I feel so fulfilled seeing Baddy's perspective and thoughts on this film. In my view, it's one of the best Indian movies I've ever seen. It deserves wide discussion and appreciation. I hope it lives on as a classic.
He has nothing to prove to anyone...he is just now in a phase where he only cares about his deep innate unquenchable thirst to act. He has always been a risk taker constantly reinventing himself...but now he is carefree in his pursuit of great characters to potray...not weighed down by box office considerations. I bet he didnt charge a dime for his fees to act in this.
The movie has deeply moved me. There may be many interpretations for the movie, but I like to believe movie is showing Sundaram coming back to family inside James to interact with them one last time. In a limited environment it shows world is one and people are related to one another irrespective of minor differences.
One of the best reviews by Rangan ever . The movie startles you and lands you in a mirage which slowly fades away to the current reality. One of the best movies I’ve ever witnessed, with tremendous acting by Mammooty .
My take is sundaram is dead, he possesses James, Wants to live his life for a day, the moment his wife and daughter feeds him, he has attained salvation. Leaves James... Unique experience 👍🏼
Another Important detail... that when mammootty leaves the inside of the house to sleep outside when he stands up a shadow is seen on the wall and when he starts going outside the shadow stays inside the house which indicates james wants to go back but sundaram wants to stay.
Its not Sundarams shadow. Its someone watching from inside... Probably Sundarams wife... If you watch closely you can see Mammootys shadow behind his back on the floor when he stands up and when he is sitting...
Here's my take - another fan theory.. This seems to be a dream, from the last bus shot (all the chars are already sleeping, and their positions are the same as when James got down from the bus. We see James staring at the village from his seat, but its not certain that it was a window seat, it could have been the aisle seat as well). I think, James was well versed with Tamil movies/plays/stories and food, since his growing up years. Overtime, probably he started disliking the food and songs, due to some particular reason, which we are not aware of... 'Sundaram' must have been a fictional character and the village a fictional village, in one of the stories he read, or plays he did or watched. In the moving bus, he notices the lush green fields, and then when the Tamil songs start playing, he falls asleep. We notice that the driver also almost dozes off. So, I think, it was the driver himself who wanted to stop the vehicle, and we see him rinsing his face to stay awake. It was NOT Mammooty who asked the driver to stop. (Because when he is seen asking the driver to stop the bus, the sound indicates its not real, and its a parallel world). It was at this juncture, when the driver stops for a minute or two, that the whole dream occurred. At the end of the film, we just see the driver starting the bus and driving off. There is a reason I say that he might have had good knowledge about the Tamil culture. Like how Leo says in Inception movie - Dreams are mostly constructed on experiences and things that we see/hear in real life. If real lines/scenes/songs from old Tamil movies appear in his dream, then he was well aware of it, how to speak in Tamil, how people behave in a Tamil village, how Temples are designed, the milkman, the old blind lady listening to TV, the lady making cow dung patties, a typical bar in a village, and so on... Also, there is a reference to one of the characters (who left mid-way), other characters refer about something he did in "Payyannur camp" earlier, .. That incident is also in James' subconscious mind, it makes its way into his dream.
The name nanpagal nerathu mayakkam refers the nap as well... One more... The glass window vibrates when mammukka went to sleep and the same sound played in background when mammukka sleeping in sundaram's house...
One of the best reviews by baddy of late.a well informed review on the movie. The closing line by baddy truly captures the residual feeling after watching this work of art in theatre made by the three Ms -Maverick- LJP, Monk- Theni Easwar and of course the Maestro - Mammootty

Thank you for explaining the tamil movie references that plays out in the background. It is in deed a wonderful movie.. thank you for your ever wonderful review!
Before Nanpakal nerathu mayakkam, one other movie made me intrigued and search for the different perspectives about the particular movie is Memento, that movie made me sleepless and was wondering whether the protagonist was really married or avenging for the death of his wife, or simply he imagined his whole life and killed an innocent man. Likewise this movie made me intrigued and perplexed about the possibilities of James transition to Sundaram was just a dream or was he possessed by Sundaram’s spirit or what else. Brilliant movie, Mamooka stole the show, no wonder he got those many national awards
enna ya ellarum ipdi hype panringa..i loved the direction, acting and actors. brilliantly made. but it is such an empttttyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy movie. 15 minutes short film ah mudichuruka vendiya padam. I love the director's previous films like Angamaly Diaries, Jallikattu etc. but his films are getting less complex plot wise with every movie. to the point where it is diminishing into NOTHINGNESS. im absolutely baffled by how many people overhyped this movie. but i am blown by mammooty experimenting at this age. making such a small scale movie...malayalam creators not getting stuck inside hype and fame and not running behind the PAN INDIA / oscar hype...all this deserves huge appreciation. One thing I noticed that supports the theory that incidents in the movie never happened is that the couple who was sitting behind Mammootty and his wife, who they emphasize in some scenes then later left the group in another vehicle is still present at the last shot from the side of the van. And the dog thing should be to throw us off. Dogs always chase vehicles.
Exactly. It was indicated by the character that he wasn't able to sleep well. So i think all these incidents could have been a dream of the character of mammootty(as i decoded from the last line of your comment about the couple). The bus they are travelling is another hint that mammooty's character was an observant theatre actor/writer and he must have been in a dream where he formulated fragments from his observations to suit a story set in tamilnadu. 🤞🏽
@@roshmathew2243 he isn't in the window seat. But just looking out through the window from the aisle seat. You can see there is his wife in the window seat.
Everyone has thier own perspective... I feel like it's not a dream..intially there was a scene talking about a thirukural which says a good sleep is a start of birth and before sleep is u being dead..that scene was elaborated.. And when he gets down from the bus he goes for a nature call sits somewhere and gets possessed and contunues sundaram life ..he is being sundaram because he never realized that he is not..the moment he realises in the barber shop...his posses stuff stops and then cntinue as James.. If it was a dream he won't be sleeping again right?...since it's sundaram spirit the dog follows at the end :)
Nothing much to ponder. It was all Mammootty's dream. The director makes it clear in the last scene because the guy and the lady who return to Kerala the night before are seen sitting behind Mammootty in the last scene when he stares at the paddy field. And too everyone was sleeping just like when the movie began.
I am happy so many ppl still loves the real crafts and this kind of movie!! I know it's too late, but I am becoming a fan of mammotty! ❤ And I love the cinematography ❤
Masterpiece. I have 2 questions. Mammooty didn’t sleep properly on the day they started their return travel and he said usually he never has any sleeping problem and this was his first time. And also, towards the end of the film, he had one final look at sundaram’s family and also led them forward towards the bus as if he knew the route. That’s quite confusing. I really wish you ask this to the director if you interview him in the future…
Yes for me it was funny! Because after causing all troubles for everyone especially Ashokan who could not open his ration kada. And Mammooty led everyone back to the bus. That didnt make sense at all. Sundaram’s soul entered his body thats why last a song played behind. Thats how I see it.
It seemed like the whole thing is a dream and the final waking part or the present, is seen when he is already in the bus and looking out. Also observe that there is no shot of anyone getting into the bus back again. This more or less confirms that he was having a midday dream, and midday dreams are usually stark and vivid. The only point of a supernatural element is when the dog goes behind the bus, as it seemed to have sensed the character of Sundaram in the dream.
I choose to believe the ghost angle as it's really intriguing. Sundaram narrates an incident of some brawl with a malayalee and getting some deal for 8k instead of 10. That malayalee could be James himself and it's sundaram narrating through possessed James.
There is no physical similarities between james and sundaram. There is similarities with sundaram in the way james speaks and his bodylanguage only. That is clearly stated by a few characters in the movie. How could you miss such an blatantly obvious and important point? And you call yourself a movie critic...lol
Hi, I have a very different theory to what i have heard multiple people are saying i.e. dream, transfer of soul etc. However, my theory is Sci-fi. Early in the movie, when James is asked by the group people (00:16:10) why he readily agreed to come to Velankanni despite being a non-believer James says that i am not saying there isn't something but who are we to say. By this, after watching the entire movie, i interpret that James already knew what was about to happen. Later in the movie, when after his dinner, there are scenes of UFOs (01:09:11) on the TV and the TV is right in the middle of the static frame suggesting Sci fi angle to the whole theme. I cannot believe that this is just a passing scene. Later, after James's shadow stops on the wall and as James slips into his afternoon nap, some strange light appear on the side wall (01:38:20) and appear to move briefly. This suggests that earlier Sundaram was taken up by ET and for a brief moment, in some form, was infused into James consciousness and Sundaram was again taken back by the ET (the appearance of light suggests this). Thereafter, James during his nap slowly regains his original self. Even after waking up, James's reactions seems to suggests that he was somehow aware of what will happen to him and that purpose drove him to go into the sleepy town and after his purpose was over, he went back with his family.
If you meet Lijo, also ask him were there any connections with the Jack Nicholson's character from the passenger or Gerard Depardieu's character from the return of martin guerre as you mentioned. Really looking forward to that!
NPNK is a delightful movie, loved it. What if NKPK is made in Wes Anderson style. Blend of Malayalam & Tamil movie dialogues & songs are innovatively crafted and a research material.
Thank you for the apt and appropriate review. The essence of life oozes beautifully out of each scene and background score in the movie!! And as for LJP, here is someone who seems to have figured it "ALL" out!!
Wow i just searched for a youtube review and it surfed me here after watching the film got a little view but a better wow 😮😮😮.. just like the way i seen dukirk and then got amazed by some review in youtube nice explanation💙
yes may be sundram's ghost wants to meet his family one last time, the patti just accepts him and his dad also. Then during a snap he realizes he is not sundram, the film impressed me
Of course, the director had fun in coming up with references to confuse the audience on deciding if it was a dream or real. Many references on both sides. One such thing I see that nobody has talked about is this background dialogue, apparently by the little kamal hassan that says "..aaavi vandhu enga appa udambukkulle pugundhu...." That line really made me rethink about my assumptions until that point
Other interesting 'dualities'- 'sundaram' pouring the white milk into the black waters of the drain, the white clouds over black as sundaram wakes from his dream/slumber back as james. The last song and the shot of the dog running behind as the bus leaves was emotional, poignant.
This movie has so much potential. Intentionally he made it more real but man, one should have so much patience to watch this film. Too many lonnnnnnnnng shorts which conveys nothing. Hmmm, anyhow, different film.
Kept feeling bad when Baddy's review didn't come. Suspected some fallout between the actor and reviewer which we weren't aware of as was the case with DQ n BR. But the length of review and details and genuine pleasure of Baddy with the movie, now can get a good night rest. Thanks BR
During the same interview,DQ clarified that his misunderstanding with Baddy was resolvied. That's when we knew there was some history between them. ua-cam.com/video/gk71P2r3Zwc/v-deo.html Watch from 31.30 till 32.45
I have a fan theory about what this film means. James is part of a theater group. He has an eye for detail, which is why he notes the Kural text. My theory is that James once met Sundaram on a journey and knows a lot of things about him through observation. So, James acted like Sundaram for some reason, maybe to give some happiness to the latter's family. The atheist in me would like to believe that James is some sort of con artist 😂
Hi there! Yours is, indeed, a totally different perspective of the film which I never came across in the multiple reviews that I watched & read! The beauty of this film is that everyone's perspective looks plausible. I went by the PARAKAYA PRAVESHA theory which means a foreign body enters into another earthly physical body. In this case, this happens exactly when Mammootty wakes up & asks the minibus driver to stop the vehicle at the location of the foreign body's (hereafter Sundaram) village & walks into the village & his home. Then onwards, Sundaram the foreign body is in complete control over Mammootty's physical body. It is only when the villagers disown Mammootty, the foreign body/Sundaram realises that it cannot continue to live in a physical body that doesn't belong to it & get accepted by it's near & dear ones as well. So, it decides to leave Mammootty's physical body & set him free from it's clutches. (We are shown 5 apparitions of Sundaram at this stage for the 1st time in the film). So, once again, a sleeping Mammootty wakes up with a start when the foreign body/Sundaram leaves him & a liberated Mammootty naturally goes back with his wife & son. He still feels some bonding with the village so, he is shown as sitting near the window seat (throughout the journey, it was his wife who had occupied that seat) & looking in the direction of the village just as the bus leaves. A mother is always a mother & ironically, it is a blind mother who is the 1st one to accept Mammootty as her son, she even allows him to lie on her lap & feels the presence of her missing son in him. At the end, when Mammootty leaves, although she is blind, she senses that her son was leaving her forever, which until then was only a "missing" son, henceforth, it is a "dead" son, who will never return as far as the mother, wife & daughter are concerned, thus tears roll down her cheeks. The wife too feels some strange emotion when he enters the house for the 1st time & speaks in the same style as Sundaram, the daughter who rebels at the beginning accepts him & serves food to him. Above all, it is the animals, the cow & the dog, that accept Mammootty as Sundaram the master. The cow allows Mammootty to milk it which is possible only with people familiar to it. Likewise, the dog goes a step further & chases the minibus accepting Mammootty as it's master Sundaram. The different body & appearance doesn't matter to both the animals--the cow & the dog, while it only matters to the human beings! 😀😀😀
@@livercoolutd the movie is not only a masterpiece but also a literary piece. Any amount of discussion & debate or research papers can be prepared on this beautiful film. What an analysis....Great Baddy Sir..was waiting for your review.
Thank you for the apt and appropriate review. The essence of life oozes beautifully out of each scene and background score in the movie!!
And as for LJP, here is someone who seems to have figured it "ALL" out!!
please do interview wth LJP and discuss each scene
Mammootty is 💐❤️🙏
A nice decoding for me. I missed in the movie most of what BR mentions. The jigsaw is complete now. Maybe I must watch again.
what a brilliant film. what a brilliant acting.
Wow i just searched for a youtube review and it surfed me here after watching the film got a little view but a better wow 😮😮😮.. just like the way i seen dukirk and then got amazed by some review in youtube
nice explanation💙
yes may be sundram's ghost wants to meet his family one last time, the patti just accepts him and his dad also.
Such an in-depth review 💯
Thanks for sharing 🙏
Thalaivaaa.. Just do an interview with Lijo.. We are all waiting.
Such a good movie i've watched in recent times..
Other interesting 'dualities'- 'sundaram' pouring the white milk into the black waters of the drain, the white clouds over black as sundaram wakes from his dream/slumber back as james.
The last song and the shot of the dog running behind as the bus leaves was emotional, poignant.
Mamooty's afternoon Dream. ❤❤
Runtime speaks 9½ mins br review after ages.
Stunning movie 🫶🏻
Thiruvalluvar say uncertainty through that thirukural but the flim portrays the reincarnation... LJP fali to learn the kural.

Brilliantly done, Baddy. 👍🏻
The movie felt like a story, your patti Or ammumma would tell.
I was left confused but happy. 😊😊
A tamizhan will enjoy this film more than a malayali.
Brilliant review!
This movie will be relished by the people of Kanyakumari district with a deep understanding of both the cultures, language and context
Most of us have different perspectives .
That's just what LJP wanted.
Smart Bloke
Mammootty
This movie has so much potential. Intentionally he made it more real but man, one should have so much patience to watch this film. Too many lonnnnnnnnng shorts which conveys nothing. Hmmm, anyhow, different film.
Kept feeling bad when Baddy's review didn't come. Suspected some fallout between the actor and reviewer which we weren't aware of as was the case with DQ n BR. But the length of review and details and genuine pleasure of Baddy with the movie, now can get a good night rest. Thanks BR
Whats the issue between DQ and BR?
What fallout ?
During the same interview,DQ clarified that his misunderstanding with Baddy was resolvied. That's when we knew there was some history between them.

Magical movie tha ya ithu
Megastaar mammootty👍👌
The movie is something else man !!! 🫡
Came here after watching the movie.
@@jo-js2tc Fascinating indeed. Your version also seems very plausible. Thanks for sharing it!
@@livercoolutd the movie is not only a masterpiece but also a literary piece. Any amount of discussion & debate or research papers can be prepared on this beautiful film. All the characters, big or small, have given their best in the movie, including the dog till the last scene. Wish to hear Lijo jose & Mammootty's discussion on this film by some competent person who can bring out the essence of the story & throw more light on the blindspots in the film. Hats off to you also for putting forth your theory of the film. Hope to come across you once again in some other discussion. All the best bro! God bless! 🙏🙏🙏
@@livercoolutd hi, check the review of Entertainment Kizhi on NNM, it's different!
Fukin hell!!!seeing your view makes me think that multiple avenues are possible in this film and all paths have an inherent plausibility of bexoming real
