  • The only city to sit astride two continents, Istanbul once Byzantium once Constantinople is the economic and cultural capital of Turkey. Pierre Brouwers who made his first feature report in Istanbul in 1970 - has watched the city grow and modernize, at an impressive and quite fascinating rate. The director guides us through
all the city’s many districts, plunging us into everyday life while at the same time
visiting the most fabulous landmarks. Like with the other films in this collection,
several festivals and some sumptuous aerial photography give us a very privileged
deep look inside this city of 1,001 nights.
Districts: Ortaköy, Galata, Sirkeci, Eyüp, Pera, Beyazit, Kadikoÿ, Kumkapi, Levent... .
Taksim and Istiklal street. The Golden Horn. Spring Festival. Festival of Youth and
Sports. Janissary military band. Turkish baths. Architecture Saint
Sophie. The Blue Mosque. Topkapi Palace. The harem. Dolmabahce Palace. The
Tank Basilisk. Pigeon Market. Walls. Narghile. Carpets. Lokum confectionery.
The grand bazaar. Cabaret and Belly-Dancing. Swirling Dervishes. Illumination
workshop. Marbled paper. The Islands of Princes.

Gallipoli is now claimed as only a Turkish victory. It was there that Colonel Mustafa Kemal (the founder of modern Turkey) twice thwarted Allied attacks, saving an empire that he would then overthrow.
Yet, historians now point out it was with the help of Arab troops that his reputation was built. “Two thirds of the troops who made up his 19th Division that faced the first wave of the Allied invasion were Syrian Arabs,
comprising the 72nd and 77th regiments of the Ottoman army,” says Turkey-based Australian writer and historian Bill Sellars.
The battle was highly significant for Australians too, as they made up an important part of the British imperial forces at Gallipoli. Their experience during the campaign - alongside New Zealanders, who together became known as the ANZACs - helped forge Australia’s own national identity.

Then we got on a bus & it took us by ferry to Canakkale & all the way to Antalya, Pamukkale, Cappadocia, the Capital (sorry...this place was SO gorgeous, we had to come back 4 or 5 times!) Of course, when my wife's negative friends saw the incredible photos, they were green with envy! Istanbul simply derives from the Greek phrase "Eis Tin Poli" which means "In The City". Even the name Anatolia is Greek.
ANATOLI=East in Greek. ANATOLIA = Eastland
The Turkish flag is based on the ancient Greek banner of Constantinople. The Crescent was the symbol of the ancient Greek moon goddess Artemis.

Did the narrator say that Constantinople got its name in 7 BC? Or am I mishearing him? Constantinople Was named after the emperor Constantine of course on May 11th 330 AD. Where does this 7 BC date come from?

I'm Istanbulite and with those old taxis, with audi a4 b7(2004) on the road, seems like it's around 2005. I can't read the banner hanging there exactly at 6:15 but I googled it and figured out something...If the number is 3, it's 2005; if 5 then 2007 as you'd guess. Actually I found out that at 6:36 in the ad on the first vehicle from the left they celebrate 10th anniversary of the İşbank mobile services which points out it's 2007.

If this Pierre character has been paying attention to Turkey since his first report in 1970, I would expect that historical facts, census, culture, meanings and pronunciation would all be on point - particularly since those were his words emanating from his own lips.
