Excellent quality. The owner actually knows where his fish has come from. I think it's pretty easy to know why the fish and chips is better in the North East. A lot (most?) coastal towns have their own fishing fleets, like Whitby, Grimsby etc. So it's basically coming off the boat to the chippy. Even my little village (Marske) had fishing boats.
Had my most local fishmonger get annoyed at me when I asked if had fresh cod (after some issue where supply was interrupted) , he said yes, it came in this morning freshly frozen. I just said 'isn't that an oxymoron?' Probably about 10 months now since been in that shop, and zero plans to ever again.
@@karlp8484 I've nothing much against frozen fish, there's always a few boxes/packs of them in my freezer, but they're bought in the frozen food aisle of whichever shops I go to. It's a different expectation when in a fishmongers for a fresh cod getting told it was fresh ( or freshly) frozen, it's like getting told that the 'catch of the day' came in a few days earlier. I'm in Dublin, so near enough to fishing areas that they don't need to freeze. I get the term fresh frozen with veg, picked fresh then frozen, but noone would then call them fresh green beans or peas or whatever.

"Rock Salmon" or Dogfish (common/spur) is the smallest of the shark family, and like all shark is a superb fish to eat; but these days you rarely see rock on menues, one normally sees huss, being passed off as rock, but it is a totally different fish, still very nice to eat (another small shark), but a slightly different taste. Love the videos. Tony & Linda, Portsmouth, UK
So, is that similar to the "Flake" I had in Melbourne years ago? They said it was a variety of shark and was the nearest thing they had to white fish eaten in Britain
Rock salmon aka lesser spotted dogfish is related to Bull Huss aka greater spotted dogfish. Spurdog is another species of small shark related to the dogfish, with a nasty venomous spike. You might also see Smoothhound (great angling fish) on the menu as Rock.
Hi Gary, I stumbled across your channel by accident and I love your reviews! Tory and Labour leaders criticise ‘tedious culture war’ over Golden Chippy mural The mural was covered by national and regional news outlets. Credit: The Greenwich Wire Greenwich’s Labour and Conservative leaders have united to criticise the “tedious and disingenuous culture war” spread in the media over a chip shop’s Union Jack mural. Anthony Okereke and Matt Hartley set aside election campaigning at last week’s council meeting following repeated stories wrongly claiming that the owner of the Golden Chippy on Greenwich High Road had been ordered to remove a mural because it featured a Union Jack. The chip shop is in the tightly-policed Ashburnham Triangle conservation area where any changes to buildings - including murals - have to be approved by the council BBC London, the Daily Telegraph, the Daily Mail, GB News and the News Shopper all ran stories about the mural in the last two weeks of March. The Golden Chippy was once named the best in London and has an eye for publicity - a similar story appeared in the Evening Standard in 2018, this time about a 17-foot sign above the shop also bearing a Union Jack. Conservative leader Hartley - who said the shop sold “cracking fish and chips” - told the meeting: “This media coverage continues to appear despite the story being repeatedly and comprehensively debunked. “These stories continue to be shared and pushed online by individuals who are trying to create some kind of tedious, disingenuous culture war. Hartley conceded that the shop sold “cracking fish and chips” Credit: The Greenwich Wire “The council’s request for the mural to be removed is a simple and straightforward and really quite boring planning enforcement issue relating to the conservation area. The fact the Union Jack happens to appear on this mural has absolutely nothing to do with the council’s request for it to be removed.” “Our residents rightly expect that everyone should play by the same rules when it comes to the planning system. So would the leader agree with me that this issue is actually a simple question of that good old fashioned British sense of fair play.” Okereke, the Labour leader of the council, responded: “This council is extremely proud of our country. I would reiterate, we have not asked the business to remove the advert because of the presence of a Union Jack. This is not a culture war and it would be disingenuous to state otherwise as certain media outlets have suggested. “Rather, we have taken action against an advert placed in a conservation area without planning permission. It is therefore a straightforward planning enforcement issue. Sometimes in local government, things are really boring - just not in this case.”

Great video as ever Gary. Never been to the Golden Chippy weirdly. Will have to try it out. I do recommend ‘Something Fishy’ in Lewisham High St as another superb traditional chippy. Always found their fish and chips consistently better than whenever I go to the coast! Cheers
Watching this later in the day than normal, I am now craving fish and chips! That looked really good. It is a long time since I had rock - and it was a fish we'd have at home when I was a kid. I remember the fun and games involved in preparing it; getting the skin off was a skill we never truly mastered and for us it involved a door post, a stout nail and several pairs of pliers! A bit like digging up the Great Big Giant Turnip in the kids book, where everyone including the dog, had to pull! You made me smile on what has been a very draining day, with a funeral to attend. Thanks Gary and camera-son. Maybe we WILL go out and find some semi-decent take away - it involves a 20 minute ride at least, but the sun is shining and it's light for another 3 hours . . .
Love when you are so happy with the food it makes you a bit giddy. It all looked very tasty and I love scampi! For London the price wasn’t too bad either. Thanks Gary, happy chomps to you! 😊
The breadcrumbs on the scampi where way over, the fish portion too small, the chip portion minimal. Worst of all £7 for a main chips (on the menu.) It's one of the things I really miss about living up north (left 30 years ago,) the southern half of the country has no idea what fish and chips really is and don't get me started on most places mushy peas.
I think most of us can agree, that prices up North are considerably cheaper than the Capital of GB. This applies in all areas, - food, house prices, rental prices and rates etc. You find all capital cities across the world charge extra for such, Personally, taking all the above into account, I found the quality and quantity of the fish, and hand cut chips to be beautiful and suffice for one, Scampi may be viewed as somewhat over done, but taste is what matters and as what Gary has said it was just the way they looked. All in all, the price for the whole meal, including that lovely dessert, was very reasonable taking everything above into account. Have a lovely day.
I am in Woolwich next week, and will go here. What is very good about this video is - for a type 1 diabetic, it is very frustrating with fish and chips as you have to either guess (often wrongly) how many chips youre going to get served to sort out your insulin...or wait til the food arrives and it goes cold while sorting out your insulin. Thanks to you young Gaz - i now know beforehand!!! By the way, I have messaged you several times (and each time youve replied, so no worries) about Inn at the Sticks in Llansteffan...today it was named in the Good Food Guide's UK Top 50! Get down there!

Another great video. Glad you enjoyed it. I love the fish and chip reviews.
Thank you Tiffany 🌹
Excellent quality. The owner actually knows where his fish has come from. I think it's pretty easy to know why the fish and chips is better in the North East. A lot (most?) coastal towns have their own fishing fleets, like Whitby, Grimsby etc. So it's basically coming off the boat to the chippy. Even my little village (Marske) had fishing boats.
And closer to the best fishing grounds of the North Sea. It's likely the fish isn't frozen, just chilled, so it's fresh fresh fresh.
Had my most local fishmonger get annoyed at me when I asked if had fresh cod (after some issue where supply was interrupted) , he said yes, it came in this morning freshly frozen.
I just said 'isn't that an oxymoron?'
Probably about 10 months now since been in that shop, and zero plans to ever again.
@@benwu7980 Frozen anything , even fish, can last for months. But it destroys the cellular membranes. It goes slushy once defrozen.
@@benwu7980 I totally agree, I eat frozen stuff all the time. But fresh has to be fresh.

What a brilliant review of a great chippy. I’d ask you to stop (proper fish and chips are few and far between here in the States), but please don’t. Love seeing the amazing food you discover.
Thank you very much!!
Great to see you again too Gary as always. My personal recommendation is a Yemeni style restaurant in York called Yemen Heaven, it's a small cozy restaurant but honestly, the food is the most incredibly seasoned and flavoursome stuff ever.
Beautiful chicken and lamb dishes and amazing warming stews, homemade flatbreads.

Gary, I love your chish & fips reviews. I was inspired yesterday, and ordered from the Codmother in San Francisco. As an English person I that I thought would be a little bit of home. Euuuk. Sadly, it was a highly expensive food that I threw away. I cannot travel home, and am sad that I cannot enjoy my home foods of fish&chips, roast dinner, anything Indian, and the ironic thing is I live in San Francisco, we’re all ex pats from somewhere else. Sadly I cannot get good chish & fips into San Francisco
I am really, really sorry to hear that, Karen, it’s sad when you really look forward to something and it lets you down, I really hope you have a wonderful weekend to make up for it
"Rock Salmon" or Dogfish (common/spur) is the smallest of the shark family, and like all shark is a superb fish to eat; but these days you rarely see rock on menues, one normally sees huss, being passed off as rock, but it is a totally different fish, still very nice to eat (another small shark), but a slightly different taste.
Love the videos.
Tony & Linda, Portsmouth, UK
In my younger days, rock was called “Scarborough woof”!
@@srf-f4e 😀
Thank you very much for the information Tony and Linda
So, is that similar to the "Flake" I had in Melbourne years ago? They said it was a variety of shark and was the nearest thing they had to white fish eaten in Britain
Rock salmon aka lesser spotted dogfish is related to Bull Huss aka greater spotted dogfish. Spurdog is another species of small shark related to the dogfish, with a nasty venomous spike. You might also see Smoothhound (great angling fish) on the menu as Rock.
Gary your reviews are to point i really enjoy watching your videos keep up the awesome work

I know this chippy! That mural at 0:49 made news as the local council deemed it “offensive”. Common sense must have prevailed as it’s still there…
Tory and Labour leaders criticise ‘tedious culture war’ over Golden Chippy mural
The mural was covered by national and regional news outlets. Credit: The Greenwich Wire
Greenwich’s Labour and Conservative leaders have united to criticise the “tedious and disingenuous culture war” spread in the media over a chip shop’s Union Jack mural.
Anthony Okereke and Matt Hartley set aside election campaigning at last week’s council meeting following repeated stories wrongly claiming that the owner of the Golden Chippy on Greenwich High Road had been ordered to remove a mural because it featured a Union Jack.
The chip shop is in the tightly-policed Ashburnham Triangle conservation area where any changes to buildings - including murals - have to be approved by the council
BBC London, the Daily Telegraph, the Daily Mail, GB News and the News Shopper all ran stories about the mural in the last two weeks of March.
Hartley conceded that the shop sold “cracking fish and chips” Credit: The Greenwich Wire
“The council’s request for the mural to be removed is a simple and straightforward and really quite boring planning enforcement issue relating to the conservation area. The fact the Union Jack happens to appear on this mural has absolutely nothing to do with the council’s request for it to be removed.”
“Our residents rightly expect that everyone should play by the same rules when it comes to the planning system. So would the leader agree with me that this issue is actually a simple question of that good old fashioned British sense of fair play.”
Okereke, the Labour leader of the council, responded: “This council is extremely proud of our country.
That was also proved to be nonsense. It was nothing to do with being offensive, it was an unlicensed and unauthorised advert.
@@cjlhessing I posted a article about that point but seems to have been removed
Common sense did prevail thankfully
Unlicensed advert? More likely the council wasn't happy with the fish waving the Union flag! 🇬🇧

Well fish and chips is a pretty rubbish meal. I can enjoy it once or twice a year.
While I’m not a fish ‘n’ chips expert, the presence of a salad on the plate kind of defeats the purpose of the meal. 😊
Not liking mushy peas or any peas for that matter, and liking something green on my plate, that would suit me but we are all different.
I like the idea. I’m not the biggest fan of fish and chips because it’s so heavy and I feel like rubbish after. Salad would help.
No problem, I thought it was a nice addition for a change

Watching this later in the day than normal, I am now craving fish and chips! That looked really good. It is a long time since I had rock - and it was a fish we'd have at home when I was a kid. I remember the fun and games involved in preparing it; getting the skin off was a skill we never truly mastered and for us it involved a door post, a stout nail and several pairs of pliers! A bit like digging up the Great Big Giant Turnip in the kids book, where everyone including the dog, had to pull! You made me smile on what has been a very draining day, with a funeral to attend. Thanks Gary and camera-son. Maybe we WILL go out and find some semi-decent take away - it involves a 20 minute ride at least, but the sun is shining and it's light for another 3 hours . . .
I hope you had a wonderful meal, Liz, I also hope you have a fantastic weekend xx

I think it's just the way it looked, I can confirm they were not burnt apart from the little one. I doubt they would send them out if they were
Spot on - I couldn’t agree more!
I hope you really enjoyed and I will be taking a look. It’s just finding the time.
