@Barnacle Boy For real Don Howarth Mr Shoulders. Was the man in the 60s. Never really cared for the politics of bodybuilding. Sergio stole his shine. But never saw a bodybuilder who could just stand there and impress as much.
I was fortunate to be causally acquainted with Serge around this same time. He trained at golds gym in cypress,ca in Orange County. He trained as shown in this video. He did like a timed protocol counting reps not sets in a certain time parameter. Say twenty minutes on bench press and got a certain number of reps then next BP session would try to increase on that number.
One of the all-time greats alongside others like Frank Zane, Francis Benfatto, Bob Paris, Shawn Ray,...., classical aesthetic physiques. Serge Nubret was 55 years young here, unbelievable!
It's not overtraining because the weights are lighter. Less taxing on central nervous system. He also incorporated 20 and 30 second rest periods. Longer rest periods on lower body. I also stopped lifting heavy weights often. No more aches and pains. With shorter rest periods, you have to decrease the weight. Feels awesome.
@Jason Bates if you mean "conditioning" yes. Adds a cardio type element if you take short rest periods on compound movements. Compound movements require longer rest period because more muscles involved, more oxygen supply needed. So typically at least 1 minute rest between sets, but if you shorten it to 30 seconds on squats or rows, adds cardio type feel.
I agree! I started moderate weigh, higher reps and very short rest periods between sets and my joints feel alot better. I also superset alot which is really good all by itself
@@nattybynature1262 less rest does not allow adequate clearance time for blood and metabolites from lactiacidosis. You muscle stays pumped, and creates occlusion. Allows you to get into the burn zone. The burn, lactiacidosis, creates the key thing needed, which is Metabolic Stress. Metabolic stress is one of the things that stimulates hypertrophy.
Quite possibly the most underrated bodybuilder of the golden era. Wish that Arnold would release the large amount of footage they have of him training from the cut pumping iron content
@@sethlamanna7996 this system works. You use lighter weight and focus of form, volume and minimum rest. It doesn't make you look tough, but once you see the results, you'll wonder why you didn't do this before.
He was a great bodybuilder. the sport took a step backwards when they opted for the mass monsters over Nubret, Makkawy, Labrada and Paris. Zane said that when everybody went to lunch, Nubret stayed in the gym and when they returned he was still working out.
Yes, I remeber him in a report about his career in a french magazine: he said that people asked to him when he was 52 years old: " how will you be when you're old??"...He replied:"I'm old!" :)
@Ana Schrödinger510 people didnt even count age back then. Its a new thing and they had different calenders. Humans brow ridge grow more the older they get. Look at all the "neanderthall skulls" and ancient human skulls almost all have big browridges. There are also numerous accounts of people living upto 150+ years search it up. Aging is a disease death is certain.
In my opinion the best golden era bodybuilder to exist, not only that I’ve done 8x12 that he uses on simple compound lifts even curls it kills muscles in a good way and works
@1:05 Wide grip chins with overhand grip. All you need for the lats according to Leroy Colbert. Also the avoidance of super heavy weights. Experience has taught me that is totally true.
True to a point. But Dorian and Ronnie coleman suffered greatly because of the heavy stuff. Ronnie more so. Serge trained and was in great shape at 70 plus years.
High volume - never to failure w/ short test breaks not only builds mass quickly, it also burns fat like a furnace. 1yr later & am now certain Serge was exactly right for muscle mass. Medium-sized weights done for many sets w/ little rest in between IS the way. I did HIT for over 40 (FORTY!) damn years thinking I wasn't training heavy or hard enough when I was actually training too hard & too heavy. Totally contradicts everything I thought I knew about muscle building.
Supposedly after Weider told he he couldn’t compete and he stopped training . Can’t imagine what he would’ve been like in pumping iron had he continued maybe would’ve smoked Arnold!!
One of my favorite bodybuilders of the golden age. I 100% percent agree with him about ego training with heavyweights. Not really for bodybuilding. Moderate weights to stimulate the muscle is the way to go for a bodybuilder.

In Pumping Iron I think that Serge Nubret should have won. His abs were better defined and his was waist smaller and his overall muscle definition was proportional. Lou Ferigno should have won 2nd place.
