for them but I’d love to hear your thoughts) where they do a slow roast piccanha apparently-great video as ever ta
Far too overpriced! A big Dunfermline fan Duncan?
Definitely a 1st date behind you Gary 😂
I am sure they were delighted to be an extra in Gary's video.
I don't know if it is still good, but Ye Olde Mute Swann in Thames Ditton always did a really nice Sunday Roast. If you go in the summer months when the weather is lovely, it is nice to have it outside overlooking the river. If you go in the winter months, try and get a table in the section with the fire place as that is lovely and cozy.
Gary, as always great to see you and the Cameraman (I know we don't see him) food was poor for the price! But we get to see you so there is a silver lining, hugs from Cyprus. 💙🤗😋🍽️
A couple of things 4:07 the chicken has not been cleaned properly on the wing. I hate that. What cut of lamb is that? The water bottle and glass can do with a clean up and so the lamp shade. As always.... I like your honesty.
Very good eye and thank you Marius
Good points mentioned and well said Gary, i have an idea. For all eateries awarded 5 points or less, allow them an opportunity to redeem themselves by returning in two weeks for the same service. Regards Leonard.
Hi Gary, we’ve just been to The Village Pub in Barnsley near Cirencester and their roast was absolutely sensational, amazing service and seriously quirky..part of The Pig Group. Very highly recommended. I must be one of your first subscribers, still really enjoying and trying your recommendations.
Expensive and a funny old mixture of meats, dry or not cooked to order. Sadly, deserving of that score Gary.
Great video as always Gary! My guess for 15:46 is simply they don't want the roast trade. Both Toby Cavery and Miller and Carter (+ dare I mention Harvester) are owned by the same parent group 'Mitchells & Butlers'. They probably don't want to cannibalise trade from the Toby Cavery Sunday cash cow and so Miller and Carter don't offer an attractive roast option - my theory anyway! Keep up the good work!
There is no doubt , avoid pup chains ! I go to family run village pubs where all the locals go , never been disappointed at all at a reasonable price 👍
Agreed
