"I won't leave you here, I've got to save you..."
"You already have, Luke."
Seymour Cake That part always gets me, it's such a happy moment but you can't help but tear up.
Seymour Cake Tell your sister, you were right... and that smile on his wounded face always gets me
That line hits me like a ton of bricks every time
+Seymour Cake im your 150th like!
What gets me about this scene is Darth Vader is just an old man after everything making it seem like he is a God this immortal machine turns out to just be an old man with a lot of sadness regret
At first we all thought Vader was pretty much a souless man, but when you take off his mask he is just a sad old man realizing the errors of his actions, thats what makes Vader an awesome character
Probably the scariest part. A broken old man who has spent most of his adult life trapped in armor he cannot remove is all that is left of Anakin Skywalker, finally realizing that he went wrong too late.
You know what's crazy is that he technically wasn't an old man. Anakin was 42 years old when he died
Ramz
Based on? (That's a serious question, by the way).
+DIESEL0759 well he was nine years old when qui gon met him. One episode 2 that's ten years later which indicates he was 19 during the attack of the clones and revenge of the sith is 3 years after episode 2 so he was 22 years old when he became Darth Vader. So the return of the Jedi and new hope is 20 years later. So adding it up is 42 years of age.
Ramz
Fair enough. Being in body armor for the majority of your adult life ages a person.
"I'll not leave you here, I've got to save you!"
"You already have, Luke."
*Anakin Skywalker, bringing the feels*
Aidan Keogh brought me into tears. 😭
For some reason, Even more so now that Carrie is gone...
So true... ;,-(
Aidan Keogh That line is a bit ironic because Ahsoka's last words to Vader were: "I won't leave you! Not this time." Which is extremely similar.
always gets me
He deliberately closed his eyes so that Luke's face would be the last thing he saw.
:_(
Yeah I know where your at :_(
+luislopez224 thanks, that's what I meant
I'm okay. . .
You made me fuckin sadder now
"You either die a villain, or you live long enough to see yourself become a hero"
You either die a hero, or you live long enough to become a mobile spawn point
Michael Smith it Made Sense here. This is called a joke
These replies are a clusterfuck
@@MichaelSmith-te7eq r/whoosh
Anakin lived long enough to see himself become a villian, and died a hero...
"You were right about me."
Perhaps the most rewarding last words from someone so cruel.
He received cruelty himself from the Jedi council.
Hey let’s be nice, guys
i don't care either way.
They weren’t from someone cruel though. They were the last words from a hero who had restored balance to the force. Somebody cruel was thrown into the Death Star along with Darth Sidious
Not his fault that Sidious manipulated him and controlled him
This is not the death of Darth Vader. Vader died along with Sidious, and for those brief few moments with his son, he was Anakin Skywalker again.
obi wan way of speaking
***** yoda: hey anakin
Anakin: hi guys im back
Yoda: wtf , hayden u r
Anakin:...
Yoda :stay out of my force with ur sand
Anakin: i dont like sand
Yoda: sadap
This is actually true vader died as soon as he made the decision to pickup sidious
+John Smith These words made me cry. I don't know my father and hope for resolution one day.
New York Yankees Giants im sure george would like 2 add moar jar jar jars into this scene
:3
The Force is strong...but not as strong as a father's love for his son.
You make my eyes sweat Cuz of that comment
It's just liquid pride!
nothing brings back a person like family you never knew you had
I just get a horrible case of the widespread medical condition "FANDOM FEELS" whenever I read comments like these. Symptoms include screaming, crying a lot for unknown reasons, long hours on the net and fandom obsession. NO POSSIBLE TREATMENT OR CURE AVALIABLE.
Say that's to solo
6 movies of SW are about Anakin, his life and redemption. People hate prequels, but I like them.
Its tragedy of Vader, he dies and becomes force ghost. Forever without Padme
I just didn't like that the prequels were mostly all about getting Anakin in the suit. Something we already knew was coming. It just made the whole thing much more predictable. I don't think the prequels were terrible, I just think that the story could have developed in a slightly more interesting way beyond just the story of Anakin, especially since we never really got to see the full development of him as a character. It was never really shown what made him into who he was other than his relationship with Padme and some of his training with Obi-Wan. Because of the massive time skip between the movies, there's just huge chunks of his life that we never got to see in the movies. I think they could have done a better job at showing the audience more of that special connection that Anakin had with Obi-Wan, about exactly how The Emperor was manipulating the Senate and clouding the minds of the Jedi etc.
That's why I think the sequels are useless, since they were all about anakin and stuff
+Jutan That doesn't make any sense? The prequels and the tv show are there to show you how anakin became darth vader, why he became darth vader and how tricked he was. And to show the struggles that led to him being corrupt by sidious and the dark side.
People don't hate the prequels for focusing on Anakin, they hate it because lots of the plot to get there was dumb and convoluted. Horrible dialogue didn't help either
+ArvelDreth that's where the TV show Star Wars the clone wars fills you in with the relationships beyond Anakin Skywalker
I remember the very first time I saw this movie when Vader said to take his helmet off I was like, "No way they're actually going to show his face, they'll probably just show it from the back or something." And then they show it and the audience is supposed to be appalled by his appearance, but then it hits you right in the feels when he tells Luke he was right and all you want is for Vader to stay alive so he and Luke can kick ass together. One of my favorite movie moments ever.
That is the only thing I would change about Star Wars ( Besides getting part of the EU back to Canon .) .Anakin did not had a chance for redemption .It was too short .He needed something bigger to redeem himself .I know he saved his son and kind of destroyed the First Empire but it was not enough .He died before he could be remembered by everyone as a hero .Vader will be his name forever .
+Esteban Bottini Truthfully, does that really matter? Vader died along with the Emperor, shouldn't that be what counts? Does the entire galaxy need to adhere to the martyr that had ruled with an iron fist for so long? In death, those that truly mattered knew the truth. That's what really counts, in my opinion.
They should do an AU about Anakin surviving and helping Luke to bring the Jedi Order back or just making his own group because he feels that it is wrong , seeing that he helped to destroy the old Jedi Order .Also , he should ask Galen to forgive him .
+Esteban Bottini i think that the point was to NOT let Anakin have a chance at redemption. It's a classic tragic hero's tale.
Mostly , we learned that behind Vader there was a suffering man .
I broke down when Luke took off the helmet and no words were spoken just father and son smiling at each other. Wish there more moments like that throughout.
Never thought rhat before seeing this comment, ya, that would been cool if they 2 could kick some ass together xd
+Miro Kontio it'd be weird seeing a man in all black being nice specially with all he did lol. but yes it would be amazing
This scene gets to me too, especially when Luke says I won't leave you.
***** lmfaoo, the return of the stares
+DarthPapi071 thats not how Kylo and Han had it. Sorry for the spoiler.
Stormtrooper 1: uh hey isn't that Lord Vader
Stormtrooper 2: lol
Stormtrooper 4: Nigga he right Vader and the emperor be dead now aint no one stopping us lets get da fuck outta here
MrHallOfPain
How do you know he is black ?? :D
Stormtrooper 3 must be Finn's father.
TheKrowsNice racist!
The smile that ANAKIN gives right before he dies to Luke that says "I'm so, so proud of you" that gets me every time. I love these movies.
Anakin dies a good man knowing that his son redeemed him and that his daughter also lives :) Anakin dies a proud father such an emotional death scene and now he can rest in peace and be with Padme and his mother :) Love Star Wars
I remember seeing this as a little kid and saying " Oh, he's just a sad old man"
Yeah Star Wars is for everyone
Plus side of sacrificing yourself to save your son... not having to meet your grandson.
Or granddaughter
+Jiratena rey
Rey is a woman though
+coopermax1 Kylo Ren is his Grandson through Leia.

I like how no one cared about Vader except Luke

Deep isn't it? He ruled through fear and everyone in the Death Star respected and obeyed him based on that fear - but they didn't look twice when he was in his dying moments. Only the son who had always fought him cared in the end.
Don't forget Leia and padmé
Two sad things i never noticed 'til now:
•vader smiles upon seeing luke with his "real" eyes.
•A tear runs down luke face as anakin dies. (disappears in next shot)
#RightInTheFeels
Whoa, I never noticed the smile.
I noticed the smile but did you know that he purposely closes his eyes when he is leaning back away from Luke so Luke would be the last thing he sees? (I found out by another comment)
Love your username!
+Mandalorian Marauder Thanks, i thought Finn's line was funny in TFA.
"I'll not leave you here, I'll save you."
"You already have, Luke..."
Very touching and meaningful quote! 👏

That.
That right there is my favourite part of any Star Wars soundtrack.
The original theme is awesome. The Force theme is awesome. The Imperial March is awesome. Both ROTJ endings, Duel of the Fates, the entire Revenge of the Sith soundtrack... the list goes on, and they're all amazing.
But this...
It's not much, but that short, subdued, melancholic rendition of the Imperial March right there, as Vader dies, has always got to me in a way no other piece in this saga has.
Indeed. Let's hope together that disney doesnt fuck up the whole star wars franchise even more.. And release atleast few more episodes of TCW. The moment when ashoka left the order was exactly like this.. I love SW.
Agree
That's actually my ringtone
the emperors throne room is my favorite emperial song. it just sounds so evil. it also made the emperors rath feel inescapable like it's a curse.
@@marty644 and then they fucked up the whole franchise :(
0:58 I like when Luke took Vaders helmet off. And the dimming tone of the Imperial March slowly droning off to silence.
This is awing to me when I first saw this as I realized that the dimming of the Imperial March symbolizes the Death of the Empire and Darth Vader, and the rebirth of Jedi Knight, Anakin Skywalker and the purpose to restore the Republic.
+Feldmarschall Erwin Rommel Stop hurting my feels pls!
+Feldmarschall Erwin Rommel and now snoke fucked that all up
+Feldmarschall Erwin Rommel I second that, the moment of Vader's passing with the Vader being faintly, touchingly (if that's a word) with sorrow played on the harp was just genius; the villian dies and we're heartbroken.
+Feldmarschall Erwin Rommel Even more chilling, is the trailing of of the imperial march when Anakin dies
+Hayes Maki So true, Fuck you Snoke
Obi Wan: "You were suppose to destroy the Sith not join them, bring balance to the force not leave it in darkness."
Anakin as Vader: "Why not do both :D"
Obi Wan : Facepalm
I love this comment
+mark medina im yur 25th like! hahahahahahahaha!
+mark medina Honestly if I had a choice i would go grey... Jedi and Sith are soooo screwed up in their own ways... :/
+Michael Brown Yeah
+Michael Brown And what do we call this new sect?
"You already have... Luke.." damnit... every fucking time..
A little late here but yeah. Every..single..time.
@@imalizard2113 Never too late dear brother.
Interesting
The death of one of the most well written villains of all time.
He didn't die a villain though.
He died as the true Chosen One, as a Jedi, as the one he was destined to be.
And now they stuffed Luke skywalker. Absolute bullshit.
he is and will always the best villian of all time
This trilogy is the modern Era equivalent of a Shakespeare play.
BeginToThink you got it
Afinio lord of games Tragic hero
BeginToThink Even has incest like one!
Totally agree.
and the sequel trilogy is the equivalent of Twlight
Single greatest moment of all the SW Movies. Period.
The entire moment of Luke with Vader and the emperor through this scene is the strongest and most emotional moment in all of the Star Wars saga possibly one of the greatest scenes in cinematic history
would have been perfect had they delete the ewoks.
still the best though.
ROTJ has it's flaws, the pacing is a bit off and the Ewoks are an pretty annoying, but this whole ending with Luke, Vader and Palpatine gives me need chills every single time. So many parts of it.
indeed. Before SW had a J in the middle.
Icespoon that or the two moons on Tatooine
"Just for once... let me look on you... with my own eyes..."
Al Pacino- No... nO
Now, go, my son. Leave me!
"Just for once, let me look on you with my own eyes." UGH. That's when the tears start. One of the most emotion-evoking parts of any movie, for me at least.
+Stokedhavok Same for me!
siaysi
Cool! It's a great scene isn't it?
Sebastian Shaw (actor)
In 1982, Shaw was chosen for the small but crucial role of redeemed Anakin Skywalker in Return of the Jedi, the third and final film in the original Star Warstrilogy. Although David Prowse played the costumed scenes and James Earl Jonesvoiced Darth Vader, just as they had in the first two films, Shaw was cast in a single scene with Mark Hamill, during the moment aboard Death Star II when Luke Skywalker unmasks his dying father. Since the scene was unquestionably the emotional climax of the film, the casting crew sought an experienced actor for the role. You can see this in Wikipedia.
David Prowse really got screwed over so much. No wonder he started fooling around on set and not taking things seriously anymore. I don't understand why no one ever seem to recognize how his body language was just as important to the character as JEJ's voice.
Prowse has done OK by wearing that costume in three films
From slave, 2 being told what to do as a Jedi, then being told what 2 do as a Sith by the Emperor......Anakin is finally "free"
Make me tear up, good job lol
The slave Who bring freedom to The Galaxy! All his way were part of The Master plan. Sacrifice his life, wife, Kids, body and friends, Just for reach to Dark Sidious and destroy him :'( . The true hero of this Story :)
Poor Anakin, the only person he actually betrayed and never listen to is Padmé!
+Refractivepower He did that though because he wanted to protect her and everyone else. (Not counting the people at the Jedi Temple)
he's a really complex character
i don't care what anybody says, this scene is 100 times more powerful because of the prequels and even because of season finale of rebels. ahsoka couldn't turn him back...obi-wan couldn't turn him back...but luke did. luke redeemed anakin skywalker....a much more powerful scene now.
I couldn't agree more. The prequels, Clone Wars, and Rebels have so much to add to the story.
+The Killjoys Finally someone in a comment section who doesn't hate every aspect of the prequels with every fiber of their being.
And so heartbreaking at the same time...
It bothers me when someone compares the Original and Prequel Trilogies. Yes, they are part of the same saga but they are a different set of movies. Its apples and oranges. Just like people can't compare them to the new movies "Force Awakens", "Last Jedi" and eventually IX. Star wars is a generational story takes place in different time periods of one epic story. As bad as some people think the Prequels were, they still did better in the box office than some movies now.
I agree. The prequels make this so much more emotional
Probably the most precious moment in cinema history. So well done and so perfectly executed.
and the prequels kinda ruined it.
+James Machuga Revenge of the Sith was brilliant.
but anakin wasn't the tragic hero in 2 and 3 amongst other issues with the prequels i did like parts but the original trilogy is better
james plz u don't know what ur talking abt if u add the clone wars to ep 3 he is a tragic hero
The most emotional scene of Star Wars
Agreed. It's heart wrenching.
I always thought the most emo scene was when anikins mom died in episode 2
Its even worse when you hear that small faint Imperial March tune dying out, just like Vader is slowly dying out...
Mugthraka That bit is what gets me as well. I didn't notice it for a long while, but when I did, it tied the whole series together. The story was never really about Luke, Han, etc. The whole of the trilogy was about the redemption of Darth Vader.
Mugthraka That makes his death undeniable. It is for real, however sad that is.
One of the best lines in movie history. "I have to save you". "you already have". Awesome
I like how Anikin is American in the first 3 movies, and here he sounds English. I guess hanging around all those high class imperial officers rubbed off on him haha
True haha and the ironic thing is that the clones sounded Aussie/Kiwi in the prequels but then their english voices became Americanish
+Daffy Duke the storm troopers are not clones like the in the prequels, they're just normal humans but in the clone wars Tv series they sound kiwi still but a bit more americanized haha
Trueee lmao but i never knew the clones were dropped and replaced with normal humans
+Daffy Duke well you learn something new about 4 times a week as the old saying goes.
actually I think Hayden Christianson is Canadian
i think in the end, Vader may have been the greatest Jedi of them all. He went through darkness no Jedi ever could fathom, and still, albeit with some help, came back to the light side.
You sure don't know anything about expanded universe
Revan would like a word with you.
DemoDemoPAN DemoDemoPAN I actually do know a bit about the EU, mostly via Wookepedia. I still stick with my statement.
James T Thank you.... someone caught on to that. Vadar did it by CHOICE! When you join the dark side... the only way out is death.
Revan still could've gone back even after the mindswipe, after he found out who he truly was.
Immense props to the three men who brought Vader to life.
James Earl Jones is the most famous, with his deep menacing voice and David Prowse's imposing 6'6 figure bringing the greatest villain ever to the big screen.
But my biggest props go to Sebastian Shaw, who managed to portray a broken sad old man finally given a reason to smile for the first time in decades so perfectly, in a scene that still brings a tear to my eye eyerytime I see it. Mr. Shaw, you were a legend and are missed, now and always.
"You where right. You where right about me."
You can HEAR the relief in his voice. The relief that for the first time in his life he is finally free, the relief that his son was strong enough to save him, the relief that he was able to fulfil a nearly impossible prophecy.
Anakin Skywalker is truly the best character in this saga of films. He IS The Skywalker Saga.
Disney Star Wars is NOT canon...
The greatest aspect of this scene is the symbolism: the son finally understands what it is to be a man when he unmasks the terrifying image of his father and sees the human being underneath.
And that's why those original movies are so amazing: you've got the journey of the son and the father running underneath this whole good versus evil space opera epic. Gee whiz.
I always choke up when Vader says "You already have" when talking about saving him. Gets me every time.
Yeah, Anakin/Vader has a habit of choking people up...
Christian Umbria Smith Clever
Christian Umbria Smith Oh..Haha I get it! lol XD
Same here. I was about to post the same thing until I saw your post. So sad.. but so cool. It's a shame that Anakin died, tbh. He would've been great later on, although I see how he wouldn't have fit in at all.
Girls cry on titanic, we guys cry when a cyborg mass murderer dies:'(
Girls cry through this as well, well maybe only us the geeks/Tomboys T-T
I Didn't cry watching Titanc this was much more sad ;(
Im a girl and i cried over this oh so many times. Who the fuck cries over a shitty love story like titanic lmao
+Joshua Blackwood
Actually, Vader _was_ a cyborg. Aside from the replacement prosthetic limbs after Count Dooku and Obi-Wan had severed them, he had several components to help him breath after his lungs were seared from being burned, a control panel hardwired into the “iron lung” to adjust his body temperature, breathing, even the glucose in his blood stream. So there you have it.
@Joshua Blackwood It doesn't matter. As I have described it, Vader was a cyborg from his reconstruction on Mustafar to his death on the second Death Star. When he became one with the Force, he no longer needed any physical flesh at all-his strength in the Force, and his realignment to the Light Side allowed him to resume the form he had as Anakin Skywalker.
So even though he suffered as a cyborg for 23 years, he finally returned to the form he was meant to be in life, if it's any consolation to you.
Cried over both tbh
In other stories, Vader considered the very armor and suit that kept him alive a prison. That is completely true. That suit was a prison and Luke finally released him from it. In the end, Anakin didn't care if he'd make it off that station alive or not. All he cared about was truly seeing his son, the family he wanted more than anything but had ripped from him by a monster, the being who was half of him and the woman he loved more than anything. He was able to see him with his real eyes for the first and last time and he died with a smile on his face knowing he saved his son and the unconditional love that Luke had for him despite all the many terrible things he did.
His thoughts on the suit was "wtf is stabbing me... fuck, ow, wtf man? Palpatine you stupid fucker, why did you put these sharpy sharo sharp on this suit, AAAAAAAAARRGHHH AAAAAA!! NOOOOOOOOOOOO! I HATE THIS FUCKING SUIT!!"
Plus Palpatine stole any chance Anakin had for happiness. Tossing him down that shaft should have been the first thing he did with him.
"luke, help me put this peroxide blonde on"
"but you'll dye..."
XD
+Carefree Jimbob WTF
Heh heh heh heh. That's pretty original.
Lol I hope someone makes a UA-cam poop off of that
Anakin :( They never got to be a real family. I will never forget that. I will never forget that they never got their happy ending. I will never forget that Anakin never held his twins. I will never forget that Leia and Anakin never met. I will never forget that Padme never got a chance to be a mother to her children or Anakin never got to be a real father :( It's all so sad and tragic
True. And he came as a Jedi ghost to see Luke. But still, it's so tragic what happened.
Someday they all will be together.
And that's where fanfic come in. I've read several AUs on Anakin not falling. My favorites usually involve Luke going back to the past. Ironically, I'm reading one right now....
very true and sad. But not even Obi Wan could save him from that. And obi wan was such a moral stable, peaceful and understanding jedi master who always knew what was good and not.
Depressed Comedian that is so true!! 😂😂
Such a tragic way for a villain to die that used to be a hero the chosen one!!!
The villain died with the emperor, this is the death of Anakin
TRUE THAT!!!
which is why he asked Luke to take the mask off. it was the last remnant of Darth Vader.
:)
true that!!
As Obi wan said - he was the chosen one. to bring balance to the force. he was right all along.
yes
Well he kind of fucked up the balance to begin with
+NJA2k8 He did bring balance though, cutting down the size of the Jedi brought it proportional to the Rule of Two that the Sith follow.
+4mped I feel like even one sith outweighs many more jedi in the grand scheme of things.
+Dilan Malawana Qui Gon originally said that, just saying.
The title for this is much more powerful and deep than what people realize ,Return of the Jedi, it means Vader's redemption the return of the light the return of the good in Vader the return of Anakin Skywalker
AUGS FOR PRESIDENT it also symbolizes the return of the order and the republic
I never thought about ROTJ referring to Vader 😮 WOW!
Always thought of that being Luke.
This is a whole new dramatic end of the Skywalker saga.
Thanks
This is why I shake my head at people who say Kylo Ren was cool before he took his mask off. This is something else Vader and his grandson have in common, under his mask Kylo is a conflicted young man. Under his, Vader was a broken old man
kylo is so lame
Anakin- "I WILL EVEN LEARN TO STOP PEOPLE FROM DYING"
Luke - "But you'll die!"
Redeemed Anakin/ Vader "Nothing can stop that now."
That is some character growth
He saved Luke from dying
Hayden did not age well
Thank's to the prequels, he's actually 46 in this scene.
Sam Brown 46? how? He must be in his 50s atleast
The Legendary No in ep3 he was 23, and ep6 is 23y after ep3
Wade Fucking Wilson 46 wow
The Legendary yuuuup
Never really saw how powerful this scene was as a kid.but as an adult,it tugged on the heart strings.
-I've got to save you
+You already have luke
Feels...
When I was just a youngling, I honestly thought Vader was a robot overall and nothing else. This really made me release them waterworks realising he was human under that cage of a mask
DarkKing432 Vader also in a way saw himself as nothing more than a mechanical monster for many years, and in this scene finally feels human again.
Upon Palpatine telling him that he was the one behind Padme's death, he was so filled with agony that he attempted many things to get rid of this guilt - Erasing it from memories, and even attempted suicide once )both are non-canon incidents now) , but t never worked. In the RotS novel, it's mentioned that he became the one thing he wanted to destroy forever.
Man, that ship is so OTP I'll actually cry with feels overload. :,-(
When electrocuting Luke, Sidious had forgotten how he had turned Anakin to the dark side in the first place: The power to save his loved ones. Anakin would not watch Luke die
I think what was going through Vader's mind first was Mace Windu's death in Episode III. I don't think he'd seen the force lighting unleashed by the Emperor since them. That jogged up his memory of his failure to save Padme, how he ended up in the cyborg suit (which was painful for him), and the showdown on Mustafar with Obi-Wan. With these flashbacks, he did not want to experience the feeling of loss with Luke. That's why he turned his back on his master.
I think while that was happening his whole life flashed before his eyes probably remembering losing shmi and padme, through luke nearly dying and begging for help
such a powerful scene.
"I'll not leave you here, I've got to save you."
"You already have, Luke."
The Jedi and The Sith were both wrong. Anakin is the Chosen One. He allowed himself to fall into the dark to be pulled again to the light.
Andree Tungcab Good saying
Andree Tungcab he was the jedi who returned...
He was basically the reset button.
This scene makes me hate The Force Awakens. Anakin brought balance to the force, and the empire was been defeated. Luke and Leia will keep the force in balance after Anakin passes away. But then TFA arrives, and screws it all up.
Kylo is just ignoring the fact that Vader turned to the light again
+hurricanetren1 And not to mention he and the First Order have obviously not learned from anything from history class. "Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it."
Long story short, Kylo has either forgotten or chosen to ignore the past and is essentially doomed to repeat it.
I personally believed that there is no need for a new movie after ep 6, but TFA screwed things up with hundreds of plotholes. Worst Star Wars movie ever!
Anakin did fulfill the prophecy for the time being. There have been many who've brought balance to the force. The force awakens shows that more will need to rise up to do it again. It's a never ending cycle, happened in the old republic, and it will happen again.
Leader237 It happened in the OR?
2:00 Those few notes just get me these days. I have never felt the need to cry watching this scene before. But now, I see little things that I did not before. Such as Luke actually having a tear rolling down his face. That got me.
blazematt10 Me too.
Idk about you guys, but when Luke takes Vader's helmet off and smiles, it really hits me in the feels. I feel like at that point, Luke sees his father; he doesn't see a Sith Lord, a powerful Force wielder, or a Fearsome Figure... he sees a broken man who was stripped from happiness and the few things that made him happy. He sees a broken man who just wanted to save his loved ones, and smiles with compassion. Truly a beautiful scene
While the battle was still going on, I found Anakin's death to be peaceful for the most part. It was very quiet in the hanger, and for Anakin, who had been on so many adventures and fights, he passes away in relative peace. All his life, Anakin was a slave to people, always following orders and rushing through life. And here, for the first time in the end of his life, he can finally relax. For a person who went through so much trauma, this was a blessing for Anakin.
After watching Anakin burning then put into the suit, I came here to watch this. :3
Same lol
Lmao me too.
Woah! Me too!
Me too lol
So did I
Imagine if Luke took Vader's helmet off and he was..

If you think about this, Luke has never seen his own mother. He only saw his dad before he died. Especially for Leia, she will never see her parents ever. It's really said and they both will never now about their parents origins. unless C-3PO tells them.
???
Brick By Brick At the end of Episode 3 Organa erases C3P0's mind for no reason at all.
+Brian Boardwell I think that he only had CP30s memory erased
Kenneth Hildebrand Ya you're right. So I guess R2 can tell Luke and Leia about their parents.
oh yeah
"Nothing can stop that now. Just for once, let me look on you with my own eyes." Anakin in his last moments simply wanted to see his son, and in seeing his son he would undoubtedly see a reflection of a bit of himself, and of bit of Padme. It's deep to think that he died knowing that in the end, their love, won the day.
This was the most emotional scene in Star Wars for me, including the scene at the end, where you can see young Anakin as a Force ghost, standing alongside Obi Wan and Yoda. I teared up at that part.
Gosh... His smiling at the end really killed me :(( This is probably one of the saddest movie deaths I've seen..
Fast forward 30 years and we have the SAME problem. Vader's death is now a pointless sacrifice due to TFA. Thanks Disney.
Your right Yoda but look at it this way, MORE STAR WARS :D
Tfa was good but ruined things from the prequels and originals you can't make a good Star Wars trilogy without Yoda so Disney where's Yoda as a force ghost
+THEMEGACHICK aka therealoboy Yoda is in Rebels and Disney only deals with licensing and merchandise and marketing the series, Lucasfilm still retains creative control
It wasn't pointless, Vader didn't bring balance to the force because he died and the good guys one..there cannot be a balance if one side tries to trump another side. Now with Vader's grandson Kylo (Ben) there is the chance to have that balance since he pulls from both sides of the force but doesn't know where he stands
Yoda, your wisdom didn't fail you.
Did none of the Imperials notice what was going on? I mean, sure they were running for their lives to get off the DS 2 before it would explode (and of course I get why in terms of plot they wouldn't just have some stormtroopers randomly show up), but you'd think someone notice, haha.
"Hey... is that... Lord Vader?"
"Nope nope just keep moving along... man choked my wife"
LMAO
tommytom HAHAHAHAHA !!!!!!
It's to show how evil and uncaring they are. They only cared about Vader when he was powerful.
+tommytom Wood u help the guy who Force chokes u wen u screw up????? Probably not.
unfortunately, it would become a terrible theory to the Star Wars universe because all the evidence would be thrown out of the window when the 2nd Death Star exploded.
"You were right. You were right about me." That line.. Goosebumps.
Such a powerful scene! Throughout his entire life Anakin struggled to protect the ones he loved. Although he lost the two most important women in his life, he died with peace in the arms of his beloved son Luke. It was love that drove Anakin to become Vader and it was that same love that freed Anakin from the Dark Side and fulfilled the prophecy of the Chosen One.
*"There is always hope my friend though it often comes in forms not looked for. The key is knowing how to see it and seizing that opportunity"*
- Qui-Gon Jinn's spirit to Yoda on Dagobah.
This one scene is so infinitely better than anything in the prequels. I remember watching this as a very young boy and being totally blown away by Vader's unmasking. At first I was confused, and couldn't believe that the machine-like, twisted villain who I had grown to fear (and love, because Darth Vader is awesome) over the past three films looked so weathered and beaten beneath his shiny suit. For the whole trilogy, that terrifying sable helmet masked an actual human being, a father, with flaws and internal conflict. I really cared when he died, not only for him but also for Luke and Leia.
I felt nothing at the end of Episode III when Padme died and Anakin was burnt alive.
4 words: 'You were my brother'
*****
I dont know if youre being sarcastic, but the "you were my brother" bit affected me emotionally too. Although the final fight between Obiwan and Anakin was poorly written that part did bother me. Obiwan kept himself true to the order, but deep down in side he DID care and love for Anakin like a brother.
+Joe Hollywood I wasn't being sarcastic. He was saying it was infinitely better than anything in the prequels which is why I mentioned that. Yeah that scene was incredibly emotional and sad. Obi-Wan screaming that he loved him and they were brothers really got me.
I felt something when Anakin got burned but only because of Obi Wan's performance and the John Williams music. Here it was ALL about emotion. Felt nothing when Padame and the Jedi all died in Episode 3.
I agree this is all emotion, but that harp that delicately plays emperors march when vader passes is just....sublime and perfect
This really was the saddest part of the entire original trilogy and hard to believe when you're watching it for the first time and he get used to seeing Vader at the bad guy see that there is good in him he died as Anakin Skywalker Jedi Knight and as any loving father would protecting his son. It is hard to believe that the best part of the movie would lead to the saddest
RIP James Earl Jones. You were the voice.
Dave Filoni: I've got to save you
Star Wars: You already have, Dave
luke has such a good heart, after everything his father did he still believed he could save him, and he did
This scene is already heartbreaking enough on its own, but something I only realized very recently was that, when Anakin smiles at 1:47, it was probably the first time he smiled since he fell to the dark side.
wow what a scene. one of my favorites in the entire saga. luke takes off his mask and finally sees his father for the first time and smiles and puts his hand on his shoulder. just wow
The incredible part about this is that you gotta keep in mind - he is Anakin Skywalker, its so hard for me to imagine this energetic young man being Darth Vader, and the more i think about it the more i feel the epicness
It's very subtle, but when Luke takes Vader's mask off, you see a bit of weariness in Anakin's eyes, like he's afraid of what his son sees. But instead, Luke smiles, as if saying "it's okay father, I'm here", and Vader smiles at his son, who sees him as an actual human being.
Even as a kid I always thought it was strange how Luke carries Darth and everyone just runs around like oh well our Imperial master must be dying but he's in good hands
That's because the Death Star was about to be blown up and they were all racing to save their own asses.
GeorgiaKev That's no excuse ,why stay in formation. Only need a second to shoot Luke and grab Vader. I suppose you can't trust criminals though ;)
Maybe they were scared that Vader would execute them for somehow failing to adequately protect the Death Star.
GeorgiaKev I think you're on to something
Norbit CleaverHook You're wasting your energy, you would have a better luck convincing a Christian that there is something wrong in his bible than to convince a fanatic that the OT wasn't perfect.
This is just so emotional...
Btw why does everyone hate Hayden Christensen. I thought he played a great role and contrasts how he was a young competant man who became shrouded in darkness and become a monster than once again become his young former "light" self
I think he did a great job too
Ozzi Cossy Hayden was a good actor. The problem was the script. Made him look like a whiney bitch.
I don't like sand
+CinosGaming I like that line. I don't get why people hate it. What, they aren't allowed to talk about ordinary things? Growing up as a child he hated the rough sand on Tatooine, and now he's on Naboo where everything is soft. But of course what he's really thinking about is Padmé; he just uses the nature as a metaphor. It's really well written.
SelvesteSand i dont hate it cause of teh movie i hate dat line cause it was kinda creepy ( just like the whole "lovey" segments of episode 2) and also he talked bout luv in front of jar jar so yea
This is a absolute masterpiece, the raw emotion of seeing a supposed soulless man asking to see his son with his own eyes to his final words “ you were right about me” part of the reason I love this series
Take of that mask
What do you think you'll see if I do?
The face of my father
Dude....
+Ron ペルラス thats what snoke wants you to believe
When he's done what he wants he'll crush you, you know it's true
+AUGS FOR PRESIDENT come home. we miss you.
***** hehehe good one.
Anakin made the right choice after all...If obi would save him when he was defeated and burnt, will he turn to the good side? will he? vadar is such a poor man, yet he smiled...I'm happy for him, it's by choice that Luke chose not to fight or kill him, and it's by choice that anakin saves his son...that's what makes this movie epic, it's the choice we make that distinguish us from good and evil...
He was too far gone when obi-wan annihiliated him. He probably saw himself and what he could have been in Luke who resisted the dark side. Almost like an alternate universe in which he stayed a Jedi. All that and the love he had for Padme came back to him in the climax.
I love how their smiles express a thousand words, with no need to speak them aloud, and then Anakin doesn’t hesitate in asking Luke to go save himself. He doesn’t care about his own safety; he just wants Luke to be safe. Beautiful.
Something tells me Vader was actually content to die at this point. He'd finally achieved what he first became a Jedi to do, and on top of all the evils he'd committed since then, he'd been living an artificially prolonged and stunted life. Having repaired his soul by his redemption, he was able to pass on into the Force, knowing he'd now be able to see his wife and his mother again. That smile of a proud father that he gives Luke, and his acknowledgement of Leia as well - he knew they'd go on to be better people.
One of the worst parts about this is that had Anakin survived, he probably would have turned to the light side again with the emperor dead. It would have bee cool to see Luke and Anakin on the same side, with Leia in the background. It would have been awesome to see a family United to fight for justice, but at least Anakin died after realising that Luke was right. And he did come back as a force ghost, so it's not all bad.
Your right but the new republic would always still view Anakin as a threatning monster after all he had done to the galaxy and most likely exile or even execute him. Sad :( he didnt get the recognition he deserves even after death
I think one of the reasons why Anakin told his son to leave him, was because he knew he was a threat and a sith lord. At least Anakin can die knowing that his own son will not remember him as a monster like everyone else. That's my theory at least.
Brandon Jones he would've been tried for his crimes and most likely executed.
Luke saved him in more ways than one.
The whole unmasking bit is meant to show how much of a torture Vader had to live on a daily basis because of his mistakes.
He didn't have to live in such a messed up body anymore, he can now live in the Force without the pain.
Remember the galaxy still views Vader as a terrorist and dictator. A fraction of groups in the outer rim actually don't know that Vader is dead at the time. He would be tried and executed even though he balanced the force.
As someone who watched the prequels before the og trilogy this hits extra hard since I started out this journey in Anakin's beginning. Seeing it end like this is heartbreaking but fulfilling
Same, I grew up in the 2000’s. Got into star wars around 2008 with the release of the Clone Wars.
I think thats why I find it so sad, we seen most of his journey.
Luke-"But you'll Die"
Vader-"Nothing can stop that now"
Luke-"Have you heard the tragedy of Darth Plageuis the Wise?
"I've got to get you out of here. I've got to save you."
"You already have, Luke."
The best.
I just lost my dad to cancer a year ago. I remember renting the vhs of this movie with him in 89. This hits totally different now. The " I won't leave you" line specially, because that's exactly how you feel. You want him to stay with you, by your hand, as he always did. But his is not your journey to walk. He must pass through the last door alone.
This scene would have been so much more awesome with Jar Jar. He's the key to this, you know.
Catzilla Not even the emperor is as evil as you...
Catzilla That comment gave me cancer.
Catzilla i agree. after all, the whole saga is defined by the very brief moments we have with jar jar binks.
Catzilla Jar Jar plot twist: was behind everything..both secretly hidden Seth and Jedi Overloard..tipping the balances of good and evil from time to time
Catzilla Jar Jar is dead
I wish that at the least Vader would of gotten a scene with Leia when he knew she was his daughter. That way he could of made piece with both of his kids before he died.
James Forcum he sort of, had her planet destroyed, soooo... Kind of hard to forgive.
Jon . A He didn't have her planet destroyed it was Tarkin's idea.
yeah man that is right
James Forcum would have* fellow german here
Maybe in episode VIII or IX we will have a scene with Leia and ghost Anakin.
One of the best scenes in movie history
My Dad showed me the OT in 1999 when I was 4 yrs old. Until this day the OT is still my fav. Darth Vader dying and then being burned sticks out in my memory and my Dad often would bring up this scene when i was older as well as the scene that followed and said it always stuck out to me "why does vader dye on purpose?" and "why does Luke burn him?". Fast forward to 2021 my dad dyed in my arms the same way Anakin did in Luke's arms. My dad had stage 4 lung cancer and dyed after we decided to take him off the breathing machine. In a weird subconscious way I feel like my dad prepared me for his death by introducing me to SW and this scene. He was cremated and lives through me now. The Force is strong in my family.
Still after all these adventures and change of times , Darth Vader ' s story remains unique and emotional . . .
that last sound of darth vaders theme in 2:00 was the stopper and the most beatifull version of it
now that I think about it, Anakin was 9 in phantom menace, then 10 years passed in attack of the clones, 19. id round it to about 5 years later in revenge of the sith, 24. in new hope luke is 20, so 44. then about 10 years pass until return of the jedi. in this last moment where we see Anakin's face for the last time, he is only about 50 years old. that's sad. :(
It's three years between ep. Two and three and nineteen years between three and four, then three years after a new hope, empire strikes back, then one year then return of the Jedi. Therefore, he was actually 45 if I'm correct
thats even sadder
Ikr
Boba Fett yea, three years can be long
Gavin Hughes well, being burnt to a crisp in his youth might have something to do with it.
The fact that it was Vader whom immidiately suggested to the emperor of "turning" Luke instead of killing him did not escape my notice. :)
I think Vader/Anakin deep down wanted for Luke to simply survive, he knew that if he were to die... Luke could live by the emperors side. Honorable though he chose to save Luke when his hand was forced EVEN againts the emperor.
Knowing he’s only 45-46 here is sad
Going dark side and being burnt really aged him
I'm not crying I'm not crying..... Ok maybe a little.....
