It's amazing how, as a child, this film exudes pure magic and enjoyment. And as you grow older the film has such a melancholic feel to it. A part of that is probably down to the fact that many of the cast members have now passed away, and that it was made in a golden age long gone.
But thankfully some of the cast (and production) are still alive and kicking, which is wonderful. Such a very special film. Thank you to all involved. In particular, Mr Walt Disney.

I know, like 3 DECADES! Travers was a nasty old bitch, how did she come up with such a delightful and inspiring character? Perhaps at some point she should've learned to heed her own character's advice about approaching life with all its joys and wonder instead of burying your head in the sand! Might've made her considerably less grumpy? Gotta give Wal credit for perseverance with her!

  • @randyw.9916

The author of the book this was based on P.L.Travers was an adviser in the production, but she disapproved of the Poppins character in its Disney version, with harsher aspects diluted; she felt ambivalent about the music; and she so hated the use of animation that she ruled out any further adaptations of the series. She received no invitation to the film's star-studded première until she "embarrassed a Disney executive into extending one". At the after-party, she said loudly "The first thing that has to go is the animation sequence'." Disney replied, "Pamela, the ship has sailed", and walked away.

Lansbury might've been a fun middle-aged version but the songs weren't right for her voice at all. I LOVED Julie's jab at Jack Warner when she accepted her Oscar for this, Thanking HIM for the award! When Walt Disney passed away in late 1966,Disney Productions lost a truly creative head. For the next five years Walt's brother Roy ran the company and lived to see the opening of Florida's Walt Disney World.Family members are still among the heads of the company, but it hasn't been the same. These days,it's DEFINITELY not the same!

No, it's not! No more hand-painted animation cels created by tracking real peoples' movements, which was why they looked so natural (Example: they used Broadway legend Carol Haney to track as Snow White). Now it's all computer-animated and gimmicky, though I do have to say their stunning and superbly faithful "A Chrismas Carol" with Jim Carrey was breathtaking and a job very well done!

Ms. Andrews will celebrate her 78th birthday in thirty four days on October 1st...

I remember seeing this movie in 1964 and The Sound of Music in 1965. I was just a kid, of course. The characters Julie Andrews played in both films were similar, but I liked The Sound of Music much more. Mary Poppins bothered me a little. The "Feed the Birds" lady creeped me out, and the Dick Van Dyke character never clicked with me. But what I found most odd about this film was how the mother NEVER ONCE spoke to Mary Poppins - like she was no more than a piece of furniture.

  • @shimizukebin

Travers was just a traumtised child, because of her father was an alcoholist. Instead of overcoming this trauma, she created the story of Mary Poppins. Because of this trauma, it was hard to work with her. She was the only one who should understand the story, because she created the story. Disney on the other hand, wanted to make the story the way he always made movies; the magical Disney way.

I suspect that scene where Walt "psychoanalyses" her about her father was fabricated. I can't see a person like P.L. tolerating such an invasive conversation without cutting it off at the quick! She would've considered Walt WAY out of line and presumptuous to have such a dialogue, IMHO.

I love this classic movie, as do millions of others, and a great documentary, however, it's so sad that the young boy Matthew Garber passed away at such a young age, it would have been amazing if he was a part of this tribute to the classic film. I'm still not sure how I feel about Mr Van Dyke's cockney accent as i haven't seen the movie In ages, but I suppose it's passable, as it probably doesn't pay to "over stress" about these things. I remember thinking how Michael Crawford (alias Frank Spencer) would have been an ideal choice for the part of Bert, but as he wasn't a big star at the time, it's unlikely that Walt Disney would take a gamble and cast him in one of his movies. Still, all in all, it's a classic, feel good movie with outstanding songs and great animation, Walt Disney's crowning glory.

@@chrisnorton4382 Thankyou Chris, I had a feeling he was probably too young at the time, in the first series of SMDAE he is very young and I think that was in the mid/late 70's. I suppose it's not all that bad as Dick Van Dyke's dancing skills (despite the fact he wasn't a professional dancer) more than made up for it. I believe in the upcoming sequel, it's another American in the role of Bert, and from what I've seen, he's nailed the accent down. Although how much people remember and love this version, remains to be seen. Thanks again Chris.

I don't blame PL Travers(/Goff) for not wanting to let go of her characters and being afraid of the transition from page to live action big screen. That can be difficult for an Author seeing their characters come to life through the work of others.
It was after all really about her Father(forgiving him, his life story is tragic) and her Sydney aunt(the inspiration for Mary herself) and they were personal stories to her.
As a Fellow Australian (I'm from Melbourne) I'm very proud of her work, one of our greatest Authors.
She even took her father's name as her own pen name as a memorial.... Very sad.

Of course he was also a union-buster and an anti-Semite and a homophobe (personally seeing to it that Tommy Kirk's career was destroyed upon discovering Kirk was gay), but who cares? No wonder Gabler loved him so. God bless them both, they deserve each other!

The Author PL Travers never married but adopted a young boy from Ireland when she was 40. She seperated him from his twin Brother, refusing to take both, but they were successfuly reunited after the old women's death.

The film was great indeed, but Mrs Travers had a valid point about the animation. I believe that it was a distraction and superflous, and in fact Walt Disney had tricked her, as she did not want animation at all. This clip is most interesting.

I just saw "Saving Mr. Banks" as well. I'm sorry to say this about the creator of the characters, but it looks like P.L. Travers got off lightly, and the Disney crew didn't get enough credit.
"So she would be spinning in her grave to learn that her sour and self-absorbed life and extraordinary feud with Walt Disney are to be dramatised in a new film starring Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson to mark the 50th anniversary of the Disney classic.
For while her flying heroine epitomised the magic of childhood, Travers was neither warm nor kindly. She was an intellectual snob who wrote erotic prose, was a one-time fascist sympathiser, occasional lesbian and appalling mother."

I just saw the movie and I have to say wow. I am flabbergasted at how amazing the movie was. It made me cry at least a couple of times. Especially the end if you saw it you know what I mean. Probably my favorite movie of the year. If this doesn't get awards this season then shame on Academy and I will stop supporting it.

Most modern "phobe" words are disingenuous, essentially saying: "I disagree with what you say about the behavior of a particular group, so I will attempt to evade any valid criticism you have and just accuse you of being afraid of them."

I saw the stage musical in London and later in Cardiff and it was SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS!!! The cast was amazing and the director/producer, Cameron Mackintosh, did Mary Poppins credit. The real Mary Poppins, that is. Not the Disney version... I urge you to get the books and read them. They are awesome! Love, Jay xx

P.L. Travers was a horrible, confused, and abrasive woman, more than likely a lesbian. She changed her name, taking her Australian alcoholic father's first name for her last. He died prematurely at 43 and worked, as did Travers' character Mr. Banks, in a bank. Her treatment of her adopted son Camillus was abhorrent, never ever telling him that he was adopted and shipped him off to boarding school as soon as he was old enough. Camillus only found out when his twin brother showed up at their house when they were 17 "Yes, Mummie dearest..."

More than likely a lesbian, right? But, before say this homophobic speech, did you ever met a lesbian girl? P. L Travers was P. L Travers, that's it. And she was a beautiful woman. She was a woman. She wrote beautiful books, and she didn't want to destroy her story with the Disney movie, and it's normal. Totally normal.
Something's not normal.. What you said about lesbian girls... You are disgusting 🤢
