There's a reason 30 years later U2 plays in front of 50,000 people each show! They're fantastic live and sonically are one of the best live performers. U2 always said, their songs are meant for a live audience. Thanks for a great reaction!
As a little kid I would rifle through my Dad’s music collection while he was at work and found this album. It ended up being transcendent for me and I knew I had to play music. Listening to it took me to another place and it still does today. Thanks for the great reaction!
Ah man… you said they look so young there. Truth. I was 17 in 1987, the Joshua Tree album and tour were massive. U2 was in the stratosphere at the time, radio airplay was constant, CDs were newish technology and this was the first CD I ever bought. And yes, they played this in concert… the Joshua Tree tour was impossible to get tickets for. I remember Ticketmaster ticket lotteries, scalpers, etc. If you snagged tickets you bought as many as you could so you could bring friends. Saw U2 in Saint Paul, MN back then and would love to see them one more time before they hang things up for good. Yes they were young, so was I. Its good to see them still active all these years later.
Thanks for the shout out for The Edge, his playing is magnificent. Best word I can use to describe it. Love love love U2, they are such an important band.
And his backing vocals, which are so similar to Bono but usually a cleaner sound and higher pitch, are the real secret of the band's punch, especially live. Similar to Mike Mills of REM and Michael Anthony of Van Halen...those backing vocals provide so much of the sound
The band on the day actually did about a 40 minute set before it was shut down by the police, playing live and also miming along to the track along with a few other songs. This version of the video is actually a longer cut more like a making of the video than the actual video played on MTV in 1987.
Such a cool song and this video and its filming is indeed iconic. The Beatles' concert on the roof was a different (and more organized) happening and therefore, the raw factor of U2's take of filming their video this way is what made it so worth it.
The Beatles were also playing live, playing a concert. U2 was filming a mimed promo video. The film style is, indeed, guerilla, and everything about the video is true...except the band is not really playing. But that's true of 99% of music videos, even "live" ones. The Beatles were playing live and together for the first time in a few years, so that rooftop show was special in its own way but, yes, a planned concert.
This amazing song always takes me back to the 2007 Cannes Film Festival where they played this song live, for free, at midnight, on the steps of the Palais des Festivals (the building where the festival takes place.) It's a fantastic memory. ❤
Amazing 😁 I was so envious of those who saw this. 😊 I wonder how the police managed this little inpromptu concert? I understand the police’s crowd safety concerns though. Great video, great song U2 at their stratospheric famous best. 😊
The Pet Shop Boys cover of this song is also worth checking : it's campy as hell, since they mashed it up with "can't take my eyes off you" . And it's a real disco, hi-energy stormer !
It can't be good if it doesn't respect the style of the original song! It's not disco! A REAL GOOD cover is one that RESPECTS the style of the original song!
I've been lucky enough to have seen U2 twice in concert, and they DO NOT disappoint! I'm Irish and have seen them play Belfast and in their home town, Dublin☘both concerts were unbelievably amazing, but seeing them play to THEIR DUBLIN was something I will NEVER forget. Bono is so interactive with the crowd and the band just kept on playing for hours! #LEGENDS PS U2 are known for playing impromptu gigs, especially in America - PLEASE REACT TO - 'All Along the Watchtower', from Rattle & Rum - they brought a whole freeway to a standstill🔥 A couple of years ago, for NYE they performed on top of the BBC building in London.
Hello Dereck, that was great to hear the song again. The video also. The LP,or CD at this time was and always so great.Thank you Dereck for your reaction. You make you rare. But the💝💝🐬🐬 reason is you are busy.I understand.
Hello *Dereck,* It reminds me of myself in the cold winter of 1987; I was 20, headphones on my ears, listening to this song, sitting on the bus to get to my work's place, the side of my head glued to the window, contemplating the passers-by and the life that's just beginning to bustling about in the cold streets of the sleepy town, between night and daybreak which is beginning to dawn. It wasn't really *"where,"* but rather *"when"* the streets *no longer* have names. Peace, folks. ☮😏
One of THE best songs ever and THE best music videos ever shot. This moment is epic and grand and is Their moment. Makes you say to yourself for this moment in time ...The Beatles...who? 💎💎💎
It's just not the same. I am a huge U2 fan...and Beatles fan. The rooftop is the only similarity...U2 is miming a video shoot, and the Beatles were playing their first live concert in years. The only similarity is they occur on a roof
'Where the streets have no name" or... "In the Seventh With Maine"😅 One of my favorites bands👌 Try 'One' ... maybe the best track of U2. Hey... Derek!... Bono and The Edge recently covered 'S.O.S.' (ABBA): Niiiice👌 Greetings from Chile 🇨🇱❤👍
White anchor female diss's the area, white anchor male "woo hoo i'm on way way down there while waving backwards to the snob" treats it the way it should be taken
Where do I begin with my comment? I guess that the Joshua Tree album was the reason I became a U2 fan. That being said, they always interacted with their fans and this video is the best example. This place is in one of the worst neighborhoods in Los Angeles. There are lots of homeless, drug addicted, thief’s and some very strange people. I meet up usually ones a year with some of my U2-sisters and we like to explore some of those iconic places. Last year we went to this place, it’s right next to the unwanted famous, super scary Cecil Hotel(which is closed now). This song is definitely one of their amazing iconic masterpieces
I am in agreement that this is one of their best songs. The live performance of this song from Slane Castle in 2001 has to be one of the best. Do yourself a favor and check it out.
I had the opportunity to see them live during the Vertigo tour when they were in Philadelphia. If you see the concert from Chicago, it was just a few days later. They were great.
Not a set-up. I worked literally 2 blocks away int he Cal Mart Garment District - it was gritty but only really sketch at night back then. Now it's very gentrified though Skid Row is still just a few blocks away. I saw them later that week at the Colosseum. They were transcendant!
The irony of this video is that nobody had any idea that U2 were about to have success comparable to The Beatles. The radio voice overs of that time note that U2 were starting to sell out their concert tickets. This video was meant as a Beatles reference, but U2 got the ending that the Beatles wanted to their own rooftop performance with the cops stopping them for creating a disturbance. Instead, the cops helped the Beatles complete their performance because they were so popular at that time. The cops stopped U2, having no idea how popular U2 were about to become over the next year. This made the police look bad. Today, the cops offer U2 escorts and essentially give them the same treatment that The Beatles got at the height of their popularity.
All Streets have a name where U2 come from, I remember reading it's because of the 'block' infrastructure in the US. Is there another country who use numbers to name their streets?
Where the Streets Have No Name is about a metaphorical place where you couldn't tell the religion of people based on what street they lived on. In Dublin, if you said the name of a street, everyone knew only Catholics or only Protestents lived there. It was during the height of "The Troubles" in Ireland, when paramilitary groups from the IRA or UDA committed mass atrocities in the name of their version of Christianity. The northern Irelanders tended to be more loyal to the Church of England and remaining a part of the UK/England, and the others were Catholic and in favor of a separate Ireland. The Streets also generally indicated one's class/income, another dividing factor. So Bono wrote of a land where the streets had no name, so you couldn't make value judgments based on where someone was from.
The only time the whole world ever got together collectively as one for a single cause(Hunger/Famine) was because of music and Live Aid in 1985. If you were on the planet back then you most likely watched it. If not, your parents most certainly did.
Bye the way The Beatles have made a roof concert in January 1969. When i see them doing the same thing with a video playback...If that is not commercial...Definitively not for me :(
From U2 i like 2 albums : Boy and War. I can understand why The Joshua Tree was and still a bit hit but it sounds so commercial and untrue for me... Not intersersted.
There's a reason 30 years later U2 plays in front of 50,000 people each show! They're fantastic live and sonically are one of the best live performers. U2 always said, their songs are meant for a live audience. Thanks for a great reaction!
I love how the cop appears and says "everybody back from The Edge".
One of my favourite songs ever. The way the intro builds instrument by instrument, until Bono's vocals... perfection.
This is a LOUD must-play for me when heading out on a road trip on a warm summer day
Provavelmente uma das (ou a mais incrível ) abertura de uma canção da história da música! As versões ao vivo mostram isso !!
As a little kid I would rifle through my Dad’s music collection while he was at work and found this album. It ended up being transcendent for me and I knew I had to play music. Listening to it took me to another place and it still does today. Thanks for the great reaction!

Yes they were young, so was I. Its good to see them still active all these years later.
I happened to be in LA that afternoon delivering parts.. I headed that way… it was crazy.. not nearly 30,000 maybe 1500-2000 it was fantastic!!
I see the meaning being a literal Heaven, but also an ideal on earth. And of course, the literal place where they live. 3-fold meaning for me
Thanks for the shout out for The Edge, his playing is magnificent. Best word I can use to describe it. Love love love U2, they are such an important band.

@@dougman23 I agree. The Edge is incredible!

U2 the band of my life......i go there whit you.........forever
Great choice! Probably my favorite U2 song. Great song for a road trip through the desert... where some of the streets really do have no name.
Such a cool song and this video and its filming is indeed iconic. The Beatles' concert on the roof was a different (and more organized) happening and therefore, the raw factor of U2's take of filming their video this way is what made it so worth it.

I've seen them live at least a dozen times, and i get chills every time the first notes of this song play.
This amazing song always takes me back to the 2007 Cannes Film Festival where they played this song live, for free, at midnight, on the steps of the Palais des Festivals (the building where the festival takes place.) It's a fantastic memory. ❤
You'll really want to see the 2015 Paris version of *October/Bullet the Blue Sky.* Guaranteed to blow your mind.
What to say.... A masterpiece doesn't even come close...so 💖💖 Thx Dereck, take care.
Derek is the best expert far from others!.. and he is also very cool and positiv😊
FYI it did really happen and got shut down. They were attempting to do something the Beatles did in 1969 on a London rooftop.
This video was played on MTV very often for the next several years.
Amazing 😁 I was so envious of those who saw this. 😊 I wonder how the police managed this little inpromptu concert? I understand the police’s crowd safety concerns though. Great video, great song U2 at their stratospheric famous best. 😊
I love it when you react to my favourite band! =)
This song is timeless. But live versions were masterpiece. You should listen a versions from Sydney 1993 from official show. Absolutely phenomenall ❤
For me this song is synonymous with wild and eternal youth, a hymn to absolute freedom✨✨✨
The Pet Shop Boys cover of this song is also worth checking : it's campy as hell, since they mashed it up with "can't take my eyes off you" . And it's a real disco, hi-energy stormer !
A very goood one !
Is that not the one that Bono said "What have we done to deserve this?" about?
It can't be good if it doesn't respect the style of the original song! It's not disco! A REAL GOOD cover is one that RESPECTS the style of the original song!
Definitely really happened and it was awesome
פשוט מדהים❤מאוד אוהבת את השיר הזה❤אהבתי את התגובה שלך🤘🤘🤘🤘👍👍👍🫶🫶🫶🫶🫶
Sometimes the reasons why some group entered into the legend is moment like that. Thx for your reaction as always

You HAVE to return to this song - but a live version.
ANY live performance. It's EPIC!
A truly timeless song with a real millinarian quality.

I WAS THERE! Stuck on the 405 headed to Santa monica and back then NO ONE had cell-phones

Las imágenes son reales.se subieron a un edificio y montaron un espectáculo digno de ver.la policía, la gente, tráfico parado..una pasada!
Love U2.although I'm a baby boomer, and love this video, one of the best.
Loved U2 since I was born in 85
'Where the streets have no name" or...

U2 is one of the few bands ever whose live versions of songs are consistently better than the album versions
I had the opportunity to see them live during the Vertigo tour when they were in Philadelphia. If you see the concert from Chicago, it was just a few days later. They were great.
Back then with no internet if you play and you’re good they will come! I😎
U2...the only Band with orginal Band Members since 1976...
no smartphones to call friends to come lol
100% reality. This happened.
You really don't know this one before ? It seems incredible !
Not a set-up. I worked literally 2 blocks away int he Cal Mart Garment District - it was gritty but only really sketch at night back then. Now it's very gentrified though Skid Row is still just a few blocks away. I saw them later that week at the Colosseum. They were transcendant!
Awesome moment, i saw this video in 1988 i think. it was another top ten all time moment just like Bad.
The irony of this video is that nobody had any idea that U2 were about to have success comparable to The Beatles. it wasnt fake and it was soooooooo uplifting, AFTER you could escape the 710. 405, 101
😝🤘🤘
U2 every break Wave
Them guys probably couldn't afford they show so u2 brought they show to them 😊

What? There are more than 200 countries in the world and it's just barely possible that a couple may have numbered streets. Get real!
The Beatles staged a similar, not identical, but similar rooftop concert so you should check that out if you have not seen it before
The only time the whole world ever got together collectively as one for a single cause(Hunger/Famine) was because of music and Live Aid in 1985.
If you were on the planet back then you most likely watched it. If not, your parents most certainly did.
By the Hotel Cecil. Read up on it.
It was gangland back then, is it still now?
Please listen to Love Like Blood from Killing Joke 🙏
All the cops had to do was let them just play the song once!!
oh yeah, La not New York. It's been a while since i have seen it
this is amazing, absolutely epic. - but the idea, the innovation, came from the the Beatles. Everything came from The Beatles.

Dude, this is old news. Why are you commenting on this? Get a real job.
This is a snapshot of 80s history and I’m glad to see other generations experience and enjoy it.
