- When Turkish President Ataturk came to power in the 1920s, he saw the West as an example of what he wished his newly founded state of Turkey to be.
In a bid to achieve this, Turkish radio banned the broadcast of classic Ottoman music in favour of Western-style music.
But people resisted and instead tuned to Arabic music, and a new form of Turkish music emerged - Arabesque.
This film follows Martin Stokes, a professor of music at King’s College London, as he travels through Turkey, revealing how Arabesque achieved musical dominance, despite official attempts to stifle it.

I fell in love with 1930's Turkish music after discovering it on the Radiooooooo Musical Time Travel App. I started writing a Turkish Drum and Bass track inspired the little i had heard in my life through Loreena McKennit and the international culture channel on TV. I saught out a documentary to learn more about the culture. This was a perfect documentary to learn from and give greater context. My song is well on its way. I have a greater understanding now. Loved this documentary. Fun to learn from so many musicologists and historians. Thanks.

One night, at the Dolmabahçe Palace, while Turkish music was banned and removed from the radio, Yunus Nadi Bey made a request to ATATÜRK.
- My Pasha said, "Let them not deprive us of Turkish songs and folk songs, we are hurt because our taste and emotions are being interfered with."
ATATÜRK replied as follows:
- I like it too, but a revolutionary generation has to endure deprivation and sacrifice. However, our national culture should be valued.
This statement of ATATÜRK clearly shows that the total prohibition of Turkish music does not mean that it should be removed from the radio.
(I didn't know that Egypt's music and cinema industry was so developed in the 1930s.)

There are 2 great masters of arabesque in Turkey, one is Orhan gencebay and the other is Müslüm Gürses, others are just garnishes

Although they do not go deep into the issue, it is very important that they touched the taboos. Unfortunately, the murderer of Turkish music is Mustafa Kemal and his followers. They completely emptied the genuine Turkish culture and filled it with substitute values from the west. It's sad, but they even brought the music from there.
Well, weren't there efforts to westernize music in the Ottoman palace, too? Of course there was. But they NEVER BANNED Classical forms. Musicians continued to produce works of tradition, not only around the palace, but everywhere.
We have a very famous folk poet named Aşık Veysel. Kemalists beat him badly just because he plays baglama and produces "Yobaz" music. He narrates this story himself.
Thank you again. Turkish society still lives in a prison called Kemalism. This prison is more bigoted, more reactionary than the administration they call "political Islam", and it is a hate-filled prison that does not allow anyone but itself the right to live. Even culturally.

Muhammed Abdül Wahab’ın annesi Türk’tür mesela. Eserlerinde de Türk müziğinin tınılarını bulursunuz. Birbirlerine yabancı, alakasız kültürler değil bu iki kültür.
Bu kadarı için bile teşekkürler. “Türk” müziğinin niçin öldüğünü güzel ifade eden, anlatan bir belgesel. Bugün Türk müziği ölmüştür. Sebebi de mâlum.

You don't understand colonialsm at all colonialism was created by western nations in the 18th century and is not comparable to conquering and at the time Arabs conquered Algeria there was no Algeria it was a land conquered by the Romans. Colonialism is a political and economic ideology that strives to exploit and profit from it imperialism was created you simply lack knowledge of history and politics and are using blatant whatabousim that doesn't even make any sense Arabs weren't a nationality but an ethnicity and still are so and colonialism didn't exist at that time conquering foreign land was the normal but the people became part of the empire and weren't used as a mean to profit the conquerors land economically. And colonialism also uses European race theories to justify itself dehumanizing the conquered and glorifying any act done against them. No sane person would compare colonist France to Hellenist Greece or the British Empire to the Roman Empire .
