This family is the most lustrous treasure not only in India, but worldwide, and we owe a debt of deep regard and gratitude to them. I saw Ustad Ali Akbar Khan perform when I was 17 in the Bay area. Although I never saw Ravi Shankar perform, he and George Harrison became good friends and benefactors of Srīla A C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, whom I also saw in San Francisco. I am so grateful for these influencial personalities in my life . I was trained in Western classical music, but as soon as I graduated with a degree in music, I choose to be free of the constraints of a career in classical music. It was way too narrow a path for my heart, after I heard the sarod being played by Ali Akbar Khan, and heard the chanting of the Maha mantra, and jazz and pop of the day. I felt more devotion in that music. Had I gotten funding I would have liked to study at the Ali Akbar College of Music, but I was under age and my parents forbid it. It was also 1½ hours away from the only home I had, with my 2 sisters and parents.

Interesting when do Indian musicians hold the violin between chin and shoulder and when do they hold it against the floor...here the musicians are sitting holding the violin in the classical Western style and so is Baba Ustad Allaudin Khan whilst standing... so is the position in which the instrument is played determined more by school and/or style rather than bodily position i.e. sitting vs standing?
Baba used to be a hindu in early life and later converted to Islam, so a mixed culture is very much prevalent in his life. He used to stay in Swami Vivekananda's house and took initial talims from Swamiji's uncle when he was a kid. Nevertheless, a great talent indeed.

His father was Sadananda Debsharma, a hindu brahmin from Comilla, Bangladesh. Recently Ashish Khan, a descendant of Baba Alauddin Khan has decided to go back to his roots and now using Debsharma surname, Ashish Khan Debsharma.
Posthumously "Bharat Ratna" should be crowned. He is truely a rare of the rarest jems. A complete institution himself ❤🙏🙏🙏🇮🇳
