Wow this blew up! Thanks everyone for your kind words, I never expected anyone other than me and my band mates to actually watch this video :P
I took a break pretty soon after making this video to focus on touring with my Band, Catfish but I think this is just the kick I need to get back to creating again
Stay tuned for dumb memes and music theory!
I was really enjoying the video as I decided to go down to read the comments. Everyone complementing you and I was about to do the same when I saw the subscriber count and WHAT?! You deserve WAAAYY more followers, your content is so excellent. Anyway keep your unique style, I'll be aware if you post anything new. Thank you!
I just wanna say wow man, this looks like it took some real hard work to make and it doesn't seem like you're a big content creator group ( yet ;) ) and still this video is very well crafted so mad props. When I noticed the amount of views and then subs count I realized you must have appeared in many more home pages on YT, and you deserve it.
That said, I think you can do some really minor changes to improve this video's (and perhaps future content?) quality: I would've liked a longer edit of the riff on the start just to know what we're talking about, I haven't listened to tool in a few years so I'm rusty and didn't get the riff till the end really... also, the whispering part was fine if it was a bit slower I guess or just a bit more volume to it, I'm listening through speakers and didn't get a word of it. Lastly, well, I get that it's a family-friends kind of video so the edits with the ghost/demon/thing were supposed to be a comic relief from an otherwise hardcore music theory video but I just didn't get it and it was drawing attention from what is (I think) the main content of the video.
I tried to make it as polite as possible, I mean no disrespect and hope you have a great time both on the tour and/or making content :)
This is a great video and you’re funny. And you explain things well and clearly love tool. I’d watch a lot more of you breaking down tool songs. Also, songs from Discipline by King Crimson can really easily demonstrate polymeter and phasing. Also Music for 18 Musicians by Steve Reich. If you don’t know either of those albums, I think they’ll tickle your think-feels. Thanks for making something awesome. Good luck with catfish!
You really should keep going with this Channel, that was a great watch
I'm not a musician but really enjoyed the video, great energy. Explained it without being dry as fuck. Keep it up man. I'm subbed now.
Man, I miss small budget channels like this. I'm reminded of UA-cam's former glory. Thank you.
exactly!
Nice Job. As a drummer I can't listen to some Tool while driving....I will end in trance... around a oak tree.
I agree. Tool is the only band I have to be careful about when driving. I'm serious.
Russell Heldt same! I wonder how the hell I make it anywhere since my foot is thumping the pedal, my hands are air drumming, guitaring....and my lead vocals are off the chain! Oh and I’m not a musician....Music Gods send me driving angels
i discovered tool a couple months ago and around that time i was listening to the pot and got into a car accident.... next time im pulling over until the songs over
The struggle is real…
And I often fail. Haha
@@dominickdarpino5584 Glad you made it out alive, man.
As a prog and fusion drummer I can seriously give you my word that this is one of the most challenging song that I ever learned. Hell I can't even nail the final climatic part of this song. And trust me I have played some Dave Weckl, when he was in Chick Corea (some Gary Novak too), Vinnie Colaiuta, Gavin Harrison (both in King Crimson and Porcupine Tree), even some Carter Beauford. But this thing called *ROSETTA STONNED* is a monster on the drums.
Let me just skip the whole insane part of the first two act of the song (which does include some sick chops, a insane 9/8 patter on the snare, tom and hi hat and that weird offbeat hi hat sizzle while he is alsooooo playing in odd time of 11/8 broken in 5/8 and 6/8) and come in after the drummer solo in the middle around the part where the bass comes in :
Danny carey is playing a rudiment called Swiss Army Triplet in 6/4 time signature with his hands( F R L, but he actually starts with the R) and on the 3th quater note, he breaks the 16th note swiss pattern and put an accent on the 3rd quater note with his left hand, which is quite hard, mind you (and also don'tforget he breaks it agin every now and then to play some right hand accents on the bell of the ride).
Ohh but it doesn't end there, and after that Danny's bass drum feet is actually playing in 5/4 time in a crazy insane patter which changes three times throughout the song, like the 5/4 bass drum patter after the solo, during that bass roff and after the climax are wayyyyyyy different. And also don't forget the quater not hi hat stomps on his left foot which I actually count in 3/4 as it is easier for at the last quater of that bar, it coincides with the left hand accent on the open snare.
And funally at the climax, when Adam.is playing in that 11/4 guitar riff, Maynard and Danny comes in at 5/4 and then Danny does the same very hard and complex 6/4 Siss Triplet patters with his hands while the his right bass foot, though it is in 5/4, it is different pattern than bwfore (as I have earlier said) and this patter is more challenging as it is faster and complex. And then that bass patter changes into a 5/4 double bass which makes my brain blow to kingdom come as playing it above the 6/4 broken down, modified Swiss Army patter is more difficult than riding a Hooker on Steroids.
And there you have it, in a nutshell : Danny's hands are in a complex, broken down Swiss Army Triplet in 6/4 with left hand single accents on the snare, the bass drum right foot is in 5/4 which has three different patterns throughout the song and his left hi hat foot is in 3/4 (or 6/4) gluing everything together in Quater notes. All in all this is a bloody hard song on the drums, like realllyyyyyyy hard song
❤🤔🙌🙌🙌
U are completely right
Danny is insane drummer and is also the best in my opinion
Huh?i feel super dumb now.
@Blade of Despair, Thanks for posting; you made me $2 on a bet I had with my band's sitar player. I'm the bassist in a dixieland hip-hop bluegrass Mongolian Klesmer band here in Alaska, and I'd tried to make your very point.
Also, as part of the wager, she now has to learn the final guitar solo from Comfortably Numb from the "Pulse" album -- all 11 or 12 choruses.....
Kinda reminds me of Lars Ulrich on that Metallica song. He begins the sequence by playing the kick drum on 1 and 3, and while maintaining that pattern, he deftly lays down this intricate pattern on the snare, playing on 2 and 4. I've even known him to really push the boundaries by putting the snare on 1 and 3, with the kick on 2 and 4. He's been known to do this while also playing either quarter notes, or 8th notes on the hi hats. It boggles the mind! 🥁🤣
Danny Carey is a helluva drug!
Justin Chancellor is as well. Or, just make it a suicide and throw in Adam Jones.
I mean, Pigmy Love Circus are p standard, it's Carey being not absurd.
With a Pringles can size can penis as well.
This is exactly it. I've been dosing on Danny Carey and loving it!
everybody gangsta till Justin's bass kicks in
Lmao
Yup here comes the BOOM
With a bunch of hammer ons and pull offs yes
I laughed, I became in formed, I laughed again, and then my mind was blown... bravo sir
I loved this. great humor, delivery, and energy.
Rosetta stoned is one of my favorite tool songs for sure
Mine as well, although it wasn't so much at first. It took me actually watching them play it live a couple months after the album released to fully appreciate the musicianship put into it.
i have absolutely no idea what you are talking about... but enjoyed the video all the same 👍🏻
I was thinking the same thing. My music theory knowledge ends at tee tee ta, but this guy is very funny and entertaining 😁 Maybe I can pick something up.
Andrew Whale lol ikr! 🤷♂️I was lost on the 1st sentence and the video intro but was all pretty impressive I must say just wish I knew wtf everyone’s saying!!👍🤙
It's videos like this that make it obvious I'll never be a drummer
OMG. Best UA-cam video I've seen in a while. Perfect humor for me, and an excellent explanation of polyrhythms!
The humor made me learn better. Dark magic, magic cards and metal really make the world a better place.
Not to mention the reference to the Old Ones
This is one of the funniest, most entertaining, most interesting, and most informative things I have ever seen! Thank you so much for making such an amazing video!
Is it just me or does he look like Theon Greyjoy?
yes very much so
No Theon! I'm Reek!
trDewy where your balls at, man? Your name is Theon! Oh wait.
T F better than Arya.
Who's that?
THANK YOU for taking the time to give this immaculate bass riff (and entire song!) the credit it deserves!!
3:4 or 4:3 “pass the golden butter”. You’ll be emphasizing the dominant 3 in the beat. “Pass butter to the left” you’ll hear the dominant 4.
Apparently Danny Carey actually learned it as “pass the goddamn butter” so using the method seems pretty fitting
This is the best lesson on polyrhythms I’ve ever received it I’m gonna be honest
Thanks for explaining this in a way that makes sense! All the other people I saw before this teaching poly's had me lost.
Dude, your delivery and humor is spot on, mate! Instantly subscribed!
This is the first video of yours that I have seen. Absolutely loved it. Informative. Comedy. Satire. Great editing and dynamic camera work
This was both hilarious and very well explained. Very good job man!
Hi Adam. I am a huge Tool fan and am so intrigued by what I hear from them. You did an AWESOME job of breaking it down. Thank you!!!
This deserves more views, great job
Dude seriously more content like this I really enjoyed your video keep it going
LOL. As an American who lives in the mid-west... I cracked up when you showed "Pop rock" and referenced a can of soda (pop) at 5:42. For those of you who don't know... people in our region of America call soda "POP". Funny to see someone from the UK referencing this vernacular.
We call it pop in the uk
"I'm from Youtica and I've never heard them called steamed hams"
@@7catstied2gether oh no, it's more of an Albany expression.
Some of the wankers in the UK call it pop. Most of us call it fizzy drink.
@@seb5542 thanks God, very cool
Okay, you got a sub for "Maynard's over-priced wine." Rest of the content is decent too.
Same!
And...same here
same 😁 Only realized after, I want to learn about music.
At least its tasty wine
Really well put together ! Love your sense of humor 🤣 . This video explains Tool's music perfectly ! Way better then my "there's a beat to a different beat that's off beat from the rest off what's going on" explanation lol
I wish my brain could math like yours.
same here hahaha
You mean mathsssssssssssssssssssssah.
Or my hands on my lap? huh?
The 1.66k subscribers currently had me confused as to what the number was, because 1 million and 66k subs seemed about right for the quality of this video. Good shit, my man.
Solid info and fun as well! Good to see someone explaining it so others can grasp it easier. Killin' it!
Nice job man! You delivered some solid info AND managed to be genuinely (if not cheekily) entertaining! I actually laughed a few times
This was a great breakdown! I was watching Tool videos and came across this. I love the way you explain everything, and I like your face!
Thank you explaining polyrhythms so well! I have been searching on UA-cam for a good explanation for a while and I finally found one!
The Simon & Disturbed line genuinely made me laugh.. plus being a quality relevant example, this is great content mate keep it up
Adam, I've never seen any of your vids before. It was well-made, well-paced, had useful visual references, and was unexpectedly very funny. I legitimately laughed, out loud, not just exhaling slightly heavier than normal from my nostrils as is usually the case when people type "LMFAOQYIOEWYTRIUWPR" or whatever you kids are e-texting nowdays. What I'm saying is, I liked, I favorited, I put on my practice playlist, and I subscribed. Sorry I'm so late to the party! Great vid!
This is one of the best instructional videos out there, and you were also fucking around much of the time. Entertaining and educational. Much respect. Keep it up.
New to the channel and lovin' it. Clearest explanation of the concept I've seen and I'm a composer! Informative yet hilarious throughout. I'm an Adam Neely groupie so loved the inside reference! Rock on.
I would like to hear someone explain Pneuma. I found that the best way to listen is with headphones in a darkened room and keeping perfectly still without trying to move my head or tap my feet, and just let it wash over me. That way my brain stays intact.
Same here bro
And 100mg of dmt
@@reefslayer21 okay joe rogan
I instantly subbed to your channel as soon as this video hit the 27sec mark. I almost spit my soda out when you started making that face 😂😂😂 Omg, you’re hilarious!! I loved this, so much. It was a perfect mix of information, explanations, and humor. Please never stop making videos like these!! I’ve been playing bass for about 17 years now, and I never could’ve of explained it this well. this was such an awesome explanation. I love Justin! He’s definitely one of my top 3 favorite bassists, along with Ryan (mudvayne) and Les Claypool(primus).
Justin and Claypool are my favorites
You know when you are pretty good at making quality content when you are able to be equally entertaining as you are teaching music. New sub coming your way 😌
My type of corny. Subscribed. I hope your channel gets more attention.
As a metal head, this is actually my fav baseline of all time so to see it broken down like this is fucking rad! Kudos bro
That was brilliant! Super funny, super informative. I've banged my knees to pieces.
Dude, first of your videos that I've seen, really cool. And I like your humour, keep up the good work!
That was way more fun to watch than I expected. Subscribed!
First video I've ever seen from you..... and I'm glad I clicked. Fantastic information and insight with a sprinkle of sparse mustache. I'll subscribe!
What a great video!! Thank you for your time, passion, and hard work! Subscribed!
I very much enjoyed this. Had me crackin up. Thanks!
Dude, I have no idea what you said during any of this, but your humor, passion and knowledge are infectious and I enjoyed watching.
This was an extremely well-done video... and I'm not even a bass player or musician for that matter... just a Tool fan). I can't believe you don't have a shitload more subscribers. Please keep it up... your channel will blow up for sure!
Came here for Tool but your commentary and humor are great. Subscribed!
This is wonderful! Thank you!
I saw Tool at Staples two days ago. I was always intrigued by Justin's technique on bass.🎸 great video.
good stuff Adam...thanks for the info and the laughs!
nice breakdown, i love it!
The Virgil Donati nod was great. I am going to have to listen to your band as your sense of humor and appreciation of music is right up my alley!
Really enjoyed the humor. Awesome video.
Great video man. It was very informative and the octopus joke made me laugh out loud and I had to rewind to listen to it again.
Entertaining AND informative. And TOOL are......just beyond, of course. Great work, man!😉👍🥃
you are hillarious. I have tried to show your video to at least 5 different people. i do not play music and i have difficulty articulating what ii find appealling with certain music and you convey the skill level these musicians have in composing these songs. Thank you so very much. i also have watched drum covers of Danny Careys drumming. Lateralus just blew my mind in how you could even get your arms and hands and eyes to do so many things at once
F'n tripper, love it.... subscribed!
I don't have a deep interest in music but this is one gem of a channel.
I like you, man. Humor’s not exactly my style, but that’s more personal. I appreciate that you mentioned Adam’s video. This video did help round out that one for me. These concepts are a little tough for me, so well done.
Your a great teacher! Thanks for the breakdown 👍
Been wondering about poly rhythms lately.
Thanks for the break down.
Great job Adam! Thanks so much.
You’re great! Awesome video!
I learned SO MUCH from this video!!!
I finally understand this part, thanks to you. This was the piece of a puzzle I couldn't find in the Tool arsenal :)
Ur awesome man. Informative and entertaining!
Really good quality video making man. Suprised your channel is still so small.
Hope you'll grow!
The Uneducated Asian that’s what SHE said! But agreed, great educational video 🤟🏼
Excellent informative video man. Thank you!
This video is sooo good made me want to learn this riff! Hope you'll find the time to give us more content with that quality!
Extremely entertaining and I like the intellectual analysis
Just stumbled across the channel. Not often I give out an instant subscribe! 😅
Awesome work!
Thanks Mr Neely.
Excellent explanation. Thank you
You rock man, I love tool and thought this was cleverly done. They are sooooo gooood live omg!!!
Very well spoken and good content
great job dude! awesome video.
Great video, man.
bruh you are hilarious and the info is actually solid
I stayed for the whole thing....good job
Dude.....i loved your breakdown of that intense middle section. I remember the first time I heard it....Danny made me feel like I wasnt a drummer anymore, just a fan listening
I really enjoy your style man, great video! Keep up the good work \m/
Pretty good shit man! Take my sub. You deserve a lot more!!
great video, good editing.. great information, funny and you played the shit out of it at the end, you killed it man.
What a fucking cracking video this is. Thoroughly enjoyed it and was great to see this section of such a great song broken down. What a gem this is in tonight’s UA-cam rabbit-holing. Big props sir.
Lol! Subbed just because this made me laugh. Hope your touring went well
fkn loved it, great job bro!
This was so much FUN! AND YOU ARE REALLY FUNNY... you could teach!
I'm sure you already know this, but still like hearing it. You're awesome dude
245th Sub! When I saw you had only 244, I had to do a double take. What what WHAAAT!? How is it not 244,000!? Excellent vid, brotha! Keep rockin’ the bass. 🤘🏽😁
Hell yeah! My favorite drum/bass part Tool has ever conjured up out their ancient geometry asses
Dude this was hilarious. Instant sub
More of this!
I definitely thought this channel would have more than 300 subs, great job dude! Ignore the haters saying its too cringey, I enjoyed it all
Let me note that I subscribed at 482 , and this guy is gonna have a big youtube channel . You are great Dear sir .
agreed
Thank God we don't have to work these groves in reverse. It's simple to play a groove and then map it out especially with the software that will do it for you. If it had to be a product of theory first I wonder if it would ever turn out as awesome as it does. Not sure if I made sense but it sure did to me. And Adam, you are genuinely funny. I was laughing thru most of the video and had to rewind it several times as a result.
Wow. Great video!!!!
As this is one of my favorite bass lines of all time and I’m slightly obsessed with it thank for making an entire video about the dang thing.
