As a Tamil who moved out of India many decades ago to the US, I have always admired the Malayalam language; I can understand 50-60% because of common words. NPNM is a pinnacle of performance art and one of the finest Indian movies ever made. It is a Tamil/Malayalam movie, but I see my mallu brethren admire the movie more than others; it says something about the maturity of the audience; you need a mature audience for creative folks to make movies like this, so first, I thank all my mallu bros from my bottom of the heart for appreciating movies like this, I personally watched this movie many times, and I always find something new to appreciate in this movie. Mammootty is phenomenal; he can switch between Tamil and Malayalam and between characters with such ease.. I can't think about anyone in Indian cinema, perhaps Kamala Hasan. Might i could be wrong.
Accurately said. But Kamal Hassan is bounded by box office numbers now and is only limited to commercial movies. But Malayalam actors don't have that kind of limitations. Hence they are able to explore different kind of scripts and characters throughout their career!!
MALAYALAM CINEMA is lucky to have a Director like him.
Agreed about the Trance part!! Apparently one of my buddy didn't get the movie and I was explaining to him over the phone what was what and it so happened he fell off to sleep n woke up the next morning n felt he slept for 5 mins after sleeping for 7-8 hour's!
I watched it twice...both the times I teared up in so many scenes. One of the finest films I have seen in recent times. How many layers this film has. Many reviewers missed the" shadow being left behind on the wall " scene. Kudos to you for catching it. Thank you for this review 🙏 💖
Hey bro watched it, but i can't understand the core, as person of shanmugan how he lives is such a best life, person who going for job outside same as like he is... That and all super but how James transferes into shanmugam
Thank you for this. I am a non-Indian and absolutely love this film. …and I KNOW that I am missing 80-90% of the references…but a great film transcends language. I have often wondered what it would be like to see a Luis Buñuel film when they were released…how both timeless and “of the time” they seem. NMP is a great work of surrealist cinema. The extraordinary coexists with the ordinary and forces us to question our current reality. Mammootty’s exceptional performance is world class and should be recognized for such. He plays the dual role with such finesse…again, I knew I was missing out on subtleties (the accent, the phrases, the gestures) endemic to both Malayalam and Tamil cultures but this is where both LJP and Mammootty excel. It doesn’t matter that I am not privy to these references. The comic absurdity and tragic loss of this predicament is communicated without the need for these references; those references are gifts to both the Malayalam and Tamil viewers patient enough to let this film unfold and present itself. And that is the thing that probably turns some off from this film. It does require patience. It’s pacing is intentionally slow, hypnotic but meant as a meditation. I found myself squirming a few times watching it but would then be re-captivated. After completion (with the wonderful coda of the faithful dog running after its master)…the movie stuck with me and grew and resonated. Again…thank you for this wonderful unpacking.

Loved & agree with your in-depth analysis bro! Thank you very much. 🙏🙏🙏💐💐💐 Sundaram realises that even his near & dear ones are refusing to accept him as Sundaram in the alien body of James. So, he has his last meal shedding tears just as his loved daughter serves him food. He is already out of James' body as the shadow in the wall. He feels disappointed & let down by his own people who don't support him. Hence, he decides to leave James' body & go away forever. The only person who accepts him as Sundaram is his loving mother who feels his loss when James goes away & sheds tears. His cow & dog too don't bother about Sundaram in James' body. The dog, in fact, follows James' minibus accepting James as Sundaram. However, it is highly impossible for the people to accept Sundaram in James' body. It is a tricky situation because James' wife & son have been waiting to take him home. Certainly a well-made, thought-provoking movie by LJP & Mammootty & one which will remain etched in the viewers' mind for a long time to come! 👏👏👏
One which will remain etched in the viewer's mind for a long time to come is an understatement. The film will be etched in my mind for the rest of my life.
7:40 May be that sound of the windows jerking in the wind and the same sound when he looks at the mirror point towards a time in his dream when he was awake (in the bus). Someone said his relative who went by a car to Kerala was there in the bus scene at the end which also points this whole movie towards a dream sequence. I haven’t verified this though.
My interpretation is that Sundaram's story is James dream during his sleep in the bus. That glass rattling sound and Tamil songs in the background throughout the movie denotes the same. That thirukkural ( death and rebirth) said to James by the receptionist triggers the dream and other incidents and characters before his sleep resembles one or another way in his dream.
Two more interpretations can be made 1. The entire movie we saw was just a Dream of James in Bus! (These sundaram character may met James at some point of life during the sale of his bike and told all his life story) 2. The movie plot can be a Drama shown as movie. Because all the shots are static and characters come and go like in stage drama (That’s why after playing the drama at a place the drama bus leaves the spot) Anyway brilliant movie from LJP ❤
Your analysis is clear and concise. Great job. It is interesting to see, just like James how the audience is in a state of doubt about what they just saw even after they come out of the movie. Was it real or was it a dream? I think that's what James is also thinking while looking out of the bus window in the last scenes. The movie will not let you settle on a conclusion. I too want to believe the strong hints about everything were real and Sundaram suddenly woke up one day in James' body and got to visit his mother and live his life one more day. But when I think about the movie from James' perspective, it feels like a lucid dream. I like to think that the scene of James passing the banyan tree has a dream-like effect. It may be marking the entry and exit of a dream world like the 'bridge in Churuli' Maybe James is having a lucid dream. As he is a Drama artist, he is changing his dress and transforming into another person. Every scene plays out in his mind just like a drama on a stage as the frames suggest. Then he realises something is wrong when looking into the mirror and hearing the bus window vibrating. He tries to think about what is wrong. Then he wakes up inside the bus and everyone is still sleeping and wonders if he really woke up or if he is in another dream. Who knows?
Appreciate the time you must have spent watching and rewatching the film and all the research you have done. Loved your editing, aesthetic choice and the production value. All the best, looking forward for more, Pwolikke !
Deep analysis bro. After watching this movie I just felt it was a normal movie where the protagonist behaves himself before and after a nap. But this is something deeply interpreted with hidden detailing. As a movie lover, I like watching this kind of movie that makes us think over n over for a conclusion. ✌️✌️🤝
The wrindow shuddering sound indicates that the scene is happening at the same moment. There is no 'atmav' here bro. a dream or rather a collective dream ..that's the best explanation of the movie.
This is his masterpiece.m
Liked this movie so much. Scene where Sundaram pleads that he belongs to the village was touching. However as the director himself declares, inspiration was from an earlier ad. Dual personality was handled upteen times earlier for example, Shbobhana's double personality in award winning Manichitrathazhu later remade in pretty much all languages several times .
I need an explanation on why Mammootty 's seat changed in bus from side seat to window seat in the last??? So it says that last part was not continuation of the first scene where bus stopped in the village. I have a weird thought process, without proper explanation though. Everyone in bus died once driver fell asleep. There was a stressed line about who will take you till graveyard.. no idea how it is linked with the movie.. that was sung when Mammootty finally leaves the village. Saying person is dead now. (Might be of Sundaram) The role of Mammootty for the village was over once he wakes up from sleep. Is this Churuli movie type?? A loop?? He goes to different village and he will repeat something similar? Like a rebirth
I will tell what i thought of the minute i finished the movie Like they are a drama group which visit places where people who are mourning their beloved one's absence and they will bring back back some good memories of them for a short while with their acting(cause they are drama artists)and leave them like something coincidentally happened, thats why there drama was named as "ഒരിടത്ത്"🙌
This is so beautifully explained. NPNM is one of my most exciting theatre experience of all time. This is by a person who conaiders Avengers Endgame was a superb theatre experience.
I'm a Malaysian Malayalee. I watched this movie yesterday. Such a beautiful movie, the director shot are perfect and finest at peak. I love Lijo Jose works! All his movies has deep meaning and slow but if you are into cinematography then you will enjoy. Especially the frames! Thank you for your explanation although the last part about the LJP & politics I don't quite get it. Good works!
Hey man u nailed it 🔥🔥🔥🔥 even though this movie I watched in tamil i cant understand the context... But u clearly explained... But political u told something that one I can't understand 😁😁😁other than that such a finest explanation man hats off to you
This is a cinematic masterpiece. With a simple concept and story how the creator mad a feature film out of it using visuals and interesting dialogue. My fav thing abt this is showing a typical south tamil village. I felt like watching a 80’s village based movie from dir bharatiraja. And ofcourse mamuka acting is top notch
I interpret it as james’ imagination. He wakes up from the sleep and gets out of the bus and imagines everything and gets back and sits on the window seat this time. None of the family members were awake that entire time. That dog that runs behind may happen to be a dog that befriended him while he was standing there daydreaming and imagining his story for his next drama classic. This thought/story must have been evoked inside him after his convo with the cashier. Sundaram and the village was purely James’ story writing brain at work. If you also notice, there is actually no way through that field that leads to village. When james and family returns to bus as well, it doesn’t show them walking through the field to the bus.
When I saw this film, I thought something else. What if someone very close to us disappears for some years and another person comes with all the mannerisms and character of the missing person except his physical appearance. What will we do ? Reject him or accept him. Such a brilliant story and brilliant film making. Mammooka is very lucky to be the hero of this film. Hats off to Mammooka for experimenting such unusual themes.

If you're a fanboy or fangirl of some director who uses too much detailing and interpretations in their films, instead of going along with everyone who hypes them, learn to understand and explain it to the ones who dont understand. Be like this guy 🙌🏽❤️
A beautiful analysis of the movie. I have had the similar experience and thoughts while watching the movie with my peers. Kudos for your effort in making such good quality content.

Thank you for your explanation although the last part about the LJP & politics I don't quite get it. Good works!
Hey man u nailed it 🔥🔥🔥🔥 even though this movie I watched in tamil i cant understand the context... But u clearly explained... But political u told something that one I can't understand 😁😁😁other than that such a finest explanation man hats off to you
You are genius. You went into very deep. Love you for this work.
Thanks brother ❤️
Beautifully explained !. Hoping for more video essays 🖤
Definitely, What kind of videos would you like to see other than explanations? Because there are not many films which need an explanation 😁
Wow. What a breakdown. Laid bare the greatness of this movie and LJP. Thanks
Excellent thought process and well explained bro. 👍
Thanks.
Ninglda detailed review nannayitund 😊😊😊
THE FACE OF INDIAN CINEMA 💎💖 MAMMOOKKA 👑💖🔥💥💫 GREATEST OF ALL TIME 🤍💖💞
absolutely brilliant film. A pride of Indian Cinema.
When james and family returns to bus as well, it doesn’t show them walking through the field to the bus.
great explainer .. Loved every frame of the movie
Nanpagal nerathu mayakkam pride of indian cinema pa...vera level working.... Just using old movies dialogues that match entire movie scenes....
So grateful for your subtitles…thank you!
You're welcome 😊
Food for thought! thank you😊
Enikk ee padam ishtapetilla because its not everyones cup of tea, as you have said in the ending of this video. Pkshe ningade explanations bhyngara simple and understanding ayirunnu. Thanks for making me understand. Njan eppozho redditil oru LJP fanboi'de aduth ithinte oru cheriya gist enthannen onn explain cheyan paranjapo avide kedannond paraspara bhendham illatha karyangal paranj ozhivakuvayirunnu. If you're a fanboy or fangirl of some director who uses too much detailing and interpretations in their films, instead of going along with everyone who hypes them, learn to understand and explain it to the ones who dont understand. Be like this guy 🙌🏽❤️
Machane kollamm... Nice work.

I think you interpretations seem excellent.
Ohh great explanation never noticed certain stuff u told poli broo👌👌
What a Decoding.. Excellent

Why did the dog ran behind the bus at the end if it’s not Sundaram? And how did the seat got changed?
I believe the dog accepted James as Sundaram, and the seat got changed bcz they came back from the village and changed seats.
Well explained 👏👏
Thank you 🙂
